Loose Fix (The Grid remix EOE edit) (6:24)
Loose Fix (The Gird remix) (7:49)
Loose Fit (Perfecto 12" mix) (6:14)
Review: 'Loose Fit' isn't always the first song name that springs to mind when thinking about the Happy Mondays, but the immediately identifiable opiate guitar riff is up there with the band's most memorable and infectious. A highlight of the group's third album, Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches, the track was already dancefloor ready before this pack of re-dos arrived on the scene. We're glad it did, though. Greg Wilson and Che Wilson open the scoring, keeping things thoroughly Manchester and acid-tinged, it's a trip through the blue lights and sweat of a warehouse at 2AM. The Grid's EOE Edit and subsequent Remix take the tempo down and the atmosphere deeper, almost druggier if that could humanly be possible given the wider context here. Topped off with a post-club overture in the form of the epic downbeat Perfecto version, and you might want to stick it in the shopping cart now.

When I Said Goodbye (4:11)
Review: Mayer Hawthorne's debut release hears a faithful reissue via Stones Throw. 'Just Ain't Gonna Work Out' was first released in 2008 as the first forerunner to the LP A Strange Arrangement, which was released the following year. Housed on a distinctively oblong, heart-shaped, red 7", the star track hears Hawthorne segue uncertainly from serenade to breakup song, and we're treated to his trademark croaky falsetto too; too nice to pass up. B-sider 'When I Said Goodbye' is a haunting soul reminiscence, giving barbershop harmonies laid down by a ghostly troupe, amid talk of shattered wills and wistful post-breakup apologies.

She Took You To Narnia (3:24)

Mondo Cane (4:22)
Review: Melbourne's Highschool (Luke Scott, Rory Trobbiani) continue to ride the wave of nostalgic post-punk, following an aesthetic pattern that has defined their work at least since 2020's initial run of singles - theirs is singular in its embrace of lo-fi and an unusual mixing approach, through which the lyrical content only barely pokes through a half-remembered smog (we love it). Now, 'Accelerator' comes as their first mini-album/EP, their second diversion via PIAS; the five-tracker meditates on everything from melancholic summer months ('August 19') to fantasy recollections ('She Took You To Narnia') to UFO religions ('Heaven's Gate'), nailing something between the washed-out but no less festival-ready riffs of Beach House and the laconic edge of Double Virgo.

Yeah X 3 (The Vendetta Suite Reason To live mix)
Review: Yeah X 3, the latest single from David Holmes and Raven Violet's album Blind On A Galloping Horse, diverges from the overtly political themes of the record, instead offering a personal revelation. Featuring remixes by Panda Bear and Sonic Boom, as well as The Vendetta Suite's Gary Irwin, the single showcases diverse experimental approaches. For the A-side, the remixes are atmospheric and heady, creating a euphoric feeling with your head in the clouds. The second remix being the more beat forward version. For the B-side, massive amounts of sound heavily affected the remixes processing. The first being more of an ambient version while the last version is more straightforward and radio friendly. If you like the original song, then these versions will sit alongside them very well.

Hot Water Music - "Undertow" (2:43)
Review: A 12" split meeting of the minds between two equally iconic alt rock punk-lifers, this EP brings together Gainesville, Florida's Hot Water Music and New York City's Quicksand (brainchild of Gorilla Biscuits hardcore hero and Rival Schools emo-grunge auteur Walter Schreifels), covering each other's classic tracks with renditions of 'Fazer' from the Quicksand 1993 debut LP Slip and 'Free Radio Gainesville' off of Hot Water Music's 1999 third full-length No Division. Filling out the tracklist are the unreleased 'Supercollider' which marks the first new cut of Quicksand material since 2021's Distant Populations, and the b-side 'Undertow', originally recorded during sessions from Hot Water Music's latest 2024 LP Vows. With simple cover art featuring Hot Water Music's Chuck Ragan on one side, and Quicksand's Alan Cage on the other, it perfectly summarises this playful, mutual celebration of one another's work, some new, some old, all great.

