Review: The unstoppable force of Czarface is back yet again with another heavyweight hip hop assault. This time around the super group of Wu Tang's Inspectah Deck and 7L & Esoteric are joined by the mighty Ghostface Killah - as you'd expect the results are big. The beats are wild, with the sample sources veering from Hammer horror dread to cosmic synth wobbles and dubbed out bass, as hard rocking as it is trippy and loose. Meanwhile the lyrical flows are razor sharp, with Esoteric, Inspectah and Ghostface all sparring at the top of their game. This is deadly modern hip hop that recognises what made the golden era special without cashing in on old tricks.

Review: Art-rap circles quake in their super-boots at the seismic reemergence of Frankie Pulitzer - the alter ego of Black Hawk Down actor Tom Hardy no less - whose newest record with longer-time heavyweight Method Man is a madcap, supervillainous new one. As ever for the Czarface universe denizens, the record unfolds over a sketchy pulp narrative, blurring Bizarro mythopoeses and underground rap grit: Esoteric and Inspectah Deck trade verses with a sharp, almost conspiratorial energy - "Everything I thought I knew is null and void and destroyed / Day is night, left's right, heavy's light" - while 7L's production as always flip-flops between an antiheroic sinister-surreal.

Review: One of the most exciting releases, just in time for Christmas, former Wu-Tang Clan rapper Inspectah Deck and legendary tag team Esoteric and 7L are Czarface, the hip-hop supergroup keeping that old alt-rap flame alive a la MF DOOM, who shared in the group's adoration of superhero comic books (even doing a collaboration album with them, his first posthumous release since his untimely passing). Czarface are in their own lane though, make no mistake. The lead single 'You Know My Style' is an amazing clash of Deck, The Czar-keys and NYC rapper NEMS, Esoteric rattling off comic book and NBA references against a beat that can only be described as devious. Pressed on neon green vinyl, echoing the scaly reptilian villain on the cover.

Review: MF Doom may no longer be with us, but previously unheard examples of the late, great MC/producer's work will continue to appear in stores for some time to come. Super What?, the follow-up to his 2018 collaboration with hip-hop supergroup Czarface (AKA 7L, Esoteric and Wu-Tang's Inspectah Deck), is the first posthumous release to hit stores. Predictably, it's superb, with a combination of crunchy MPC drums, dusty samples (including all manner of quirky spoken word snippets), on-point scratches, killer guest spots (see DMC on 'The King and Eye' and Del the Funky Homosapien on 'Jason & The Czargonauts') and on-point rhymes combining on a set that has the feel of a future hip-hop classic.
