Review: Look into Charles's history and you'll find he's been a victim of much more than love over the years. Now in his mid 60s, his recording career only really began in earnest 10 years ago. Criminal, really... But the best talent always gets recognised eventually, and Daptone are doing him some serious fast-track justice. Highlights include the country-inspired strumming and harmonies on the album title track, the belting horn-swing of "You Put The Flame On It", the sadder trumpet, alto sax and Hammon cannon melody on "Dusty Blues" and the blend of slamming northern soul style drums and head-bending psychedelia of "Confusion". Don't be a victim: feel the love today.

Review: Once dubbed "the screaming eagle of soul", Charles Bradley passed away in 2017 after a late career surge that saw him finally find the commercial success that had long eluded him. "Black Velvet", his second and final posthumous set, draws on material recorded with long-term producer Tommy "TNT" Brenneck over the course of his career. Much of the material is either exceedingly rare (see his covers of songs by Nirvana, Neil Young and Rodriguez, as well as a sought-after funk duet with LaRose Jackson) or previously unreleased (see "Can't Fight The Feeling", "Fly Little Girl" and the never-before-heard "full band" take on Bradley classic "Victim of Love"). More importantly, it's all exceptionally good, making this a fitting farewell to Floridian soul singer.

Review: Florida's Charles Bradley is often referred to as "the screaming eagle of soul", a tag that we absolutely and wholeheartedly agree with, particularly on this latest EP for Daptone. Although Bradley was born in 1948 and has been making music for donkey's years, the artist came to prominence in the early 2000s, and has been on fire ever since. For starters, it's near impossible to find someone making this sort of soul music in 2016, and love ballads as powerful as "Good To Be Back Home", "Nobody But You", and pretty much every track on here, are not easy to come by. Secondly, we haven't heard an artist as passionate about his country since "God Bless America", a beautiful reminder that the world isn't all that bad, and there are plenty of positive and uncorrupted minds still out there today in the music scene. An unmissable album, for anyone.

Review: As ably teased with their cheeky limited 7" earlier this month, the Staten Island 10-piece let loose with their fourth studio album. Still tighter than a squid's spy hole, still oozing international instrumental allure that will resonate with fans as wide as Fela Kuti and Babe Ruth, still awesome! Each track is an emphatic narrative told with real drama. Wig out to the bluesy, fuzzy displays of Sabbathian guitar domination on "Aphasia", get freaky to the aquatic Afro jazz of "Shattered Winds", immerse yourself in the wild Emerson-style keyboard freneticism and become hypnotised by the writhing snake-like trumpet lead on "Tomahawk". Truly, Burnt Offering will scorch your speakers.
