Max Him - "Japanese Girl" (extended version)
PJ Marcus - "For Your Sweet Information" (extended version)
Roxana - "In Your Eyes" (extended Voval version)
Fabian Nesti - "Heigh Ho" (extended version)
Midnight Passion - "I Need Your Love" (club mix)
Max Him - "Lady Fantasy" (remix)
Review: Six tracks by some of the less conspicuous names in 1980s Italo disco scene get pressed to a singular unifying 12" here. Commemorating Cruisin' Records' 40th anniversary (1983-2023), 'Takes Over' is a delightful compilation scouring the exclusive vaults of its back catalogue, with label mainstay Nello Jay handling curation duties. Largely centring on the year 1985, two cuts from, 'Japanese Girl' and 'Lady Fantasy', come courtesy of Max Him, while the likes of 'For Your Sweet Information' by PJ Marcus, 'In Your Eyes' by Roxana', and 'Heigh Ho' by Fabian Nesti all stomp, gyrate, and whoop away, indulging the very same escapist fantasies as those involved in the scene back then.

Rite De Passage - "Lord Randal" (Mitra Mitra remix) (5:40)
Rite De Passage - "Lord Randal" (ARN4L2 remix) (7:05)
Review: Testlab Records' latest release transports us back to 1982 and the obscure, rare recordings of Dutch post-punk band Necronomicon and their Fetisj label-mates Rite De Passage. On the A-side you'll find a trio of cuts, most of which were featured on a now impossible-to find cassette called Sport. Necronomicon offers up 'Mimi', a new wave dancefloor number built around elastic slap-bass, lo-fi drum machine beats and spacey synths, and the similarly rubbery vocal number 'Join', while there's also a chance to enjoy Rite De Passage's early Visage-esque 'Lord Randall'. That track gets the 21st century remix treatment on the flip: Mitra Mitra delivers a heavier, more tooled-up club revision, before ARN4L2 opts for bouncy, Afro-house influenced drums and blissful synth melodies.

Review: Arnaud Rebotini's latest work finds him pushing the boundaries of his electronic sound yet again, with a potent blend of EBM, electronica and techno. The EP feels like a natural evolution of his signature style, diving into contrasts that oscillate between stark intensity and moments of quiet reflection. There's an emotional depth that underpins these tracks, with each one carrying an almost cinematic weightieach layer meticulously constructed to draw the listener into its world. The powerful driving beats are tempered by more introspective elements, making this EP an unpredictable but rewarding listen. Rebotini continues to carve out a distinctive niche in the electronic scene, delivering something fresh yet familiar, once again proving his reputation as an innovator.

Review: Big week for Dutch imprint Gooiland Elektro who bring on the maximum possible bleakness; first with Radko and now with the foreboding hydra that is Roberto Auser and Melting Dogma. Auser aka Derk Reneman on side A contributes the typically Dutch greyscale electro snarl of 'Man With Dead Leg' followed by a mental slow techno cut 'Imperative'. On the flip, Melting Dogmas, a side project of 4cantons, continues to go at it full force with the hypnotic 303 tunnel vision of 'Wanting To Be With' followed by the body bashing IDM fury of 'Indistinguishable Indications'.

Review: Robyn and Royksopp's collaborative mini-album Do It Again combines the talents of two seasoned acts known for their broad appeal and stylistic exploration. Although technically an EP, the record has the epic sweep of a full-length album, blending contemplative instrumental passages with conventional songwriting. Tracks like the title track 'Do It Again' feature Robyn's expressive vocals against a backdrop of galloping dance-pop, while other cuts like 'Every Little Thing' and 'Monument' venture into more idiosyncratic directions, from contemporary Italo-disco to prophetic visions of the future. Do It Again is a rewarding listen that captures the essence of both artists' creative energy. With its generous offerings and signature blend of sex and circuitry, the album proves to be an extravagant yet heartfelt endeavor that delights the ears and leaves a lasting impression.

Review: Japan is well known for its pretty out there contemporary arts and culture, a country that, during the 20th Century, reinvented itself, transforming the outward image from that of a historic imperial power ruled by tradition to a arguably the nation most prepared for the future to arrive. This is evident in many areas, not east children's entertainment, as this rather obscure outing goes to show.

'Computer Obaachan' was originally featured on the show Everyone's Song, whereby musicians, often high profile and rather influential, would make appearances, singing and performing work aimed squarely at keeping little ones glued. In this instance, that name was the legendary Ryuichi Sakamoto, who, among other things, is known for the innovative back catalogue of Yellow Magic Orchestra. Thanks to his involvement, the song, and its B-side made a few years later for a high quality vinyl single release catalysed by popular demand, has become something of a cult collector's item. So here's your chance to collect.

Review: The second of three rather dashing looking Minimal Wave releases this week throws the focus on the early 80s work of Bristol duo Five Times of Dust. Minimal Wave's interest in Robert Lawrence and Mark Philip's work together was first revealed back in 2011 with the inclusion of their composition "Computer Bank" on The Hidden Tapes compilation, whilst Veronica Vasicka's label hinted at a more substantial Five Times Of Dust offering earlier this year with the cassette reissue of The Dadacomputer, Phillips and Lawrence's debut release together. Smile with the Eyes is that promised extensive reappraisal of Five Times of Dust, drawing from a large pool of unreleased material recorded by Robert Lawrence and Mark Philips between 1982 and 1986, which fully justifies the label's description as "perfectly formed electronic curiosities". Cuts like "The Single Off The Album" and "Ethnic Bomb" demand further investigation.

