Review: The reissue of Booker Little 4 & Max Roach as part of the Tone Poet Vinyl Series is an exciting announcement for jazz fans. Booker Little, a brilliant trumpeter whose life was tragically cut short at 23, left an indelible mark on the jazz world. This 1958 album, recorded when Little was just 20, showcases his extraordinary talent both as a musician and composer. The LP features the dynamic interplay between Little and Max Roach, one of jazz's most influential drummers, along with George Coleman on tenor sax, Tommy Flanagan on piano and Art Davis on bass. It opens with a spirited rendition of Miles Davis' 'Milestones', setting the tone for the session, before the standards 'Sweet and Lovely' and 'Moonlight Becomes You' are given fresh interpretations. But the heart of the album lies in Little's original compositions: 'Rounder's Mood,' 'Dungeon Waltz,' and 'Jewel's Tempo.' These tracks highlight his inventive melodic sense and technical strength. The Tone Poet Series ensures an audiophile-quality experience, with meticulous mastering by Kevin Gray and a deluxe presentation that lives up to the highest standards.

Review: This Tone Poet Vinyl Edition presents Horace Parlan's quintessential hard bop quintet session. Known for his work with Charles Mingus, Parlan shines alongside George Tucker, Al Harewood, Grant Green, and Booker Ervin. The music swings with an effortless groove, showcasing Parlan's bluesy piano stylings and the band's tight interplay. Mastered from the original analogue master tapes by Kevin Gray, this reissue captures the warmth and vibrancy of the original recording. A must-have for any fan of hard bop and classic Blue Note sounds.

Next Time I Fall In Love (5:17)
Review: An album that stands as one of American jazz pianist Silver's last great albums for Blue Note. Recorded in early 1968 with two mostly different quintets, the album features trumpeter Charles Tolliver, alternating tenor saxophonists Stanley Turrentine and Bennie Maupin, bassists Bob Cranshaw and John Williams and drummers Mickey Roker and Billy Cobham. Silver's rhythmic, economical piano style is often described as funky and nowhere is this more evident than on the album's standout opener, 'Psychedelic Sally'. With its jubilant horn theme and funky Memphis soul-inspired bass riff, the track is a rollicking seven-minute classic that blends 60s funk with 50s bop. The rest of the album maintains a playful spirit. 'Rain Dance' presents a campy, American Indian-style theme, while 'Jungle Juice' offers an exotic, tribal flavour. The warm, loose-swinging title track, 'Serenade to a Soul Sister' and the ethereal 'Kindred Spirits' add depth to the set. The album closes with the gentle piano trio ballad 'Next Time I Fall in Love'. While the first half of the album leans into a bluesy, funky vibe with Turrentine's soulful saxophone, the latter half shifts to a more boppish feel with Maupin, is a different but equally engaging dynamic. Through it all, Silver's philosophy of keeping politics and anger out of his music shines, delivering a joyous and tightly performed soul-jazz classic.

Review: A decade into his career, Horace Silver recorded what many consider one of his finest albums at the renowned Van Gelder Studio. Joined by Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook, Gene Taylor, and Roy Brooks, the session marked a key transition for his quintet. This album was released a year before his iconic hit 'Song for My Father,' which was indeed a tribute to his Cape Verdean father. This reissue for the Blue Note Classic series has been remastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes so it offers an all-analogue experience and delivers superb sound quality that honours Silver's legacy.

Review: Recorded during the same intense August 1960 sessions that produced another iconic album, this release showcases the brilliance of a hard-bop quintet, combining fiery improvisation with introspective ballads. The album opens with a standard tune that became a regular feature in the group's live sets, setting the stage for a collection of original compositions. Lee Morgan's 'Johnny Blue' stands out with its infectious blues line, while Wayne Shorter's compositionsiparticularly 'Sleeping Dancer Sleep On'ireveal his growing mastery of melody and complex chord changes. The track is a highlight, with lush, gospel-funky piano and a slow, stunning waltz rhythm. Shorter's 'Noise in the Attic' is a powerful drum showcase, allowing for blistering solos from the horns but placing special emphasis on the piano work. 'Giants', another Shorter composition, closes the album with a hard-bop anthem that keeps the energy high and steady throughout. While Blakey typically dominates with his high-energy drumming, here he takes a more restrained role, allowing the melodies to breathe. The synergy of the quintet is palpable, with Bobby Timmons' percussive piano providing a dynamic counterpoint to the horn lines.

