Aatropa & Tephillin - "Bells Jam"
Fabric - "Split Guest"
Herron - "33 Weeks"
Metropolis - "The Great Lake"
Review: After a successful first round that featured the likes of Kassem Mosse alongside Juniper and some lesser known friends of the label, Manchester promoters-turned-imprint Meandyou are back with another various artists release that plumbs further depths around the fringe pools of house and techno. Aatropa & Tephillin deliver the most upfront cut in "Bells Jam", which still lurks in oddball synth flourishes around a chunky thud of kick drum, before Fabric drifts out into ambient bliss. Herron meanwhile plies a long lead-in before blossoming into a dexterous and delicate broken techno formation of the highest order, and then Metropolis cools things back down with a winsome groan of a beatless excursion.

Facade - "Revelations"
Review: The newly established London Housing Trust label inaugurate proceedings with a various artists 12" featuring contributions from Cynic artist Jamie Blanco alongside the previously unheralded Alphonse, Fx Mchn and Facade. It's unclear who the latter are but inside info suggests it's three well known artists operating incognito, but don't let this wilful obscurism put you off as each track here is optimum analogue house at its finest. The Fx Mchn contribution "Jackie" is particularly beguiling, touching on jagged punk funk as much as late 80s house with echo laden vocals smudged deep beneath a delightfully rubbery bass line and buccaneering, malfunctioning drums for six minutes. A promising debut from the label!

Heedron (Dave Robertson remix)
Review: Following up his Zabiela & Jeff Bennett collaboration, Kriece's imprint is back with another all star cast for the third installment. This slice of tech fused house comes compliments of Australia's Dave Basek and Ed Function (Together to be known as Fo-Sek). The original mix shapes up in a neat fashion with tech-house style percussion along with glitching sounds underneath, creeping out from behind an effected vocal. Bassline is added, picking up the pace as warbling, organic synths begin to work off each other and creating an upbeat groove, tweaked in places while reversed sounds lead the way throughout the laid back flow. The first of two retakes is a Kriece remix, reshaping things into a rolling mix of clackety rhythms and deep, acidic sub sounds gradually resonating along with scary vocal cuts to get inside our heads. The production is tight and to the point in its delivery of a moodier interpretation. Finishing things up is superb Dave Robertson remix, twisting the original's elements into a murmuring, spluttery tech house edit, and adding some enticing chord stabs into the dark, skippy vibe. Sweet!

Tom Collins - "The Chaser" (Spettro's Really Green mix)
Review: A well balanced mix of newcomers and established artists getting together to throw down some funk. Blacksoul teams up with newcomer, Musical Globe, for a slice of disco heaven that is all about a wicked break. Sleazy McQueen drops a funk bomb on us, chopping up the samples just right and then killing it with that old school rap. Fabio Bacchini channels Chicago via Italy and works a classic sample, while Tom Collins is back and with a vengeance.

Jamie Blanco - "Unknown Reason" (6:16)
FX Mchn - "UFOD" (5:13)
Late Night Audio - "Live For The Music" (5:11)
Facade - "Transit" (9:26)
Review: London Housing Trust return with a nine installment of their no nonsense 12" series featuring cuts from Jamie Blanco, Fx Mchn, Facade and Late Night Audio. Calling shotgun in Jamie Blanco, whose productions have featured on the majority of LHT releases thus far and "Unknown Reason" is a fine lead track, all warm cascading basslines, bubbling synth touches (that occasionally sound like dolphins) and loose drums. Its classic house produced with modern clarity. Fx Mchn deviates into more abstract territory with the skittering, bass heavy beat down of "UFOD", whilst Late Night Audio opt for a more classicist vocal house bump with "Live For The Music". It's left to Facade to drop the tempo again with the wonderfully laid back "Transit". Another great 12" from the Trust!

BLM - "My Sound Tool"
Flori - "Red Rectangle"
James Johnston - "Lights Off"
Review: Since launching at the tail end of 2011, the Black Key label has proved itself to be a solid destination for those seeking high-grade deep house. Here, they showcase the work of a trio of 'friends of the family'. BLM opens proceedings with "My Sound Tool", a fluid chunk of eyes-wide-shut deepness containing just the right amount of bump. James Johnston's "Lights Off" is typical of his recent atmospheric outings, and matches the loose fluidity of BLM's opener. Best of all, though, is Flori's "Red Rectangle", a Larry Heard-ish chunk of classic Chicago deepness with just a hint of classic analogue shuffle.