Michael Hurley - "Jane" (3:55)
The Range Rats - "Go My Way" (2:33)
Review: Under a full moon to commemorate Portland's official holiday on their first Dead Moon Night, Mike Lastra recorded Michael Hurley play 'Jane' live at Portland City Hall in 2017. He performed, rather wittily, this cover of Portland Oregon Dead Moon's 1991 release to the most well attended non protest event in the history of the hall. Hurley, American "outsider folk" singer-songwriter, guitarist, banjo and fiddle player, and part of the Greenwich Village folk music scene of the 1960s and 70s is not only known for his iconoclastic songs, but also his cartoons and paintings, here illustrating the single's cover. The B Side 'Go My Way' features an unreleased Range Rats track from 1986 recorded at home by Fred Cole, Toody Cole and Rolly (their Roland drum machine), covered paradoxically by Portland's own Dead Moon in 2004, giving a comforting circularity to this limited 7" on Mississippi US, a label that prides itself in supporting artists and their families when crafting ethical and respectful releases of previously overlooked music. So, if you're into the Appalatian folk troubadour tradition with an undertone of irony that has a bluesy edge, you'll love this.

Review: The Moon and the Melodies, a remarkable collaboration between Cocteau Twins and ambient pioneer Harold Budd, remains a standout achievement in both artists' repertoires. First released in 1986, this enchanting album is now receiving a well-deserved vinyl reissue, meticulously remastered by Robin Guthrie from the original tapes. This album is a stunning fusion of the Cocteau Twins' signature dreamlike atmospheres with Budd's elegant, improvisational piano, resulting in a listening experience that is both expansive and deeply personal. The blending of Elizabeth Fraser's ethereal vocals, seamlessly intertwined with Guthrie's luminous guitar work and Raymonde's resonant bass, creates a sound that is both distinct and evocative. The album effortlessly balances vocal tracks with instrumentals, each adding to its rich and diverse sonic palette. This reissue offers a chance to rediscover a defining moment in the evolution of dream pop and ambient music. The Moon and the Melodies continues to stun audiences. This CD edition is the perfect vehicle to an ethereal beauty of the highest order.

Review: The Moon and the Melodies, a collaboration between Cocteau Twins and ambient pioneer Harold Budd, stands as a unique gem in both artists' discographies. Originally released in 1986, this ethereal album is now being reissued on vinyl, remastered from the original tapes by Robin Guthrie. Unlike anything else the Cocteau Twins ever produced, this record blends their dreamlike soundscapes with Budd's serene, improvisational piano work. The result is an atmospheric journey, at once intimate and expansive. Tracks like 'Sea, Swallow Me' shine with Elizabeth Fraser's otherworldly vocals, intertwined with Guthrie's shimmering guitar and Raymonde's grounding bass, creating a sound that feels both familiar and entirely unique. Instrumentals like 'Memory Gongs' and 'The Ghost Has No Home' highlight Budd's delicate piano, enhanced by the band's signature ambient textures. The album is a study in contrasts, vocal tracks sit alongside instrumentals, each contributing to a cohesive yet diverse listening experience. For fans, this reissue is a chance to revisit a pivotal moment in the evolution of dream pop and ambient music. The album's enduring appeal is evident in its continued influence in social media. The Moon and the Melodies remains a shining light that can happen when artists from different realms come together to create something truly timeless.

Review: In 2018, Half Alive had a dream breakthrough. Their indie pop single 'Still Feel' and the accompanying high-end choreography-heavy video earned such a buzz that it landed them a record deal with RCA, where they went on to release two albums. Now signed to Virgin, their third album sees the California band deliver a multifaceted pop record that reflects the way we have boundless access to music this century so we're increasingly unconstrained when it comes to genre. 'Bleed It Out' blends throbbing techno bass with bleeping synths and guitars twisted to sound like synths as singer Josh Taylor hits falsetto notes with aplomb. The catchiest number here is the opening cut, 'All My Love', thanks to its banging chorus. It shows the band have a real gift for uplifting daytime radio hits. Meanwhile, 'Songs' has an Andrew Bird appeal with a stunning tender vocal and 'Persona' shows their knack for pop punk, with a tight drum performance.

Review: Californian trio Half Alive first grabbed attention in 2018 with their slick synth-influenced power pop single 'Still Feel'. It came with a well-choreographed video that has now been watched more than 80 million times. Showing their initial success is no fluke, they are now onto their third major label studio album. This album delves into some intimate emotions and thrives in its post-genre approach, although if you have the likes of Phoenix, OK Go in your collection, their often tender yet sprightly indie pop will likely appeal. 'All My Love' is an earworm big on hooks and a massive chorus. 'Sophie's House' is nu-disco joy, with a propulsive groove that provides an almost spiritually uplifting backing to the choir-like vocal. Elsewhere, 'Automatic' has pop punk edge - there's an aggression to it that reflects this increasingly popular group's chameleonic appeal.