Review: Wayne Shorter's Juju, released in 1966, remains a quintessential work of modern jazz that now gets reissued on CD via Universal Japan. The groundbreaking work showcases Shorter's exceptional compositional prowess and innovative approach to jazz with a stellar lineup including pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Cecil McBee, drummer Elvin Jones, and legendary saxophonist Shorter himself. It's packed with a seamless blend of intricate melodies and dynamic rhythms and tracks like 'House of Jade' and 'Yes or No' highlight Shorter's masterful use of modal jazz to create a soundscape that's both complex and deeply engaging. The album's blend of subtle harmonies and powerful improvisations solidifies its status as a timeless classic.

Review: Cliff Craft is a standout gem in Blue Note's 1500 series and one of the rarest treasures. This superb album features Clifford Jordan on tenor sax, alongside Art Farmer (trumpet), Sonny Clark (piano), George Tucker (bass), and Louis Hayes (drums). It's a smooth, soulful journey that captivates from the first note. The album opens with Jordan's composition 'Laconia,' setting the tone with a relaxing, immersive sound. Jordan's craftsmanship shines throughout, especially on 'Soul-Lo Blues,' a bluesy, enjoyable tune that highlights his exceptional talent. The title track, Cliff Craft, is a fast-tempo, hard-bop piece that showcases Jordan's rich tenor sound and the superb rhythm section. Side-2 kicks off with 'Confirmation,' a medium-tempo Bird tune that features laid-back solos from Jordan and Farmer. Clark's smooth, flowing solo adds to the track's charm. 'Sophisticated Lady,' a beautiful ballad by Duke Ellington, stands out as a favorite slow tune. The album concludes with the driving energy of Parker and Gillespie's 'Anthropology,' leaving you wanting more. Cliff Craft is one of the finest Blue Note records ever made.

Review: Thad Jones' The Magnificent Thad Jones is a stunning album that beautifully showcases the beauty of hard bop. Released in 1956, it reflects the era's evolving jazz landscape, influenced by modern jazz pioneers like Horace Silver and Miles Davis. The album's tracks, including original compositions like 'Billy-Boo' and 'Thedia,' exude a relaxed yet lively vibe, typical of hard bop. Jones' trumpet work shines throughout, displaying a remarkable blend of relaxation and intensity in his solos. The ensemble's chemistry, especially between Detroit-raised musicians like pianist Barry Harris and Jones, is palpable, supported by the solid foundation laid by Percy Heath and Max Roach. Rudy Van Gelder's recording in Hackensack, New Jersey, harnasses the warmth and depth of Jones' trumpet sound, adding to the album's allure. The Magnificent Thad Jones is a timeless gem that continues to enchant jazz enthusiasts with its impeccable execution and rich musicality.

Review: Blue Note first delivered Horace Silver's Silver Serenade in 1964, adding yet once more to their precious collection of sonorous soul jazz metals. With Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor saxophone, Gene Taylor on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums, the natural scarcity of this serenade is a cultivated one, not spooned; Silver's naturalistic trumpet sounds carpal and easy, dancing brightly against clear, impeccably recorded contrapuntal movements by Brooks and Taylor.

Review: Hot on the heels of Blue Note's 2024 lineup announcement of their esteemed Tone Poet series - which reissues classic jazz albums for a contemporary audience hungry for audiophile quality editions - comes this eagerly-awaited new version of Anthony Williams' Life Time. A five-piece north star of free jazz and debut record by the expansive drummer, the album held a crucial repute throughout Williams' career as the inspirational namesake of his later band with John McLaughlin, the Tony Williams Lifetime Band. This one, however, pre-empts this movement and instead hears contributions from such greats as Richard Davis, Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter, riding high on the wave of divine-genius-by-proxy after already having performed with Miles Davis at the age of 18. Blast back to 1964 with this ideal free jazz intro.

