I Need You Girl

I Need You Girl
If Only I Could Prove To You
Review: Fryers presents 'I Need You Girl' from The 3 Pieces. In the early 1970s, Detroit-born jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd moved away from his previous hard-bop jazz base and began to experiment with jazz fusion, jazz-funk, soul-jazz, and rhythm and blues. Teaming up with the Mizell Brothers, they produced 'Black Byrd', which was enormously successful and became Blue Note Records' highest-ever selling album. The Mizell Brothers followed up their success with more albums for Byrd: 'Places and Spaces', 'Steppin' Into Tomorrow' and 'Street Lady' were also big sellers, and have subsequently provided a rich source of samples for acid jazz artists such as Us3. Another Donald Byrd production was for The 3 Pieces, a vocal trio signed to Fantasy Records. Until now the their music has been confined to their 1975 album 'Vibes of Truth', so it's about time that someone took the two strongest tracks from their masterpiece and cut them onto a 45. Not only that but Fryers got hold of the master tapes and did a special transfer just for the 45. So now you have two of the most sublime '70s soul dancers on 7", sounding better than ever: rich soulful strings, crispy sharp drums and deep ranging bass. 1975 never sounded so good.

Riff To The Rhodes
B Line
Review: "Set U Free" is a nice nu soul/r&b female stepper, with Bobbi's great vocals and instant DJ appeal. "Rockin You Eternally" is an epic modern, nu soul smash that's gonna cause the quiet storm, with exclusive appearances from Roy Ayers who takes the tune to new levels with his trademark vital vibes and Woody Cunningham singing super soul vocals. "Riff To The Rhodes" is a fat soul instrumental, with catchy horns and electric piano, a pure dancefloor friendly rare groover. "B-line" spills some funky space soul for the feet and the head. Hypnotic cosmic deep soulfulness for all you rekkid lovers out there.

Can't Hide Love (Al's extended re-edit)
Review: On the A side you'll find the hard to find live vocal version of "Can't Hide Love", re-edited and re-EQ'd by the A&R crew and extended for maximum listening and dancefloor pleasure. A non stop groove! On the B side, there's a longer version of the classic Sly Stone "Family Affair" and a re-cut of "Right Place Wrong Time" by Dr. John. Enjoy the funk and the versions of these fantastic groovy tunes. Extended pleasure and fatter sounds!

Review: Re-edits galore with a special "version excursion" for the 3rd A & R release Each side contains two different versions of the same classic funk tune. Classic funk "Make Me Believe In U" rearranged for listening and dancing pleasure, and you can even mix it with other records as it is re-timed! Side B has edits of the classic "Night People" a soul funk boogie shuffler! These are lengthened versions with different arrangements and a re-eqed for a fatter sound.

Rockit Music (Ripp's Cover mix)
California Style (Al's extended re-edit)
Rockit Music (acappella tools mix)
Review: Number 5 in the series of great re-edited and reworked versions of classics from the past. Here you get two massive club tunes that will destroy any dancefloor. The A-side holds an afro disco re-edit of the end groove of "California Style" Al's edit is totally different from the original track. Extended for maximum dancefloor pleasure. The B-side is a Ripp complete rework of "Body & Soul" re-timed and re-programmed with a soft kick drum. Originally sampled by UR for "Night Of The Jaguar" this is a killer dancefloor tune for groovy or moody clubs! Also check the Rockit Music cover mix - using the drums from Earth People "Dance" with pads from Bobby Konders "The Poem" and a snippet from Q-Tip to keep the vibe flowing. Strictly for the old school heads!

