Loose Fix (The Grid remix EOE edit) (6:24)
Loose Fix (The Gird remix) (7:49)
Loose Fit (Perfecto 12" mix) (6:14)
Review: 'Loose Fit' isn't always the first song name that springs to mind when thinking about the Happy Mondays, but the immediately identifiable opiate guitar riff is up there with the band's most memorable and infectious. A highlight of the group's third album, Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches, the track was already dancefloor ready before this pack of re-dos arrived on the scene. We're glad it did, though. Greg Wilson and Che Wilson open the scoring, keeping things thoroughly Manchester and acid-tinged, it's a trip through the blue lights and sweat of a warehouse at 2AM. The Grid's EOE Edit and subsequent Remix take the tempo down and the atmosphere deeper, almost druggier if that could humanly be possible given the wider context here. Topped off with a post-club overture in the form of the epic downbeat Perfecto version, and you might want to stick it in the shopping cart now.

When I Said Goodbye (4:11)
Review: Mayer Hawthorne's debut release hears a faithful reissue via Stones Throw. 'Just Ain't Gonna Work Out' was first released in 2008 as the first forerunner to the LP A Strange Arrangement, which was released the following year. Housed on a distinctively oblong, heart-shaped, red 7", the star track hears Hawthorne segue uncertainly from serenade to breakup song, and we're treated to his trademark croaky falsetto too; too nice to pass up. B-sider 'When I Said Goodbye' is a haunting soul reminiscence, giving barbershop harmonies laid down by a ghostly troupe, amid talk of shattered wills and wistful post-breakup apologies.

Review: Heartworms are brand new outfit releasing under Speedy Wunderground - one of the few contemporary imprints giving fresh faces a fighting chance. Their debut EP 'A Comforting Notion' embeds the dystopian vision of one Jojo Orme into our minds - the frontwoman is a grandiose performer, giving tired tropes of delicate female bandleaders a run for its money through means like gritty post-punk and dark synth instrumentation, and a macabre sense of humour. The band's name references a heart-defecting parasite that is commonly found in dogs and is spread through mosquito bites - but don't worry, this EP will make your heart feel nothing but joy (permitting, at least, that you're a fan of bleak music!)

Mondo Cane (4:22)
Review: Melbourne's Highschool (Luke Scott, Rory Trobbiani) continue to ride the wave of nostalgic post-punk, following an aesthetic pattern that has defined their work at least since 2020's initial run of singles - theirs is singular in its embrace of lo-fi and an unusual mixing approach, through which the lyrical content only barely pokes through a half-remembered smog (we love it). Now, 'Accelerator' comes as their first mini-album/EP, their second diversion via PIAS; the five-tracker meditates on everything from melancholic summer months ('August 19') to fantasy recollections ('She Took You To Narnia') to UFO religions ('Heaven's Gate'), nailing something between the washed-out but no less festival-ready riffs of Beach House and the laconic edge of Double Virgo.

Yeah X 3 (The Vendetta Suite Reason To live mix)
Review: Yeah X 3, the latest single from David Holmes and Raven Violet's album Blind On A Galloping Horse, diverges from the overtly political themes of the record, instead offering a personal revelation. Featuring remixes by Panda Bear and Sonic Boom, as well as The Vendetta Suite's Gary Irwin, the single showcases diverse experimental approaches. For the A-side, the remixes are atmospheric and heady, creating a euphoric feeling with your head in the clouds. The second remix being the more beat forward version. For the B-side, massive amounts of sound heavily affected the remixes processing. The first being more of an ambient version while the last version is more straightforward and radio friendly. If you like the original song, then these versions will sit alongside them very well.

Review: A 12" split meeting of the minds between two equally iconic alt rock punk-lifers, this EP brings together Gainesville, Florida's Hot Water Music and New York City's Quicksand (brainchild of Gorilla Biscuits hardcore hero and Rival Schools emo-grunge auteur Walter Schreifels), covering each other's classic tracks with renditions of 'Fazer' from the Quicksand 1993 debut LP Slip and 'Free Radio Gainesville' off of Hot Water Music's 1999 third full-length No Division. Filling out the tracklist are the unreleased 'Supercollider' which marks the first new cut of Quicksand material since 2021's Distant Populations, and the b-side 'Undertow', originally recorded during sessions from Hot Water Music's latest 2024 LP Vows. With simple cover art featuring Hot Water Music's Chuck Ragan on one side, and Quicksand's Alan Cage on the other, it perfectly summarises this playful, mutual celebration of one another's work, some new, some old, all great.