Review: The sixth studio album from Half Waif aka. Nandi Rose, See You At The Maypole, hears the musician process loss, motherhood and miscarriage through 17 lissome songs of graceful, chin-up synthetics and indie spoken word. These tracks were originally intended as a departure from her earlier, darker works; the mood is timely autumnal, literally and figuratively turning new yet browned leaves; despite the electronically inflected and modern buzzing feel of 'Heartwood' and 'Ephemeral Being', all tracks were composed in a small cabin overlooking a luscious and rain-rippled pond, as part of a solo retreat in the Catskill Mountains in New York. And yet despite its singular locality, Half Waif commands a stylistic range that is unsettled as it is expansive, weaving between unseelie autotune, bracken textures and rustling melancholia.

Review: Originally formed in 2000 in Middletown, Connecticut, the duo of Dan Barrett and Tim Macuga, better known as Have A Nice Life are one of the earliest instances of a truly internet-based underground band. Using primitive platforms to easily distribute early material, by the time their opus Deathconsciousness arrived in 2008, they had already amassed a devout following which was amplified by the debut album's crushing marrying of distorted, harsh shoegazing, blackened atmospherics, nauseating drone and industrial post-punk. Avid fans would begin to track down sporadic demo versions and outtakes from the record spread out across the digital landscape and compile the cuts onto an unofficial bootleg titled Voids, which would later be released on limited cassette with the pair's blessing. Courtesy of The Flenser, and following last year's remastered streaming release, Voids finally comes home to vinyl with its first official pressing over a full decade on from inception, and expands the original compilation to include alternative, raw, lo-fi, otherworldly renditions of material from their two subsequent LPs The Unnatural World and Sea Of Worry.

Review: It's album number three from Maya Hawke, daughter of Hollywood veteran Ethan, herself both an actress, a singer, musician and songwriter. Signed to New York indie Mom + Pop Music, which has offered a home to artists such as Alicia Keys, Tom Morello, Porter Robinson, and Tycho, among others, the pedigree of the imprint speaks volumes about Hawke's prowess in the studio. Landing late-May 2024, Chaos Angel sees the woman up top reunite with regular collaborators Christian Lee Hutson, Benjamin Lazar Davis and Will Graefe, names some will be familiar with from preceding LP, Moss. A warm, swoon-y trip into soft pop-rock, lyrically it's as sweet as it is reflective and heartfelt, while musically things range from twee folk-leaning chart stuff through to rawer garage guitar stylings.

Review: The ongoing success of the musical showcasing his work, the terrific (and very Sheffield-centric) Standing At The Sky's Edge, has done much to remind listeners of Richard Hawley's qualities as a songwriter. He's genuinely one of Britain's best of the last few decades, though the varied ways in which those are presented has not always gone down well with listeners. On In This City They Call You Love - another reference to beloved Sheffield - Hawley returns to the smooth, string-laden sound which marked out his most commercially successful album, Coles Corner. His voice - deep, rich and at this point bordering iconic - naturally takes centre stage on a set packed with touching and thoughtful ballads. It's a winner, but then the majority of his albums are.

Review: Gemma Hayes is a Mercury Prize-nominated singer-songwriter and this is her long-awaited sixth album, Blind Faith. Throughout the record, Hayes explores themes of longing, empowerment, freedom, and repression in this deeply personal work and really encourages listeners to reflect on her message and immerse themselves in its abstract lyrical nature. All of that fine word smithery is accompanied by tender guitar picking, haunting synths and swooning cello. This is Hayes's first album in a decade and is a remarkable one that shows plenty of subtle evolution in her style while also remaining relevant to older fans.

Review: While former New Young Pony Club member (and sometime Hot Chip collaborator) has devoted much of her career to DJing, her occasional solo musical releases have always been strong. Her solo debut LP, 2021's Private Sunshine, was excellent, but if anything this belated sophomore effort is even better. The album's genius lies in its consistency and the first signs of a smart, stylish, trademark boogie and proto-house influenced synth-pop sound, with extra authenticity provided by clear sonic nods to classic 1980s cuts from NYC and beyond. She's always been a talent, but it feels like a genuine crossover moment could be upon us - helped, no doubt, by the quality of the sassy 'Frequency', slow-motion jam 'Stop The Rain' and future dancefloor anthem 'In My Heart'.