Review: 2 Rare West Indian funk tunes, Side A is a version of Gwen McCrae's soul and funk classic "90% Of Me Is You" from Trinidad's finest steelpan band Amral's Trinidad Cavaliers, this tune is seriously rare, originally only pressed in small quantities and sold around the Caribbean. Vetson Androy - "Mavandeza" (3:55)
Joajoby - "Tarantasy Maitso" (3:30)
Review: You can rely on the Sofrito label to unearth the most daring of dance music from the most obscure corners of the earth. This latest instalment lands on Madagascar's shores, a stunning landscape with relatively little known about its music from the typical Westerner; as usual, though, we are pleasantly surprised by what we discover on this totally killer two-tracker. The sound is called Salegy, a style originating from the island's North-Western quarters, and that evokes fast 6/8 rhythms accompanied by steely percussion folds and tribalistic chanting: "Mavandeza" is a deep and mystical song performed by the Vetson Androy outfit, who were famous proponents of the sound at the height of its popularity in 1978. The B-side is from tenders later, and Joajoby's "Tarantasy Maitso" is another glorious slice of vocal-led percussion in the island's loose and spiritual style. Unmissable.

The Apples - "Attention!"
The Quartertones - "Caffeine" (DJ Format's Getaway version)
Review: In anticipation of the forthcoming follow up to the hugely popular "Stay On The Groove" compilation, Freestyle drop another couple of sublime modern funk nuggets on 45. Beaming in directly from Israel, The Apples give us the insanely catchy "Attention!" - lifted from their debut album of the same name, this is an essential slice of dancefloor funk. Updating the classic funk sound, The Apples drop heavy instrumentation over a looped up break, alongside some fresh cuts and scratches. Rumoured to be a live experience not to miss, we hope to be able to bring you more from this energetic set. Over on the flip, Canada's finest The Quartertones drop another hefty chunk of funk with the highly charged "Caffeine". Stepping up on remix duties is the UK's very own DJ Format who applies the brakes and beefs up the beats with his trademark funk sound. Sounding like the theme to the worlds funkiest car chase, it's hard to imagine this not killing it on the dancefloor!

Wings Of Love
Review: Wow. Fortuna have really thrown a curve ball. There is very little out other on Arbanel Tsvia but the music speaks for itself. Both cuts are furtive fusions of East meets West as we shake away to dramatic Salim-Sulaiman style cascading melodies before being thrown in Charlie Parkier style jazz madness and big swing band action the size of 10 Glen Millers. A unique listen, there's not one dull moment throughout.

Everybody Move
Review: "Everybody Move" is Mischief Brew's seventh release. Sticking to their formula of singling out tracks not just for their individual qualities, such as a prominent break, riff or vocal, but also on the value and recognition they think the track deserves. "Everybody Move" is taken from the Ghanaian funk and soul afro-beat group The Ashanti’s. "Everybody Move" is a bright, sunny dance track, characterized by a deep extended groove, driven by electric guitars, keyboards, bass, drums, hand percussion and punctuated with crisp horn blasts.

Rock Your Roll
Review: Following the well-received reissued albums Love Fantasy, Let's Do It, Fever and, more recently, Africa, Centre Of The World, Polydor are reissuing this exceptional 12" that was only ever pressed for DJ promotion in 1980. Featuring two of Ayers most outstanding cuts, it sings with timeless soul and funk. For the rare-groove aficionados it's all about "Love Will Bring Us Back Together" while those looking for more of an upbeat, unrelenting boogie-fusion it's all about "Rock Your Roll". Both are seminal.

Stay The Night (Mr Carmack remix) (3:55)
Review: Adam Mori aka B.Bravo is back like a thick gush of smoke filling up the dance floor, and the Brownswood-Bleep associate is in no mood to wait till the warm up set is done. These two new smokers for the Bastard Jazz imprint are pure class, every bit as sexy and seductive as we've come to expect from the producer, starting with the sultry claps and bass of the excellent "Im For Real", a sun-scorched killer of a tune, fit for riding shotgun and turing the rooftop down. On the flipside, Mr Carmack detunes "Stay The Night" down to a funky, mid-tempo level, and it's just about the grooviest of boogie tracks that we've heard in a while. Think Daft Punk meets Willie Hutch. Wonderful.

