Come Back (2:26)
Review: Not to be confused with the contemporary songwriter Belles, 1960s Canadian soft rockers The Bells, 1980s British pop rockers The Belle Stars, or the seminal Detroit techno anthem by Jeff Mills, Numero Group invite you to step back in time and experience one of the best under-referenced 'response songs' of all time. Taking a lead from Them's 1965 hit 'Gloria', The Belles rework the format to sing about a guy they like. "M-E-L-V-I-I-I... M-E-L-V-I-N, Meeeeelllvviinn" the chorus kind of goes, backing track set to a lackadaisical, classic, jangling, looped rock 'n' roll stomp. Backed with the B-side, 'Come Back', which sets a lighter but brisker mood with its up tempo vocal quartet, delicate snare rolls and catchy six string chords, this is quite the trip to and through another era.

Duodu Wuo Ye Ya (short version) (5:05)
Review: Dan Boadi left his native Ghana to take his highlife sound to American audiences after he had his 1967 breakout debut 'Abrabo'. That was a regional hit and soon after came this tune which was recorded at Paul Serrano's studio in Chicago. It showcased the real breadth and depth of his sound as it called upon reggae, acrobat, halide and funk to demand your ear with a chugging drum groove. Add in the colourful orchestration that makes the tune soar and a you have a record that is a true musical melting pot that stood Boadi pat in his new home of the Windy City.

Codeine - "Atmosphere" (4:52)
Bedhead - "Disorder" (4:55)
Review: Experience two of Joy Division's iconic post-punk tracks like never before with exclusive 7" vinyl from Numero Group. Codeine's 1994 rendition of 'Atmosphere' captures the essence of solitude with a melancholic yet melodic twist that marked the iconic Manchester band's poignant farewell. Meanwhile, Bedhead from Dallas offers a fresh perspective on 'Disorder' and transforms it into vibrant indie rock. Encased in a sleek black and silver sleeve adorned with embossed braille lettering, these twin readings pay homage to Joy Division's enduring legacy while inviting listeners to explore new interpretations of their timeless classics.

Stay Away From Music (4:01)
Review: The rare Stephen LP by Nassau-born multi-instrumentalist Stephen Colebrooke offers elusive sunshine boogie vibes that have long been sought after by those in the know. Recorded at GBI studios in Freeport with guidance from Frank Penn (of Grand Bahama Goombay), two of the tracks from it now get pressed up to this crucial 7" by the faultless Numero Group. Both of these tunes are groove-filled disco delights with both 'Shake Your Chic Behind' and 'Stay Away From Music' sure to do damage on a wide range of dance floors this summer and beyond.

You're All I Need (3:29)
Review: Numero Group has another of their superb soul gems here from former Mind & Matter bandmates James "Jimmy Jam" Harris and Michael Dixon. The duo teamed up in 1978 for this gospel-boogie banger which first came on the private Mad label, so is now mad hard to find. 'You're Everything' is a classy dancer with a big heart and those Good worshipping vocals taking things to new heights. The flip is no slouch either and keeps the grooves coming with 'You're All I Need' another timeless classic that will improve any set and record collection no end.

Music Makes The World Go 'Round (instrumental) (3:23)
Review: Numero's Hottest Sounds Around series has excelled at unveiling a treasure trove of late-70s Caribbean grooves. Now they look to Trinidad where Stan Chaman's Semp label originally presented the Hamilton Brothers' calypso-disco hit 'Music Makes The World Go 'Round' back in 1978. It is a vibrant sound with multi-layered grooves, plenty of inescapable summer vibes and a tropical edge that cannot fail to bring the good times to any session. On the flip is an instrumental that pairs things back to the bubbly rhythms. What's more, it comes on lovely pink vinyl.

