Hip Hop/R&B
Crosstown Beef (Street) (5:03)
Crosstown Beef (instrumental) (5:03)
Review: Long-time hip-hop heads will be familiar with this particular bit of beat-making history from back in 1998 when it dropped as part of PF Cuttin's 44 Magnum (Tape 44 Side A & B). It was his 44th mixtape back then and one of his most classics with this jam, Medina Green's 'Crosstown Beef', one of the standouts. It is lo-fi, perfectly undercooked, rides on a catchy bass riff with some slick bars and is a great and instant hit of nostalgia that has aged to perfection. An instrumental also appears on the flip.

Womp In My Spirit (vocal version) (2:40)
Womp In My Spirit (instrumental) (2:40)
Review: The wonderful new 'Womp In My Spirit' blends flashy 80s-inspired beats with smoothly delivered and rhythmic lyrics that together capture the essence of West Coast vibes with American Moniquea's distinctive vocals shining alongside masterful boogie beat maker XL Middleton's typically faultless contributions. Once again they have cooked up a gem for the modern funk scene and the instrumental version allows you to fully appreciate the depth of the production without the vocals. This one has already been getting bumped by renowned DJs like Walla P, Zackey Force Funk and Soul Clap and hits a perfect sweet spot between funk and hip-hop.

Big Time (instrumental) (3:15)
Review: The Nextmen team up once more with Kiko Bun here and he is proving himself to really be one of the UK's standout vocal talents right now. Together they to deliver a big anthem bursting with feel-good vibes. Perfect for sunny days, this track begs for windows down and volume up. The vocals are packed with soul and flow freely over instrumental beats with a cool sense of funk. The tune has another robust groove doused in club culture and a love of hip-hop, as is often the case with Dom Search and Brad Baloo aka The Nextmen who are renowned UK DJs and producers celebrated for their eclectic mixes, albums and podcasts.

Just My Luck (3:03)
Tomorrow Man (2:51)
Review: Obongjayar is back with a striking double-single release that mixes up contrasting styles into a cohesive artistic statement. The dreamlike, danceable pop of 'Just My Luck' captures themes of loneliness with an infectious rhythm and shimmering melodies. On the flip side, 'Tomorrow Man' is all about a raw, percussive energy that confronts the theme of laziness with unflinching honesty. Together, these two tracks showcase Obongjayar's ability to explore emotional depth and sonic diversity and offer a tantalising glimpse into the creative direction of his next chapter. Whatever that may bring, he remains a boundary-pushing voice.

Review: Open Mike Eagle's 'A Special Episode Of' dropped back in February of 2015 and now almost a decade on it gets a vinyl pressing on maroon and bone butterfly-splattered 12". The California talent is known for bringing a sense of humour to his work without ever compromising its musical integrity. The six tracks here find him linking with the likes of MC Paul Barman and Milo and tapping up Gold Panda and Exile for production duties. It's a storytelling out with crisp drums and stripped-back beats that are run through with soulful synths and string samples.

This Way (4:53)
Breathe & Stop (Abstract Blend) (4:00)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: New York producer P-Sol has hit on a super effective formula for starting the party, stitching together a selection of familiar samples and hooks, adding some beautifully dusty breaks and adding a final sheen of shiny production skills. Both sides of this 7" have a touch of raw 'two turntables' action about them, while remaining impeccably constructed and tight, with the A-side 'This Way' proving to be the slightly speedier and slightly more funk/r&b-flavoured, while 'Breathe & Stop (Abstract Blend)' is the one for the pure hip-hop heads. Both, however, are dynamite in the box, needless to say.

Flow Ya Mind (3:16)
Flow Ya Mind (instrumental) (3:16)
Review: Neibiss and Pasokon Ongaku Club's collaborative single 'Flow Ya Mind' is a superb new single from an Osaka-based label themed around "baths." This marks their second release following 2022's On Rei/Froject A by EVISBEATS and Nagipan. The track combines a solid bassline with an ambient backdrop, snappy Amen breakbeats and Neibiss' relaxed, bath-themed rap. The song's calming composition is said to suit any hot spring setting and we can't disagree. Mastered by Naoya Tokuno and with artwork by Neibiss' rafitt, the is a fine new 7".