Michael Hurley - "Jane" (3:55)
The Range Rats - "Go My Way" (2:33)
Review: Under a full moon to commemorate Portland's official holiday on their first Dead Moon Night, Mike Lastra recorded Michael Hurley play 'Jane' live at Portland City Hall in 2017. He performed, rather wittily, this cover of Portland Oregon Dead Moon's 1991 release to the most well attended non protest event in the history of the hall. Hurley, American "outsider folk" singer-songwriter, guitarist, banjo and fiddle player, and part of the Greenwich Village folk music scene of the 1960s and 70s is not only known for his iconoclastic songs, but also his cartoons and paintings, here illustrating the single's cover. The B Side 'Go My Way' features an unreleased Range Rats track from 1986 recorded at home by Fred Cole, Toody Cole and Rolly (their Roland drum machine), covered paradoxically by Portland's own Dead Moon in 2004, giving a comforting circularity to this limited 7" on Mississippi US, a label that prides itself in supporting artists and their families when crafting ethical and respectful releases of previously overlooked music. So, if you're into the Appalatian folk troubadour tradition with an undertone of irony that has a bluesy edge, you'll love this.

Review: The Moon and the Melodies, a remarkable collaboration between Cocteau Twins and ambient pioneer Harold Budd, remains a standout achievement in both artists' repertoires. First released in 1986, this enchanting album is now receiving a well-deserved vinyl reissue, meticulously remastered by Robin Guthrie from the original tapes. This album is a stunning fusion of the Cocteau Twins' signature dreamlike atmospheres with Budd's elegant, improvisational piano, resulting in a listening experience that is both expansive and deeply personal. The blending of Elizabeth Fraser's ethereal vocals, seamlessly intertwined with Guthrie's luminous guitar work and Raymonde's resonant bass, creates a sound that is both distinct and evocative. The album effortlessly balances vocal tracks with instrumentals, each adding to its rich and diverse sonic palette. This reissue offers a chance to rediscover a defining moment in the evolution of dream pop and ambient music. The Moon and the Melodies continues to stun audiences. This CD edition is the perfect vehicle to an ethereal beauty of the highest order.

Review: The Moon and the Melodies, a collaboration between Cocteau Twins and ambient pioneer Harold Budd, stands as a unique gem in both artists' discographies. Originally released in 1986, this ethereal album is now being reissued on vinyl, remastered from the original tapes by Robin Guthrie. Unlike anything else the Cocteau Twins ever produced, this record blends their dreamlike soundscapes with Budd's serene, improvisational piano work. The result is an atmospheric journey, at once intimate and expansive. Tracks like 'Sea, Swallow Me' shine with Elizabeth Fraser's otherworldly vocals, intertwined with Guthrie's shimmering guitar and Raymonde's grounding bass, creating a sound that feels both familiar and entirely unique. Instrumentals like 'Memory Gongs' and 'The Ghost Has No Home' highlight Budd's delicate piano, enhanced by the band's signature ambient textures. The album is a study in contrasts, vocal tracks sit alongside instrumentals, each contributing to a cohesive yet diverse listening experience. For fans, this reissue is a chance to revisit a pivotal moment in the evolution of dream pop and ambient music. The album's enduring appeal is evident in its continued influence in social media. The Moon and the Melodies remains a shining light that can happen when artists from different realms come together to create something truly timeless.

The trio channel a Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac style of love song into a modern pop context that sounds as fresh as it does respectful to their influences. Furthermore, building on 2013's critically acclaimed 'Days Are Gone', their sophomore set proves that Haim's prowess as high calibre songwriters, vocalists and multi-instrumentalists continues to demand respect.