Review: Michael Head's latest album, Loophole, is a poignant and introspective journey through six decades of life, love, and loss, masterfully captured in twelve evocative tracks. Backed by his loyal ensemble, The Red Elastic Band, Head weaves a tapestry of memories and emotions, inviting listeners to reminisce alongside him. The album's lead single, 'Shirl's Ghost,' sets the tone with its enchanting Spanish horns, a signature element of Head's musical style. As the opening track, it immediately draws listeners into Head's world, where flickering scenes from his life unfold with vivid clarity. 'Toxteth Ghost Story,' another standout track, showcases Head's storytelling strength as he delves into the haunting echoes of his past. Throughout the album, Head's lyrics are imbued with nostalgia and reflection, painting a rich portrait of his experiences and influences. Produced by Bill Ryder-Jones, co-founder of The Coral, Loophole boasts a sound that is both timeless and contemporary. The Red Elastic Band's instrumentation is lush and dynamic, providing the perfect backdrop for Head's emotive vocals. As Head prepares to release his 11th studio album, it's clear that his creative fire burns brighter than ever. With Loophole, he proves once again why he's regarded as one of the greatest living songwriters, captivating listeners with his timeless melodies and heartfelt storytelling.

Review: Something of a Liverpool legend, Michael Head's musical story stretches right back to the punk era. Since then he's had spells in The Dance Party, Shack, the Pale Fountains and Egypt For Now. For the last five years, he's fronted The Red Elastic Band, offering up a handful of studio albums and a couple of excellent live sets. Loophole arrives just before the release of his autobiography and largely features reflective, wistful and thoughtful songs spiced up by expansive arrangements, sinewy strings and - more occasionally - heady horns. The plentiful highlights include the cheery jauntiness of 'Ciao Ciao Bambino', the lilting, slow-motion headiness of 'Shirl's Ghost', the semi-acoustic, Latin-tinged loveliness of 'Connemara', and the bluesy late 60s Beatles flex of 'The Human Race'.

It has been produced by longtime collaborator Dan Carey and fuses the driving, motorik energy of Depeche Mode with PJ Harvey's sharp lyrical prowess, and is finished off with the offbeat rhythms of dance-punk favourites LCD Soundsystem. Review: Following on from 2023's acclaimed debut full-length All Gas No Brakes, Bristolian noise-punks Heavy Lungs return with the definition of an antithetical sophomore LP with Caviar. Clocking in at under 30 minutes (significantly less than their initial outing) and recorded live in dingy church rehearsal spaces to capture the unhinged intensity of their live performances, this is the sound of a band vehemently disinterested with mainstream appeal, exposure or playing the game by any terms apart from their own. While vocalist Danny Nedelko would be the named subject of one of the biggest singles from fellow Bristol natives Idles' 2018 breakout second album Joy As An Act Of Resistance, where his peers have expanded their sound and embraced myriads of melody, Heavy Lungs are poignantly going the opposite route, full speed towards oblivion with only chaos and anarchy on their collective minds.

Following the success of his Underrated Cuts From A Misunderstood Decade comes this follow up, which he has annotated track-by-track.From Roy Harper and Sandy Denny's folky shenangans to Status Quo. ZZ Top and proto-punks Eddie & The Hot Rods, this is Hepworth making a case that the 70s remains unmatched for music invention, and a strong case it is too.

Review: Hankerers after 90s band musicians turned Y2K solo electronica artists will water at the mouth at the first play of this one. Her Space Holiday was the first-time solo alias of Marc Bianchi, the American indietronic musician known for his membership of the bands Indian Summer and Calm. Turning his hand to solo soundcraft at the turn of the millennium, and releasing under Skylab and Tiger Style - the latter of which saw to the release of the first edition of this record, albeit with a different sleeve design - Bianchi's solo output would echo the post-hardcore humours that characterised his group work, except for the fact that it would also somewhat electronify them into contrition, resulting in every logical conclusion from lasery broadcast neofolk ('Snakecharmer') to anxiolytic hyperballad emo ('Through The Eyes Of A Child').

