Review: The debut album from The Ferguson Rogers Process dropped late last year and finally makes its way to vinyl via Impressed Recordings. Following their debut single 'Live Together' and an early Melbourne show, Tim Rogers and Lance Ferguson's Substance And Or Style is a smart take on hip-hop with tunes like 'Dirty-Clean', which leans further into their disco influences and captures the glitter-in-the-gutter mindset behind the project. With Rogers urging listeners to dive in and embrace the mess, he reminds us that 'the sink is your shrink', encouraging a no-holds-barred approach to getting things done.

Review: In some ways, the work of Figi (AKA Dutch producer Vigi Auke Weemhoff) is reflective of the Netherlands' vibrant, colourful and mixed-up dance scene - one where synthesisers are frequently foregrounded and the rhythms of house, techno, Italo-disco and boogie are mixed and matched in a variety of retro-futurist ways. Certainly, that kaleidoscopic blend is at the heart of the artist's latest album, Fig 1. Rooted in vaporwave, Hi-NRG and Italo-style synth sounds, it's a confident and sonically sparkling set that puts melodic motifs and catchy riffs at the heart of the action. For proof, check standouts 'Belka-Strelka' (an acid-flecked, drum machine-driven chunk of 80s elctro-disco), 'Fig 1', the Klakson-style electro hustle of 'ADSL' and the ultra-deep, dreamy, Endorphins-releasing wonder that is 'Ornex'.

Review: The 4CD box set of First Choice's essential recordings for Salsoul's Gold Mind imprint is here for the disco, soul and pop fan. This collection spans 45 tracks, including expanded editions of their three full-length albums and a specially curated fourth disc with remixes and re-imaginings. Newly remastered by Nick Robbins, the set highlights key tracks such as 'Doctor Love', 'Let No Man Put Asunder', 'Double Cross', and 'Love Thang', which became seminal dancefloor anthems in the late 70s. Early hits like 'Armed And Extremely Dangerous' and 'Smarty Pants' paved the way for their influential contributions to disco, and the set captures the essence of their impact. The collection features productions from notable names including Norman Harris, Ron Kersey, and Tom Moulton, alongside mixes by prominent remixers like Frankie Knuckles and Shep Pettibone. Included is a deluxe booklet designed by Roger Williams, featuring detailed liner notes by Craig Seymour, a 2024 interview with original member Rochelle Fleming, and essays from reissue producers Tim Dillinger and Joe Marchese. This comprehensive set celebrates First Choice's legacy and their extensive influence on dance music.

Review: Eddie Fisher's The Promise is a rare and under-the-radar 1985 session from the East St. Louis guitarist, best known for The Next One Hundred Years and The Third Cup. Though never a mainstream star, Fisher's legacy has grown through the years, thanks to DJs and crate diggers who uncovered his unique blend of boogie, jazz and funk. Released on his own Nentu label, The Promise remains one of the most elusive records in his catalogue, a boogie jazz funk essential that has been long out of print.

Back in the heyday of the Scando-Disco scene, Jann Marius Dahle had a flurry of records as Fjordfunk and under his own name. Rightly recognised by the leaders in that scene, he's been quiet for the best part of 20 years, but now he returns with the stunning, fully-rendered wonderment of "Infinite Zest". This is an album bursting with colour and musicality, as gorgeous instrumentation meets with tenderly executed disco with a distinctly Norwegian mood. From the starry-eyed synth interplay of "Alina" to the noodling funk of "Nussing", Marius Dahle's skill as an arranger and producer is a revelation. A well-deserved, long awaited return to the fray from a rightful peer of Prins Thomas, Lindstrom et al..

