Review: Acclaimed free jazz improvisor and all round American music maestro Don Cherry has a vast discography that covers just about all points on the spectrum. Here & Now found the famed trumpeter work with plenty of epic rock guitars on a collection of high octane and dense tracks. They were recorded in December 1976 and released on Atlantic in the same year and a wealth o guest musicians continued to the record's rich sonic tapestry. It might not be his most famous work but it has lots of interesting polyrhythmic percussion work that is well worth checking out.

Review: This classic from Don Cherry (one of many, in truth) was recorded in 1966 and released by Blue Note in August 1967 and it features a stellar lineup including Gato Barbieri, Henry Grimes, Ed Blackwell, Karl Berger, Jean-Francois Jenny-Clark and Pharoah Sanders. This album was a follow-up to Complete Communion and blends the same famously passionate improvisation with subtlety and shows Cherry's exceptional ability to balance intensity and restraint. It is rather frenzied but also well-controlled and is maybe Cherry's most gratifying work for Blue Note.

Review: A previously unreleased recording of the sensational and controversial Turkish theatre play by James Baldwin and Engin Cezzar, Istanbul 1970, is set to make waves. This recording has been licensed by Gokhan Akcura, who was entrusted with the master tape by Engin Cezzar, captures the intensity of a play that was banned by Istanbul authorities in 1970, despite being seen by 30,000 people in just 60 days. The audio has been meticulously restored from the original tape, and comes accompanied by liner notes from Zeynep Oral, Gokhan Akcura, Okay Temiz, and Erinc Guzel (Caz Plak Istanbul). This release brings to light Baldwin's groundbreaking play about gay relationships in a 1970s Istanbul prison. Jazz legend Don Cherry contributed music to the project, enhancing the play's dramatic tension. This lost free jazz gem, part of Caz Plak's Turkish Jazz Trilogy, is finally brought to a wider audience, thanks to this pressing.

Review: On September 1, 1978, the musical trio Codona graced the stage in Willisau, Switzerland, just before their eponymous debut on ECM. This Swiss FM broadcast immortalised their performance, featuring Collin Walcott on sitar, Don Cherry on trumpet, and Nana Vasconcelos on percussion. Together, they spun a mesmerising tapestry of sound. The opening piece, 'New Light,' spans 16 minutes and evokes pure joy with its enchanting melodies and rhythmic intricacies. Codona's magical encounter showcases the seamless interplay of three masterful musicians and this record captures a moment of musical transcendence that continues to resonate to this day.

Review: Legendary jazz man and truly free spirited musical maestro Don Cherry joined up with Swiss pianist and composer George Gruntz and his group in Tunisia and Germany in May and September 1969 to record this. Review: Recorded and released in The Netherlands by Gerry Teekens for his Criss Cross label in 1985, Chet's Choice marked one of the best studio albums from Chet Baker's final years. He would die in The Netherlands after falling from the window of his hotel room in Amsterdam on May 13, 1988. Chet's Choice presents Baker, beautifully captured in stereo, singing and playing the trumpet in an intimate trio format with guitarist Philip Catherine (born in England but raised in Belgium, Chet frequently worked with him from 1983 to 1988) and Belgian bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse on most of the tracks (three tunes were taped during a second session with Dutch bassist Hein van de Geijn). This expanded edition presents the full seven tunes from the original album plus three songs that only previously appeared on the CD edition of Chet's Choice, as well as five amazing never before heard alternate takes, which add nearly 40 minutes of unreleased music to Chet Baker's superb catalogue.