I Love The Girl
Review: Originally released in 1974 and now reissued on vinyl, this album transformed the legendary Byrd's career direction. After years as a hard bop heavyweight and collaborator with the likes of Art Blakey, Coltrane and Herbie Hancock, Byrd found commercial and creative renewal through his partnership with producers Larry and Fonce Mizell. The third album in their five-record run on Blue Note, this pushed their progressive sound to deeper, darker territory, riding a funkier, more introspective current than his previous albums. The title track remains a defining work, its hypnotic groove and haunting optimism making it a favorite of future hip-hop artists like J Dilla and A Tribe Called Quest. Byrd's trumpet glides with elegant restraint, weaving through Chuck Rainey's basslines and Gary Bartz's saxophone work. Mizell's signature synthesiser textures add a lush and cosmic layer. Tracks like 'Think Twice' and 'Design A Nation' are grounded in sophisticated funk minimalism, blending subtle vocal refrains with intricate instrumentation. The gentler moments like 'Rock and Roll Again' and 'I Love The Girl', explore a softer, more soulful style without losing their sense of forward motion. Though often dismissed at the time by jazz traditionalists, 'Stepping Into Tomorrow' is now rightly seen as a cornerstone of 70s fusion and rare groove.

Review: Jackie McLean's Let Freedom Ring (1962) marks a pivotal moment in his career, where he boldly steps into uncharted territory, blending hard bop with avant-garde elements. The album, recorded at Van Gelder Studio, features McLean on alto sax, supported by Walter Davis Jr. on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The track 'Omega' stands out for its innovative approach, blending syncopated bass and piano rhythms with sharp, high-register saxophone lines. The song shifts effortlessly between tempos, showcasing the tight interplay between McLean and his band, particularly Higgins' relentless drumming and Davis' rhythmic accents. While 'Melody for Melonae' often receives attention for its emotive power, 'Omega' exemplifies McLean's forward-thinking vision, offering a spacious and harmonically rich canvas that predates many later "modern" jazz experiments. The album's overarching theme of "freedom" resonates on multiple levelsimusical, expressive, and perhaps even socialireflecting McLean's journey beyond traditional hard bop into a more liberated, dissonant sound. McLean's collaboration with Blue Note during this period produced a series of groundbreaking records, with Let Freedom Ring standing as a testament to his willingness to challenge conventions while staying rooted in the vibrant energy of jazz.

Review: Born in New York and raised in San Francisco, Eddie Henderson came up in rarefied company, his parents having been friends with Miles Davis; nothing felt accidental about the fact that he would go on to study at the San Francisco Conservatory, even though he was able to juggle this with a life outside of music too, near concurrently earning medical degree from Howard. But it was in Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band that his singular path through jazz really gun-started: by '76, Henderson had emerged as a sharp jazz-funk infused voice, cutting Heritage, his is second album as leader for Blue Note, with producer Skip Drinkwater and a band stacked with heavy improvisers. As heard better than ever on this signature Blue Note via Kevin Gray remaster, the driven stutters of 'Acuphuncture' and the murky slakes of 'Dark Shadow' sure do lock in a grand sense of cosmic unease.

Review: Kenny Dorham and Jackie McLean's Inta Somethin' is a vibrant snapshot of their performance at San Francisco's Jazz Workshop in late 1961. Jackie Mac's prowess shines brightly as he delivers a compelling rendition of 'Una Mas' a year prior to its Blue Note release. Backed by Leroy Vinnegar, Walter Bishop and Art Taylor, the ensemble crafts a dynamic and exhilarating atmosphere as McLean's virtuosity is on full display, captivating listeners with his electrifying playing style. Inta Somethin' is proof of the skills of these jazz giants and is a great window into their live repertoire and sense of musical innovation.

Review: Pianist and composer Aaron Parks made his first Blue Note appearance as a member of Terence Blanchard's band; an outfit akin to The Jazz Messengers in its cultivation of future jazz greats. After appearing on the trumpeter's albums Bounce, Flow, and A Tale of God's Will through the early 2000s, Parks made his own Blue Note debut in 2008 with Invisible Cinema, a striking album that has only grown in its influence across the modern jazz landscape since its release. The band - a quartet featuring the pianist with Mike Moreno on guitar, Matt Penman on bass, and Eric Harland on drums - travelled across new sonic and rhythmic frontiers on this set of Parks' evocative original compositions which were imbued with a cinematic drama and drew inspiration from the likes of Wayne Shorter, Radiohead, Bjork, Meshell Ndegeocello, and more. This first-time vinyl release includes two bonus tracks previously only available in Japan.