Love Is The Message (feat Nipsey Hussle, Planet Asia, Louis King & Snoop Dogg) (5:04)
Review: Hip-hop icon Rakim is son to return with a new album G.O.D.'S NETWORK (REB7RTH), but before that come some teaser singles and this one of them. 'Be Ill' perfectly sets the tone with Rakim's raw rhymes and head-nodding production complemented by standout features from Kurupt and Masta Killa. On 'Love Is The Message', the American great slows it down with soulful vibes and enlists the late Nipsey Hussle plus Planet Asia, Snoop Dogg and more for a heartfelt anthem. This single and the ensuing LP celebrates Rakim's enduring hunger as an emcee and producer and proves that many years after he made his mark, he still has the skills to pay the bills.

This Canadian hip-hop classic from the late '90s is paired with 'Gunfinga' featuring Kardinal Offishall on the B-side. Both tracks, produced by DJ Kemo, highlight the golden era of Canadian hip-hop and come housed in original artwork by Dedos that reflects the vibrant spirit of the time. Review: The so-far superb Boom Bap Classics label kicks on with a sixth fantastic slab of old school gold. This time once more they offer up underground 90s rap gems in the form of a brilliant neck-snapper from West Coast lyrical don Rasco. His 'Unassisted' is a widely respected cut that finds favour with heads and backpackers and turntablists alike thanks to its hard bars and chord-laced bumping beats. Review: GAMM is one of those labels that is super consistent in everything they put out. It ranges in genre, era and mood, but always nails what it aims for. Originally from Canada and now based in the UK, rework specialist Jim Sharp is next to contribute to that fine canon and does so by showing his unique talent for elevating soul, funk and hip-hop with a masterful touch. This is his debut on the label and it sees him transform Anthony Hamilton's original into an irresistibly funky, soulful groove on the A-side. Meanwhile, the B-side delivers a deep, seamless blend of Donny Hathaway and Common and results in a stellar hip-hop and soul fusion.

It also does what all good hip-hop does in that it manages to blend contemporary style with elements of the classic sound without being too much of an old-school homage. The stone cold classic, vibe-drenched 'All Time Great' has drums and beats made by Amazing Maze, with extra cuts by DJ Danetic layered in next to dreamy pads and warm, lazy bass. With production by West Coast heavyweights The Alchemist and Evidence, these tracks highlight the group's raw, uncompromising lyricism on a nice coloured slab of wax. Review: This renowned hip-hop producer (and also half of Atmosphere) is a founding member of Rhymesayers Entertainment. His decades-spanning career includes work with MF DOOM, Brother Ali, Murs and more after he was raised in a military family with a deep love for records. Ant's eclectic influences shine in Collection of Sounds, a four-volume instrumental series that his instalment three here and has been carefully curated from his vast archive. It mixes up intimate, haunting tracks with expansive, venue-filling beats. Some compositions invite vocalists yet remain deeply personal and overall, rather than reinventing things, Ant reconfigures his past while staying true to his artistic roots.

Review: Freestyle Records reissues The Apples Kings a full decade and a half after its first release. This version has been fully remastered and re-cut for an even more dynamic sound to remind why the landmark album was so special. It was a first for the band who crafted it with specific collaborators in mind and worked with funk legend Fred Wesley and Israeli world music icon Shlomo Bar In fusing elements of The JB's funky foundations, soul, dub, and Middle Eastern influences, they cooked up a genre-defying mix filtered through The Apples' unique decks-horns-bass-drums lineup. These unmistakable, floor-shaking grooves are just as potent today as they were in 2010.

Review: "Danama" is a Bambara word meaning "trustworthy" that reflects the essence of Arat Kilo's fifth album, which was recorded in Spring 2024. The album embodies optimism, collective strength and cultural blending, while advocating confidence during these times which are so marred by wars, nationalism and environmental crises. Arat Kilo is France's leading Ethio-jazz ensemble and they take a fresh approach by experimenting with sound production by adding new instruments like synths, bass clarinet and Malian n'goni, alongside their signature grooves. These tunes are influenced by genres like Jersey club and 2-step and merge with Ethiopian jazz and global rhythms. Mamani Keita's poignant lyrics and social critique from Mike Ladd make this a resounding call for hope and unity.