Featuring hit singles such as 'Falling', 'The Wire', and 'If I Could Change Your Mind', as well as a batch of funky remixes from the likes of Cyril Hahn and Giorgio Moroder, this 2xLP is the ultimate edition for fans of the Los Angeles sisters, who've gone on to collaborate with the likes of Vampire Weekend and star in Paul Thomas Anderson films in the decade since. Days Are Gone was one of those albums that was seemingly everywhere in 2013, and the staying power of these Californian soft-rock tinged pop bangers has aged like the snifters offered at a San Fernando Valley wine country tasting.

Review: In 2018, Half Alive had a dream breakthrough. Their indie pop single 'Still Feel' and the accompanying high-end choreography-heavy video earned such a buzz that it landed them a record deal with RCA, where they went on to release two albums. Now signed to Virgin, their third album sees the California band deliver a multifaceted pop record that reflects the way we have boundless access to music this century so we're increasingly unconstrained when it comes to genre. 'Bleed It Out' blends throbbing techno bass with bleeping synths and guitars twisted to sound like synths as singer Josh Taylor hits falsetto notes with aplomb. The catchiest number here is the opening cut, 'All My Love', thanks to its banging chorus. It shows the band have a real gift for uplifting daytime radio hits. Meanwhile, 'Songs' has an Andrew Bird appeal with a stunning tender vocal and 'Persona' shows their knack for pop punk, with a tight drum performance.

Review: Californian trio Half Alive first grabbed attention in 2018 with their slick synth-influenced power pop single 'Still Feel'. It came with a well-choreographed video that has now been watched more than 80 million times. Showing their initial success is no fluke, they are now onto their third major label studio album. This album delves into some intimate emotions and thrives in its post-genre approach, although if you have the likes of Phoenix, OK Go in your collection, their often tender yet sprightly indie pop will likely appeal. 'All My Love' is an earworm big on hooks and a massive chorus. 'Sophie's House' is nu-disco joy, with a propulsive groove that provides an almost spiritually uplifting backing to the choir-like vocal. Elsewhere, 'Automatic' has pop punk edge - there's an aggression to it that reflects this increasingly popular group's chameleonic appeal.

Review: The sixth studio album from Half Waif aka. Nandi Rose, See You At The Maypole, hears the musician process loss, motherhood and miscarriage through 17 lissome songs of graceful, chin-up synthetics and indie spoken word. These tracks were originally intended as a departure from her earlier, darker works; the mood is timely autumnal, literally and figuratively turning new yet browned leaves; despite the electronically inflected and modern buzzing feel of 'Heartwood' and 'Ephemeral Being', all tracks were composed in a small cabin overlooking a luscious and rain-rippled pond, as part of a solo retreat in the Catskill Mountains in New York. And yet despite its singular locality, Half Waif commands a stylistic range that is unsettled as it is expansive, weaving between unseelie autotune, bracken textures and rustling melancholia.

Review: French dream pop breakthrough Halo Maud follows up her debut record Je Suis Une Ile (I Am An Island) with her second ever LP, Celebrate, which lives up to its name in fantastic fashion. Evidently less introspective than her last, the sonic palette throughout this dozen sunbursts suggests Maud has found her inner John Donne; indeed, opener 'Terres Infinies' is a massive crasher of a three-pronged shoegaze, synthwave and art pop sensibility, and both sonically and titularly suggests a new, deterritorial antithesis to the first album's sense of introspection. Organic, well-rounded instrumentation hears Maud traverse infinite terrains of bright tambourines and detuned synths thereafter.

Review: Kicking off with recited verses from Romeo And Juliet and barely scaling the drama down from that point onward, 'Hopeless Fountain Kingdom' is a relentlessly far-reaching album from the Jersey born artist formerly known as Ashley Frangipane. Yet in a pop landscape increasingly dominated by radio-ready blandness and empty soundbites, these soul-searching and angst-ridden ditties bear genuine emotional heft to match their super-producer gloss, arriving at an arrestingly synth-driven sound more Depeche Mode than Ellie Goulding, and dissecting her trials and travails in a manner that suggests a fearless and feral talent built to last. A widescreen tour-de-force from a very 21st-century pop star.