Review: Blue Mondays are a Mantua based project of Alex Ferrazzi and Keemani with singer Francesco Sperotto aka Kaysand (who got his start with deep house band Grammophono), on another fine EP for their eponymous imprint. First up is the deep down and dirty electro house of "Stop" featuring gritty synth arpeggios, dusty drums and sleazy vocals. The legendary Robert Owens should need no introduction, as do legendary British duo Justin Harris & Luke Solomon aka Freaks; whose brilliant "Right Now" appears in the form of a "Blue Mondays Tfbm mix" while the legendary Swayzak's version of "Stop" is an epic hypnotic techno journey over its full 13 minutes duration.

Review: Michigan imprint Flapjack drops four tracks of crisp deepness from an international cast of production talent. Chicago resident Bryan Jones veers into fist pumping territory with the peak time jack of "Low Flow" which has a satisfying sub bass rumble. There's a sweet disco feel to "First Time" by Czech producer Arco typified by the low slung guitar and dubby bass line - some DJ Sneak vibes on this one. On the flip, "Give & Take" sees Australian D Tech get busy on the keys over a bumping house beat whilst Forrest Avery & Derty D plunder a hip-hop classic on "The Perfect Beat".

Review: The third Rush Hour Direct Current release sees previous incumbents Cosmin TRG and Falty DL engage in some mutual back scratching activities with each remixing a standout track from the others RHDC EP. Falty DL turns the Romanian's "See Other People" into a crazed futuristic techno R&B hybrid - probably what a Kyle Hall remix of Kingdom would sound like. On the flip "St Marks Place" gets a truly menacing techno funky rerub from the Cosmin. Top release all round.

Spank Spank - "Jam Session" (DJ Duke edit)
Felix Da Housecat - "Jupiter Song" (DJ Duke edit)
DJ Pierre & Maurice - "Let It Go" (DJ Duke edit)
Review: The idea behind this EP is deliciously simple: veteran New York producer DJ Duke re-edits a bunch of lesser-known Chicago house classics from the Wild Pitch era. Happily, the execution is just right, resulting in a particularly playable set of DJ tools. Felix Da Housecat's 1994 cut "Jupiter Song" is turned into a hypnotic chunk of intergalactic deep house, while DJ Pierre and Maurice's "Let It Go" - baggy and loose, with rolling chords and tasty vocal hits - is expertly extended to emphasise the groove. While Duke's edit of Spank Spank's vibraphone-laden "Jam Session" is enjoyable, the real killer is his version of Roy Davis Jnr's piano laden "I'm Hungry". It retains the positive spirit of the original while adding an element of tracky toughness.

Review: Spain's Luvdancin label is notorious for releasing new and exciting talent in the house game, and they've done it again with this latest collaborative effort from four rising producers. Deepah calls the shots on the A1 - the man is a young house maverick from France - and delivers a Detroit-flavoured house twister in the for of "Ahh, Come On"; the lesser known Folamour also indulges in some quality, laid-back deep house on "Brothers Since The First Day". For the B-side, newcomer Housecore goes for the rawer approach on "No More Doubts", and Paris' Rhythm&Soul aka Joaquin Diaz funks his way through a tight house groove on "New Dayz". Review: Not content with those pair of bubbling cuts produced with UK man Champion, Four Tet rolls out another must have Text 12" that features collaborations with the long dormant Designer alias of Melbourne-based Chicagoan Casey Rice. The pair's work together first surfaced in the shape of "Dark", an abstract, skeletal beat track Four Tet included on his Essential mix with Jimmy Jamie xx last year. It now features here on the B-side, preceded by the more life affirming bliss of "Mothers". Here Rice and Hebden craft a skittering rhythm track blessed with colour and some truly hypnotic manipulated and delay effects. Review: Local Talk's 1nce Again reissue sublabel returns with the focus this time on DJ Duke, and the track "Closer", originally released in 1994 on Duke's Power Music Records. A long-time favourite of Local Talk's Mad Mats, the original Klubb Kidz flavour dub finds itself on this 12", a still impressive slice of 90s house which shows the imitators how its done. More exciting still are the remixes from esteemed Stockholm DJ and Parkway Records boss Mark Seven; his "So Close" strips everything back but the deep organ tones and the bold vocal, while the masterful "Stalker Mix" succeeds in delivering a more after hours cut with a shimmering disco arp placed squarely in the foreground.

Domy - "Dance" (Sante remix)
Felipe Venegas - "Ozinaga" (Tribute to Walter Ozinaga)
Butch - "Now You Know"
Review: Amir and Butch’s Mainz based label, Bouq has built a reputation for delivering quality groove based house and techno since its formation in 2009. Fun is the staple ingredient in their releases and Bouq Family & Friends Part 2 is no different, arriving just in time to soundtrack endless summer parties out in the sunshine.

