Review: Primal Code brought plenty of fresh ideas and new perspectives to their debut album "La Via Della Seta" last year, and continue to do so on this fascinating new 12" for Sweden's Hypnus Records. They have a tribal take on techno that draws on indigenous cultures and instrumentation to make for darkly hypnotic tracks that echo the experimental work of the likes of Donato Dozzy, Neel and even Shackleton. It's mesmerising and cerebral stuff with psychedelic overtones and plenty of intriguing sounds, effects in the swirling ambient pads and deft little hooks that litter the rubbery, drawn out grooves.

Trax On Da Rocks (12" Nachpressung)
Cat: ROULE 301. Rel: 19 Sep 19
  1. On Da Rocks (4:13)
  2. Roule Boule (3:42)
  3. What To Do (4:29)
  4. Outrun (5:49)
  5. Ventura (6:31)
Review: Essential repress! Tomas Bangalter's stone cold classic Roule 12" Trax On Da Rocks makes a return. The five tracks on offer - "On Da Rocks", "Roule Boule", "What To Do", "Outrun" and "Ventura" - have acquired legendary status, standing as sublime examples of the rough, raw end of the filter-soaked French house sound. Some 17 years since they were first released, these tracks have lost none of their madcap brilliance; if this isn't already a cherished part of your record collection, here's your chance.

  1. Set Me Free (6:02)
  2. Don't Stop (5:02)
  3. Autumn Blues (5:43)
Review: Since first emerging in the late 1980s, Peter Elmaloglou has been one of the mainstays of the Australian techno scene. Derrick May is a fan and has decided to offer Elmaloglou the opportunity to showcase his wares on Transmat. A-side "Set Me Free" offers up an impressive fusion of soft-touch European tech-house tropes (fluid, delay-laden synthesizer motifs, tactile beats etc.), Chicago style psychedelic acid lines and the kind of rumbling, elongated bass tones that were once a feature of Kevin Saunderson's late '80s/early '90s work as Reese. Over on side B, "Don't Stop" is undulating, hypnotic and minimalist in tone, with percussion that both hisses and clicks, while "Autumn Blues" sees him pepper a squeezable techno groove with heady ambient chords and glassy-eyed electronic lead lines.

  1. Dimension Seven (6:04)
  2. Return (5:43)
  3. Onward (5:48)
Review: Chicago's Jon Hester spent years as a dancer before he even touched the decks and that shows in his floor facing cuts for Transmat, which follows other high grade outings on taste-making techno labels Dystopian, Deeply Rooted and Rekids. Infectious rhythm is at the core of Hester's work and all the tracks here: "Dimension Seven" is epic techno that surges to the cosmos on warm solar synths and chattery percussion from the Windy City. "Return" is deeper and infused with a warm sense of machine soul then "Onward" has some fantastic drum programming and pinging kick drums that sweep you up and along for a most thrilling ride.

Cat: MS 084. Rel: 19 Sep 19
  1. Chuuch (6:27)
  2. No Enemy No Table (6:56)
  3. Here To There (6:55)
Review: Hot on the heels of the release of their first album in 17 years, Underground Resistance affiliates Scan 7 return with one of their funkiest and most accessible EPs to date. Opener "Chuuch" is a riotous and righteous affair that sees main men TrackMasta Lou and Mr Hooper peppering a funky techno beat with killer samples from a wild and celebratory gospel disco classic. It's one of those tracks that will have even the most miserable clubber throwing their hands skywards in celebratory release. The pair continues on a similar vein on the organ-driven gospel techno stomp of "No Enemy No Table", before moving in a deeper and more relaxed direction on the equally as impressive "Here To There".

Ring Center (hand-stamped 12'')
Cat: EXT 004. Rel: 18 Sep 19
  1. DJ Gonzo & Dr Yes - "Ring Center" (6:17)
  2. Rough Thought - "Puneto" (6:44)
Review: No-nonsense German label EXT has gone back to basics here, delivering their first split-artist EP since 2016. DJ Gonzo and Dr Yes handle side A, unfurling a tactile but wonky techno jack-track ("Ring Center") full of jaunty, all action synth-bass, bleeping computer electronics, fluttering synth riffs and clanking drum machine beats that doff a cap to both Chicago jack and Motor City futurism. Rough Thought takes over on side B, charging through a bustling combination of rising and falling intergalactic synth lines, deep space chords, surging arpeggio bass and a drum track so sweaty that it could have been laid down by a drummer who has just downed four cans of the world's most repulsive energy drink.

Supernature EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: SALT 012. Rel: 18 Sep 19
  1. Carpentaria (6:49)
  2. The Earth (9:31)
  3. Silicone Valium (5:49)
  4. Supernature (9:08)
Review: "Supernature" is Escape Artist's sophomore EP on Salt Mines and is another stylish intersection between breaks, electro, techno and ambient. The music here is crisp and clean, with sleek lines and sharp edges making it all the more pure and serene sounding. "Carpentaria" is a scene-setting opener that builds on smeared pads without ever fully taking off, and "The Earth" repeats the trick but with more bubbling and organic percussion. "Silicone Valium" is a brilliantly trippy electro cut on fat and heavy kicks and the title track marks full lift off with a surging future-techno groove detailed with some old school breaks.