Their collaboration, now crystallized under the name The Hard Quartet, promises a fresh take on rock 'n' roll, melding the familiar with the new and the melodic with the enigmatic. Each member brings a wealth of experience from their storied careers. Emmett Kelly is known for his work with The Cairo Gang and collaborations with Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Ty Segall. Stephen Malkmus, a cornerstone of Pavement and the Jicks, needs no introduction to indie rock fans. Matt Sweeney, whose work spans Chavez to Superwolves, and collaborations with Johnny Cash and Cat Power, adds further depth. Finally, Jim White, the drumming force behind Dirty Three and Xylouris White, rounds out this formidable lineup. Their self-titled debut, available in limited edition Coke Bottle Clear Vinyl, collects the combined genius of these four musicians, offering a sound that is both groundbreaking and timeless.

Since debuting in 2013, Mike Katz has released a lot of music under this alias, always flitting between interconnected styles (electronic disco, deep house, jazz-funk, nu-boogie, revivalist New Jersey garage and Italo-disco) without ever laying down an album of all-new music. Boy, then, is a significant milestone in the Melbourne producer's career and offers an exploration of what he calls "neurotic funk" - a boundary-blurring fusion of jammed-out analogue electronics and live instrumentation that draws on a multitude of musical styles without neatly sitting in any one pigeonhole.

Famously, most of the songs focus on love and relationships and were written while Harvey was living in New York City at the tail end of the '90s. It remains a fine album that has stood the test of time well, with highlights including soaring opener 'Big Exit', jangling sing-along 'A Place Called Home', the sparse and haunting 'Beautiful Feeling' and full-throttle, grunge-inspired rocker 'Kamikaze'.

Review: Polly Jean Harvey broke into the common conscious with her unique and individual approach to alternative rock, and she's managed to maintain that aural autonomy throughout a storied career that has simultaneously found favour in the musical mainstream and refused to stray far from the leftfield. A difficult balance to strike, this, her eighth solo studio album, is indicative of that point. There's nothing here not to enjoy, but there's very little here you could predict.

Not least given where it sits in her back catalogue. Production began as the seminal but decidedly hushed White Chalk was released, and this record couldn't be more different from the preceding LP. Doing away with introspect, for the most part anyway, and refocusing attention away from pianos, it's a rousing indie collection that further cements the artist as one of Britain's national treasures.

Review: You can never really understate the impact Polly Jean Harvey had when she landed on the UK music scene, and the radars of tastemakers like John Peel, in the early-1990s. Guitar tracks at the time were usually split into unashamedly lager-soaked upfront Britpop, or nihilistic and self-sabotaging grunge and metal from the US. PJ Harvey was neither, and on 'To Bring You My Love' she perfected a particularly UK take on heavy, darkroom rock.

Pressing play means stepping into a world where the blues can either be a sparse, pitch black tome ('To Bring You My Love') or stomping and sweat-soaked juggernaut ('Meet Ze Monsta'), and that's just referencing the first two songs. Compare either to the trip-hop infused downtempo melancholia of 'The Dancer', and it's pretty clear why this was one of the albums of its decade.

Is This Desire? (2:53)
Review: It has been said before that Polly Jean Harvey's 1998 album, Is This Desire, marked a watershed moment in her career. A veritable coming of age record that failed to match the commercial heights of To Bring You My Love, but was actually a far more complete and personal thing. Less angry than preceding efforts, it painted a more balanced and accurate portrait of an artist whose formative years were pockmarked with media analysis and criticism of her visible powerful attributes - sexuality and fury.

Coupled with the fact that Harvey has never been one to pander to scenes in the hope of top ten chart success, and you can only imagine how happy she was with the finished product. And all this is before we start banging on about the musicality, from title track's subtle, hushed baritone blues to the garage rock-out of 'A Perfect Day Elise'.

