Unbroken Dub - "No Way"

Review: Tamed Monsters EP is an inaugural release of the new record label Pandora. New imprint will focus on ambient sounds, music for home-listening and unique artwork. The VA includes works from german producer Benedikt Frey, russian producers Shine Grooves, Unbroken Dub, and an ambient group Kurvenschreiber. Each artist offers a different sound, which lets the music evolve like a story and makes a nice combination of dreamy ambience and mesmerizing repetitive beats.

Junkies (1:34)
2 Good 4 Me (2:22)
Almost Man (3:22)
Review: U makes his 7" debut for Where To Now, and offers a great example of why the MPC machine should never be limited to MPC-sounding beats. It's a versatile instrument in the right hands, and there's no question in our minds that the producer in question here has the right hands. Offering three snapshots of a mind evidently packed with far-reaching, varied ideas, the musicality is surprising considering the process and the concepts at play utterly breathtaking.

From '2 Good 4 Me''s manipulated-yet-deep drum patterns, reversing in and out in a playful way while being cast in the dim light of a rainy, moody overhead arrangement, to the stepping, shuffle-inducing 'Almost Man', and its jazz-infused, candlelit vocal sections, this is quite possibly the most sophisticated electronic music you'll hear in some time.

NY Graffiti - "UN" (10:17)
UCC Harlo - "Let's See" (NY Graffiti remix) (4:53)
Review: For the second release on New York City's Peace Anthem Records, Annie Garlid
Aka UCC Harlo - a viola player and singer from Connecticut, living in Berlin - joins NY Graffiti for what the label so eloquently described itself as 'Ketamine-paced grooves, baroque miniatures, hazy-humid sonics, and dub inflections'. On the A side, you've got UCC Harlo serving up the minimal atmospherics of 'Let's See' awash in shimmering FM synth aesthetics, followed over on the flip by the evocative breaks of 'UN' by NY Graffiti, not to mention each of them delivering a remix of the other's track.

Steamed Up Window (Skookum Reminiscence) (4:06)
Review: Mystery production unit UD returns to Kimochi, one of the more overlooked imprints of the last few years, with four new cuts and a rather fine selection of remixers to boot! The mood is pensive and the sounds are atmospheric throughout, where tracks like "Lollipop Robot" or "Adapter" stand somewhere between ambient and electro-acoustic. The remixes give the tracks slightly more dancefloor weight, and both Area Green Grass and label regular Skookum contribute with a set of pretty killer reinterpretations a-la outsider house, but the silent killer is most certainly SW's remix of "Pankow". The SUED records co-owner fixes up a wonderfully bizarre concoction of sounds and shapes, moulding them into a dubby, sparse and cinematic twister. Another fine slice of Kimochi, beautiful artwork and all.

NFL CC DUB (Mix Mup 12" bonus version) (6:37)
Dewy (SW version) (7:03)
Review: The Kimochi label has been steadily releasing quality output over the last four years and they've been responsible for introducing us to a pool of new talent from the ambient corners. This latest beautifully presented 12" comes in their usual house style and comes from UD, an unknown artist who has already released one EP for the label last year. "Muy Casera" starts things off with colourful minimalism thanks to its glitchy sonics, while "Meticulous" breaks the groove and takes the beeps to an irregular tempo. "After The Cremation" is looser and more heavily focussed on cinematic pads, whereas "Pankow" takes subtle bursts of noise and places them above grey-scaled low frequencies. There's some special appearances on the B-side in the form of two remixes by Leipzig's Mix Mup and Sued's SW: the former gives his own version of "NFL CC DUB", a slow and chuggy beat burning below mild pads, whereas the latter interpretation of "Dewy" contains that classic SUED sound, a bag of rickety percussion and rich soundscapes. Don't miss it, gone before you know it.