Review: Since bagging the 2014 Mercury Music Prize for sophomore set V.20, GoGo Penguin has become one of the most talked-about outfits around. The self-confessed "very modern piano trio" has succeeded largely due to their far-sighted ability to fuse more traditional jazz and classical music sounds with a surprisingly wide palette of influences, most notably dancefloor-focused 21st century electronic music. On A Humdrum Star, their fourth full length, the Manchester threesome has decided to take a "freer" and more "liberated" approach. The resultant music is every bit as exciting, entertaining and beguiling as you'd expect, with the full-throttle, high-octane dancefloor jazz of "Raven", atmospheric and undulating "Bardo" and gently jazz-funk influenced brilliance of closer "Window" amongst the highlights.

Review: Meshell Ndegeocello's upcoming album, No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin, is a profound tribute to the iconic author on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Following her Grammy-winning debut on Blue Note Records, Ndegeocello co-produced this album with guitarist Chris Bruce, enlisting a talented ensemble including vocalist Justin Hicks, saxophonist Josh Johnson and others. The album's first singles, 'Travel' and 'Raise the Roof,"' offer a glimpse into its powerful blend of music and spoken word. With contributions from poet Staceyann Chin and others, Ndegeocello's work transcends mere tribute, offering a transformative experience that is part music, part sermon, part celebration, and part call to action. No More Wate promises to be a genre-defying, spiritually enriching journey that honors Baldwin's legacy while adding a unique musical perspective. This album is poised to be a standout in Ndegeocello's already illustrious career.

Review: Harking yet another Tone Poet 2024 edition to come, comes this new forthcoming reissue from the esteemed master drummer Elvin Jones: Poly-Currents. After his six years with the seminal John Coltrane Quartet, Jones signed with Blue Note in 1968 and began building his own career as a bandleader. His first two albums for the label were spare trio outings - Puttin' It Together and The Ultimate - both featuring saxophonist Joe Farrell and bassist Jimmy Garrison. For 1969's unfettered post-bop exploration Poly-Currents, Jones expanded his ensemble with additional woodwinds and percussion while still maintaining spacious realms for the musicians to delve into on modal band member originals including 'Agenda,' 'Agappe Love,' 'Mr. Jones,' and 'Whew'. Jones is joined throughout by a cast that includes Farrell on tenor saxophone, English horn and flutes, George Coleman on tenor saxophone, Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone, Fred Tompkins on flute, Wilbur Little on bass and Cuban conguero Candido Camero.

Review: One of the finest line-ups of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers came together when saxophonist Wayne Shorter joined trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Bobby Timmons and bassist Jymie Merritt, as featured on this now newly reissued 1960 album A Night In Tunisia. The album kicks off with a blazing rendition of Dizzy Gillespie's iconic piece - which lends its name to the LP - while the rest of the set highlights original compositions from the new band members. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is a stereo, all-analogue release mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, so sounds superb.

Review: Following the runaway success of 1964's The Sidewinder, Alfred Lion continued to record Lee Morgan in pursuit of another boogaloo hit. While subsequent albums like 1965's The Rumproller, The Gigolo, and Cornbread didn't match the same commercial heights, they showcased Morgan's musical prowess. Recorded over two summer dates, The Gigolo features Morgan leading a quintet with Wayne Shorter, Harold Mabern, Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins. This set of swaggering hard bop includes Morgan's originals like the groovy Yes I Can, No You Can't, up-tempo gems such as 'Speedball,' and the stirring 11-minute title track. The album closes with a lush arrangement of 'You Go To My Head,' adding a sensual sway to the collection. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition presents the album in stereo, all-analogue, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal, preserving Morgan's dynamic performances and the quintet's vibrant interplay for contemporary listeners and ardent vinyl enthusiasts.

Review: Forces of Nature: Live at Slugs' is a thrilling, never-before-released live recording of jazz giants McCoy Tyner and Joe Henderson, captured at Slugs' Saloon in 1966. Joining them are bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Jack DeJohnette, forming a powerhouse quartet. The performance, unearthed from DeJohnette's personal archives after nearly six decades, showcases the intense musical chemistry between Tyner and Henderson, who were central figures in the 1960s jazz scene. The recording, originally engineered by Orville O'Brien, brings the energy and creativity of this 1966 set to life. With expert mastering by Matthew Lutthans, the sound is crisp and vibrant, transporting listeners back to the legendary Slugs' Saloon. Forces of Nature is a amazing look into an era of jazz brilliance.