Review: I Inside the Old Year Dying is PJ Harvey's tenth studio long player but a first in some seven years. The last, The Hope Six Demolition Project, was a UK number one on the album charts and this one was again recorded with long-time creative collaborators John Parish and Flood. It is a vast sonic universe that is located "in a space between life's opposites, and between recent history and the ancient past." There is plenty of biblical imagery, Shakespearean references and lots of profound songwriting, as you would expect.

Review: PJ Harvey's ongoing vinyl reissue series has finally arrived at 2007's White Chalk, an album that at the time was thought of as something of a curveball from the West Country singer-songwriter. Unlike its predecessors, which were celebrated for their raw, fuzzy, stripped-back alt-rock sound, White Chalk emerged after Harvey decided to write an album of "piano songs" - despite having no experience playing the instrument herself. With Flood and John Parish handling production duties, the set's tracks were generally lighter and breezier sonically, with a little more polish and much more restricted use of electric guitar. Harvey's lyrics are as distinctive as ever, though, offering a clear contrast to the pastoral and oddly traditional feel of the music.

This deluxe reissue comes on 180gsm black vinyl and has plenty of alt, art and folk-rock goodness within from perennial favourite Polly Jean "PJ" Harvey. This reissue of her sixth album features brand new artwork with cover art that is in fact based on a drawing PJ Harvey has done herself. It has been freshly mastered for the occasion by Jason Mitchell at Loud Mastering and was overseen by frequent and ling time PJ-producer, John Parish.

Review: While it had only been a few months since the release of her 4 Track Demos project, when To Bring You My Love first arrived in 1994 it felt like it had been a long time coming. Taking elements that made her early studio efforts stand out - the twisted mania of Dry and the Patti Smith-esque agony of Rid of Me - here Polly Jean Harvey fully embraced a kind of pained grunge-blues.

The resulting brew is particularly potent. Whether you're listening to the hushed, mysterious groove of 'Working For The Man', 'Long Snake Moan''s dark metal edges, or the sparse, troubled and deeply pained anthem 'Teclo', everything here is clearly the work of a genius. A fact that rings particularly true given these stunning versions represent her work in its original demo form.

Review: Polly Jean Harvey is currently midway through an epic reissue series, delivering freshly re-mastered versions of numerous albums across a multitude of formats. The latest set to get a new vinyl pressing is 1993's "Rid of Me", which saw the celebrated singer-songwriter make her major label bow after years spent operating on small indie imprints. Widely considered one of Harvey's finest moments, the set was far more raw and aggressive than her previous work - despite using the same stripped-back line-up of musicians as its predecessor - with producer Steve Albini, famed for his work with the Pixies, conjuring a particularly "psychotic" sound (as its main protagonist has since called the album in interviews).

Review: We've been treated to reissues of everything else from PJ Harvey's spectacular catalogue, so it's only right we get a chance to savour the deeper cuts that shape out the persona of the high priestess of alternative rock. Gathering together an exhaustive 59 B sides, demos and previously unreleased tracks, this six-LP box set takes us into the heart of Polly Jean's writing process, showing the raw power in the songwriting when it's just her voice and an overdriven guitar, and showing us the broader possibilities of songs which didn't make the cut for the studio albums. This is a true treasure of music getting the authoritative release she deserves.

Review: The world was very different in 1992, but some of the greatest musical moments from that year stand the test of time. Just take Polly Jean Harvey's staggering debut - the making of a musical icon and one of the era's finest examples of songwriting. It still sounds exceptional and its messages still resonate, lifting the woke-washed veil of our age in one fell swoop, laying bare the fact that many toxic attitudes prevail. It's rock music, but that's hardly the point. What matters isn't so much what's being played, but how and what's being said. Delivered with an air of Pixies and nod to Patti Smith, written in the wake of a relationship imploding, our introduction to Harvey remains vital as ever. A refusal to accept simplistic, patriarchal views of womanhood and femininity, or indeed simplistic patriarchal views of anything, the record's razor sharp observations, cunning wit and deft ability to reference but feel original is remarkable.

