Avalon (6:47)
Review: Mattia Trani, son of legendary Italian DJ Marco Trani (the most influential DJ in Rome throughout the 1980s), has previously impressed with a gaggle of techno twelves, mostly on his own PushMaster Discs label. This 12" for the shadowy Lunar Orbiter Program label sees him debut a new alias, 051 Destroyer. It seems him turn his hand to a range of largely hard-wired electro-related styles, from the weighty lo-fi thrust of club-ready opener "Digital River" and Braindance-inspired insanity of "Drexciya Descendents", to the wild sci-fi electronics and electro/techno fusion beats of the surprisingly jacking "The Hdyro Return". Closer "Avalon", a deeper, warmer and more relaxed affair with hints of IDM, is also impressive.

Love In Motion (Vanzetti & Sacco edit) (6:45)
Review: For the latest missive on their reissue-focused Attic Salt Discs imprint, Dusty-fingered duo Colin Volvert and Otto Kraanen have snapped up the rights to a sought-after 1984 cut from Belgian new wave band 1000 Ohm. You'll find their original vocal and instrumental versions on the A-side, with both sounding like a delightful cross between bubbly Italo-disco, Bobby 'O' style Hi-NRG and the imperial synth-pop of the Pet Shop Boys. Arguably even better than both original mixes is Vanzetti and Sacco's more dancefloor-focused flipside edit. While this does make use of 1000 Ohm's Heaven 17/ABC style vocals and cheery melodies, there's far more focus on the druggy arpeggio groove and chunky drum machine beats.

Review: The always cultured Emotional Rescue kicks of the first of what will be a series of reissue sou the music of young Michael Ashley aka Haile Maskel. He hailed from Trenchtown in Jamaica and grew up singing, learning guitar and bass, redoing under the tutelage of Bob Marley early on. Here his soul drenched reggae is offered dup with 'Crazy Kind Of Feeling', a unique track with horns and big bass but also a subtle disco energy. Next to a dub take, Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb serves up a mix that embellishes on the disco elements.

Hot Tonight (part II) (4:06)
Review: Here's a nod to late 70s disco, funk and boogie featuring some of the best NYC musicians to grace the scene in the past 20 years, and recorded at Soul Fire Studios featuring over two dozen musicians. Members of El Michels Affair, Lee Fields & The Expressions, The Dap- Kings, Antibalas and more are featured on 10th Street's '(Gonna Get) Hot Tonight' which is a classic and timeless disco funk affair featuring an absolutely sublime string section. Over on the flip, the slower and more emotive 'Hot Tonight' (part II) makes for feelgood vibes on the dancefloor later in the night, featuring sensual vocals to boot.

(Livin' In) New York City (3:26)
Moodies Basement (4:19)
Review: Masterminded by Jeff Dynamite Silverman, 10th Street is an all-star studio band comprised of some of NYC's best disco, funk and soul musicians of the last two decades (including members of Antibalas, the Dap-Kings, The Expressions and El Michels Affair). The collective's self-titled debut album, which dropped earlier this year, is a genuine must-listen and offers a near perfect distillation of disco, soul and funk flavours of the 1970s. This 7" single sports two of that set's standout cuts: hazy, mid-tempo, laidback disco-funk number 'Livin' In New York City', where Blaxploitation guitar licks, spacey synths, sustained organ chords and eyes-closed female vocals catch the ear, and the weightier, more percussive and undeniably dancefloor-friendly instrumental 'Moodie's Basement'. In a word: essential!

Review: 10th Street is one of those devotional funk projects which sounds like it would wholly pass for the real deal, despite being made in recent times by a crack team of NYC musicians from bands including El Michels Affair, Lee Fields & The Expressions, The Dap-Kings and Antibalas. Following Mighty Eye's release of the group's self-titled debut album in 2022 comes this single, which tasks Tom Noble with whipping up a remix of 'E.A.R.L.'s Theme'. Whether you plump for the juiced up Noble remix or the sizzling groove of the original, you have the chance to cop some genuine dancefloor dynamite right here.

