Brazilian Rhyme (extended mix) (4:33)
My Love (4:32)
Review: Absolute gold from Earth Wind & Fire that was only ever included as filler track on their 1977 All N All album, it's been a staple sample across house and hip-hop ever since, utilised creatively by everyone from Tribe Called Quest and Danny Krivit. Previously only 80 seconds long, Fryer has managed to unearth a previously unreleased extended version that really digs into those honeyed harmonies. "My Love" takes us four years forward to their 13th album Raise! where the musical emphasis has developed from all-out vocal soul to a more restrained rare groove feel. One per customer, AOTN aren't messing around on this one.

Back On You (feat Crystal Winds) (13:28)
Review: Having previously re-invented Eddie Kendricks' 'Date With The Rain' as a luscious lover's rock epic, Athens of the North house band East Coast Love Affair has now turned its attention to another 1970s classic: Roy Ayers' 'Chicago'. In an act of genuine musical genius, they've re-imagined the track as a TB-303 and TR-909-driven chunk of acid house/deep house fusion, effectively updating Ayers' celebration of the Windy City while paying tribute in their own unique way. It's great, as is flipside 'Back on You (featuring Crystal Winds)', a dreamy, immersive and slowly building chunk of sunrise-ready, bongo-sporting musical deepness that's as sun-kissed and emotion-stirring as they come.

Edinburgh has long fancied itself as the Athens of the North, having gained a reputation since the 1700s as a centre for ideas in philosophy, economics and medicine. The Athens Of The North house band are back as East Coast Love Affair and their soulful and emotive deep disco version "Don't Be Afraid", a version of a super rare Disco 45" by Sky's The Limit, followed by a low slung and minimalistic afro house workout titled "Taken For Granted" on the flip.

Confrontations (5:21)
Shake (5:58)
Review: Athens Of The North get themselves in party mode with a fourth EP from East Coast Love Affair. There is some series fun to be had in these tracks, with side one. 'Confrontations,' being a rebuild of a rare disco funk 45 by Homegrown Syndrome. On the backside is 'Shake' which goes deeper but still has plenty of dance floor appear. It has tropical perc and whirring electronics that just scream 'dance' while the actual screaming vocal reminds of Moby classic 'Go!' These are hefty tunes, rare as you like, but immediately accessible and high impact.

Review: The imperious Athens of the North goes hard with this latest stomping disco thumper from East Coast Love Affair on limited 12". Anyone who has been to the Athens of the North Disco Club at Sneaky Pete's in Edinburgh any time recently will likely have heard these as they are frequent classics there. They always get such good and sweaty reactions that the label has pressed them up - in limited quantities though so don't sleep on it. 'I'm So Glad' is a hard and heavy and steamy banger then 'Miracles' is a more loved up victory lap for end of the night fun.

Review: We've announced our undying love for Athens Of The North many times before and its releases like this which make us want to do so again. It comes from East Coast Love Affair and is a late-night jam of epic proportions that chugs on a deep disco tip. The sultry vocals are from Shetland-born and Edinburgh-based r&b singer and songwriter Philomenah who graduates from backing singer with this group to front and centre star. A lovely house dub brings some club weight on the flip while bonus beats seal the deal.

Get Down (4:25)
Can You Deal (4:41)
Review: Athens Of The North can usually be found honing their expert craft of unearthing nigh impossible to find disco, and reissuing it in the utmost quality. However, the work of East Coast Love Affair (Euan Fryer and Nick Moore) is deceiving, as it adopts the image of one of said reissues while actually being fully contemporary music. 'Get Down' tops up a slew of master-quality releases for the label, expropriating a vocal line from obscure Minneapolis 'lo-fi' band Quiet Storm and putting it back into an entirely new, drunk-and-high instrumental context (think lasers, whistles, funk basses, an overall hazy sound). 'Can You Deal', on the flip, lends Quiet Storm a similar treatment, albeit for a cleverly hi-lo-fi disco house treatment.

Tonight (dub) (3:21)
Review: Athens of the North 'house band' East Coast Love Affair recently returned to action with 'I'm So Glad', a driving disco-funk outing tailor-made for sweaty club sessions. For this speedy follow-up, they've recruited effortlessly soulful vocalist Theo Suess and musically flipped the script. Built around skittish lo-fi beats, immersive chords and bubbly synth-bass, 'Tonight' sits somewhere between deliciously deep house and lo-fi boogie. It's genuinely brilliant, with Suess providing an immaculately emotive lead vocal on the A-side main mix. The flip-side 'Dub' is superb, too, with snippets of Suess's vocals echoing across an enveloping, loved-up instrumental backing track.

Date With The Rain (8:03)
Dub With The Rain (7:54)
Review: Nick "Linkwood" Moore and Euan Fryer established East Coast Love Affair with the idea of making it the "Athens of the North house band". They've recently released a slew of singles, of which this sparkling, soulful cover version of Eddie Kendricks' favourite 'Date With The Rain', featuring the silky voice of lover's rock legend Peter Hunningale, is arguably the most revelatory. Rich in leisurely but ear-catching drum machine patters, warming bass and spakrling synth sounds, the duo's full vocal cover version sits somewhere between lover's rock, street soul and mid-80s electrofunk. Fittingly, it comes backed with 'Dub With The Rain', a delay-laden instrumental take that subtly showcases the depth and beauty of the pair's backing track while also adding a little extra low-end grunt. Simply sublime.