Review: Once synonymous with bands such as The Lemonheads, Some Girls, and Blake Babies, Boston, USA singer-songwriter Juliana Hatfield has been there and done that as part of a group, with her own Juliana Hatfield Three setup, alongside Todd Philips and Dean Fisher, and in full-blown solo mode. And she continues to 'do it' very well indeed - How To Walk Away might be 17 years young in 2025, but her most recent original offerings, on 2021's Blood, proved there's no shortage of ideas still. As for How To Walk Away, this is Hatfield in her element. Emotional alternative rock in that way America has defined for the best part of four decades - left of centre yet accessible and destined for charts and soundtracks alike.

Review: Originally formed in 2000 in Middletown, Connecticut, the duo of Dan Barrett and Tim Macuga, better known as Have A Nice Life are one of the earliest instances of a truly internet-based underground band. Using primitive platforms to easily distribute early material, by the time their opus Deathconsciousness arrived in 2008, they had already amassed a devout following which was amplified by the debut album's crushing marrying of distorted, harsh shoegazing, blackened atmospherics, nauseating drone and industrial post-punk. Avid fans would begin to track down sporadic demo versions and outtakes from the record spread out across the digital landscape and compile the cuts onto an unofficial bootleg titled Voids, which would later be released on limited cassette with the pair's blessing. Courtesy of The Flenser, and following last year's remastered streaming release, Voids finally comes home to vinyl with its first official pressing over a full decade on from inception, and expands the original compilation to include alternative, raw, lo-fi, otherworldly renditions of material from their two subsequent LPs The Unnatural World and Sea Of Worry.

Review: It's album number three from Maya Hawke, daughter of Hollywood veteran Ethan, herself both an actress, a singer, musician and songwriter. Signed to New York indie Mom + Pop Music, which has offered a home to artists such as Alicia Keys, Tom Morello, Porter Robinson, and Tycho, among others, the pedigree of the imprint speaks volumes about Hawke's prowess in the studio. Landing late-May 2024, Chaos Angel sees the woman up top reunite with regular collaborators Christian Lee Hutson, Benjamin Lazar Davis and Will Graefe, names some will be familiar with from preceding LP, Moss. A warm, swoon-y trip into soft pop-rock, lyrically it's as sweet as it is reflective and heartfelt, while musically things range from twee folk-leaning chart stuff through to rawer garage guitar stylings.

Review: The ongoing success of the musical showcasing his work, the terrific (and very Sheffield-centric) Standing At The Sky's Edge, has done much to remind listeners of Richard Hawley's qualities as a songwriter. He's genuinely one of Britain's best of the last few decades, though the varied ways in which those are presented has not always gone down well with listeners. On In This City They Call You Love - another reference to beloved Sheffield - Hawley returns to the smooth, string-laden sound which marked out his most commercially successful album, Coles Corner. His voice - deep, rich and at this point bordering iconic - naturally takes centre stage on a set packed with touching and thoughtful ballads. It's a winner, but then the majority of his albums are.

Throughout the record, Hayes explores themes of longing, empowerment, freedom, and repression in this deeply personal work and really encourages listeners to reflect on her message and immerse themselves in its abstract lyrical nature. All of that fine word smithery is accompanied by tender guitar picking, haunting synths and swooning cello. This is Hayes's first album in a decade and is a remarkable one that shows plenty of subtle evolution in her style while also remaining relevant to older fans.

Review: While former New Young Pony Club member (and sometime Hot Chip collaborator) has devoted much of her career to DJing, her occasional solo musical releases have always been strong. Her solo debut LP, 2021's Private Sunshine, was excellent, but if anything this belated sophomore effort is even better. The album's genius lies in its consistency and the first signs of a smart, stylish, trademark boogie and proto-house influenced synth-pop sound, with extra authenticity provided by clear sonic nods to classic 1980s cuts from NYC and beyond. She's always been a talent, but it feels like a genuine crossover moment could be upon us - helped, no doubt, by the quality of the sassy 'Frequency', slow-motion jam 'Stop The Rain' and future dancefloor anthem 'In My Heart'.