Change Time
Review: Finnish electronic deviant, Ukkonen, steps up to the incorrigible Uncharted Audio with a tight little 10" after his last release on No Pain In Pop. Two cuts per side of the plate, with "First Lunation" and "Tonal Syzygy" dragging a slow kick drum along vast, airy soundscapes and creating a gorgeous atmosphere of sonic freedom. Over on the flip, "Agocic Helia" is the track most associable to a dancefloor thanks to its faster tempo and choppy melodies, whereas "Change Time" is even brighter, more sporadic and filled with tasty modular bleeps and a loose burst of kicks. Lovely stuff from both the artist and the label!

Lumous
Aikomus
Review: It's time for another ambitious soiree with the No Pain In Pop crowd, this time reaching for an artist with plentiful ties to the label already. Ukkonen has a grounding in the romantic nature of original Detroit techno, as is evident as "Luomus" takes hold like a golden-era Carl Craig production, all haunting strings and rousing arpeggios with barely a beat in sight. The long-form piece evolves naturally without ever feeling laborious, moving into various suites that come on like a fine collection of short stories. "Aikomus" meanwhile takes a more linear tack, still stretched over twelve minutes but with a consistent thread that operates in the more mellow end of the techno spectrum, making for some seriously arresting music in the process.

Review: The low-key but high-quality City-2 St Giga label is back with another sublime electronic trip here after previous artists like Anthony Naples and Burago have all made their own mark. Ultrafrog is next up with four tracks of deeply immersive ambient. 'Charisma' is up first with deeply implicit rhythms and grainy pads smeared in all directions. 'Fourty Four' then locks you in a suspense of diffuse synth magic before 'Lenexa' brings a little more unease and turbulence with smeared chords, distant clatter and urban paranoia. 'Albino' closes down with another unsettling ambient sound world.

Review: My Own Mirror To Stay is a brand new and first-ever compilation from the Sure Thing label. It finds them carefully curating six new artists and welcome them to the family, each with their own personal reflections of the dance floor. Lukas Urban kicks off with supple, seductive and stripped back techno while Soreab layers up prickly percussive layers and Sanguine sinks you into a dream state with his lush ambient pads and skeletal rhythms. The flip side features three more elegantly designed and meticulous bits of techno sound sculpture. The always exceptional Neel has mastered this one too.

Review: Originally conceived in 2019 during a tour with industrial hardcore purveyors Uniform, Japanese psychedelic noise-rock juggernauts Boris would invite their co-conspirators on stage to reimagine the trio's classic "Akuma no Uta" as part of their encore, with the resulting chemistry inspiring both acts to begin crafting a fully collaborative album. Many years of exchanging ideas from one home studio base to another has finally bore fruit in the form of the hideous yet glorious Bright New Disease. Combining almost every nuance of each group's genre-less machinations, the project swells and extends in every sonic direction from harsh walls of screeching noise to retrofitted Japanese D-beat hardcore, with time in between for aquatic, shoegazing serenity and mechanized industrial venom.

Review: Celebrating its 30th anniversary this Record Store Day, 'Original Soundtracks 1' is a bold, imaginative collaboration between British ambient pioneer Brian Eno and Irish band U2 under the moniker Passengers. Blurring the line between ambient experimentation and cinematic storytelling, the album features 15 tracks that were all conceived as soundtracks for fictional films. Highlights include the haunting 'Miss Sarajevo' with Luciano Pavarotti and contributions from Howie B and Holi and this remastered anniversary edition comes on recycled black vinyl. An adventurous 1995 release that stands up now as an atmospheric, genre-blurring work and a rare and inspired detour in U2's discography.