Review: After receiving a Swedish GRAMMY nomination for her 2023 album Be Free and maintaining a busy tour schedule, trombonist, songwriter and producer Ebba decided to try and challenge jazz's rigid boundaries for her next project. The result is When You Know, a smoky, melancholic brew that swirls jazz, alternative r&b, indie, hip-hop and ambient sounds into something pleasingly fresh. Co-produced with Berlin-based producer Lucy Liebe, the album was recorded in a cabin outside her hometown during the harsh winter and reflects Ebba's direct, driven nature. It often moves into avant-garde territory but the vocal work on cuts like 'Did I Go?' mean it always makes and emotional impact, while lush beats on 'Open Your Eyes ' are perfect for summer and 'What I Want' is devastatingly intimate and honest.

Review: With 'breaking' making its debut in the 2024 Paris Olympics, it seems an apt time to go back to where it all began and showcase some of the music that first made break-dancers move in the early years of hip-hop culture. Soul Jazz Records clearly agrees, hence this two-disc retrospective of early 'breaker' favourites curated by Arthur Baker - a man who's productions and remixes soundtracked many dancefloor battles in the early 80s. It's a suitably strong selection all told, with dusty funk, soul and funk-rock favourites (Johnny Bristol, James Brown, The Jimmy Castor Bunch, Spanky Wilson) being joined by disco-funk jams (Herman Kelly and Life), extra-percussive workouts (Manu Dibango, Mongo Santamaria, Candido) and a smattering of key Baker productions (Afrika Bambaata and Soul Sonic Force's 'Planet Rock' and his own infectious 'Breakers Revenge').

Review: California-born singer-songwriter BANKS, aka Jillian Rose Banks, creates moody, alternative pop with hints of contemporary r&b adding extra depths. After emerging in the early 2010s, she gained a cross-genre following with her downtempo, alt-r&b style and her debut album, Goddess, earned critical acclaim and gold certification with hits like 'Before I Ever Met You' and 'Warm Water.' BANKS followed three more albums and now drops her fifth which is another subversive blend of all sound that have gone before with an evolved attitude and still a great number of hooky groves.

Review: 'Stand Together' by Beastie Boys is a signature high-energy track from their iconic album Check Your Head. It perfectly resents what the US disruptors were all about with its trademark fusion of hip-hop, punk and funk, explosive instrumentation and dynamic vocal delivery. It's also the name of this broadcast album which comes on yellow vinyl and is a recording of a live TV broadcast the group did back on September 19, 1992 from Kawasaki Citta Club in Kanagawa, Japan. Plenty of their jams of the time - 'Egg Man' and 'Shake Your Rump' being much loved fan favourites especially - feature here, capturing the band at a particularly fertile moment in their career.

Review: Blk Odyssy's third studio album 1-800 Fantasy, as any artist long player really should, marks a sonic shift. It takes him away from his dark r&b and G-funk blend to a brighter, more upbeat alternative sound. This concept album tells the coming-of-age story of a teenage boy in the 90s exploring love and lust. The 13 tracks include singles like 'Want You,' 'XXX' (feat. Wiz Khalifa), 'Stank Rose' (feat. It proves again he is a boundary-pushing artist.

Review: In 1993, Bangin' On Wax marked a pivotal moment in West Coast gangsta rap by managing to unite members of LA's infamous rival gangs-the Crips from Compton, Watts and Long Beach, and the Bloods from Inglewood and Los Angeles. The project aimed to channel gang tensions into music rather than violence with auditions selecting the best MCs for the album. Proceeds supported local schools and parks for children and now, 30 years later, this historic release returns for Black Friday as a double vinyl set featuring tracks previously exclusive to CD, all pressed on red and blue vinyl. A superb work in more ways than one.

Review: Kurtis Walker, known as Kurtis Blow, made history as the first rapper signed to a major US record label, Mercury, in 1979. His debut single, the fun and festive 'Christmas Rappin',' sold nearly half a million copies. It was followed by 'The Breaks,' the first rap single to go Gold with over a million copies sold. His self-titled debut album in 1980 led to international performances in Europe and Japan and helped to spread hip-hop globally. Kurtis Blow's prolific career includes fifteen albums and hits like 'America,' 'If I Ruled The World' (famously later sampled by The Fugees and Nas), and collaborations with The Fat Boys, Run D.M.C., Sheila E., and Kool & The Gang. This double vinyl collection rightly celebrates his influential legacy.