Review: McCoy Tyner looked towards Africa on his stunning 1970 album Extensions, a far-reaching exploration of Black identity that marked the masterful pianist's fifth recording for Blue Note Records. After leaving John Coltrane's band, Tyner had moved from Impulse to Blue Note and made his enduring post-bop classic The Real McCoy in 1967. In the following years Tyner steadily expanded his musical scope: writing for a 9-piece ensemble on Tender Moments; exploring the textures of a piano-vibes led quartet with Bobby Hutcherson on Time for Tyner; and pushing at the boundaries of mainstream jazz on Expansions. Extensions is perhaps most notable for being the only recorded collaboration between Tyner and Alice Coltrane who plays harp on three of the album's four pieces (all composed by Tyner) along with Gary Bartz on alto saxophone, Wayne Shorter on soprano and tenor saxophone, Ron Carter on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums.

Review: Donald Byrd's Royal Flush, released in 1961 on Blue Note, exemplifies his mastery of hard bop, featuring a stellar lineup that includes a young Herbie Hancock on piano, Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. This album marks Hancock's recording debut, showcasing his burgeoning talent as he steps into the shoes of Duke Pearson. The combination of Byrd's trumpet and Adams' baritone sax creates a unique, textured harmony that is both bold and refined. Tracks like 'Hush' and 'Shangri-La' highlight the band's cohesive interplay, with solos that are both distinct and beautifully integrated into the compositions. 'Requiem,' a standout piece penned by Hancock, offers a mid-tempo, gospel-tinged piano blues that allows Hancock to explore melodic space, supported by Byrd and Adams' plaintive lines and Warren's resonant bowed bass solo. What sets Royal Flush apart is Byrd's understated leadership, allowing each musician to shine while maintaining a unified sound. The result is an album rich in melody, brimming with the synergy of seasoned players and a young, innovative pianist on the rise.

Review: Duke Pearson's 1964 gem Wahoo! is a shining showcase of his skills as a pianist, composer, and bandleader. Writing for a sextet, Pearson brought together an exceptional lineup featuring Donald Byrd on trumpet, James Spaulding on alto sax, Joe Henderson on tenor, Bob Cranshaw on bass and Mickey Roker on drums. The result is a set of evocative originals, like the tender 'Amanda', the mysterious 'Bedouin', and the hard-hitting 'ESP (Extrasensory Perception)'. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition does justice to Pearson's work, offering an all-analog, stereo mix mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes. Pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal, it's got everything an audiophile could hope for. Whether it's the energetic swing of 'Fly Little Bird Fly' or the deeper hues of 'Farewell Machelle', every track radiates Pearson's unmistakable touch, balancing sophistication with soul.

Review: Bashed out in no time at all, Andrew Hill's Andrew!!! drew on an astonishing creative upsurge enjoyed by many a musician in the early 1960s, which proved fortuitous for the pianist's storied early-career Blue Note run. Captured in 1964 with a distinctive quintet including John Gilmore, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis, and Joe Chambers, this de facto debut showcases Hill's singular compositional voice across six dense, exploratory originals like 'The Griots' and 'Black Monday'; while his earlier Point Of Departure tends to attract the spotlight, Andrew!!! colours between the lines in a different shade. But like the former, it no less now benefits from BN's Joe Harley's audiophiliac oversight, preserving the subtle textures and telepathic interplay that define Hill's gauche-adroit playing.

It came on Blue Note in 1975 and is full of all killer no filler gold. It also saw her, along with producers the Mizell Brothers aka Larry and Fonce, come up with a fresh new largely instrumental funk sound. Weaving in everything from world music to soul-jazz to club music to pop, it's a widescreen sound that is packed with uplifting flute from Humphrey and lush production that reveals something new with each listen.

Louisiana tenor saxophonist Don Wilkerson made his debut on the label in 1962 with Preach Brother!, which featured Grant Green on guitar, Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The foursome lend fearsome talent to Wilkerson's vision, which is a playful exercise in soul-jazz homing in on various vibe studies - loneliness filtered through the shake of a tambourine, city bustle conveyed via tss-tssing rides and swing.