Nocturnal Hikes (5:32)
Review: This seems like a marriage made in heaven. It sees electro scene stalwart 214 (AKA sometime Frustrated Funk, Touchin' Bass, CPU and Klakson contributor Chris Roman) pitch up on Cultivated Electronics for the very first time. There's a real sci-fi feel to proceedings, as if the cuts were created to soundtrack some neon-lit movie set in a dystopian future. If dancing through the apocalypse is your thing, check the fuzzy and forthright electro-funk of "Earthworms" and the punchy, Drexciya-on-Tatooine pop of "It Never Really Ends". Elsewhere, opener "Linolium Or Cardboard" mixes off-kilter electro beats with Mascara-clad new wave synth sounds, while "Nocturnal Hikes" is impressively weird and spaced-out despite its crunchy drums and weighty bass.

Review: More majestic electro workouts from Chris "214" Roman, a producer who has been serving up slabs of tightly wound machine funk since the dawn of the decade. He opens his first Frustrated Funk outing for three years with the bittersweet deep electro shuffle of "Growing Old Together" before breaking up the beats, ratcheting up the bleeps and cranking out the crackles on alien funk throb-job "Last Dance". Over on the flip, "Dislocated" is a high-tempo slab of end of days electro full of growling noises and creepy chords, while "Voice Check" is picturesque, dreamy and life affirming: a triumphantly positive and melodious conclusion to another stunning collection of cuts.

Perfect Circuit (6:09)
Take Away (6:27)
Mosquito Bay (6:46)
Review: It is always an event whenever Dutch label Klakson serves up a hot new platter. This one comes from 214 who has made himself something of a regular on the label in recent times. His high speed, high quality contemporary electro sounds are driven by rugged machine funk and proudly analogue textures. 'Around The Bend' is the breathless opening assault and it is backed up by 'Perfect Circuit' which somehow ups the ante with its glistening synth sequels and tightly woven drums. On the flip, 'Take Away' marvels at hyperspeed with warped and mangled voices stitched into the arrangement and 'Mosquito Bay' then offers a less dense, more cosmic electro exploration.

Pattern Rotate (5:43)
Review: Fresh from an inspired outing on 20:20 Vision, Chris Roman once again dons the 214 mask for a four-track missive of Steffi's resurgent Klakson imprint. Fittingly, opener "Soapdish" - a proper peak-time Rotterdam electro workout - utilizes synths sounds and ragged riffs that invoke memories of Dexter's Klakson classic "Intruder", while "Synthesizers Made of Paper" brilliantly wraps spacey, life-affirming electronics motifs around a suitably crunchy machine beat. Over on side B, "Snow Banks" is a mildly foreboding, surprisingly melancholic chunk of deep electro brilliance and closer "Pattern Rotate" buries chiming lead lines below a deluge of twisted acid lines and distorted, funk-fuelled electro drums. Simply essential.

I See What You Did There (9:25)
Review: Nijmegen label Shipwrec have been in fairly imperious form this year, canvassing the spectrum of electro for some fine sounding and even-finer-looking records. Washington State artist Chris Roman issued his second 214 album on Shipwrec last year and returns here for "I See What You Did There", the first of several singles to arrive over the coming months - Central Processing Unit, Frustrated Funk and Lunar Disko also have records in the works with him. Taking shape as a one track 12" for the latest in Shipwrec's Silk Screen Printed Series, "I See What You Did There" snaps and throbs in all the right places across its nine minutes but is tempered with a sense of emotive contemplation that lends it some extra depth.

Review: Frustrated Funk, Shopwrec and Central Processing Unit are just some of the quality labels on which the enigmatic 214 has delivered his wayward strains of electro and techno. This new single for Lunar Disko is straight-up, high calibre business, as per usual, starting with the mesmerising pads and alluring soundscapes of "The Breakfast Club", a beat-driven escapade through a wave of majestic synths. "Lunar Landing" is more on the Dutch electro side of things, thanks to its sub-aquatic beats and general demeanour while, on the flip, "Jade" injects some Chicago house live through an industrial filter, and "Hurley" liquifies its synths down to a thick pool of sonics and subtle beats. Gorgeous music.

Review: After completing a quadrilogy of Mecanica releases for ESP Institute inspired by "opium dens and whorehouses" earlier this year, Serbian artist Nenad Markovi? brings his 33 10 3402 project to Music From Memory offshoot Second Circle. If you indulged in anyone of those Mecanica 12"s for Andrew Hogge's label you will be all over this Bura EP with Markovic channelling similar depths of rhythm and texture across the four tracks. There's enough semblance of rhythm on display in cuts like the title track and the dubby machine funk of "Syg" to intrigue the more adventurous DJs out there whilst "P-Tok" could easily be mistaken for a forgotten Borft B side. A superb record.

