Review: Viaje Sideral is a cosmic journey led by El Leon Pardo and his ancestral instrument, the kuisi, which is a pre-Colombian flute that traditionally symbolises resistance and survival. This second album from Pardo explores humanity's connection with the stars by blending Caribbean percussion, analogue synths, deep bass, electric guitars and the distinctive sounds of kuisis and trumpets. The tunes channel the tropical psychedelia of the 70s and 80s while incorporating ambient and electronic influences from artists like Terry Riley and Kraftwerk. Viaje Sideral is a great mix of dreamlike astral sounds with tropical rhythms that mean both the earthly and the cosmic are explored.

Review: Ammar El Sherei's 1976 instrumental gem is one of those cult albums that record collectors love to have in their arsenal to, well, show off with. It finds the legendary Egyptian composer reinterpreting seven classics by Mohamed Abdel Wahab and in doing so he waves traditional Arabic melodies into funky arrangements and electric keyboard experimentation. This hypnotic fusion highlights El Sherei's unique perspective and knack for bridging heritage and innovation. Curated and annotated by Arabic music expert Mario Choueiry from Paris' Institut du Monde Arabe, this reissue features newly remastered audio and original Soutelphan artwork so is a no-brainer for fans of vintage yet adventurous Arabic grooves.

Review: British singer-songwriter Elderbrook is best known for the vocals on 2017's 'Cola', a Grammy-nominated single with CamelPhat, but now he shows a much broader range of sounds with his new album Another Touch which he bills as "a journey of personal discovery." It builds around themes of life's love, loss, ups and downs but essential is a collection of very accessible and feel-good dance-pop hits for large-scale clubs. The production takes the form of lots of catchy and melodic house and tech grooves while his vocals are a mix of falsetto and more moody sung-spoken deliveries. It's an album that very much chimes with the crossover dance sound of now.

Review: Often perceived as the UK's consulate of psychedelic, sludgy stoner-doom akin to US counterparts Sleep, Eyehategod and Bongzilla, the elusive and crushing Electric Wizard found themselves staring down the abyss of creative purpose once the 2020 pandemic hit. According to lead vocalist/guitarist/primary songwriter Jus Oborn - "We'd been gigging for two years at that point, around America three times, going to Japan and Australia, and we were sounding pretty good by the end of it. When the pandemic happened, we thought, 'Fuck it, maybe we'll never play again.' So we went into the jam room and played the songs to get them on tape to capture how we were playing at the time." Descending to their crypt/practice space located on the outskirts of the English Westcountry, the band would perform a bombastic live set for no audience whatsoever, recorded directly to a 16-track tape machine, with the fuzzed out, chaotic results dubbed Black Magic Rituals & Perversions Vol. 1. While you can thank the Ganja Gods the band still have the ability to tour, if you've yet to experience the Wizard in all of their raw, heaving, hefty glory, this voyeuristic fly-on-the-wall earful should provide ample warmth in the interim.

Review: Iconic movie classic Beetlejuice is back and we for one have enjoyed its return. Tim Burton's 1988 cult classic has been reimagined for modern audiences in 2014 and came complete with a new soundtrack. The original score, composed by the legendary Danny Elfman, blends whimsical melodies with eerie undertones, perfectly capturing the film's quirky and haunting vibe. Highlights of the original include Elfman's iconic main titles, which have become synonymous with Burton's gothic style. The new soundtrack also features standout tracks like Alfie Davis & The Sylvia Young Theatre School Choir's rendition of 'Day-O' and Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting," adding fresh dimensions to this timeless, offbeat classic.

Review: If you don't know (well, even if you do know it is still true), Californian multi-instrumentalist Brian Ellis is Egyptian Lover's keyboard player, and is also a member of Campus Christi with Peanut Butter Wolf. He steps out alone here with a new and outlier funk album that shows off his idiosyncratic style. It is a raw and dense sound that mixes up bold funk and gritty psychedelic soul while embracing the darker edges of both styles. Along the way, Ellis explores themes of truth, authenticity and the pitfalls of wealth while reflecting on the cost of giving away one's heart. Tracks like 'The Real Deal' and 'Money Drives Me Crazy 'capture these ideas with unfiltered emotion.