Review: Hips & Makers takes us back to a great time for independent guitar music. The debut album from Kirstin Hersh is deceptively quiet and unarguably powerful, predominantly made up of acoustic numbers that really speak to how strong the rock-folk crossover was at this point. Adding the inimitable voice of REM's Michael Stipe to the opening track, 'Your Ghost', only accentuates this. A million miles from 'twee', while things here are often set at a volume that encourages reflection, in other moments they explode into an earthen celebration of passion and energy. Almost carnal. 'A Loon' and its campfire yelps and whoops, 'Close Your Eyes' with its rousing chorus invoking resilience and resistance. Even the sparseness of 'The Letter' makes a huge impact.

Review: Danish electronic pop act Hess Is More's CaeKE marks a return to pop's borderlands after detours into orchestral and experimental sounds. Minimalist and mellow, the new album eschews sprawling ensembles for a DIY space of piano, drum machines, and vintage synths all of which frame Hess' wandering voice with eccentric poetry. Balancing maturity with childlike curiosity tracks like 'I Love My Life... Again and Again' exhibit a subversive lightheartedness amid mellow existentialism. The album is a reflection on fatherhood and life's changes since the early 00s that finds Hess embracing a new melody-one that harmonises seriousness with carefreeness, introspection with outward expression.

Review: First released in October 1983, a stunning debut that shows Heyward's songwriting finesse and pop sensibility post-Haircut 100. Produced by the legendary Geoff Emerick, the album merges bright melodies with sophisticated arrangements, resulting in a collection of timeless tracks that solidified Heyward as a solo force. Featuring hits like 'Take That Situation', 'Whistle Down the Wind', 'Blue Hat for a Blue Day' and 'On a Sunday', the album exudes charm and emotional depth. Heyward's knack for combining upbeat rhythms with introspective lyrics shines throughout, creating a balance of warmth and wistfulness that resonates decades later. This new edition, mastered by Barry Grint at AIR Mastering, benefits from the precision of half-speed mastering. The process enhances groove detail and stereo imaging, bringing a natural clarity and vibrancy to every note. Pressed on 180-gram heavyweight vinyl, the reissue is presented in its original gatefold sleeve, complete with an obi strip, a poly-lined inner sleeve and a two-page insert. North of a Miracle is more than a nostalgic revisitithis beautifully remastered edition breathes new life into a classic.

Review: Former Soup Dragons man Hifi Sean (real name Sean Dickson) seems to have found a musical soulmate in David McAlmont. The pair have already impressed via a pair of well-regarded albums and here drop a third collaborative full-length - barely six months after its predecessor, Daylight, appeared in stores. Designed as a kind of flip side to that set - a loosely conceptual musical night drive from dusk 'til dawn - Twilight cannily combines slow, soft-touch grooves, dreamy textures, bubbly electronics, strobe-lit synths and McAlmont's honeyed vocals to great effect. The plentiful highlights include Blessed Madonna collaboration 'The Comedown', the tactile bliss of 'Goodbye Drama Queen', the huggable wooziness of 'High With You' and the heartfelt sweep of 'Star'.

More synth-heavy and strobe-lit than its predecessor, the album sees the effortlessly soulful McAlmont add his honeyed vocals to backing tracks rich in soft-touch grooves, dreamy textures, bubbly electronics and strobe-lit melodic motifs. This limited, deluxe edition is the one to grab if you can; aside from being pressed to colourful purple vinyl, it also comes bundled with a single-track seven-inch flexi-disc (containing a fine alternate dub mix of 'Driftaway') and an autographed art print.

Review: Hawaii, released in 1996 by The High Llamas, is a celebrated album that showcases Sean O'Hagan's intricate arrangements and homage to the lush sounds of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys. This deep dive reveals O'Hagan's journey from his early days in Microdisney to forming The High Llamas, highlighting albums like Santa Barbara and Gideon Gaye. Hawaii features 29 tracks blending Moog, banjo, strings, and brass, creating a musical paradise. It recapturing the charm of the 60s pop era, with The Irish Times describing it as a tribute to when popular music was genuinely popular. Despite being somewhat elusive on vinyl, the album still managed to breach the UK Albums Chart, landing at No. 62. O'Hagan's influences from various genres, including orchestral pop and exotic sounds, are apparent, as he sought to push musical boundaries and create something fresh, setting the stage for a rich legacy in modern pop music. This reissue makes this impressive release available again.