Incredible Doobie (40 Thieves edit)
Review: The fourth in the Private Release series overseen with such artistic aplomb by the Public Release imprint arrives with Rong Music clique 40 Thieves at the helm. Once again continuing the food based theme, this picture disc depicts the before and after stages of what happens when a burrito is placed in front of a hungry soul - with this choice of dish worthy of the Bay Area crew. Across both sides 40 Thieves serve up three edits as well as an original arrangement with the former triplet set to get those disco beards twitching with regards to the source. From the cosmic meanderings of "Wandering" to the dubby proto warehouse flex of "Wanting For Lust" and the psychedelic cosmiche wanderlust of "Incredible Doobie" our own train spotting endeavours are exhausted and seeped in failure. What is important however is each track is killer, and bettered by "Telegraph" a towering melange of ever climbing squeaky synth modulations and urgent rhythms. Big tip!

Review: San Fran sorts 40 Thieves' classic cover of Hot Chocolate's 'Don't Turn It Off' first came out way back in 2008, though it has reappeared at various points since with fresh remixes. Here Permanent Vacation, who originally released it all those years ago, revisit it once more. The Bay Area collective's original mix (B2) remains a 21st century disco classic - a dub disco re-make layered with spacey synths and stylish female vocals - while the new reworks genuinely take it to different places. Session Victim deliver two rubs - a wonderfully glassy-eyed, Balearic-tinged, up-tempo deep house 'Extended Mix' and a sunset-friendly house 'Dub' - before Studio Barnhus sort Bella Boo re-imagines it as a loved-up and spacey blend of nu-disco and rolling electronic house.

Review: Fran Mela's Dog In The Night label continues it's haphazard assault on our affections with a seventh release so far this year coming from French producer 45 ACP. Otherwise known as D.K., Parisian Dang Khoa has experienced something of a creative rebirth this year after a few years working as Darabi alongside Low Jack, with releases on Antinote, Odd Frequencies and Get The Curse. This being Dog In The Night, Khoa has reserved his most bugged out productions for the five track Hold On EP and anyone that's dipped their toes in the label's previous output will most definitely approve. If you like your house music to sound like it's on the cusp of all out malfunction then cuts like "Hold On" and "keep Walking" are likely to pepper your sets for months to come.

Review: 4E used to be Khan's apartment number in New York City's East Village back in the late 90's. 4E became the trademark sound for his downbeat acid infused electro work. On his kitchen floor he produced a very unique brand of futuristic funk tracks with only a ROLAND TB-303, SH-101 and the Hip-Hop fundamental SP1200 drum sampler. Besides a couple of 12"s for Force Inc. Music and the "Gentle Killer E.P." on Freddy Fresh's Socket imprint, 4E released the highly acclaimed downbeat electro album "4E4ME4YOU" on German glitch label Mille Plateaux. Back in 1998 4E shared the now legendary 12" with I-F "Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass" on the "From Beyond Series" by Ectomorph's Interdimensional Transmissions. Pills & Thrills" on Temple Traxx is four previously unreleased acid-electro stomper that are as funky and noisy as it can get on an East Village kitchen floor.

Review: The Was/Is crew have proven themselves to be dab hands at burrowing away at the hidden folds of the 90s electro scene and finding some truly unsung heroes worth of a reissue. Following on from excellent work supporting the likes of Archetype, the US label can now be found shining a spotlight on the work of Can Oral under the 4E moniker. Originally appearing on labels such as Force Inc and Mille Plateaux, 4E's sound was quintessentially mid-90s, but only surfaced over a short period of time between 1994 and 1998. This record originally came out on Sockett in 1996, and it's been sought after as avid diggers pull out every thread of dope, adventurous electro they can find. Discogs pirates laugh no more, because now this essential record is back in the hands of the real music fans!

Review: Brit-funk combo 52nd Street are undeniably best-known for their 1983 single on Factory Records, "Look Into My Eyes", which came accompanied by some killer remixes from John "Jellybean" Benitez and sailed closed to the NYC electro sound. The Manchester outfit's roots were in jazz-funk though, as this essential reissue of their 1982 debut single proves. "Look Into My Eyes" is simply superb: a warm, woozy and gently groovy affair full of attractive lead vocals, elastic slap bass, colourful synthesizer lines and dreamy chords. If you're after some more up-tempo dancefloor pressure, check out flipside "Express" - a riotous affair rich in hammered-out Clavinet lines, jaunty lead lines and energetic percussion.
