Meditation (5:26)
Meditation (instrumental) (5:27)
Review: Dean Blunt and Arca are back to reign in 2016 with their Babyfather alias, a moody and spectral style of theirs that digs deep into the science of low hertz. The release comes on Kode-9's mythical Hyberdub label, and it's as fitting as one would think: experimental beat structures and odd sonics blend to form a forward-thinking dance sound. "Meditation" is a stuttering, quasi 4/4 groove powered by a grizzly level of bass, and an artillery of black comedy voices spewing from all angles. It's a true UK hybrid, and it is honestly one of our favourite things to come from the label in a while; check the instrumental for a further dosage of weighty percussion. Recommended.

Stolen Dog
Review: Repress alert! Wednesday: Hyperdub announce a new three track release from enigmatic producer Burial - his first solo work in four years. Thursday: Said records arrive on Juno doorstep. How's that for service (and secrecy)! The news came just a matter of days after the producer's collaboration with Radiohead front man Thom Yorke and Four Tet arrived on record shelves across the UK and promptly sold out amidst a frenzy of hype. There are three new tracks on offer here, namely "Street Halo", "NYC" and "Stolen Dog". First up "Street Halo" showcases the classic Burial sound; subterranean bass gurgles, trademark clicking beats and barely-there vocal snatches. A sweet childlike vocal pervades the sonic mist on "NYC" while "Stolen Dog" closes out with ethereal vocal harmonies buried deep beneath vinyl crackle. Stunning.

Ashtray Wasp
Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Given that his sound has now been referenced, copied and bastardised by countless imitators, is testament to Burial's enduring appeal that the announcement of a new EP on a Sunday in Febuary was enough to shake the online music press out of their collective stupors. As an EP it more than stands up to his previous work, and it may even be better than last year's Street Halo EP - where the brilliance of the title track left the EP quite top-heavy, there's no such complaints on Kindred. If UK garage was the touchpoint for his earlier releases, this EP sees Burial further developing a sound that has few obvious points of comparison, whether it's the savage, gnarled bassline of the title track, or the shambling house of "Loner", characterized by its hollowed out arpeggio and ambient crackle. But it's "Ashtray Wasp" that provides the most breathtaking moment, seeing the producer using the distinct musical language he's created and bringing confident melodic elements into play. Of course such descriptions seem trivial when trying to describe this EP - even for Burial it's far beyond what his peers and imitators could ever imagine making.

Come Down To Us
Review: After a decidedly silent 2013 Burial is back on Hyperdub with a new single that points to pastures new for the stealthy producer. "Rival Dealer" is sure to polarize opinion as it takes a positively unexpected route into hardcore breaks, static interference, all manner of oddball speech samples, diversions and switches in dynamics, and a willfully grainy production finish that borders on punk. Depending on where you choose to dive into the ten-minute track the experience could be very different; experiencing it in full is nothing short of a rollercoaster. "Hiders" too is full of surprises, more indebted to pop balladry than anything remotely garage related, and the emotive croon and swooning piano is only magnified by a Yazoo-esque drum stomp at the midway point. "Come Down To Us" is equally heartfelt, all slow release vocals and languid chords yet constantly fractured at the edges, with yet more surprising turns of bombast waiting in the wings over thirteen minutes.

Rough Sleeper
Review: *Burial Repress* The double header of Truant/Rough Sleeper is the second EP from Burial in 2012, and arrives with as little fanfare as the superb Kindred EP did early this year. Unlike that more dancefloor focused record however, this EP harks back to the producer's earlier sound. Of course, being two longform compositions clocking in at 12 and 14 minutes respectively, they're hardly conventional works; each utilises the same liberal use of spectral atmospheres, emotive vocal samples, hollow 2-step beats and nods to jungle as we've come to expect from the producer, but with complex structures that come across more like two sides of an old mixtape recorded from a pair of decrepit turntables. Of course being a mixtape from Burial, this is special stuff indeed - consider it an early Christmas present to yourself.

Claustro (5:44)
State Forest (7:53)
Review: While he's offered up the occasional remix, William "Burial" Bevan has been rather quiet of late. In fact, this two-tracker marks his first original material for almost two years. Lead cut "Claustro" is an unexpectedly up-tempo dancefloor affair - a sweet and sticky chunk of future-garage that sees Bevan wrap sugary female vocal snippets, spacey chords and bubbly analogue electronics around snappy two-step beats - drenched in vinyl crackle and tape hiss - and a rock solid bassline. It will raise a few eyebrows given his previous work but nevertheless sounds like a summer anthem in waiting. Bevan returns to familiar territory on flipside cut "State Forest", a ghostly, field recording-laden ambient excursion where pedal steel style motifs slowly rise above opaque electronics.