Review: Stand Tall marks another adventurous venture from versatile producer Flevans, showcasing his knack for infectious hooks across a spectrum of genres. From disco to soul to electronica, with a surprising nod to drum & bass, Flevans demonstrates his ability to seamlessly blend diverse musical influences. Review: Following a pair of well-received albums on Juicebox Recordings (not to be confused with A Guy Called Gerald's 1990s label of the same name), self-styled "nu-funk" duo Franc Moody have transferred to Night Time Stories for the release of new album Chewing The Fat. Like its predecessors, it blends a left-of-centre, Hot Chip style sensibility with colourful and nostalgic synth sounds, disco strings, good grooves and nods aplenty to both 21st century electronica and the Halcyon days of synth-funk in the 1980s. The results are frequently superb, with highlights including the throbbing-but-sparse 'Square Pegs In Round Holes', jaunty opener 'Driving On The Wrong Side of the Road' and the blissful, tactile and string-laden nu-disco bounce of 'Bloodlines'.

Review: London-based duo Franc Moody is made up of Ned Franc and Jon Moody and thesis their third studio album. Chewing The Fat marks a fresh chapter for the duo and is packed with unusual and interesting sounds made with mellotrons and drum machines. Across the course of the disco odyssey, it captures themes of adventure and enchantment and reflects moments of excess before recognition of being grounded by reality. In other words, it is a great summation of life's highs and lows in musical form.

Review: This new album marks a bold new chapter for Franc Moody that offers a window into their evolution into a more mature, reinvented outfit with an intriguing sound. This album dives deep into the duo's creative depths and finds them breaking their own musical rules. Partly recorded at LA's 64 Sounds Studio and Damon Albarn's Studio 13 in West London, the album draws heavily from Albarn's unique synth collection including rare Russian models. Influenced by live performances from Massive Attack and LCD Soundsystem, the record shifts away from disco towards a grungier, grittier and more attitude-driven sonic palette so has a raw and experimental essence unlike their previous releases.

Review: The reissue of Fratelli Malibu's "Ciro Miami" brings a refreshed take on Andrea De Fazio and Paolo Petrella's imaginative project. Known for their work with the "Nu Guinea" live band, De Fazio and Petrella infuse "Ciro Miami" with a nostalgic yet futuristic soundscape, highlighting their deep love for synthesisers and drum machines. The album's music vividly portrays the escapades of Ciro, a Neapolitan emigre chasing the American Dream. Through a blend of bright synths and punchy drum patterns, it captures the allure of neon-lit nights, opulent car culture, and the dizzying highs and lows of excess. The tracks evoke the excitement of cocktail bars and gambling dens, as well as the pulsating rhythms of video games and space fantasies. Review: After their debut collab on this label back in 2020, Afro-Cosmic pioneer Daniele Baldelli and sometime FPI Project member Marco Fratty are back once again with a new album, Graffito that taps into all their many years of experience at the forefront of this sound as producers and influential DJs. It's a record packed with cosmic arps and dazzling synth lines that reach for the stars over heavy, churning drums that lock you in. The track titles give more than subtle hints as to the vibes of these pieces, all of which are utterly timeless and could be long-lost 70s classics or future gems.

Review: Between 1983 and '87, Fun Fun - a studio project fronted by a trio of female vocalists - delivered some of the most commercially successful Italo-disco records around, with a trademark sound that drew much from the club-ready sound of Hi-NRG. This double-disc collection, subtitled 'The Final Edition', rounds up their greatest hits, B-sides, album tracks, alternative mixes and club versions. Fittingly, it begins with their most lauded track of all, the 'Scratch Mix' of 'Happy Station', before offering up such gems as the tactile and dreamy synth-pop perfection of 'Sing Another Song (Remix)', the soaring Hi-NRG pop perfection of 'Baila Bolero', the sing-along joy of 'Give Up Your Fight (Boxer Remix)' - which sounds like a lost Shep Pettibone club rework from 1986 - and a silly-but-fun cover of the Monkees 'I'm a Believer'.

Review: The Italian Funk ensemble Funkool Orchestra debut album 'Latin Freaks' is here. After a couple of highly regarded singles made the rounds, the full album was eagerly anticipated. Get ready for another dose of Neapolitan Funky Disco Boogie madness with a Latin touch. This album has a mixture of rare grooves, Napoli sound, disco Boogie, Latin soul and boogaloo, which is ideal music to soak up the culture of their native Italian coastline. The first run of releases sold out quickly and so might this reissue. Act fast and get one of best new funk bands in the style.
