Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra - "African Kings"
Red - "The Nuts" (original mix)
Homecut - "Time Difference" (feat J-Live - Marc Mac remix)
Kidkanevil - "Good Morning, What's New?" (feat Andreya Triana - Capstone re-version)
Review: Ten years deep, First Word showcase just how timeless their output has been by exploring their vaults and repurposing some of their finest classics 10" re-releases. Never press to vinyl before, each of these cuts surges at the very forefront of hip-hop, funk and world music. Each track is a highlight; "African Kings" is quintessential Afrofunk laced with warm keys and undeniable groove infection, "The Nuts" is futuristic homage to Danny Breaks, Marc Mac conjures the spirit of the Steve Miller Band on his Homecut remix and the Capstone remix of the Andreya Triana-fronted "Good Morning What's New?" is a drum-heavy jazz daydream you'll never want to awake from. Here's to another 10 years!

Go Beyond (instrumental)
Review: Like a cool sea breeze on a hot summer's day, First Word is keeping things fresh with another dancefloor rocker for the selectors. Our resident jazzy beat maestro Cedar has been hard at work in the studio, orchestrating an EP of broken beat bombs to set floors ablaze. Influenced by 70s soul-jazz/funk and 80s electronica his tracks blend lush pads and jazzy overtones with finely tuned beats & rhythms. "Cedar Is My Man" Domu, Co-op, "Cedar mixes are the bomb!" Zero dB, Ninja Tune, "The coolest EP I've heard this year" Afronaught, Bugz In The Attic.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

If you've yet to succumb to the charms of Children of Zeus - and there can't be many out there who haven't - then this "odds and ends" LP offers a neat introduction. Five of the seven tracks have been plucked from the Manchester crew's previous full-length excursions, while the other two - seductively soulful two-step garage reworks of "Vibrations" and "Slow Down" by fellow Manchester resident Zed Bias - have previously been almost impossible to get hold of. Setting aside the club-ready remixes, what "Excess Baggage" proves is that Children of Zeus are one of British music's most essential outfits right now, delivering sensual and life-affirming cuts that brilliantly blend the best aspects of hip-hop, R&B and modern soul.

Goodbye For Now (7:14)
Charge It To The Game (4:32)

Review: The Description Is Not The Described is a much anticipated debut solo release from the hotly tipped Nathaniel Cross. Rolling Stone Magazine once dubbed him The Quincy Jones Of Catford for his mad and diverse skills, and the arranger and trombone player has walls backed up that talk with action. He has recorded and performed with pop giants like Stormy, Emile Sande, Kano and Solange and worked on both Moses Body albums. on his own EP, he masterly draws on the rich heritage of black music from gospel to soul to hip hop and dancehall, but arranges them all in slick jazz styles.

Journey To Love (feat Vanity Jay - Andromeda Jones remix) (5:43)
Review: If you've not yet copped the debut album from Cardiff twosome Darkhouse Family, The Offering, we'd suggest tracking down a copy - it was one of last year's most overlooked beats albums, joyously joining the dots between hip-hop, jazz and neo-soul. Here First Word offers up "An Extra Offering" featuring a quintet of new remixes of album tracks. The quality threshold naturally remains high throughout, with Kaidi Tatham's synth bass-propelled, head-nodding rework of "The Accession" providing an early high watermark. Naturally, DJ Spinna's two reworks are both superb. His "Galactic Soul" version of "Another World" is a string-laden, house tempo synth-soul treat, while the "Galactic Funk" remix of "Just So You Know" brilliantly wraps spacey synth bass and sweet soul vocals around a slipped, off-kilter hip-hop rhythm.

All The Way (feat Tyler Daley & Kaidi Tatham - Flutestrumental) (3:59)
Review: A warm welcome back to the Darkhouse Family, Cardiff's finest purveyors of soul-fired instrumental hip-hop and jazz-funk flavoured broken beats. The good news is that "All The Way", which features the combined talents of guests Tyler Daley and Kaidi Tatham, is every bit as good as anything on their superb 2017 album "The Offering". The A-side original version, in particular, is superb - a languid chunk of head-nodding hip-hop soul rich in double bass, drowsy jazz horns, twinkling pianos and impassioned, emotive vocals. That said, the instrumental flipside revision, which includes extended flute solos where the vocals once say, is also impeccable.

Review: Eye Of The High make a welcome debut on the mighty First Word Records label here with some stellar Brit-funk goodness. This vinyl-only release from the collaborative project headed by DJ and producer and see time Talking Loud artists Femi Fem and Glen Scott opens with the glorious 'Seismic Shift.' The drums are tinged with an Afro skip, the vocals are reminiscent of a 90s heyday for this sound and the cosmic synths stretch out to the sun. 'Elevate' has more funk in its bones and steel drums laced into the skipping groove. Two fresh and feel-good gems for sure.