Southern Comfort
Broken Home
Nite Train
Review: Hyperdub return in majestic fashion, clearly relishing the extended play possibilities of their new 12" format. The title cut here is an immense underground tune, mercury bass styles, quicksilver minimal rimshots - a tempo redolent of a possessed drive out of the city. Weak hearts may find it just a little too dark - we're just simply blown away by the exhilaration this music provides, a whole new dimension of dub. 'Southern Comfort' again has an almost liquid feel, but wields an enhanced and brutal bass presence, the hi-hats are choppier, messier and this lends a disorientating feel to the delayed pyrotechnics taking place somewhere above and inside your head. 'Broken home' is perhaps closest to the half-speed mesmeria of 'Sign of the Dub' from the first 10", a delightful lick of dancehall vocal, more for melodic purposes than anything else, and a heavily muted trumpet sounding for all the world like miles. The most other-worldly tune ushers in a percussive shaker with chasm deep breakdowns 'Nite Train', certainly the track for the ladies, the beat is tougher than you ever expect - providing a great counterpoint to the female vocal and echoing mayhem of effects. Hyperdub - every release is an event in its own right.

Review: In response to overwhelming demand for a vinyl companion to Burial's triumphant debut CD, Hyperdub cap off an especially enjoyable summer with this new EP, which includes 3 of the album's most played tracks, "Distant Lights", "Gutted", and "Pirates" plus a new Kode 9 remix of "Distant Lights". Expect a mountain of reviews and floods of radio play right around town as soon as the test-presses emerge from the Hyperdub bunker. Landscapes (feat Simbad)
It's Serious (feat Karizma)
Review: The promise of Cooly G's releases for Hyperdub et al turns into maddening anticipation as the first taste of her forthcoming album sneaks out months ahead of the game! First up it's "Landscapes", co-produced with Simbad, and utterly devastating in its use of simple elements for maximum effect. A broken beat ticks steadily away under glossy, undulating streams of pads while Cooly herself enchants with her Neneh Cherry style vocal delivery. "It's Serious" on the flipside sees Cooly linking up with certified house legend Karizma for a more chunky, beat-driven offering that will slay floors in the same way that Altered Natives' "Rass Out" did some years back.

Up In My Head
Phat Si
Review: Cooly G has become a phenomenon in the last year among fans of dubstep and UK Funky partially thanks to her heavy DJ sets, a prolific Twitter account and a slew of excellent mixtapes. But this incredible double A-Side release via Hyperdub showcases the main reason Cooly G is the name on everyone's lips - her beats. "Up In My Head" starts with a dreamy arrangement of chords, fed through different phasing effects and with a sparse string lead just creeping into the melange of R&B-esque sounds. While there's a warped-pop feel to "Up In My Head", "Phat Si" (which debuted on Kode9's DJ Kicks mix recently) is straight-up fire. With snares sequenced into a full-on funky rattle and hats sounding like knives, she filters the beat up subtly until letting fly with a huge processed siren-effect which brings the beats in with full force. Frankly it's sick, and another essential release from Cooly and Hyperdub. Enjoy.

Gold (John Roberts remix)
Review: Getting John Roberts to remix Darkstar is not dissimilar to the 2009 Hyperdub stroke of genius that saw Detroit prodigy Kyle Hall rework "Aidys Girl's A Computer". Of course since then a lot has happened: Aiden Whalley and James Young morphed from a production team into a band, adding vocalist James Buttery along the way, and North, the fruits of their labour, was a fragile, delicate and beautiful album. Tracks like "Gold", which here gets a deserved single release, showcase an 80s synth pop sensibility, with Buttery's vocals bringing an otherwise unattainable level of heartbreaking fragility to the song. The remix from Berlin-based American producer Roberts - who just released a frankly stunning LP of his own on Dial - ups the tempo with looped claps, chopped vocals and a delicate piano driven melody. An essential 12".

Ganja
Review: Scratcha DVA delivers his debut 12" for Hyperdub with "Natty," taking dub step's funky phenomenon even further with two funky, yet tribal tunes.

This is a highly anticipated Hyperdub release. Having received plays from Kode 9 affiliates, Cooly G and Ikonika in addition to players like Oneman to Marcus Nasty and Jackmaster - expectations were high. The iconic label, perhaps sensing this, have even issued the record in a resplendent spot-gloss sleeve.