Track Six (12")
Cat: ES 015. Rel: 18 Sep 19
  1. FSOM - "Track Six" (5:43)
  2. Andy Rantzen - "Harmonic Eye" (4:17)
Review: Melbourne-based Efficient Space continue to plunder the vaults of their local electronic music legacy on their latest release. Indeed it's a rather parochial affair on the A side which features Future Sound Of Melbourne - an electronic group comprised of Davide Carbone, Josh Abrahams and Steve Robbins. Each respective artist went on to achieve considerable success with their solo efforts afterwards - Abrahams in particular finding mainstream success on the pop drum'n' bass anthem "Addicted To Bass" in the late '90s. Their offering "Track Six" is a true zeitgeist of early '90s techno that takes the best aspects of US and European sounds of the time. On the flip, Sydney legend Andy Rantzen (of duo Itch-E and Scratch-E (along with Paul Mac)) offers up the fairly minimal and hypnotic jam "Harmonic Eye".

Cat: WM 003. Rel: 18 Sep 19
  1. Techno Disco Tool (6:44)
  2. Cloud One (5:56)
  3. World Dance (6:38)
Review: Ryan Aitchison aka Mella Dee is back on the fuming Warehouse Music imprint with three boiling-hot, golden era house cuts for the headz! In fact, the opening "Techno Disco Tool", as the name suggests, is a wondrous loop of high-powered soul, backed by an electrifying shade of FX filtering. On the flip, "Cloud One" is driven by a strong disco sample loop, taking it to some seriously euphoric lavels on the dancefloor, and "World Dance" dives right into the middle of the rave with its hypnotic techno sonics and harsh, intricate percussion loops. Three full-blown BOMBS!

Centrifuge (red vinyl 12")
Cat: MOS 027. Rel: 18 Sep 19
  1. Centrifuge (9:46)
  2. Relic Reworked (5:39)
Review: Random XS was founded in 1991, when DJ Zero One (Sander Friedeman) joined forces with Arno Peeters to perform live at a small underground party in Utrecht before the latter left three years later and was replaced by Frank de Groodt. After the long awaited re-release of their 1992 Djax-Up-Beats classic "Give Your Body" last year on Delsin, they return with a pair of unreleased jams for fellow Dutch imprint MOS Recordings. Both tracks are said to be recorded in the early '90s, but reworked and remastered for "heavy club impact". On the A side is some proper minimal mentalism on the frantic and tunnel vision "Centrifuge", followed by the sublime 303 wizardry of "Relic Reworked" on the flip, which hails "all aboard the acid express!" better than any other.

Review: In case you didn't know, leading Dutch crew Dekmantel have taken it upon themselves to shine a light on the vital work of the Djax Up label. It was one that joined the dots between US and European scenes back in the nineties and this second volume features eight cult 90s cuts from some foundational names. Highlights are plentiful throughout, but our picks have got to be Glenn Underground's "Real Space"; a jacking Chicago jam with cosmic bass that still bangs and DJ Skull's hi-tek soul on "Don't Stop The Beat" that well and truly defies its age amongst a release that is full of golden oldies.

  8. Work A Change (instrumental) (5:31)
Review: While Steffi and Virginia have been working together on and off for the best part of a decade, "Work A Change" is undoubtedly their most significant collaborative work to date (both in terms of its expansive nature and the quality of music on show). With Virginia handling singing duties throughout, "Work A Change" rides on waves of tasty electro grooves and hazy synth-pop motifs and futuristic electronics. It's a blueprint that guarantees goodness throughout, from the quietly euphoric shuffle of opener "Be True To Me" and the pulsating dancefloor fizz of "Help Me Understand" (one of two cuts showcased in both vocal and instrumental forms), to the high-tempo thrust of "Until You're Begging", the bass-heavy, future dancehall wonkiness of "Internal Bleeding" and triumphantly intergalactic title track.

  14. The Beginning (2:49)
Review: Barely six weeks after dropping her debut single on River Rapid, Henrietta Smith-Rolla pops up on Skam with a surprise debut album. As first full length excursions go, "Break Before Make" is undeniably impressive. Beginning with the spooky, minor key electronics and angular IDM rhythms of "Day Turner", the 14 track set sees Smith-Rolla successfully turn her hand to bittersweet synth-wave ("And!"), dystopian pitched-down electronica ("Guess What"), spacey electro ("Work It", "Wtfwtfwtf"), clandestine electronic soundscapes (the panicked shuffle of "Blanket Ban") and grandiose sci-fi soundtrack fare ("The Middle Middle"). Throughout, the Manchester-based producer consistently delivers otherworldly musical melancholia with a panache not associated with a producer of her relative inexperience.

