Review: The Ballistic Brothers were behind a great many infusion of breakbeat, jazz and Afro house during the 1990s, smashing onto the scene with the Junior Boy's Own twinkler of an EP, 'I'll Fly Away' (the lead track on which works just as easily at drum & bass speeds as it does at tapper-out tempos) as well as the complementary debut album, London Hooligan Soul. The Eccentric Afros were an early, assistive alias, used by an intermixing but not exhaustive list of some of the same producers involved in TBB before they assumed the latter name proper: Ashley Beedle, Rocky & Diesel (X-Press 2), Uschi Classen and Dave Hill. This second edition of "lost tape" reissues rediscovers some of the trio's best and most esoteric breaks-plates, which would've been heard on heavy rotation in the amalgamate days of the 90s London clubbing scene, yet not all of which have been put out properly until now.

Review: Some rare dancehall history is brought to light with this new reissue from Acid Jazz. Originally released only as a white label promo via Jah Thomas's Midnight Rock, Early B Meets Super Cat compiles early Channel One sessions powered by the iconic Roots Radics and features two standout artists: Early B and a then rising Super Cat, whose energetic side-stepping vocals allowed Thomas's production prowess to shine. Though only promo copies were pressed initially, this release allows a new generation of fans to deep dive into formative dancehall grooves full of crisp rhythms, vintage dub tones and real vocal energy.

Review: More than two decades away informed on this latest Totally Wired compilation: A New Collection From Acid Jazz, a fresh chapter in one of the label's most defining projects. Originally launched in 1988 by Eddie Piller and Gilles Peterson, the series captured the sound of the emerging acid jazz scene, then a tight-knit movement centred on forward-thinking club culture and rediscovered rarities. This latest instalment reflects a label in confident form, with new signings like Earth-O-Naut and Quiet Fire laying beside exclusive material from Matt Berry, Chris Bangs, and a rare Soul Revivers 45 featuring Kokoroko's Shiela Maurice-Grey and Anoushka Nanguy. Vintage highlights include the Acid Jazz Orchestra reinterpreting Corduroy and a floor-shaking take on 'Rock Steady' by The Brand New Heavies.

Review: Countdown Records was founded by Eddie Piller, Maxine Conroy and Terry Rawlings and captured the essence of the mid-80s Mod revival and New Wave scene while pushing acts like Makin' Time, The Prisoners and The Kick towards mainstream recognition. Despite its innovative approach, the label struggled due to the collapse of Stiff Records and the corporate dominance of the era. However, the label's influence lived on through Piller's Acid Jazz label and this compilation showcases the best of Countdown's legacy with plenty of classic tracks and rarities. It's presented with a stylish Modernist design that coincides with a book that delves deeper into its history.