Known originally for his grime beats, DVA has been bubbling away just under the surface for a while now. It is his unique take on the funkier side of dub step that is getting him all the recognition now. Serving as an answer to all those who believe this new movement is a step in the wrong direction for the genre, this release showcases DVA adapting to the dynamic production levels of European house and techno and twisting them for a ruder, contemporary London-centric audience.

"Natty" is based around a heavily staggered snare-driven rhythm that gives the track its infectious off-centre, skippy nature. It is a slow, percussive trip that swaggers and staggers with tribal influences. It is a truly unique track, almost free from any other labelling whatsoever. "Ganja" however, is much simpler. It follows a 4/4 pulse but feels loose and rolls along to some jackin' polyrhthms and loopy lead synth. Perhaps the better track for the dancefloor, "Ganja's" catchy bassline merges perfectly DVA's more minimal approach to funky dub step.

Hyperdub are always pushing dub step, helping forge new sounds and different techniques. Even within the funky sound, the label's output shows varying approaches. Through DVA, it shows a darker, more minimal take on the sound through splicing elements of house and techno into the genre.

F About
No Gyal Tune
Review: Four Flowdan tracks produced by Footsie, The Bug, Coki and Masro delivered on Hyperdub. This ticks so many boxes it's impossible to count them all. Naturally each track slaps with demonstrative clarity: "Ambush" rolls on a bed of 808s as Flowdan explains his tactics with confidence. It's the perfect entry point to an EP that gets angrier by the bar. "People Power" is concentrated menace: all droning bass and textured processes on the drums and Flowdan's evil spits. "F About" is a unique jam of snare rolls and off-beat twisted synth horns that's perfect for Flowdan's sermons on not messing around musically. "No Gyal Tune" finishes the set with loopy militancy; grab the money, grab the trophy... No one is murdering it like Flowdan right now. Serious business indeed!

Trouble
Dirty Dutch
John Wayne
Review: If you're familiar with the razor sharp UKF formula of Funkystepz, then there won't be any surprises, on this EP but with production this tight there's no need for any kind of deviation from the norm. "Trouble" is the most stripped back, utilising tight drum rolls and rave whistles in combination with deep subs, while "Dirty Dutch" takes a less rhythm based approach, and fills its space with bleeps and squelching bass, with heady melodies brought into check with its inbuilt rewinds. Finally, "John Wayne" offers the most atmospheric track on the EP, taking a deeper techno bassline and melding it with a synth stab, elastic melody and emotive strings, whilst still retaining their insistent rhythmic power.

You Know What I Feel
Review: Detroit meet dubstep: dubstep, meet Detroit. Kyle Hall knocks down barriers on this release, bringing his free-flowing, insouciant production style to the UK bass music scene. After dropping a remix of Darkstar's "Aidy's Girl Is A Computer" in 2009, Hyperdub boss Kode9 called on Hall's precocious talents for a solo release on the imprint.

His brief production career has so far encompassed house, techno, jazz and now dubstep, although such parameters are fairly meaningless to a young producer for whom the internet, analogue equipment, high tech kit and software programming are all part of one wonderful, disjointed bundle for making and consuming music.

"Kaychunk" features soft melodic synths floating over the top of a schizophrenic drum pattern, while vocal snippets help give the track some structure. B-side "You Know What I Feel" is very much in the Floating Points school of dubstep, meandering gently along with no obvious destination - but of course the destination hardly matters, because the ride itself is so damn fun.

Make no mistake, Hall is a prodigious talent and with releases slated for labels as diverse and forward-thinking as Carl Craig's Planet E, Sheffield's iconic Warp and Instra:mental’s Non Plus, it's already obvious that the serious players are taking notice.

Badmind
Review: The news that arch mystic sonic brewers Hype Williams had been signed up for single duties on Hyperdub might have seemed odd at first, but listening to the four tracks here proves that it was a sound move. There's a bewitching sensation that creeps over the hazed, lo-fi beatdown jams that ensures you keep flipping the vinyl over repeatedly to seek out the subtle sonics beneath. At times it sounds like Dean and Inga have been watching Akira on the reg, with the chimed melodies present on "Rise Up" and "Badmind" certainly reminiscent of the iconic anime's soundtrack. As with previous output from the group, Kelly Price W8 Gain Vol II is likely to split opinion but for those ardent fans this is an essential purchase.