Review: The West Mineral imprint is shaping up to be one of the hottest prospects in experimental music this year, with the label dropping three killer records to crown their debut. The latest comes from Pontiac Streator and Ulla Straus, two young artists who have begun to collaborate magnificently, delving into the deeper, more intricate side of percussion, bass, and improvisation. Chat is truly killer throughout, weaving away amid sporadic drums and a washed out bass, often sounding much like the constructions of a dub tune, and there are four parts to it. Part 1 rolls its drums out hither and dither, alongside a flurry of dread bass, whereas Part 2 is much more freeform in aesthetic, its drums bouncing with the help of delay and echo. "Chat Three" teases the crowds with a subtle infusion of something reminiscent of techno, and "Chat 4" ties things off with a cinematic drum roll that confirms just how serious this duo is. Recommended.

Review: Throughout is a new and exciting label out of Kyoto that impresses once more here with a brilliantly cool new collaboration between Jungle Brothers' Sensational and the producer Unbuilt. The former has laid down endless amounts of interesting sounds over the years and Poiesis now joins those hallowed ranks. It is aptly described as "a paranoid party-starter cast against a menacing greyscale backdrop of impressive dystopian grandeur." The production from Sensational is on point and a mix of basted and dubbed out while the bars remind of early underground rap greats - like Def Jux rewired through a more contemporary sound.

Eternal Return
Review: Well, you know it's a special day when a new Southern Lord record lands on your lap! The God...the Don...Stephen O'Malley's co-run label with Greg Anderson has been continuously pushing the boundaries of electronic music since its inception over a decade ago and it most certainly isn't showing any signs of stopping. For this latest collaborative effort, the two founders appear under their Sunn O moniker together with Norway's Ulver trio for three slices of total sonic warping. "Let There Be Light" reminds us of Miles Davis' more daring concoctions on "Bitches Brew", while "Western Horn" is a militant drone excursion filled with gloomy field recordings and wailing, syncopated instruments. "Eternal Return" is on a more ethnic tip, bringing together elements of ancient rituals wrapped in a devastating cloak of electronic doom. You can't overlook this, really...

Review: Uboa's Impossible Light marks a significant shift from the ambitious darkness of previous work. Xandra Metcalfe's latest release merges otherworldly sounds with raw human emotion, creating a captivating blend of intense darkness and poignant beauty. Throughout Impossible Light, Uboa explores a heightened sense of urgency and directness, particularly in addressing themes of trans experiences and societal marginalisation. Tracks like 'Endocrine Disruptor' contrast serene melodies with explosive beats, while 'The Puzzle' immerses listeners in heavy synths and impactful percussion. 'Gordian Worm' transitions from harsh noise to a more structured electro-industrial sound and 'Pattern Screamers' delivers a powerful vocal performance amid distorted, mechanical noise. The seamless flow between 'Jawline' and 'Weaponised Dysphoria', alongside the emotional depth of 'Sleep Hygiene', underscores Uboa's skillful talent at balancing it all.

Review: Uboa's Impossible Light represents a profound evolution from the dark, ambitious sound of The Origin of My Depression. Xandra Metcalfe's latest work melds inhuman textures with visceral human emotions, creating a unique blend of dark intensity and raw beauty. The album opens with 'Phthalates', a track that combines haunting vocal samples with jittery percussion, setting a controlled yet expansive tone. 'Endocrine Disruptor' features a striking contrast of serene arpeggios and explosive beats, highlighting Uboa's ability to juxtapose beauty with darkness. Lyrically, the album reflects a heightened urgency, addressing themes of trans experiences and societal othering with a stark, direct approach. 'The Puzzle' delves into oppressive, heavy synths and percussive blasts, while 'Gordian Worm' evolves from harsh noise to a more structured electro-industrial sound. Tracks like 'Pattern Screamers' are dynamic with a strong vocal performance amid corrupted, mechanical noise. 'Jawline' and 'Weaponised Dysphoria' flow seamlessly, with 'Jawline' transitioning from choral elements to harsh electronics, and 'Weaponised Dysphoria' reversing this progression. 'Sleep Hygiene' contrasts intense noise with reflective breaks, portraying the struggle with illness and recovery. Overall, Uboa's capacity for blending darkness with hope, making it a poignant and essential listen. This version comes on coloured vinyl.