Review: Tribe Of Colin have done a good job of keeping their identity unknown despite plenty of well received releases. Honest Jon's gets a fourth album from the enigmatic artist(s) that deals in sludgy techno, dubby steppers and pulsing electronic music that harks back to the streets of Detroit as much as hinting at a future London landscape long after humans have long gone. Twisted synths, shimmering percussion, dark chords and complex rhythms are interwoven with gritty textures and field recordings from around the world to make it a spellbinding listen. Fans of Actress and Andy Stott will love.

  1. When Love Gets Cold (5:04)
  2. To Fall In Love (5:15)
  3. All I Want (6:06)
  4. Blessed (4:39)
Review: After years of promoting events, Percolate has decided to embark on a new project - Percolate Records. They welcome longtime friend, British producer Austin Ato, to take them on the first steps of their new journey. Ato has appeared on a wide variety of imprints lately, from Me Me Me and Delusions Of Grandeur to Futureboogie and even Defected. "When Love Gets Cold" opens with the sweltering and finely filtered disco loops of the title track, paving the way for bouncy and euphoric house anthem "To Fall In Love" (which is equally as disco-fied!) and emotive Detroit house banger "All I Want". Speaking of the Motor City: he shows he is equally competent at hi-tech soul (with a UK rave influence too) on the breakbeat-driven and evocative "Blessed".

  1. De Ton Absence (single version) (5:19)
  2. De Ton Absence (Timothy J Fairplay remix) (6:26)
Review: Electronic Leatherette continue their trips into the ethereal and seductive world of minimal wave with this new single from label founders Dmitry Distant and Arnaud Lazlaud. "De Ton Absence" is an artfully sculpted synth ballad bathed in reverb and Lazlaud's dreamy vocals - the end result is something both yearning and sinister, like the best minimal wave should be. On the flip, the balladry gets a shot of pure adrenaline as Timothy J Fairplay creates a taut, feisty electro belter out of the raw ingredients for a remix that should find favour with more uptempo dancefloors.

Since then he's travelled to labels such as M_REC, Wolfskuil, Phorma and Linear Movement, but he's back home to roost with this gorgeous four-tracker that plays on his trademark sound. Rich with melancholic synth work and moving with a purposeful but thoughtful pace, this is exactly the kind of evocative techno that makes Silent Season a buy on sight label. Every track tells its own story, but the starry twinkle of "The Metamorphosis Of Plants" is especially captivating.

Review: Fresh from delving into his ambient side on the pastorally-enhanced "Loom Dream" album for Whities, Leif revives his self-manned Tio Series with another double-shot of delicate but impactful cuts outside the conventional slipstream of modern techno. The rhythms fall crooked, the synths trickle, bubble and cascade around the groove and the atmosphere remains humid and heady, especially on ear-snagging B-side "Rumex". "Montpelier" sports more explicit dubby flourishes and a spread of sonic flora and fauna in the middle distance that truly brings the track to life.

Basiel (clear vinyl 12" Nachpressung)
Cat: LENSKE 003. Rel: 16 Sep 19
  1. Never The Same (6:27)
  2. Energize (5:57)
  3. Basiel (6:23)
Review: Following her breakthrough year in 2017, Amelie Lens has been surprisingly quiet on the production front. In fact, this is the Belgian's first solo EP of 2018. It is jam-packed with high-grade dancefloor material, beginning with the mind-altering techno-jack of A-side "Never The Same", where intense acid lines and matter-or-fact spoken word snippets ride a thunderous groove. Lens keeps up the pressure on side B, where the functional techno slammer "Energize" - a rhythmic beast full of ricocheting vocal samples and drum machine handclap fills - is followed by the rave-friendly angular techno-funk of "Basiel".

  2. Track 2 (7:57)
Review: The likes of Steve O'Sullivan, Baby Ford and Norm Talley have appeared on the somewhat overlooked Sushitech sub-label Pariter since 2006. Its latest release comes from Romanian trio Lisiere Collectif, who bring the techno sound of Bucharest to you on the first installment of Unknown Credentials. Member Andu Simion is well known for his rolling and glacial grooves, and in conjunction with Bogdan Ardeleanu and Dan Gheorghe they serve up two emotive and soulful excursions. The untitled A side offering is a driving, hypnotic and overall evocative journey with an undeniable nod to the Motor City sound that you could imagine Delano Smith pumping out in the AM hours. On the B side it is a more parochial affair, yet well worthy - a bumping and funky groove that's right in line with their hometown's renowned sound.

Unknown Credentials is a project of 5 tracks released on 2 single records. A sides on both parts are absolutely massive, acid lines and hypnotic chords peak time tracks that will shake any proper sound system with some serious bass extension! B sides are deeper and have more modern, fresh electroish vibe that we love!

Review: Long-serving electro project Transparent Sound come back full throttle with this expansive album of masterful machine music. Opening track "Pretend Like You Care" is a startling opener that feels like a wormhole back to the Cologne laboratories of the kosmische movement. The beats kick in proper from that point, and in consummate noirish fashion, with "No Call From New York", and proceed to trip through all manner of nocturnal dreamscapes lit in sleazy neon strip lighting. It's a lurid, evocative sound world the veteran duo concoct, and one you'll find yourself returning to again and again.