Bouq has been rather quiet of late, somewhat surprising considering the strength of their first year in business. They have been busy though, just it has been slightly more under the radar. In addition to gigs throughout Germany, label top dogs Amir, Butch and Sebastian Lutz have also released a number of solo efforts. But now, the label returns to follow up on Part 1 which dropped to much acclaim at the end of last summer.

Opening the release is Cadenza star, Felipe Venegas drops the warm and friendly sounding "Ozinaga." A simple beat is joined by a deep infectious groove and some warm synth stabs that create an altogether pleasant and easy vibe. The track is actually dedicated to Felipe’s friend Walter Ozinaga who passed away earlier this year. Domy is next up with his debut, "Dance." Again crafted with a warm and contented sentiment, this track is deliriously groovy, fusing a monster bass, driving highs and a soulful and emotive female vocal. It’s shuffling percussion gives it even more of a sun-tinted glow, perfect for outdoors. Berlin based Santé delivers a tech house remix to close proceedings. Having produced for Rekids and Souvenir already, Santé brings his accomplished sound to Bouq for this special remix. Stripping the original down, he turns "Dance" into a club orientated track whilst still keeping all the groove, and more importantly all the fun.

What has set Bouq apart from the rest so far has been its ability to bring quality and respected music combined with emotion, fun and feeling. Family & Friends Part 2 does exactly that, telling the next chapter of Bouq’s story in its own endearing style.

Downbeat - "Moskitos En Siberia"
F-on - "Smog"
Review: With our heads are still ringing from that superb Downbeat transmission from Marcellus Pittman earlier this year, the lesser spotted Downbeat Black Label return with a rare and equally bugged out drop. There's only been two Black Label releases before, the first had Juju & Jordash at the helm and the last saw Vakula behind the buttons, this time it's label founders Jose Rico, Urtzi and F-on taking care of business. Rico and Urtzi combine as Downbeat for "Moskitos En Siberia" a drawn out excursion into a barren soundscape of spectral vocals, slack jawed percussion and unnerving tones. "Smog" by F-on is no less eerie, bringing to mind some of the more ghostly ambient moments on Demdike Stare's Voices Of Dust.

Review: Berlin's Modus crew return with another widescreen session from affiliates, friends and comrades. The shadowy DXC duo let rip with another up-tempo ode to Detroit with a relentless slightly dubbed out riff. Long-standing German representer Mac-Kee gets a raw Chicago chunk on with "I've Been Tune" while equally enduring master-craftsman Franck Roger provides spiritual healing with his sultry, harmonic Iz & Diz-esque "Ever". Finally London's Maik Yells takes the last leg with the restrained and contemplative, garage-style strutter "Swap". As with the previous editions of the "Beste Freunde" series, it's premium ear candy across the board... And likely to fly just as quickly.

He opens up with 'Do You Wanna Dance' which has vocals pacing about the mix and old school acid bass twangs under raw house drums. Review: The Sofrito Super Singles series is on the cusp of double figures and this offering from collective main man Frankie Francis and the excellent Simbad might just be their best work so far. As ever with Sofrito, there's a sense of music education that comes with this record as the label shines the light on Gwo Ka - the folkloric rhythm of Guadeloupe - and one of its greatest voices in Esnard Boisdur. The focus here is Bosidur's 1991 track "Soufwans" (which translates as Sufferance for those not au fait with Guadeloupian) which in the hands of Francis and Simbad is flipped into a hypnotic house production replete with deep bassline and some killer synths. The accompanying dub mix will probably appeal to the deeper house selectors too as there's some killer drum programming on that one.

Review: Established back in 2010, the Sudden Drop sub label from Fear Of Flying tends to choose it's output wisely with just over ten releases in this period coming from a respected cast of producers like Iron Curtis, Bleak, Roger Gerressen, and Leif. We can add to this list Ethyl & Flori, a long standing production partnership that has always stood for quality, whose 3 track Transcripts 12" shows the pair at their most diverse. "White Lotus Rebellion" is characterised by playful drums and fluttering, bird like sonics atop a Chicago indebted groove whilst "Sidestep" lives up to it's name as the pair veer off into abstract broken UK house territory. B side hogger "Shorthand" is heads down techno at it's finest.