Review: It's been a massive 2024 for chamber pop heroes The High Llamas. There's been nothing but crickets since 2016's Here Come The Rattling Trees. Now all-of-a-sudden they're creating queues at the pressing plant with six newly-printed albums released via the Drag City label. In addition to releasing one of the best albums of their oeuvre with their new album, Hey Panada, they're releasing all five of their out of print 90s albums. Of which this album, originally released in 1998, is them experiment with beats and synth and splicing that into their harmonic Beach Boys-esque DNA. It's an album that radiates with blissed-out psychedelia and playful musical contrasts and lush harmony. You can't go wrong here.

Review: Avant pop icons The High Llamas' founder Sean O'Hagan put his band on the back burner for a bit recently but by no means stood still. He's kept busy with his work as a film composer and arranger, even doing the score for Owen Kline's film, Funny Pages. But 2024 has seen a resurgence: the first High Llamas album since 2016 was released released and it was followed by a huge reissue announcement. Drag City is reissuing their five out of print 90s album on vinyl and Snowbug is the underdog within the collection but an underrated gem. It's O'Hagan's take on all manner of world-folk, 60s Ethiopian music and classic Brazilian pop. O'Hagan, who is a recording member of Stereolab, had an impressive cast of top players join in for the sessions. However, guest vocalists Laetitia Sadier and Mary Hansen from Stereolab are particularly noteworthy, bringing a bit of voodoo to the breezy morning-after vibe.

Review: Originally released in 1998 this remix showcases some of the most creative digital music masters of the day: Mouse On Mars, Jim O'Rourke, Kid Loco, Schneider TM, Stock, Hausen & Walkman, Cornelius and The High Llamas themselves. Whilst the influence of the Beach Boys on Sean O'Hagan's band is well documented, less is noted about the influence of Krautrock on them. This album serves to highlight that aspect of their sound. The Schneider TM remix is particularly exciting as no one quite sounds like Schneider - he brings a dark tone and makes beats in unorthodox ways that sound entirely original and hypnotic. It's also great to see experimentalist Jim O'Rourke on here - he and O'Hagan have contributed to a Stereolab album together and maintain their fertile creative kinship. Cornelius' remix of 'Homespin rerun', meanwhile, goes in an exotica direction and brings a lot of energy to the table, whilst keeping things left-field and off-kilter.

Opening with 'Salt In Our Wounds,' the album showcases a perfect blend of slow build-ups and heavier choruses, featuring a cool solo. 'Heartache Every Moment,' a single, grows on you with its poignant lyrics. 'Pretending' stands out with memorable lyrics and an impressive solo. Although 'Close To The Flame' and 'Beautiful' are slower tracks, they add depth to the album. 'Don't Close Your Heart' and 'Love You Like I Do' close the album on a high note that create a lasting impact on the listeners.

Originally made in 2001, album opens with 'Salt In Our Wounds,' a track that skillfully balances slow verses with a heavier chorus, featuring a solid solo. 'Heartache Every Moment,' a single, initially took time to grow on listeners but is appreciated for its memorable lyrics. 'Lose You Tonight' offers a unique intro with a bass line and hawk-like screeches, while 'In Joy And Sorrow,' another single, showcases Ville Valo's soothing vocals and a captivating guitar riff. 'Pretending,' a fan favorite, features thoughtful lyrics and an impressive solo. 'Please Don't Let Go' and 'Don't Close Your Heart' provide upbeat and positive vibes, the latter seamlessly transitioning into the next track. 'Love You Like I Do' closes the album on a dark, powerful note with its organ-like instrumentation and deep vocals. Overall, Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights remains one of HIM's most important albums.

