Review: Following a string of praised releases for labels the likes of Dreamlord Recordings, Library Of The Occult and Up In Her Room, Jonathan Parkes (Korb) and Dom Keen (Studio Kosmische) team up once more for Bongo Express, a one-off vinyl drop via Crouch End's Feral Child. This time, the pair lean hard into their mutual obsessions: dusty mid-70s textures, radiophonic wig-outs and low-slung kraut-funk. Built around rattling bongos and scuzzy analogue synths, the record rides a hypnotic groove that sits somewhere between library oddity, imagined road movie score and late-night Berlin jam session.

Love That Lady (2:34)
Don't Take Your Love (3:13)
Review: Chicago native James "Soul" Holvay is a true soul survivor. Best known for penning the 1967 U.S. No.1 hit 'Kind of a Drag for The Buckinghams,' Holvay led The Mob before stepping away from music in the late 70s. But with the resurgence of retro soul, he made a stunning comeback in 2020 and was soon channelling the golden era sounds of Curtis Mayfield, Gene Chandler and Johnny Pate once more. His 2021 'Sweet Soul Song' EP earned critical acclaim, and now LRK Records drops two gems from his Working Man EP in the form of 'Love That Lady' and 'Don't Take Your Love', both pure vintage Chicago soul heaters.

Ambulance Dub (4:15)
The Bigger Tutti (4:18)
Review: A 7" that delivers a hypnotic fusion of dub, broken beat and experimental soundscaping, reinforcing the Trule label's reputation for pushing sonic boundaries. The trioiAllen Wootton, Susumu Mukai and Valentina Magalettiicraft a release that feels both deeply rooted in tradition and strikingly forward-thinking.
'Ambulance Dub' unfolds with cavernous echoes, weighty basslines and fractured rhythms, creating an atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly. Layers of percussive textures and swirling dissonance shape a track that constantly shifts yet remains immersive. On the flip side, 'The Bigger Tutti' refines this approach into a slick instrumental, nodding to the deep, textural brilliance of On-U Sound. The crisp production and rich dub aesthetics make it an ideal example of rhythmic experimentation.

Ain't It Funky Now (4:32)
Greasy Spoon (4:10)
Review: Late, great Japanese funk don Takehiro Honda's vaults get the treatment from HMV as two of his many famously fizzy jams enjoy a new lease of life. 1971's "Ain't It Funky Now" should be familiar by all as it subverts the good work of the greatest band leader of all time with mild jazz and funk fusion. "Greasy Spoon" on the B can be found a few years deeper into Takehiro's discography as part of his 1973 album "What's Going On". Another supreme, lucid fusion cut; not only does it still kick up a fuss on the dancefloor, it also salutes the best cooked breakfasts on the planet. Not to be slept on.

Something New (3:39)
Something New (extended Smooth version By Philip Ward) (5:21)
Review: Texas-based jazz harpist Cindy Horstman quietly released Fretless in 1995, a self-assured exploration of jazz textures and instrumental elegance. Tucked among its originals is 'Something New', a standout soul jazz cut that drifts with mid-tempo grace, elevated by James Kings', well, fret-free vocal perforations. Horstman's harp is hardly heard here on this album salvaging; instead, she procured 'Something New', steeped in street and smooth soul, with tuned claves and electronic triangles abounding. Pressed on clear vinyl and limited to 300 copies, this small-batch reissue offers a welcome return for a quietly majestic moment in 90s jazz-soul fusion.

What Now (3:34)
Meditation (feat Ramona Reid & Ann Sensing) (3:54)
Review: The upcoming second solo studio album by US singer-songwriter and guitarist Brittany Howard (of Alabama Shakes fame), What Now follows up Jaime and its Reimagined edition, striking out with a fierce, "truest and bluest", nigh "brutal" lyricism, in which Howard addresses the titular question - "what now?" - and how today's society might respond. Written, of course, during the height of the pandemic, when such doubts were excised and up in the air (and more so than usual), the album's sonic aesthetic spans full-bodied funk, psychedelic chord progressions, and a powerful bombast. The overall answer sounds to be: move through it; surrender to "the now", gracefully.

Peter Hunnigale - "Crazy Feeling Of Love" (3:22)
Brixton Heights Orchestra & Gaudi - "Caruggi Jazz" (3:22)
Review: Brixton Heights Records' 'This Crazy Feeling Called Love' is a collaborative single by the Brixton Heights Crew, Kieko De Stefanis, and Gaudi. The track features Mafia & Fluxi on drums and bass, Gaudi on piano and co-production, and contributions from the Ital Horns, N. Gatti, and R. Rassi. Legendary reggae singer Peter Hunnigale provides new English lyrics that have been adapted from an old reggae song by the Italian band Sensasciou. The A-Side showcases Hunnigale's iconic vocals, while the B-side, 'Caruggi Jazz,' is an instrumental tribute to Genoa's charming alleys with a dub-infused orchestral sound. Mixed by Gaudi and mastered by Augustus "Gussie" Clarke, this is sure to become a dancefloor hit.