What More Can I Say (3:17)
Review: US soul group and Chicago's Southside favourites The Notations endured many musical evolutions in their time. The group released on both major labels and minor ones and had the likes of Sly Johnson and Curtis Mayfield taking care of their production. Numero Group has put together a first overview of their indie-label golden age on the album Still Here 1967-1973 which is full of lush r&b ballads as well as socially-conscious soul. Two of their best now also get pressed up to this 7" with heart-rending A-side and the swooning 'What More Can I Say' both immediately drawing you in. These have been sampled by Anderson.Paak, redveil and so may well sound familiar.

Scenic (4:47)

Porcelain (5:04)
Review: Ozean's eponymous EP, originally recorded in 1993 but now receiving its first vinyl release, is a testament to the band's splendid blend of shimmering, ethereal shoegaze. From the moment 'Scenic' envelops listeners with its swirling distortion and awesome melodies, it's clear that Ozean's music is something special. The dreamy soundscapes of 'Fall' and 'Porcelain' further immerse the listener, transporting them to a world of otherworldly beauty and introspection. Inspired by influences like Slowdive, Cocteau Twins and Lush, Ozean's music captures the essence of the British shoegaze scene while adding their own unique twist. Lisa Baer's otherworldly vocals, influenced by Astrud Gilberto and The Jesus And Mary Chain, perfectly complement the band's atmospheric sound. Despite their brief existence and only two live shows, Ozean's impact is felt profoundly in this remastered EP. Recorded on a Fostex Model 80 1/4" 8-Track reel-to-reel tape recorder, the original cassette recordings have been meticulously remastered for this vinyl release, thanks to Tim Green of Louder Studios. Each track is a timeless snapshot of late adolescent wonder and experimentation, preserving Ozean's legacy for generations to come.

East West Shuffle
Review: Unlike its title, this isn't so much Disco Jazz as a cross between Bollywood and Balearic. As a young woman, Rupa Biswas made a disco record while on holiday in Canada in 1982, originally recorded in Calgary's Living Room Studios 'with a crack team of Indian and Canadian studio rats alike'. This remaster by Numero Group is from the original analogue source material and has been released with the permission of the producers and performers. Featuring the mesmerising 'Moja Bhari Moja' (radio version) on the first side, then flip over for the low-slung 'East West Shuffle'.

Review: A few years after recording at Damon Studios in Kansas City, Bump & The Soul Stompers-led by Jerald "Bump" Scott-rebranded as the Unnatural Funk Band. Unable to find a label for 'I Can Remember' they recorded at Cavern Studios, a unique space built in a Missouri limestone cave. Their track 'Living in the Past' features a nostalgic falsetto, while 'Strange Happenings' showcases a standout funk groove. This previously unreleased music was rediscovered with Scott's help during the Numero Group's research for the Eccentric Soul: The Forte Label collection, which now brings fresh attention to this rare Kansas City soul act.

Review: Numero have put together a definitive reissue here of Antena's much loved and cult classic Camino Del Sol LP that first label in 1982. It is the work of Isabelle Antena, the former au pair for Rick Wakeman of Yes, and two of her teenage friends, and was a contemporary bossanova record that somehow joined the dots between Kraftwerk and Antonio Carlos Jobim. After first release it was long forgotten as Isabelle moved on to work in the world of jazz in Asia. Now it is revived and we're all reminded of what an essential album it is from this shot lived but important outfit.

Review: Bailey's Nervous Kats was a teenage dream who combined surf, rock n' roll, exotica, and r&b in their music. They operated in the rural fringes of Northern California in the 1960s and released only one long player, sadly. The Nervous Kats is it and it now gets reissued by the quality Numero Group. It came right at the end of the band's time together and was released by the Emma imprint in 1965. It's a real doozy of the era and will take you to a time and place you didn't live but make you wish you had.