The story from DFA goes that Nik Dawson submitted two remixes after being commissioned along with Helena Hauff, Dan Avery, Gunnar Haslam and Invisible Conga People and the label were so impressed with both they decided to grant Bookworms his own 12" release. The first remix pulsates and throbs in a wholly satisfying manner whilst the piston style drums lend the production a real actual industrial edge, whilst the second more relentless remix places more emphasis on creating a thick analogue groove that binds everything together.

You should of course be familiar with the former, most recently seen impressing alongside Mr Weatherall as The Asphodells, and steadily stockpiling an array of equally refined solo material on all manner of labels and "In Collusion" continues Fairplay's dalliances with an approach that blends cosmiche, soundtrack and minimal synth with his own distinct touch. His B Side companion Forever Sound might be less familiar, but "Glow Worm" finds the Berlin based artist contributing an equally worthy track, calmly traversing the kind of supple, hypnotic organic techno one might hear on a Border Community B Side.

Independance Ave Orchestra - "Welfare"
Review: ** REPRESS ** A seventh release on Proibito arrives and it finds label boss Anthony Naples switching things up as the full artist approach is cast aside in favour of some posse gathering tactics. Label regulars Hank Jackson and Huerco S both feature (the latter under his newly helmed Independence Ave. Orchestra pseudonym) and they are joined by Proibito debutants Alex Falk and Jackson Lee - both of whom have priors for Proper Trax and Mystical Disco respectively. "Mitsuda" by Falk is a strange, ghostly slab of techno characterised by odd phasing and the occasional gurgle of stretched tape, whilst "Mongoos" from Hank Jackson keeps it weird but turns the mood towards something a lot frostier. On the B Side "Sumba Togola" from Jackson Lee mangles up all manner of vocal samples amidst a twisting groove of manipulated bass lines and unpredictable drum programming whilst the glistening "Welfare" suggests Huerco S is using the Independence Ave. Orchestra name to show a different aspect of his productions skills.

Review: New York's FaltyDL has remained busy throughout the year, issuing a LP filled with bruk jungle on Planet Mu, collaborating with Fotomachine, dropping the odd Ninja Tune 12" and facilitating a most interesting album from Elysia Crampton through his Blueberry label. Speaking of which, the man himself lines this latest Blueberry 12" with a pair of signature heavy licks. The A side, "River Girl", is simply a great piece of house music with subtle tribal influences and sultry vocal samples, all wrapped up in a hybrid coating consisting of hip-hop, juke and even a little synth-pop, perhaps. On the flip, "Do You Box?" goes much deeper down the rabbit hole, offering an odd, broken beat that is just slightly too fast for hip-hop, and a tad slow for house. Whatever you would want to call it, it's clear that FaltyDL has the ability to marry just about any genre together.

Much like his own tunes, The Cyclist and O'Flynn turn in two dusty, percussion-heavy dance experiments that blur the lines between bass and house, coming through with some lovely, late summer rays of warmth. With previous outings on Wolf Music and Let's Play House, among others, Fantastic Man has now weaved his way into dance music's epicentre and his tunes have been coveted by the likes of London's Tief and Feel My Bicep crews. "Snake Charmer" is a tropical house lick complete with monkey sounds and all, whereas "Donkey Punch" is somewhat of a hybrid thanks to its broken beat pattern and oddball bassline - what a peach! Over on the B-side, "El Tropo" is an uber deep cut with a rather lovely set of Balearic melodies, but the real treat is "Birds Of Paradise" thanks to its utter neglect of a 4/4 beat pattern. Instead, Newman creates a tight, functional groove out of sparse and airy flurries of sound. Recommended.

How Bout It?
Review: Fantastic Man, otherwise known as Mic Newman, helms the debut release on his own Fine Choice imprint, a vinyl only endeavour primed to fill the needs of the more discerning deep house aficionados out there. A fixture on the effervescent deep house scene in Melbourne (he's part of the tongue in cheek Melbourne Deep House Mafia) Newman has been expanding his discography in recent years with appearances on Tsuba and Murmur complemented by the rise of his Fantastic Man alias with key drops for Let's Play House and Wolf Music. Founding Fine Choice seems like an appropriate step right now, and the two tracks on this Late At Night 10" are true examples of sample laden, beat down house at its finest, both demonstrating his deft editing skills and talent for subaqueous grooves. Recommended.

Margine Call
Review: Mic Newman's Fine Choice label was established earlier this year as a vinyl only outlet for the Melbournite to release music under his immediately recognisable Fantastic Man pseudonym. The sample laden, beat down house and sun blemished disco of his debut Fine Choice missive is continued here (as is the chosen 10" format) with lead track "Tension" a wonderfully uplifting blend of smudged melodic keys, chugging techy drums and fizzing underbelly. It's the kind of sassy production you could drop on a sun laden Croatian beach and immediately gain a dancefloor's ears. Complementing this is "Margine Call" which sees Newman pair some samples from a test signal record with off kilter disco funk.