East Coast Love Affair - "Love Chug" (7:00)
BDK - "Pure Sass" (6:46)
Review: Love Chug by East Coast Love Affair and BDK delivers two distinct approaches to peak-time dancefloor energy, perfect for any house club setting. Side-1 features 'Love Chug' by East Coast Love Affair, a track that expertly builds with a driving disco vibe. A powerful guitar riff takes the lead, while a filtered hook pushes the sound deep into house territory, creating an immersive experience that evolves throughout. On Side-2, BDK's 'Pure Sass' offers a strong, uplifting house track that borders on gospel house. Its vibrant energy and soulful vibe are reminiscent of classic Jasper Street tracks, making it an irresistible choice for the dancefloor. Together, these tracks provide a dynamic balanceione that builds and one that never lets upiensuring that the energy stays high all night.

East Coast Affair - "Without You" (feat Avelino Pitts & L Ross) (7:04)
Mary Love' Comer - "Come Out Of The Sandbox" (East Coast Love Affair mix) (6:43)
Review: Having recently made their debut via a fine lovers' rock cover of Eddie Kendricks classic 'Date With The Rain', East Coast Love Affair (AKA "the Athens of the North house band", according to member and label founder Euan Fryer) return with something rather different. 'Without You' is a deliciously dreamy, effortlessly soulful vocal deep house number that's as immersive, warm and comforting as a loved-up hug from that special person in your life. It sounds like it could have been made in NYC or NJ in the very late 1980s, but that's no bad thing. Over on the flip Fryer and his collaborators provide an authentic, boogie era-style extended remix of Mary Love Comer's 'Come Out of The Sandbox', giving it a reverential but far more DJ-friendly twist.

A Minute Too Late (7:34)
United Spiritual Singers - "Not A Minute Too Late" (Tom Noble mix) (6:50)
Review: Since 2020, Athens of the North's in-house band, East Coast Love Affair, has been serving up increasingly impressive slabs of retro-futurist brilliance. Previously, they've turned their hand to spacey jazz-funk/house fusion ('Don't Be Afraid'), deep vocal house ('Without You'), disco-funk ('Confrontations') and lovers rock (a superb cover of Eddie Kendricks' 'Date With The Rain'). This time round, they join forces with veteran gospel-soul choir United Spiritual Singers to deliver an incendiary disco-funk cover of the outfit's obscure (and recently reissued) 'A Minute Too Late'. The scorching, club-ready original mix comes accompanied by a superb Tom Noble rework that re-images the track as a Boyd Jarvis/Paul Simpson style proto-house heater full of reverb-laden vocals, echoing drum machine percussion and addictive synth-bass.

Shake Your Body (At The Disco) (2:54)
Review: Athens of the North has barely put a foot wrong of late, but even by their high standards the label's latest 45 is rather special. It sees them flip a thoroughly obscure modern soul seven-inch originally released in 1980 on a "tiny local label" in the U.S called Shore Records. It was, and remains, the sole release by the mysterious E.S Funk. A-side 'Funny Feeling' offers a delicious fusion of floor-friendly grooves - check, in particular, the crunchy, snare-heavy beat - immaculately played and produced instrumentation and a catchy chorus. 'Shake Your Body (At The Disco)' is an altogether funkier, club-focused affair whose most prominent features are a rubbery slap-bass line, dancer-friendly drum-breaks and horn and synth lines that seem to be playfully sparring with each other.

Is It Really That Bad (2:34)
Review: Originally out in a distant but very relatable 1971, what we have here is perhaps one of the rarest funk 7"s that has ever graced our charts. No lies, no exaggerations. This two-track beauty by Everyday People, out through the timeless Forte label way back when, has been the dream of many a digger, and it's kind of surprising that we're sat here writing this review while the record is still in stock. "Super Black" is a monstrously rolling funk gem that's adaptable to any sort of room or dancefloor, backed by those majestic vocals, and "Is It Really That Bad" acts as the neat instrumental to top it all off. We know the A-side has been remastered from the original tapes, while the B-side might be a direct lift from one of the few original copies in existence. Either way, you ain't gonna find it anywhere else.

Review: From their base all the way up in Edinburgh, Athens Of The North have single handedly reintroduced a whole world of amazing soul, funk and disco sounds over the last few years. Some are well known classics that have been long out of print, some are gems that were missed first time round. Next up is a one sided ska 7" from Sonia that has been remastered and reissued for the first time since its original release. A firm favourite with roots lovers, this version of "Easier To Love" got a play by Floating Points on his NTS show and so immediately soared in popularity, and it's easy to see why.

Review: One of the joys of Athens of the North's East Coast Love Affair project - an in-house band with a twist - is its' joyous musical eclecticism. Previously, they've delivered boogie, house, street soul, funk and disco. On this debut album, the collective spent some time in the studio with friend-of-the-family and Pikes Ibiza resident For Mankind (real name Russ Forman), and as a result the set has a dreamy, colourful and picturesque Balearic vibe. Of course, the influences are a bit wider than that - think dub, proto-house, ambient, Larry Hard-style deep house, Sun Ra and Brazilian music for starters - but that descriptor does neatly sum up what's on offer. Deep, evocative, pretty and impeccably produced, it's the most well-rounded and musically expansive East Coast Love Affair release to date.