Review: German saxophonist Johannes Enders is the dynamic tour de force behind this new record which draws inspiration from Pharoah Sanders' emotional intensity. Along with his band, he creates a unique and original sound that is never derivative of its influences but instead works them into all new forms. Through nine carefully crafted compositions, the musicians build a bridge back to Sanders' legacy while showcasing their own interpretation of his style. The result is a blend of deep, soulful jazz that expands upon Sanders' musical foundations with plenty of swing.

Review: Lawrence Englsh's new album was born out of a commission by curator Jonathan Wilson to create a sound environment for the Naala Badu building at the Art Gallery of NSW. It is a deeply atmospheric album that explores the relationship between sound and architecture and reflects the building's design, with its name meaning "seeing water" in the Gadigal language. The piece was crafted with a collaborative spirit by incorporating contributions from a diverse group of artists including Amby Downs, Claire Rousay and Jim O'Rourke. The resulting composition blends ambient textures and long-form sound prompts that capture the essence of place as an evolving, subjective experience. It's a work that highlights the porous nature of sound, and as a standalone work also succeeds in sinking you in deep.

Mixing Colours was their first album on Deutsche Grammophon and this reissue reminds us why the par are so well known for revolutionising music-Brian through innovative pop treatments and Roger with ambient synth/piano works. This collaboration reflects their shared genius and guides you through rich soundscapes blending mood and place into immersive auditory experiences. Crafted over several years, this poetic collection highlights the brothers' mastery and is a deep dive into ambient sound.

Review: Benjamin Epps sharpens his craft with L'enfant sacre de Bellevue, the successor to La grande desillusion, amounting to the second of two records to excavate the French rapper's history and personal growth through self-reflective, fine-tipped lyricism. This is a record driven by ambition and vulnerability, tracing the contours of personal struggle, pride, and purpose; Epps balances tight productions with a fierce bravado, one not considered counter to introspection or emotive soul-bearing. Epps operates with clarity and control, further solidifying his status as one of the most technically gifted voices in French hip-hop today.

Review: Eroya is a Lagos-based collective bridging generations of musicians who trace Nigerian music from the 1940s to today's Naija grooves. Their sound weaves so called styles such as palm-wine, agidigbo, juju, highlife, Afro-funk and Afrobeat traditions. Key members include Sina Ayinde Bakare, son of juju pioneer Ayinde Bakare, juju legend Fatai Rolling Dollar, Afro-funk saxophonist Prince Eji Oyewole and Afrobeat pianist Duro Ikujenyo of Fela Kuti's Egypt 80. Highlights on this album include Alaba Pedro's soulful 'Ekaete', Tejebaby's hypnotic 'Africa', and Oyewole's flute-led 'Experience'. With its bubbling jazz textures and deep rhythmic energy, Eroya is a perfect tribute to Nigeria's enduring musical contributions.

Their 1979 debut album Beat Rhythm News (Waddle Ya Play?) reached number 11 on the UK Indie chart. In 1995, she rejoined X-Ray Spex for Conscious Consumer and in 2022, Essential Logic returned with the boxset Logically Yours, followed by 2024's Rekalibrated, featuring diverse remixers. This 45th Anniversary Deluxe edition includes the original album, a bonus album of Essential Logic's 1978-1983 recordings and new sleeve notes by Lora.

Review: Unveiled as part of Record Store Day 2025 celebrations and produced by Zev Feldman in collaboration with the Bill Evans Estate, Further Ahead: Live in Finland 1964-1969 is a remarkable double album collection of previously unreleased recordings by the legendary jazz pianist. The set features intimate performances from Evans' iconic '60s trios plus a special 1965 session with alto saxophonist Lee Konitz. Pressed on great sounding heavyweight vinyl, this version includes rare photos, essays by Marc Myers and Gil Goldstein and reflections from Evans' trio members Chuck Israels, Eddie Gomez and Marty Morell, which makes it a real authority on Evans' work.

