Review: Blue Note's Tone Poet series continues to revisit some of the label's most seminal releases and give them a new spit and polish before cutting them to virgin wax. This time out it is the Charles Mingus classic Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus from 1964. The American composer and bassist collaborated with arranger and orchestrator Bob Hammer to score this one, which is all about music for a large ensemble of brass and saxophones. The eight tracks range from empty and pensive to stirring and optimistic. Though none of the tunes were new for this session, the way they are played brings plenty of freshness to each.

Mingus' radical reimagining of Gershwin's A Foggy Day features jarring sound effects before settling into a more upbeat groove. 'Profile of Jackie' offers a moment of conventional beauty, showcasing Mingus' melodic side, while 'Love Chant' explores hypnotic repetition, though it drags in its early stages. However, the track evolves into an engaging improvisational journey. Featuring Jackie McLean and J.R. Monterose on sax, Mal Waldron on piano, and Willie Jones on drums, Mingus leads this quintet through a daring exploration of jazz's future. Review: An exciting, previously unreleased live recording of the iconic US jazz bassist Charles Mingus captured in Buenos Aires in June 1977. The performance features a stellar lineup with Ricky Ford on tenor sax, Jack Walrath on trumpet, Robert Neloms on piano and Dannie Richmond on drums, and now comes transferred from the original tape reels, recorded by engineer Carlos Melero, having been meticulously mastered by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab. This limited-edition triple album set is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Le Vinylist, and comes with an elaborate booklet featuring newly commissioned liner notes and interviews with artists influenced by Mingus. Released in with the authorisation of the Charles Mingus Estate, this is an exclusive offering for Record Store Day 2025.

Review: Celebrated jazz man Charles Mingus took Manhattan by storm when he played a series of legendary darts at the world famous Birdland venue in New York between 1961 and 196. Now, in conjunction with the Mingus Estate, the complete collection of those sessions make it to vinyl for the first time ever. Mingus Takes Manhattan - The Complete Birdland Dates: 1961 - 1962 is taken from the original reel-to-reel tapes used for the radio broadcasts at the time. These rare recordings comes with a 44-page book with a foreword from Christian McBride.