Review: While Fantastic Man's material has been in and out of our shelves since 2011, it was this year's LP for Paris' Antinote that really grabbed our attention. "Rhythm Algorithm" for Superconscious follows a similarly wacked-out vision of house, and the title track itself is a stunning bullet made of ricocheting percussion and spectral melodies. "Trance Sexual" is a bumping, Chicago-leaning house banger that'll mix like perfection into just about anything, whereas "Fittin' & Turnin' (All Day)" is deconstructed by comparison, a hypnotic and highly frenetic sort of house jacker that rings and twists frantically from start to finish. Class.

Review: Australian producer in the German capital: Fantastic Man returns with a great of an EP for Igor Tipura's always interesting Kitjen, following up Suzanne Kraft's appearance for the Stuttgart founded (but now Berlin based) label. On the A side there's we have got a very '80's sounding, retrovert jam that is the title track, which also features some nice TB-303 acid for good measure. On the flip, we have the intergalactic, congo driven vibes of "Acid Martin" with its trippy drums that as the label itself says: you'll truly lose yourself in! Then finally the swirling deepness of "Legoman" appears, which features a nice breakbeat groove that comes into the fold halfway, accompanying those rusty vintage rhythms and emotive pads just nicely.

Sanctuary
Scenic Route
Review: Mic Newman's sample-heavy alias Fantastic Man is back, making his debut on New York's Let's Play House label. It's Jazz , rolling pianos and an interjecting trumpet that are sampled most, quite roughly, in the EP's title track, while 'how are you' or "Wie Gehts", rather, sees Fantastic Man's DJ fader approach to production come back into play - best heard on his track "Look This Way" from 2010. The EP's highlight is the hi-energy skip and twinkling keys of "Sanctuary", while "Scenic Route", sampling some spoken word this time, combines Italo disco with touches of Krautrock and, of course, house music.

Fantastic man - "Paradise"
Andy Hart - "My Queen"
Max Graef - "Das Brett"
Review: Australian label Melbourne Deep Cast return! Originally released as part of this year's Record Store Day activities, this Snooze For Days 10" from Melbourne's finest deep house operators is now widely available and features cuts from the Man Fantastique, Andy Hart and Max Graef. Each has supplied some excellent beat down edits of material that some might recognize and others won't; Fantastic Man's slow burning "Paradise" for example is based around a devilishly pitched down vocal of a late 90s neo soul classic that only really comes apparent when the "yeah you might laugh" refrain comes looping into focus. Andy Hart is on straight up discofunk sleaze form with "My Queen" whilst Max Graef cranks up the dust on "Das Brett" which has the best double bass manipulation since Roni Size's "Brown Paper Bag".

Review: 'Love Can't Turn Around' is one of the most enduring and pioneering hits in house music. It's an unabashed anthem with impassioned lyrics that drip with covert sexuality thanks to the forceful delivery of Darryl Pandy. His passion is offset by the sweetness of the backing singers, while crashing hits, big stabs and horn leads all power it along and cannot fail to get you in a sweat. Here it comes in all its definitive forms allowing you to serve it up however you see fit. Whichever version you chose, damage will ensue when you drop this one.

Can We Try
Review: Given the runaway success of their 2013 anthem "It's You" (licensed by Defected after vinyl copies began changing hands for huge sums online), hopes are naturally high for this belated follow-up from Red D and San Soda's FCL project. "Can We Try" is nowhere near as potent as its predecessor, but is still a fine effort; certainly, plenty of house DJs will enjoy the bright-eyed combination of bleep-heavy electronics, surging analogue bass and Lady Linn's breathy vocal.

FCL - "Behold"

Review: Last month saw Red D and San Soda join the select cast of DJs to contribute to Defected's signature In The House mix series with a fine Double CD set that saw the FCL pair each turn in a mix of currents and classics. The mandatory 12" sampler now arrives as a vinyl accoutrement with FCL's own contribution "Behold" augmented by three highlights of the CD mixes. Rich with soulful touches and deep house classicism, "Behold" is FCL laying down a fine chord driven production that is the epitome of dreamy. A classic from the late '90s canon of Nick Holder follows with the forthright Track Addicts cut "A Place Not 2 Far" whilst the B side holds some real heat from Jump Chico Slamm and the always welcome sight of Peven Everett's vocals lacing a house groove, in this case Stacy Kidd's "How Bad I Want Ya".