Takuya Kuroda - "Fade" (KEARL remix) (5:20)
Teotima - "But I Can't" (K15 remix) (4:35)
Review: Earlier this month, First Word Records dropped an epic, digital-only compilation in which members of the label's large family of artists either collaborated with or remixed each other. This 12" boasts four of the collection's undoubted highlights. The EP begins with a simply stunning Kaidi Tatham remix of Allysha Joy's soul-jazz treat 'Better' - think deep broken beat meets liquid jazz-funk and sultry neo-soul - and ends with a fiercely sub-heavy and surprisingly spaced out K15 broken beat rework of Teotima's 'But I Can't'. Sandwiched in between you'll find a jazz-funk-goes-bruk re-wire of Takuya Kuroda's 'Fade' by KEARL (that's K15 and Darkhouse Family's Earl Jeffers) and a wonderful fusion of squelchy synth-jazz and broken beat courtesy of Quiet Dawn and Sarah Williams White.

Review: Wonky meets jazz in this impressive new jazz mini-LP from Japan. Takuya Kuroda is a highly respected trumpeter and arranger born in Kobe, Japan and based in New York City. 'Midnight Crisp' is Takuya's seventh studio album, entirely self-produced and following 2020's highly acclaimed 'Fly Moon Die Soon'. Learning jazz in a higher education environment, he's reapplied his skills to a new solo outing here, blending with his one true loves, afrobeat and hip-hop. The ensuing album is one of myriad midnight moods, tempered by many a virtuosic and mournful piano, digitally-edited drum brush, and trilling trumpet from the mouth of Kuroda himself.

Review: Takuya Kuroda is a highly respected trumpeter and arranger from Kobe, Japan but now based in New York City. Midnight Crisp was his seventh studio album and now First World has had a selection of cuts from it remixed. 'Choy Soda' gets superb treatment in the form of Waajeed's Hi-Tech Jazz remix which jumbles the trumpet motifs with shuffling drums and future soul. On the flip, 'Dead End Dance' gets a signature Kaidi Tatham remix that brings the broken beats and sunny sounds to the fore with more languid jazz notes adding sultriness.

Review: After her magnetic debut EP for Running Circle in 2017, Nottingham's Yazmin Lacey lands on our charts with her follow-up 12", a piece of work that sounds deeply accomplished and expansive for being her second EP to date. Largely roaming within the jazzo-sphere, When The Sun Dips 90 Degress is a beautifully seductive five-tracker, with the artist's voice reigning supreme over the cascading showers of piano keys and subtle electronics, somehow tapping into the Alice Coltrane sort of vibe. There's no harp here, but plenty of soulful charisma. Fear not thy devout jazz fanatic - this can get real deep and real smooth. It's a broken beat fan's dream some true. More from Lacey is, indeed, expected in the remainder of the year. Marvellous stuff.

Review: For those with intimate knowledge of the original West London broken beat scene of the late '90s and early 2000s, the return of IG Culture's New Sector Movements project is big news. Remarkably, 'These Times' contains the first new 'NSM' material in 15 years and sees IG Culture joined by a swathe of guest vocalists and musicians including Allysha Joy, Mike City, Natalie May, Wonky Logic and Alex Phountzi. Musically, it's as on-point as you'd expect, with IG Culture and his merry band confidently striding between rolling, horn-sporting future R&B ('These Times'), jazz-funk-flavoured breakbeat soul (the incredible 'Stand'), head-nodding, Latin-tinged 21st century street soul ('Hope'), Kaidi and Dego style business ('H.E.A.T') and hard-wired, sub-heavy, peak-time ready broken beat (the infectious 'Bless').

Review: First Word's first release of the year and Quiet Storm's first substantial release since his album The First Day, "Human Being: The Short Story Of A Reed" is a beautiful conceptual narrative that explores the idea of a reed yearning to be human but discovering it's not quite as easy as it looks. The music is, however, as beautiful as you'd expect from the Parisian composer. Ranging from the soft pensive vocal texture allure of opener "Human" to the eventual dizzying bewilderment of the finale "Being" by way of stimulating chapters such as the lucid bossa "The Reed" and the eerie, night fog horse ride "Risk It", this is a stunning, stirring piece of work that reveals more and more on every listen.

Review: Chunky grooves from French production outfit Souleance, who released this brand new single ahead of the release of their debut album La Belle Vie. La Gourmandise features three tracks; first up, "Schack" has soundtrack stylised brass stabs, handclap rhythms, female wailing and a killer bassline. Up next, "La Ville Rose" uses heavy breaks underpinning a melancholic female vocal, while "Tryin" is a modern day soul fired love song with sampled vocals and stuttering beats.

Review: Soulist and Fulgeance's Souleance project delivers a 12" of album proportions. As ever, it's every bit as funky as you'd expect it to be. At points it's a steamy, emotional, come-to-bed affair thanks to the sultry keys and vibrating bass of "Hustle" and the hip-shaking slinky lo-fi samba of "Secoue". At other points it's aimed directly at the dance with the high energy disco boogie rattles of "Tartare" and big filtered house struts of "Ratatouille". At all points it's pristinely produced and coated in a Latin soul that Soulist and Fulgeance have made their own. Complete with remixes from Debruits and Uffe and this beyond album proportions.