This new version is just the fifth release from the Tok 2 label and it arrives on a 7" that showcases both artists' distinctive styles with Hunnigale's soulful vocals and Irie's dynamic DJing making it a real winning sound. The Rough Riders - "We Need Some Satisfaction" (dub music) (2:57)
Review: Originally released in 1979, this rare 45 from the American reggae artist now sees a well-deserved reissue, bringing classic roots and lovers rock reggae back to its intended format. On Side-A, 'We Need Some Satisfaction' delivers a dynamic horn section, a classy reggae groove and strong, soulful vocals that truly is killer. The track strikes a perfect balance between rhythm and melody, exuding the smooth vibe of late '70s reggae. On Side-B, 'Dub Music' takes us into deep dub territory, with a mostly instrumental arrangement, peppered with vocal snippets to keep the connection to the original track. The deep roller bass and atmospheric layers create a deeper listening experience for dub enthusiasts.

Review: Detroit native Bobby Hutton made history by performing on the first nationally televised Soul Train episode in 1971. His journey in music led him to record with Phillips, producing many sought after tracks.
The two tracks on this 7" were originally released back-to-back in 1974 on the ABC label. Both songs were co-written and produced by McKinley Jackson, who played a significant role in crafting hits for Lamont Dozier, Freda Payne, and The Four Tops at ABC during the early to mid-70s. Grammy Award-winning Reggie Dozier, Lamont Dozier's brother, also contributed as a co-writer. This 7" has not been reissued in 40 years, and original copies are highly prized in the UK. Northern Soul music is one of the most in-demand genres for rare 45 diggers. This is a great example.

Originally released in 1973, this track is a soulful gem that resonates with fans and collectors alike. On Side-1, 'Lend A Hand' stands out as an impressive track, showcasing Hutton's powerful vocals and emotional depth. Side-2 features 'Come See What's Left Of Me,' originally from 1969. With approximately 40 recordings under Gibbs alone, this track embodies the classic elements synonymous with their collaborations and comes complete with a distinctive penny whistle. Bursting with energetic vibes and trademark topical lyrics characteristic of the Pioneers, this song resonates with the musical essence that defines their legacy.

Review: Prince Fatty's 'Mercedes Benz' with Shniece and Horseman is a rub-a-dub version of a 1970s hit from Janis Joplin that now gets a very special pressing courtesy of Lovedub Limited. The A-side kicks off with the spine-tingling and epic original vocal before disappearing into a world of reverb. At that point the dubby low end arrives and brings a different vibe to the stunning vocals but one that really makes a mark next to new bars from Horseman, police sirens and funky riffs. It's a tough sound system groove that is backed with a fine version and has been a firm fixture of Prince Fatty's record box for a while now.

Review: Paketo Wilson's 'Immigration' is a hymn to freedom from the Kingston, Jamaica-born artist. It first arrived on the Child of God label in 1982 and is one of the self-declared "positive rastaman"'s finest tunes. He was introduced to music by his father and through watching them play managed to pick up his own skills with no formal turning. His career began at age 16 when he played concerts all around the island with the New Vibration Band before going solo with Daddy U-Roy's King Stur Gav Sound System. Now back in its original form, 'Immigration' is a tune that remains as relevant now as ever.

Review: This split single pairs two hip-hop legends for a compelling blend of styles. On Side-1, 'What's Happening', unites Method Man and Busta Rhymes over a soulful piano-driven beat, delivering charismatic flows and undeniable energy. Their chemistry crackles as the track bridges classic Wu-Tang grit with Busta’s rapid-fire dynamism. On the Side-2, an exclusive mix of 'Back In The Game' collides with the instrumental of 'House Of Flying Daggers', creating a hypnotic reimagining. The intricate production layers cinematic depth under sharp lyricism, offering a fresh perspective on both tracks. This release shines as a celebration of lyrical mastery and innovative production, giving fans of both Wu-Tang and boundary-pushing hip-hop plenty to savor.

It's a beat-driven workout with funk in the drums. The B-side offers an exclusive and rather more stripped-back mix of 'Back in the Game' with Ron Isley, Inspectah Deck, Method Man, GZA, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah all seamlessly blended with the instrumental of 'House of Flying Daggers.'