Review: Original pressings have been previously spotted passing hands for well over L1000: Big Apple Band's 1976 deep funk classic has been rarer than hen's teeth for most of its 41 year life. Its sought-after status accelerated by Keb Darge for last 15 or so years - that and the fact it's an out-and-out soul-stirring, honey-vocalled, low and slow funk burner - AOTN have finally unleashed it in it full length for all of us. And we should all be eternally grateful.

Afro-focussed "Expensive Sheeeeet" comes with more switches than a cockpit as we flick between lolloping bass groove, deep tenor soul, rifle percussion and serious sprinkles of sunset magic. Review: Foremost contemporary funk label Peoples Potential Unlimited have another golden 12" on their hands here thanks to the work of Barnikle Freee. He is the current designer for the label, someone who hoards software and makes expert glitch funk as well as being a multi-string bassist. As ever with this label, it is lo-fi, subtle sounds and frayed edges that define the EPs lovely aesthetic, with roughshod grooves, tumbling kicks and scatter perc all making you want to cut loose and boogie. Part dream-scape, part hazy late night session, part live set, it's all good.

Jody & John (2:54)
Review: Now this is what you call a hot damn funk record right here. The legendary Nathan Bartell released this absolute scorcher "Top Going Up Going Down" back in 1975 and is what you could call a good and proper digger's delight. You can trust German powerhouse Tramp (run by Tobias Kirmayer) to bring the revival as always, as these guys specialize in rare soul and funk reissues. Second offering "Jody & John" undeniably takes it cues from the godfather himself James Brown and his orchestra but wow: this one absolutely explosive tribute if we do say so ourselves. Hailing from Ashburn, Georgia, Bartell started out with Eddie & the Cascades in the '60s. In 1991 Bartell was hospitalised with a lung ailment and while recovering became born again and vowed never again to sing R&B music. He instead formed a Gospel group called Nathan Bartell & Reality and still performs in Southern Georgia.

That Little Thing You Do
Review: Jumping from his own Bombastic Jam label back to Jalapeno suggests Basement Freaks is set to release a new album. Exciting. Especially considering the raw power and interesting diversions this new material has taken. "Work It Out" is reminiscent of Nextmen with its grizzly distorted riff and lyrical impact. "A Blues Thang", meanwhile, lives up to its name with harmonica-swallowing splendour and "That Little Thing You Do" oozes 80s funk boogie power. And while "Gotta Make Me A Gun" might sound aggressive, trust us it's not... it's as soft and playful as Rick James and Bootsy having a cuddle and kiss with a Moog synth.

Get Into Your Life
Review: "Get Into Your Life", despite being a masterful piece of late 70's Soul, failed to hit and sank without a trace at the time. Since then it has been a big track in soul clubs in the US and UK. This track has all the right ingredients - pleading vocal, soaring strings and a bumping beat. The b-side is more of a mid-tempo affair, in the style of the best old 'ravers' tunes as spun on the soul scene. Both sides are ideal for today's soulful dancefloors.

The Weed
Review: "Hog-Gushin" is another typical BDM stomper with fast moving hi-hats, even faster drumwork and hard-riffing guitars and horns. This time, producer and musical director Daddy K also gets busy on the organ, which gives the whole tune a grandiose dance-floor busting feel. For those of you who already manage to keep their legwork in time with previous BDM up-tempo shaker Ratpack. The flipside track eases in with a cool jumping bassline and a steady bouncing drum groove, before guitar and horns give The Weed an almost JB-esque kind of sound approach. After the fast paced "Hog - Gushin" you now have the chance to sit back and relax to some slow-grooving funkiness. Besides the tight guitar playing of youngster Bobby Javis Jr., you're also about to experience a tight rhythm section with some very nice bluesy vocals by Mickey The Moocher on top.

These versions blow the originals out of the water! "Theme of Blackbyrds" is a dancefloor destroyer of the highest order - one that those lucky enough to have an original have been caning for years, and rightly so! Heavy drums, crisp horns and a heavy groove all make up one of the best Funk 45's never heard!