Review: Calling on major chords for their riffs, emotional angst for lyrical delivery and motoring juggernauts for basslines, the driving rhythms of Boilermaker were hard to ignore once you found them back in the 1990s. Emerging from the San Diego guitar scene at a time when Gen X was obsessed with post-hardcore, the trio - Terrin Durfey, Tim Semple, and Richard Sanderson - described their counterpoint as 'Leucadia-core'. If you need a lesson in what that means, Not Enough Time To Get Anything Halfway Done is probably the best place to begin. Three albums, a stack of singles and rarities. In total, 41 tracks spread over a sprawling four LP box set with a 24 page book to read while immersing yourself. And yes, there's a test at the end to check you actually paid attention. (Juno legal disclaimer: there is no test).

The band was a leading force in Mali's music scene during the 1980s when they blended Wasulu hunter music, griot praises, Senufo dances, Fula and Mandingo tunes with Western psychedelia, blues, and Afrobeat. Their 1982 album captures Diabate's virtuosity and is a showcase of his mastery of the guitar through eight compelling tracks. The resulting album is a gold standard in world music that confirms Diabate's place among the legendary West African guitarists and illustrates his unique ability to fuse diverse musical traditions.

Review: This wonderful album (with equally wonderful artwork) presents a rich, percussive experience that highlights Cuban-born Modesto Duran's significant influence on Latin music and this version is on nice translucent red wax which conveys the heat the music. Duran was a protege of mambo pioneer Perez Prado and his distinctive percussion work graced numerous 1950s hits by artists like Esquivel, Belafonte, Eartha Kitt, and Lena Horne. On his 1960 solo debut, Duran brought together top conga players Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, and Juan Cheda to craft a cinematic fusion of Afro-Cuban, cha-cha, and exotic jazz styles.

Review: Sandy Harless' Songs album represents the Chillicothe, Ohio artist's sole foray into cosmic American music. It came during the 1970s and the height of the hippy movement's mellow phase and was, rather remarkably, funded by a business breeding 27 aquariums of fish. The record blends Appalachian roots with a rich mix of mountain folk, rural rock, and pastoral country. It's brilliantly authentic throughout and is a great representation of "real people" music that captures the essence of the era's down-to-earth vibe. It's one to put on around a campfire on a balmy summer's evening.

However Megira very much did his own thing, and this was no pastiche of olden days but a sincere communication from the bleeding heart of rock n' roll. On his debut album, faithfully repressed here by Numero Group, Da Abtomatic Meisterzinger Mambo Chic there's an almost hauntological quality to the strung out instrumentals, all tremolo twang and undead reverb, which can't help but take you right into the identity of this charismatic and ultimately tragic icon from another dimension.

Review: We're yet to get our ears around a compilation from US label Numero Group that isn't absolutely brilliant. This latest one isn't going to change that, either. Eccentric Soul: The Linco Label dives deep into Civil Rights-era Greensboro, where Black excellence and raw musical talent converged at North Carolina A&T. Local label head Walter Grady tapped a vibrant cast of "townies, homecoming queens, and big men on campus" to craft a revolutionary soul sound rooted in community and resistance. This collection captures the pivotal moment with hometown pride and boundary-pushing grooves coming thick and fast. From basement studios to protest marches, these tracks reflect a powerful cultural awakening and make for a great document of soul's grassroots history.

Review: The Numero group can hardly ever do any wrong and, as per usual, they've steamrolled their way to the top of our charts with a monstrously good new soul compilation. It was ten years ago this year that they released their Homeschooled compilation, which also championed the young talents of the 70s soul scene in the USA, so The Afterschool Special feels like a natural release from their end. And there's just so much talent in here. Number 66 in the series features must-have 7" rarities such as "Runnin' Wild" by Scott Three, who already sounds as mature as any adult, the squeakier voice of Jimi Hill, a gloriously funky little head-trip in "I Love You Still" by Cash, and so much more. This compilation is literally four sides of pure heat, and it's certainly yet another highly recommended Numero bombshell.