The Liverpudlian singer-songwriter is back with a new long player called Dear Scott, which finds him and his stretchy backing band on stellar form as they run through the likes of lead single 'Newby Street'. Review: Michael Head's latest album, Loophole, is a poignant and introspective journey through six decades of life, love, and loss, masterfully captured in twelve evocative tracks. Backed by his loyal ensemble, The Red Elastic Band, Head weaves a tapestry of memories and emotions, inviting listeners to reminisce alongside him. The album's lead single, 'Shirl's Ghost,' sets the tone with its enchanting Spanish horns, a signature element of Head's musical style. As the opening track, it immediately draws listeners into Head's world, where flickering scenes from his life unfold with vivid clarity. 'Toxteth Ghost Story,' another standout track, showcases Head's storytelling strength as he delves into the haunting echoes of his past. Throughout the album, Head's lyrics are imbued with nostalgia and reflection, painting a rich portrait of his experiences and influences. Produced by Bill Ryder-Jones, co-founder of The Coral, Loophole boasts a sound that is both timeless and contemporary. The Red Elastic Band's instrumentation is lush and dynamic, providing the perfect backdrop for Head's emotive vocals. As Head prepares to release his 11th studio album, it's clear that his creative fire burns brighter than ever. With Loophole, he proves once again why he's regarded as one of the greatest living songwriters, captivating listeners with his timeless melodies and heartfelt storytelling.

Review: Something of a Liverpool legend, Michael Head's musical story stretches right back to the punk era. Since then he's had spells in The Dance Party, Shack, the Pale Fountains and Egypt For Now. For the last five years, he's fronted The Red Elastic Band, offering up a handful of studio albums and a couple of excellent live sets. Loophole arrives just before the release of his autobiography and largely features reflective, wistful and thoughtful songs spiced up by expansive arrangements, sinewy strings and - more occasionally - heady horns. The plentiful highlights include the cheery jauntiness of 'Ciao Ciao Bambino', the lilting, slow-motion headiness of 'Shirl's Ghost', the semi-acoustic, Latin-tinged loveliness of 'Connemara', and the bluesy late 60s Beatles flex of 'The Human Race'.

Review: As part of Vegyn's more recent movements away from abstract, snappy electronica and into more dream pop and indie-intoned directions, the producer personally known as Joe Thornalley now debuts a new project, Headache, in collaboration with an elusive collaborator, Francis Hornsby Clark. Like the indeterminacy of the Double Virgo release also put out on PLZ last year, The Head Hurts but the Heart Knows the Truth is stylistically myriad. A surreal project, it arrests the subconscious with neurotic monologues from an unnamed AI narrator - a true sense of alienation seeming to waft from their lonesome, but characteristically British-accented dialogue - all of which are laid to indie-electronic beats in the reminiscent style of Saint Etienne or Boards Of Canada. An ultimately sad and limit-experiential album, which seems to constantly scream at the listener, "wake up!"

It has been produced by longtime collaborator Dan Carey and fuses the driving, motorik energy of Depeche Mode with PJ Harvey's sharp lyrical prowess, and is finished off with the offbeat rhythms of dance-punk favourites LCD Soundsystem. The result is a dark, intense sonic assault that is unmistakably Heartworms in the way it blends gothic post-punk with unashamed emotion and relentless momentum. It once again proves why Heartworms is one of the most exciting new voices in alternative music.

Clocking in at under 30 minutes (significantly less than their initial outing) and recorded live in dingy church rehearsal spaces to capture the unhinged intensity of their live performances, this is the sound of a band vehemently disinterested with mainstream appeal, exposure or playing the game by any terms apart from their own. While vocalist Danny Nedelko would be the named subject of one of the biggest singles from fellow Bristol natives Idles' 2018 breakout second album Joy As An Act Of Resistance, where his peers have expanded their sound and embraced myriads of melody, Heavy Lungs are poignantly going the opposite route, full speed towards oblivion with only chaos and anarchy on their collective minds.

Review: Roberto Lange is back with a new album for 4AD which feels in stark contrast to his previous outing, 2021's Far In. That album was a definite lockdown record, and now Lange is in the mood to reach out and celebrate the sunshine, funnelling his dense and dusky production and playing into some wonderfully varied songs. There's a unique sentimentality to the Helado Negro sound captured in the huge reverb tails which spiral out of songs like 'LFO (Lupe Finds Oliveros)', but there's no immediate fix for the curious charm of his dusty indie rock sound.