Review: French funk of the highest order, Fulgeance and DJ Soulist's Souleance project comes of age with this extensive EP. Vibes range from the powerful floor-focussed, synth-heavy P-funk boogie swagger joint "Broobecker" to slo-mo hypnosis that's so distinctive it sounds like a Todd Edwards track being played at a third of the speed ("Georgian Kiss"). Elsewhere we get jiggy to lo-fi fuzzy Afro funk ("Mais Um") and step back to the 80s for an exploration of b-boyism's deepest aspects. Extensive, exciting and exhilarating, Souleance are making a serious mark right here.

Paying homage to acts like Azymuth, 'Guili' is a full adventure that never sits still as the synths and drums lead us into a carnivalesque groove laced with plenty of acid and a delicious slap bass section. 'Toro' continues this organic, live groove feeling with even bigger keys and loose limbed drums driving us to an almighty and chaotic breakdown. For added magic Art Of Tones is on side with a crucial remix. What a session.

Review: First Word's latest must-have 12" sees label regulars Tall Black Guy (AKA hip-hop beat-maker Terrel Wallace) and self-proclaimed "chop artist" 14KT (real name Kendall Tucker) remix each other's tracks. The latter steps up first to re-configure Wallace's Moonchild collaboration "I Will Never Know" as a folksy, bass-heavy chunk of slipped soul/jazz fusion dripping with folksy acoustic guitars and ear-catching vocals. Wallace repays the compliment on the flip, delivering a warm, crispy and R&B-influenced hip-hop soul revision of recent single "The Power Of Same", featuring the seductive vocals of Muhsinah. If soul, jazz and hip-hop all float your boat, this should be an essential purchase.

Review: Record Store Day Edition: Concepts for the annual Record Store Day don't get better than this. Tall Black Guy, Eric Lau and Kidkanevil were invited to Mr Thing's gaff and explore his sizeable vinyl collection. They could sample anything they wished... But, as the title says, no vinyl could leave his house. The result is four examples of pure sample artistry. Eric Lau's "Chop For Mr Thing" takes a Latin strummer and stretches out its harmony over a nagging beats with really cool edits and space. Kidkanevil opts for a sludgier hip-hop approach where one simple loop opens and closes at different spaces over a nod-heavy beat. Elsewhere Tall Black Guy gets dreamy with a tripped out vocal sample and some stunning slippery bass action while Mr Thing provides the best schooling with a classic Dilla style loop that twists the full emphasis on one vocal cry and a weave of classic hip-hop cuts.

Also running a fine in silky soothing solo sounds himself, this 20 minute extended player represents Kaidi at his most relaxed, introspective and subtly euphoric. A mind-blowingly talented multi-instrumentalist who was one of the clearest voices and driving forces in broken beat, Kaidi's skills remain just as slick, smooth and crafted with the fine art of surprise as ever as he follows up his "Changing Times" EP on First Word. "Hard Times" eases us in gently with a smooth jazz funk swoon laced with big orchestral sweeps, "I See What You See" ups the tempo with a superb steppy boogie twist that's loaded with some outrageous p-funk bass fills while "Super Lion" flexes around an afrobeat with full eyes (and feet) on the floor. Finally "We All Breathe The Same Air" closes with big dreamy drama that leaves you hanging for more... Just like all good virtuosos should.

Review: After offering up EPs titled "Hard Times" and "Changing Times" in 2017, Kaidi Tatham returns to First Word to complete the trilogy with "Serious Times". Of course, the music contained within the EP's tightly packed grooves is as joyous, rich as intricate as ever. Check, for example, "Don't Cry Now", a samba-soaked, sun-kissed affair that wraps harmonic freestyle vocals, twinkling electric piano lines and darting jazz-funk bass around a seriously shuffling groove. Tatham's much-discussed jazz-funk influences are once again given an airing on "Sugar", while his fine piano work takes pride of place on instrumental hip-hop head-nodder "Zallom". Best of all, though, is opener "Cost of Living", which emphatically weaves together all of these strands and more besides.

Review: Bruk bastions, the CoOp collective were one of the brightest, most exciting musical movements in the early to mid 2000s with their barbed, broken soul take on bass music emanating from Plastic People playing a heavy role in the forms of contemporary house music, dubstep and all things in between. Freshly reformed since a Boiler Room comeback in 2015 and loaded with new affiliates, the ensemble, First Word proudly present their first collective EP. Ranging from the jittering soundclash bashment of "Spartan Riddim" to the sensual Bias-like harp heaven of "Can't Hold It" via the technoid stutters of "2nd Intention", this marks the start of a very exciting new chapter for the CoOp crew.