Review: Since turning his hand to music production midway through the last decade, XL Recordings owner Richard Russell has delivered a couple of predictably hard to pigeonhole, guest-packed albums as Everything is Recorded. Russell, of course, has an admirably bulging contacts book and as deep a knowledge of British music - be it hip-hop, grime, rave, jazz, experimental electronica or otherwise - as anyone. The depth of both is naturally evident on third album Temporary, with Russell and a dizzying list of guests delivering atmospheric, sample-rich fusions of head-nodding, hip-hop leaning grooves, field recordings-heavy sample collages, woozy dream pop, sub-heavy nods to UK bass, slow-motion neo-folk, blunted trip-hop, contemporary UK jazz, hazy Americana and much more besides. That it works as a coherent and sonically adventurous album is testament to Russell's increasing skill as a producer and standalone musical artist.

Review: The Butcher Basement is a reimagined and blood-soaked rebirth of Extermination Dismemberment's 2010 debut album, which is dripping with gore and heavy with brutality. The wholly re-recorded release captures the grotesque atmosphere of its original conference but with added detail worked into the sounds. With these revamped compositions of fresh material rooted in their early style, plus sharpened production, these metal sounds hit harder than ever and thrive in morbid theatrics. Rather than just a simple reissue, The Butcher Basement is a whole new resurrection.

Review: Ensemble Modern and experimental, Berlin-based music composer and sound artist Hainbach come together for Primer, an album sourced from their 2022 Checkpoint concert and reworked in the studio with bassist Paul Cannon. The record transforms their fine live performance into a rich, immersive home listening experience with Hainbach's signature use of nuclear research gear, tape loops and vintage electronics weaving haunting, ever-shifting textures throughout. As such the pieces pulse with a sonic spark that captures the spirit of experimentation and collaboration and is taps into plenty of avant-garde thinking in its approach to drone and ambient.

Review: This 1965 collaborative album brings together some of the international music world's finest talents. Featuring Nara Leao's soothing vocals, Edu Lobo's striking guitar and Tamba Trio's vibrant harmonies, 5 Na Bossa captures the essence of Brazilian bossa nova and jazz with a warm and sunny inflexion. With iconic tracks like 'Reza' and 'Zambi' bringing Latin jazz flair, and Edu Lobo's 'Estatuinha' offering more ruminative folk sounds, this is a brilliant album for those who like South American sounds in all their many guises. The album was recorded live at the Paramount Theater in Sao Paulo and is truly essential listening.

Review: Jeff Parker and his ETA IVtet are back with their first new music since 2022's Mondays at Enfield Tennis Academy. The album delves into improvised jazz grooves and features longtime collaborators Anna Butterss on upright bass, sax from Josh Johnson and Jay Bellerose on drums. The compositions are carefully crafted to capture the essence of a single night's setlist and reflect the unique atmosphere of the now-defunct Enfield Tennis Academy. Parker channels this space into a beautifully layered and dynamic piece that builds intricate, shifting textures from simple musical ideas that evoke a rich, immersive listen.

Review: Espen Berg's Maetrix captures the pianist and composer at a bold creative high, as he upscales his craft, this time working with the celebrated Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. Originally premiered to a full ovation at the 2017 Molde International Jazz Festival, this six-part suite finally sees release, recorded between Oslo's Rainbow Studio and Ora Studio in Trondheim. Berg furthers his rep for rhythmic complexity and emotive depth to a 14-piece ensemble featuring standout artists Daniel Herskedal, Rob Waring, and Hayden Powell, while vocalists Kirsti Huke and Sissel Vera Pettersen ensure a graceful vocal topline. Echoes of Pat Metheny and Kenneth Dahl Knudsen waft through the compositions, but Maetrix stands firmly in Berg's own voice, radiating the sense of a collaborative effort years in the making.