Review: Ever since its release in 1974, Thomas Leer and Robert Rental's The Bridge has never been reissued. Rental passed away in 2000 and this was their only record together, but boy what a record it is. It first came on Throbbing Gristle's legendary Industrial Records and immediately showed off the artists' unique musical visions with its avant-garde synth-pop sounds and evocative electronic landscapes. It comes just after the end of a vital exhibition in London, 'From The Port To The Bridge' which shared the story behind the making of this cult classic album.

Review: Space Oddities (1972 - 1982) are the results of Frenchman Georges Achille Teperino aka Nino Nardini, fellow countryman Roger Roger and German Eddie Warner's collaborations over ten years at Ganaro recording studio. Given some underground recognition in the late nineties by the likes of Barry 7 of Add N to (X) (with his Connectors series) or UK electronica legend Luke Vibert, they can now add Alexis Le-Tan (Les Edits Du Golem) and Jess as devotees, who made the effort of compiling the release. As Born Bad stated quite succinctly, the trio used their "strange instruments to sketch out the beginnings of something that resembled the future of music. This collection presents some of the highlights from their light-hearted, electronic pop sessions."

Review: Well, this is rather exciting. Some 20 years after the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop closed its doors, original members Peter Howell, Roger Limb, Dr Dick Mills, Paddy Mills and long-time collaborator Paddy Kingsland have recorded a new album. Made up of four long improvisations stretched across eight sides of 10" vinyl, the set was partly inspired by Francis Bacon's unfinished utopian novel/poem New Atlantis (a portion of which used to sit on the wall of the Workshop's studio, having been placed their by co-founder Daphne Oram). Typically, it's a woozy, trippy and mind-altering affair full of dystopian ambience, wayward modular electronics, intergalactic movements and deep space weirdness. In other words, it's the Radiophonic Workshop record we've been waiting for.

Review: Ed Rain's debut is a bold exploration of post-genre musical landscapes. The album blends serious and playful elements into a beguiling trip that goes from the sluggish beats of 'Subway Gang' and 'Slow Talk' to playful post-punk electronica in 'Invocation' and 'z 'AX'. Rain displays a wide array of influences in his work which fans of Jon Hassel, Philipp Glass and Adrian Sherwood might detect, while collaborations with Julienne Dessagne and Diana Miron add depth. This album was written between 2022 and 2024 and is a great debut with plenty of emotional vulnerability.

Review: 2014 was a tumultuous period for Polachek as she and her band grew apart; She wanted to create an aesthetic world, make the band dress better and invest in visuals. Needless to say, the 2010s indie band Chairlift wasn't entirely on board. Polachek was creatively parched and set about a production career, producing 'Arcadia' on her laptop whilst on tour using only MIDI instruments, laptop microphone and field recordings (like on the atmospheric 'Hissing Pipes at Dawn'). This period continued with Polachek beginning to perform in small venues in New York under different names, donning a blonde fringed wig and creating an expansive, yet quaint universe that would unquestionably influence the creating of her breakout solo debut 'Pang' 5 years later. Arcadia spans from ambient medieval-esque wind sections to zany strings that conjure up gusts billowing through green pastures with blue skies overhead. 'Dominic' has stood the test of time as the most popular of the tracks, a relationship that's a 'perfect disaster'. Highlights are the organ-led 'Backwards & Upwards' on purging infatuation, stepping backwards to move upwards as Polachek puts it, and 'Lady's Got Gills' with its whistles and what may be a blend of harp, yangqin and guzheng that backs a story of a woman contained. Arcadia is lo-fi cinematic, in a sentence, and a must listen to Polachek fans.

Review: A Lou Rebecca full length has been on the cards for a while and now it lands a year after her breakout and self-titled "Lou" EP. The Austin-based Parisian synth-pop singer makes music that is nuanced with romanticism and driven by soft but decisive drum patterns that make you want to bop. There are vibrant songs with contemporary sensibilities, rich pop nuggets and darker tacks like "Break It Apart" but it is when Lou is at her most happy and outgoing that she sounds best for our money. Check the lovely, harmonically smooth ditty that is "Desire" for proof.

Review: 2020 marks the tenth of collaboration for Red Axes, the Tel Aviv-based duo of Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi. Informed by post-punk, new wave, and a plethora of club sounds old and new, they have cleaved a singular path with their hefty discography. To celebrate their anniversary, they reunite with Dark Entries for an eponymous 11 track LP brimming with jagged guitars, spacy arpeggios, and hypnotic vocals. Although Sadovnik and Arzi have previously released LPs on I'm A Cliche and Garzen Records, Red Axes is their first effort written and conceived of as an album-length listening experience. This work flows effortlessly through a variety of stylistic detours, highlighting their ears as both keen listeners and skilled DJs. Opener 'They Game' is a grooving number that unifies the psychedelia of cosmic disco with the early 90s 'baggy' sound. The energy mounts further with "Shelera", a guitar-driven acidic banger, and "Sticks and Stones", a certifiable club hit fueled by sassy vocals courtesy of Adi Bronicki. Launching Side B is "Break the Limit", an EBM-laced number that wouldn't sound out of place on a Razormaid compilation. The following tracks wax moodier, with "Brotherhood (Of the Misunderstanding)" touching on darkwave territory. "Udibaby" and "Arpman" close out the album with their respectively dense and sparse takes on kosmische lysergia. Red Axes was mixed by Steve Dub and mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The album's artwork starkly depicts the project's name in blood-red smear. Also included is a postcard with full credits and album art. It's rare one finds an album that so casually challenges classification while still being firmly rooted on the dancefloor.