Review: Numero's Cabinet of Curiosities series hits double figures here with a 10th essential outing packed with musical treasures. L80s: So Unusual is a brilliantly broad mix that heads to all corners of the world with a sublime mix of downtempo sounds that reach into "icy hot coldwave, Sausalito seafood jazz, Glaswegian goth, makeshift Madonna, Sade spoofs, and Brat Pack balearic." All 12 of the songs here are beguiling and beautiful in equal measure, as is often the way with this great label, with highlights including Nika Rejto's 'More Than Just A Dream' (Edit) and Elisa Waut's 'Being Strong.'

Review: Just in time for the spooky season, the wonderful Numero has put together another of their famously good compilations. This one, Haunted Presence (which comes on lovely 'ghost power' silver vinyl) is packed with Halloween treats from across the label's vast span. It takes in ghoulish garage rock like Slim Martin's 'Haunted After Midnight', skeleton-rattling soul like Bambi Fodera's 'The Moon Turned To Blood' and some proto-metal mutations like Medusa's 'Unknown Fear' as well as haunting 60s rock like Angela Alexander & JD. Saddler's 'Don't Make Me Kill You' across 20 tracks that will enliven any seasonal get-together.

Review: The early Cold War years had quite a lot to be envious of. Clearly defined lines of partisanship and international allegiances, rather than this 'each-country-for-itself' end game we seem to be setting up to play right now. Then there was the sexy, swoon-y, seductive and thoroughly intoxicating pop sounds emanating from teenage bedrooms, shopping malls, concert halls and anywhere else you can think of. Call Me Old Fashioned hits the nail on the latter's head. Squarely. The soundtrack to the first part of Louis Wayne Moody's spy trilogy, this is all about those tunes that make you want to sip Manhattans while gazing at some red-lipped diva cast in the low-lit spots of a late night cabaret restaurant. Or lose yourself in the rhythm of a live Latin jazz ensemble, or the bombast of big band. Picture painted, it's a transportive release, even if you've never seen or heard of the movies.

Review: Heavyweight champions of the compilation world, Numero Group, defend their undisputed title once more with this collection of greats from San Antonio mogul Abe Epstein's Dynamic label. In its heyday, it became a hub for soulful music with its flagship band the Commands scoring a hit in 1966 with 'No Time For You.' Their success led to 20 more singles over 30 months and Epstein's inclusive studio welcomed a diverse racial mix of Texas talent which in turn created a melting pot of sound. This collection reflects that across 28 gems from groups like the Tonettes, Little Jr. Jesse & the Tear Drops and Bobby Blackmon & His Soul Express all exploring different soul niches.

Review: Resurfacing from obscurity after 58 years in the Louis Wayne Moody Pictures vault, this unearthed soundtrack unveils a treasure trove of melancholic melodies, mournful guitars, and eerie echoes. It is another of the seemingly endless gems to come from the great folks at Number Uno and is laden with themes of abandonment, shattered dreams, and existential ponderings. The album, titled They Move in the Night, weaves a narrative of moral ambiguity and tearful farewells, set against the backdrop of lukewarm diner coffee and the relentless pursuit of society's shadows. Fascinating stuff.

It is 20 years since the label did their first volume of the long-running Eccentric Soul series but all these years later it still bangs.

Review: Say the words 'pre-teen pop' to most people and they'll make for the hills faster than you can say "be afraid, be very afraid". In the case of X-Cetera, though, the presumption of garbage is inaccurate, albeit the underlying feeling of something being off i perhaps even unsettling i remains. Self-recorded in a very different time and a very different world, on the cusp of a new millennium and all its promises (lol), Jessica Hall, Ayden Mayeri, and sisters Janet and Mary Washburn give a wonderful example of how talented kids can be on Summer 2000. It's also a strange and weirdly i accidentally i trippy ride from beginning to end. Marrying elements of trip hop, r&b, indie, sugarcane pop and acoustic, the sickly sweet and naturally childish lyrics and delivery leave a macabre air lingering. Like the nursery rhyme in a horror movie, sort of. Once filed under chart hopeful, now avant garde.