After the emotional turbulence of 2020, which included the breakup of his band Holy Hive and the end of a long-term relationship, Homer sought help and poured his journey into music. The album's first track, 'Now That It's Over' is a powerful reflection on resilience, with haunting vocals by Hether. Formed by core members George Mitchell, Matt Peel, Josh Lewis, and Imi Holmes, the Leeds-based collective embodies the spirit of true collaboration, merging influences from UK bass, garage, shoegaze, and ambient styles into a seamless tapestry of sound. The first single 'Measure Me' alongside the evocative 'No Right 2 Love', delve into a dreamscape of lost connections and emotional turmoil, encouraging personal interpretation of its themes. As the band describes, creating this album felt like passing the aux cable at an afterparty, with each member contributing their unique influences while remaining unbound by genre constraints. U R HERE is a reflection of a world in flux, delivering an exhilarating and introspective take on club music that resonates deeply with the psychological landscape of modern life. With its vibrant soundscapes and fluid arrangements, this debut promises an exciting journey into self-acceptance and creative freedom. Review: This is The Horrors' first album since 2017's, V, which was recorded at Paul Epworth's church studios in Crouch End, North London and one of the best albums of that year. There's been some personnel changes since then: Faris Badwan (lead vocals), Rhys Webb (bass) and Joshua Hayward (guitar) have shed two members and they are now joined by Amelia Kidd (keys) and drummer Jordan Cook, who is well known on the London indie scene for having been the drummer of rock group Telegram. Having to make line-up changes plus follow-up an album as strong as V is a challenge, but one that they've taken in their stride. For this, their first in seven years, they sound like a band on their way to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Some bands come and go like fashion, but the really, really great bands stick around. Recorded in Los Angeles and Tottenham, it's a darkly atmospheric feast for the ears, with singles 'The Silence That Remains' and 'Trial By Fire' sure to blow the ceiling off any venue they play. This is going to be an early contender for best album of 2025.

Review: Despite forming as recently as 2019 and signing with Matador in merely 2021, Horsegirl are hitting their stride, clocking up some top tier collaborations and endorsements from esteemed elders of the indie rock community. To record this album, which is the follow-up to their 2022 debut, they headed to Wilco's studio in Chicago and had none other than Welsh musician Cate Le Bon produce it. The result has been less Breeders-esque grunge saturation and an embracing of bright, clear sonic territories which brings them closer towards The Clean-esque jangle pop sound - it massively suits them. And they've added violin and synths to their guitar-y core which gives them a new dimension and more compelling arrangements than ever before.

Review: Probably the coolest band in Chicago right now, Horsegirl have made an album of quietly tempered indie-pop gems up there with the likes of the Vaselines, The Pastels and The Moldy Peaches. They had the fortune of having Cate Le Bon produce the album and the sound of Le Bon's jangly and melodic debut album certainly rubs off on it, too. '2468' blends orthodoxy with a trance-inducing wig-out. Elsewhere, the single 'Switch Over' features a gently propulsive beat played on a stylishly stripped-back drum kit and the interplay between melodies is as playful as it is mesmerising. They make it all sound so easy, but it's harder to play laid back and blase than it is to go full throttle. Hats off to them for nailing this.

Review: To mark their 40th anniversary, Hugo Largo is releasing a comprehensive collection that takes in their entire studio output, namely the albums Drum from 1988 and Mettle from 1989, as well as a full album of previously unreleased and live recordings titled Hugo Largo Unreleased and Live 1984-1991. These albums, which have long been out of print, are now being reissued with special essays from R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, who produced Drum, as well as contributions from Brian Eno and band member Tim Sommer. This complete collection celebrates the band's influential experimental sound and shows why they had such a lasting impact on the alternative scene.

Review: Rob Marshall's Humanist project returns with On the Edge of a Lost and Lonely World, an album that expands upon the acclaimed debut with a deeper exploration of its sonic landscape. Known for his work with Exit Calm and collaborations on Mark Lanegan's albums, Marshall emerges as a songwriter, composer, and producer with a distinctive vision. The album showcases a diverse cast of vocal talents, including Dave Gahan, Isobel Campbell, Ed Harcourt and others, each contributing to a rich blend of emotions and themes. While the debut album leaned heavily into gothic industrial tones, this sophomore effort broadens the palette to include moments of light and shade. From the feathery guitar washes reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine on 'Love You More' to the introspective musings captured in tracks like 'Holding Pattern' and 'The Immortal,' the album navigates through themes of isolation, loss, and introspection. The journey to this release was marked by personal and global challenges, including Marshall's battle with illness and the tragic loss of collaborator Mark Lanegan. Yet, these adversities seem to have fueled Marshall's artistic introspection, resulting in an album that resonates with emotional subtlety and depth. This album is profound exploration of life's existential questions through its nuanced compositions and poignant lyrics.