Review: Legendary LA rapper Blu's Good To Be Home was his first-ever double album when it originally dropped back in 2014. A decade on the record, which features a host of West Coast hip-hop luminaries (such as The Roots, Alchemist, Lupe Fiasco, B.o.B., Madlib, Aloe Blacc, ) remains an unapologetic celebration of LA and its musical culture. "This is my most defining record ever," said Blu at the time and it truly is a record packed with all killer and no filler. This version on Nature Sounds comes across glorious double gatefold vinyl.

He has a love of the great Joao Gilberto and armed with that and a worm out MPC he set to work, laying down tropical beats and sunny melodies. The result became an instant classic and spawned a number of tunes that went on to pick up more than a million streams. It's a record that excites the imagination as well as warming the soul and this version comes with superb original artwork designed by illustrator David Burnett on a lovely splatter-coloured vinyl inspired by its own cover.

Review: In the early 1990s as gangsta rap rose in popularity, KRS-One remained committed to socially conscious lyrics and the culminated in the hard-hitting 1992 album Sex and Violence. This fifth and final studio release from Boogie Down Productions, produced by KRS-One, Pal Joey, Kenny Parker, D-Square, and Prince Paul, delves into the darker aspects of American urban life. While singles like the intense 'Duck Down' and funky 'We In There' garnered attention, tracks such as 'Drug Dealer,' 'Ruff Ruff,' 'Questions and Answers,' and 'How Not To Get Jerked' stand out. Featuring an intro skit about a DJ's vinyl panic, this reissue by Get On Down and Sony Music's CERTIFIED brings the album back to vinyl, with a great splatter-coloured pressing.

Rooted in prog-rock grooves and boogie flair, the album explores romantic and reflective territory without losing the collective's playful spirit. On the album, which arrives as a special for this year's Record Store Day, James Di Salvio is joined by longtime collaborators and fresh talent alike to create a lush collaborative soundscape that's rich in emotion and rhythm. The tracks all exude soulful vocals, brass-laced arrangements and global sonic textures, which help to make The Garden is a mature yet adventurous chapter in BV3's musical journey.

Review: Following mesmerising Marseilles mutations from the likes of Syqulone, Kabylie Minogue and Lisa More, Cain ? Muchi return to Gros:Oeuvre with their remarkable debut album. A heady tagine of grime, beats, techno, global bass and contemporary electronica with a title that either refers to famed Moroccan popstar or, far more likely, relates to meaning as 'universe', Dounia is a beguiling clash of western electronics and eastern bars, lyrics, and vocal harmonies. Fractured and macabre throughout from the distorted hardcore bass highs of 'J'wadi' to disarming vocal cries of 'Majdouba' this post grime, pre apocalypse opus is a trip from edge to edge.

Review: Carmike's sole album is a gritty masterpiece of "slithering nightmare raps" that was originally recorded amidst carjackings and robberies and very ably and aptly captures the raw chaos of its 1994 cassette release. Now officially reissued for the first time on LP, this cult classic is dark, haunting and unapologetically authentic as it embodies the turbulence of its time. Delivering a visceral listening experience that resonates decades later, this gem is the latest of a multi-LP series exploring Memphis's influential hip-hop history These distinctive and often brutal tracks helped reshape rap music and have to be heard by anyone who considers themselves in the know.

Review: Chase Atlantic's fourth album offers a more mature sound than previous LPs while exploring themes of loneliness, depression and fear. The title reflects the paradox of being in an ideal place yet feeling miserable and the music showcases the band's evolution into a fusion of pop, rock and r&b in their signature genre-defying style. The lead single quickly gained popularity by amassing millions of streams and views and follow-up 'Doubt It' continues the trend with addictive melodies and fresh sounds. Although Chase Atlantic pushes boundaries here, their original fans will still remain happy with the signature energy of this album.

The album showcases the French collective's signature style of blending diverse genres into something new and unusual but always groove driven and tracks like 'I've Got That Tune' and 'Miss Chang' combine smooth beats with global influences from reggae to jazz. They offer a rich, eclectic sound and the album's cinematic flair, catchy rhythms, and playful sampling make it a standout in Chinese Man's fine discography.