Review: Grouper's Liz Harris has made her name over the last decade with an evocative and wintry sound that is unique in its desolate minimalism. Moreover, while it wouldn't be every artist that would use a glacial yet abrasive dreampop power-trio as a way to blow off steam, this would seem superficially to be exactly what she's doing with Helen, her project in cahoots with members of Eternal Tapestry and Eat Skull. Yet 'The Original Faces' is a rare treat, replete with the hazy rapture of 4AD records of old yet suffused with the abstract sleight-of-hand that could have come from no-one else but Harris.

Review: Talk about appropriate names. There's something about Helen Island that sounds as though it has been cast adrift, washed up, and left to establish its own thing. The Parisian enigma's work feels ghostly, haunted by a past that has vanished into the ocean mist. Whether they'll ever be reunited is the real question, but mystery is the joy here. Whether it's at the uptempo, synth pop hued 'Hot Zone Regular Day', or the weird and wonderful psyche-electronica-field style 'Forever Starts Today', breathy samples on 'Indivisibl' or the innocent contemporary classical-cum-ambient plucked strings and keys of 'Restless Lovers' and 'Gore Lore', the whole thing is a strange and beguiling ride through the outer reaches of popular music.

Review: David Hepworth has been writing, broadcasting, and speaking about music since the 1970 - often alongside Mark Ellen, with the pair currently hosting the Word In Your Ear podcast. He helped launch and edit Smash Hits and The Word amongst others, and was a presenter on BBC's The Old Grey Whistle Test and an anchor for Live Aid in 1985. As such, he knows his stuff. Following the success of his Underrated Cuts From A Misunderstood Decade comes this follow up, which he has annotated track-by-track.From Roy Harper and Sandy Denny's folky shenangans to Status Quo. ZZ Top and proto-punks Eddie & The Hot Rods, this is Hepworth making a case that the 70s remains unmatched for music invention, and a strong case it is too.

Review: Hankerers after 90s band musicians turned Y2K solo electronica artists will water at the mouth at the first play of this one. Her Space Holiday was the first-time solo alias of Marc Bianchi, the American indietronic musician known for his membership of the bands Indian Summer and Calm. Turning his hand to solo soundcraft at the turn of the millennium, and releasing under Skylab and Tiger Style - the latter of which saw to the release of the first edition of this record, albeit with a different sleeve design - Bianchi's solo output would echo the post-hardcore humours that characterised his group work, except for the fact that it would also somewhat electronify them into contrition, resulting in every logical conclusion from lasery broadcast neofolk ('Snakecharmer') to anxiolytic hyperballad emo ('Through The Eyes Of A Child').

Review: Hips & Makers takes us back to a great time for independent guitar music. The debut album from Kirstin Hersh is deceptively quiet and unarguably powerful, predominantly made up of acoustic numbers that really speak to how strong the rock-folk crossover was at this point. Adding the inimitable voice of REM's Michael Stipe to the opening track, 'Your Ghost', only accentuates this. A million miles from 'twee', while things here are often set at a volume that encourages reflection, in other moments they explode into an earthen celebration of passion and energy. Almost carnal. 'A Loon' and its campfire yelps and whoops, 'Close Your Eyes' with its rousing chorus invoking resilience and resistance. Even the sparseness of 'The Letter' makes a huge impact.

Review: Danish electronic pop act Hess Is More's CaeKE marks a return to pop's borderlands after detours into orchestral and experimental sounds. Minimalist and mellow, the new album eschews sprawling ensembles for a DIY space of piano, drum machines, and vintage synths all of which frame Hess' wandering voice with eccentric poetry. Balancing maturity with childlike curiosity tracks like 'I Love My Life... Again and Again' exhibit a subversive lightheartedness amid mellow existentialism. The album is a reflection on fatherhood and life's changes since the early 00s that finds Hess embracing a new melody-one that harmonises seriousness with carefreeness, introspection with outward expression.