Simulacrum
Review: Hyperdub kick off 2008 the way they intend to proceed, with new tracks from a new artist. On her debut release, Ikonika comes with her own unique,
warped yet soulful bleep sound. With shape shifting beats that switch styles every few bars it's hard to pin these two tracks down… cos if it was easy, it
just wouldn't be Hyperdub. Both tunes on the 'Please' 12" are one minute minimal/one minute maximal, driven along by Ikonika's special combination
of wonky synth and deep swingin' sub bass melodies that place them somewhere between an early, blocky grime instrumental and the sweeter side of
Detroit techno - except with better bass of course! Who needs a vocalist when your synth can sing like this? Quite how Kode9 manages to keep
unveiling new producers of such abundant talent is a conundrum, but one to be cracked some other time when we're not so busy keeping up with this
astonishing label's ceaseless march into the future.

The Chase
Liloo's Seduction
Review: Both an intriguing and very cool release on Hyperdub, Philly producer King Britt surfaces after a long absence with this new project that goes beyond his traditionally lush and funky nu-jazz and broken beat releases into a darker and chillier place. The Gary Numan-meets-Prince spank of "Chasing Rainbows" is a great starter, while the off-the-wall drum programming of "The Chase" and the filmic swathe of "Lilloo's Seduction" show a breadth of talent that can only come from being in the game for 15 years plus.

Review: With his own album twitching at the gates, Kuedo brings his synth-laden delirium to King Midas Sound's "Goodbye Girl". He starts proceedings on a tart melodic line underpinned by some monolithic bass tones. The mournful quality of the original wafts through, acting as just the right counterbalance to Kuedo's day-glo styles. Mala opts for a bleak, dread fuelled take on "Earth A Kill Ya". A menacing, drawn out intro peppered with ghostly tones kicks into gear with a minimum of fuss over a persistent sub stab. If you appreciate music written to conjure up demons then this track has everything you need.

Review: Kode 9 may have been widely lauded in the past, but those reactions are nothing next to the deep shudder of awe that greeted this jaw-dropping single with the enigmatic raw-throated Daddy Gee. Kode 9's musical virus is a constant mutation of Jamaican dub & dancehall, German micro techno, and moody UK garage & drum & bass. Accurately describing the effect of this beatless dub cover of Prince's 'Sign O' The Times' with lyrics slang scribed by Gee into yard patios is near impossible, but these gents of the press were among the first to attempt it.

Autumn Has Come
Review: Announced back in September, news of the first release of substance from Kode 9 and The Spaceape in three years was naturally roundly greeted given their status at the top of the pecking order for apocalyptic producer-MC combos. Of course the release of Killing Season has been massively overshadowed by the recent passing of The Spaceape (aka Stephen Samuel Gordon) after a long battle with a rare form of cancer, but his commitment to music has remained undimmed despite health issues and this five track EP is as good as anything the pair have worked on. It's as dark as ever, but "Devil Is A Liar" too shows a lighter, more limber approach to the finished product, not so leaden in British urban dread. The minimalism reaches a peak on "Heart" with its slithering smatterings of trap and plush chords, while The Spaceape rips the human condition to shreds, and the later into the EP you go the more adventurous the tracks become.

Review: After a summer spent deep within their own customized black hole, Kode9 & Spaceape emerge with this all-new single, the only vinyl outing for 2 tracks providing a preview of their feverishly awaited incoming full length CD 'Memories Of The Future', due at the front end of October. Featuring one of Spaceape's most direct verbal performances yet, 'Curious' opens in the wind tunnel - laced by the lush vocals of new recruit to the Hyperdub Kru, Ms. Haptic - and refrains with the infectiously ambivalent chorus "Maybe we will save you... Maybe we will kill you". Rushed along by its bustling hi-hats, 'Curious' drops into Hyperdub's customary wall of sub. While both tracks feature Kode9's distinctively offkey combination of melodica and synth, and an equally upfront vocal, 'Portal' swerves into another orbit altogether with deranged, alien synths skewing an accelerated, rollin' half-step groove, as Spaceape flows from outer to inner space. A wake up call to dub zombies everywhere. "A truly original ska-tech probe. Jettisoning dubstep's sludge step dirge for levitational piano chords, hallucinatory melodica loops and disorientating fx vapour trails, they've stepped up their game admirably. And with Spaceape moving out of LKJ's shadow into his own regal kingdom, there's an air of befitting confidence, and that's brilliantly heightened by Ms Haptic, sounding like Nicolette locked in the echo chamber.
