Review: West Coast Classics brings the heat on this latest super 7" with one fo the biggest name sin the game taking care of the a-side. 2 Pac's 1993 gem 'Keep Ya Head Up' features R&B singer Dave Hollister. The tune was dedicated to his godson Elijah and Latasha Harlins and also points out the abuse black women face in society. It's a cut that brims with warmth and a beat sampled from Zapp's 'Be Alright.' Flip it over for King Tee's slow motion, deep cut funk jewel 'Played Like A Piano' which is another vital tune.

Review: Japanese producers Aru-2 and Kzyboost are mainstays of the beak making scene. The Tokyo pair have a full length album coming up in August but now offer up a first taster of what to expect from it. This special 45rpm features two of the tunes that will be on the album ad a-side jam 'Shooby Dooby' is a futuristic wedge of bubbling analogue funk, Synth bass powers it along and then some textbook Aru-2 talk box vocals add extra spice. On the flip is B-side 'Boost Step,' which heads down a more laidback and downtempo vibe with funk vibes and synth solos leading the way.

Review: This seven from the Originals label perfectly encapsulates what the series is all about, pairing a track whose elements have been sampled numerous times over with perhaps the best example of how it was musically reinterpreted. Even if you don't know "Up Above The Rock", the title track from the 1968 LP by Philadelphia based jazz pianist and composer Ray Bryant, by name you'll immediately recognise it's distinctive break and piano riff. This latter element was incorporated superbly on the early 90s hip hop cut "On The Run" from Kool G Rap and DJ Polo which lines the B Side, slowed down somewhat but still distinctively the work of Bryant.

Review: Bouncing his time between Antibalas and his Marcos Garcia and Chico Mann projects, Chico returns after several years of silence with a sweet slice of lolloping broken soul. With its soft padded synths and cotton wool hug of Kendra Morris's vocals, there's a delicate tumble to proceedings as we nod and slide into a sound that's remained in its own soul universe since emerging almost 20 years ago. When done as well and with as much authenticity as this, it's timeless.

Review: A limited collection of vocal mixes, instrumentals and edits of an eclectic mix of gangster rap, hip-hop-funk and old skool from the '70s and '80s golden era of hip-hop. Featuring a vocal feature from a fresh faced Snoop Dogg on Dr Dre's 'Nuthin' But A G Thang', and Kool Moe Dee's underappreciated tongue-in-cheek 'Go See The Doctor' - both with accompanying instrumentals on Side B. Accessories to these two hits are the instrumental to 2005 R&B banger 'Just Dance' by Lenisha Nelson, who unfortunately never broke through to a mass audience, and the 1974 debut song 'Do It ('Till You're Satisfied)' from the New York funk group Brooklyn Transit Express (B. T. Express). A unique mix of throwbacks to American artists during the peak moments of their respective genres, and the highest quality instrumentals you might ever get from these songs.

This one consists of two tunes from the self-proclaimed god's backlog that we didn't think were very likely to be found together on a singular slice of wax. Estelle's 'American Boy' occupies the A side .Meanwhile, 'Stronger' backs up the B, reinforcing it with its instantly-recognizable Daft Punk sample and crude pop drum beats.

Review: The CQQL label has always come at house music from a different perspective than most, and that's certainly true once more on this latest drop, not least because it comes on 7", which is not so often associated with this genre. It is K Wash who steps up here with guest AMIRSAYSNOTHING for a low slung, swaggering cut with bold analogue drums and plenty of hip hop attitude. The mumble rap bars add another layer while snaking leads bring some West Coast cool. After that opener comes 'Protect My Neck' which ups the tempo but keeps the production raw, stripped back and suggestive, with more intimate vocals and ticking hi-hats keeping time.

Review: Son of Todd Osborn (Soundmurderer/Ghostly) Kaito Ian makes a hugely impressing first outing on the Galaxy Sound Co label with a series of lo-fi hip-hop beat-strumentals that cannot fail to get your head nodding. He is a dedicated music lover and skater with a deep knowledge of his craft and that shows here with some refined sounds starting with the soul drenched 'Revert', then on to the warped angelic vocal samples of 'Sequoia' and the percussive jumbled and scratching of 'Trek'. 'Wait Up' is another excellently blissed out joint and 'Sloan' is a sunny, laid back, lazy vibe to close down a superb EP.

Review: Fresh from his Encrypted excursion earlier this year, Karnage returns with two more powerful packages of pure future. "Realise" features the smoky, purring tones of Rider Shafique who calls for unity over paranoid dynamics and shattered rim shots. Most commonly spotted around the 160 mark with the likes of Sam Binga, Rider's control at 140 is just as strong, as anyone who's familiar with Ishan Sound will already know. "Bayside Shakedown" taps into Karnage's eastern roots with its processed rising percussion before dropping into organs straight out of a zombie b-movie. Incredible scenes.
