Solitario EP
Cat: 030EP 018. Rel: 19 Nov 20
  1. Solitario (5:47)
  2. Dronacid (Phaserinterlude mix) (4:32)
  3. Peanut Butter (3:41)
  4. Non Ridere (4:30)
  5. Barocco CC (3:56)
Review: Aside from occasional appearances on Moisture Records, much of Francesco Pio Nitti's work as Caramel Chameleon has been self-released. He's put out some great music though, so it's heartening to see that fast-rising Dutch imprint 030303 has decided to hand him his first ever vinyl release. There's much to admire across the five-track set, from the sun-bright, life-affirming, synth-pop-influenced techno positivity of 'Solitario' and the 'New Order goes Balearic on the moon' vibes of 'Dronacid (Phaserinterlude Mix)', to the cheery, vocoder sporting electro bounce of 'Peanut Butter', and the Boards of Canada style IDM melodiousness of quality closing cut 'Barocco CC'.

  3. Live In Transnistria (4:46)
  4. TritonProOneS900 (7:11)
  5. My Dad Was A Lifeguard (7:16)
Review: There's no stopping Danny Wolfers, who has still managed to release two albums as Legowelt this year despite a raging pandemic and a crippling economic downturn. He's predictably on form again on his first outing for Lapsus offshoot C.E.E, giddily moving between a range of sparkling, synth-heavy outings that encapsulate all that is good about his analogue-rich productions. We're really enjoying opener 'Santiago Chile Arp Track', where sparkling electronic melodies and mind-warping TB-303 lines rise and fall above a jacking techno drum track, while title track 'System Shapeshift' is amongst the most psychedelic, punchy and potent electro tracks he's ever released. Also worth a look is the early Orbital-ish trip that is 'Live in Transnistria', not to mention the stuttering heaviness of strobe-lit acid onslaught 'My Dad Was a Lifeguard'.

Cat: DLEP 03. Rel: 19 Nov 20
  1. Cycle (7:13)
  2. Mind Expander (6:09)
  3. Distance (6:53)
Review: It is not a surprise that in a year of cancelled gigs and stay at home orders, artists have got more productive on the tune making front. But even so, Human Space Machine has done extra well, with this bring a third outing of 2020. It's as good as the previous two, with astral styled techno and smooth grooves journeying well off into the future. The opener is a perfectly reduced, airy, ethereal roller to get things going. The spacecraft really takes off on 'Mind Expander' with all its sci-fi sound effects and then 'Distance' cuts loose with broken beats.

Jargon (12")
Cat: DC 06. Rel: 20 Nov 20
  1. SNAD - "Jargon" (7:31)
  2. SNAD - "Urban Decay" (6:09)
  3. Jackson Lee - "Syntax Error" (8:14)
  4. Jackson Lee - "Clouds Of Xeen" (5:56)
Review: Deep Club launches another split-12" consisting of two unlikely pairings. Berlin via Chicago's Snad leads the A-side. After co-founding Gandu Records in Chicago he jumped across the pond, where his output increased quickly for the likes of Minibar and Smallville while contributing to US favorites Kimochi and TerraFirm. On Jargon / Syntax Error, "Jargon" encompasses his signature style of deep, minimal, swinging house. The track builds over almost eight minutes with a massive rolling baseline and sporadic synth stabs and pads. Mix out too early and you miss the point. "Urban Decay" is a bass massage that hits only on the right sound system or headphones. Jackson Lee takes side B in a different direction while still exploring themes around deep and minimal. The mysterious NYC via Memphis techno producer boasts an impressive catalog on his Mystical Disco imprint, as well as collaborations with Ben Jenkins, R Gamble and Grey People. "Syntax Error" is an extended techno bomb with a massive kickdrum that will leave dancefloors sizzling. The eerie effects crawling in and out of the texture and sharp hats combine with the low end for a masterclass in deep techno. "Clouds of Xeen" brings the energy down with distortion, wispy pads, and glistening layers, making it a great choice for 6 AM sleaze.

  3. Future Teller (6:45)
  4. The Avoidance Of Murder (6:20)
Review: Developer Archive returns with its Eleventh chapter and as you'd expect, the EP is made up of four groove based techno bangers tailor-made for floor-filling. The moods differ on each track and its mostly in-your-face beats, growing looped riffs, haunting modular electronics, and occasional mind-altering synth lines. Huge TIP

  2. Seker 5 (5:49)
  3. Sekerli (5:26)
  4. Seker 7 (5:36)
  5. Seker (5:42)
Review: Pigeonholing the work of Ruben Uvez AKA Konduku has always been tough, as anyone who has tried to describe his brilliant releases on Nous'klaer Audio and Idle Hands will happily tell you. His renowned ability to not only blur but bend boundaries is once again evident on the Seker EP, which marks his first appearance on Diskant. For proof, check the polyrhythmic, strangely swung beats, dub techno flourishes and creepy melodies of 'Sekersin', or the dubbed-out brilliance of 'Sekerli', whose intricately programmed percussion hits tend towards the tribal. This reliance on mutilated South American and African rhythms, reprogrammed and re-played on drum machines with added UK bass percussion patterns, continues throughout an inspired and predictably off-kilter EP.

  1. Discatron (6:28)
  2. 3p (5:18)
  3. B-theory (7:01)
  4. Sound Matter (5:16)
Review: Earlier in the year, Bobby Bird decided to reissue his debut album as Higher Intelligence Agency (then a collaborative project with Asian Dub Foundation's Steve Chandra Savale), the ambient techno and IDM classic that is 1993's Colourform. Here he presents some brand-new music from his long-running project, and it's rather good. Opener 'Discatron' (named in honour of a portable record player invented in Birmingham) is classic HIA fare, with Bird wrapping psychedelic acid lines and spacey bleeps around a dub-tinged post-electro groove. He slows down the tempo on the similarly dubby IDM number '3P', before entering the ambient realm via the hushed wooziness of 'Colourmotion'. Elsewhere, 'B Theory' is exotic, bubbly and picturesque, while 'Sound Matter' is a ghostly, slow-motion affair for late nights and early mornings.

Lozano 2.0: The Music Man EP
Cat: WRECKS 032. Rel: 19 Nov 20
  1. A Higher Place (7:32)
  2. Imdointhis4u (5:43)
  3. Zusammen (6:34)
  4. Beaten With A Beat Tool (5:08)
Review: Having spent the last two years working on upgrades on his top-secret Sheffield bunker, Luca Lozano is ready to return to action. By the sounds of it, he spent the time well, because Lozano 2.0: Music Man contains some of his most emotive and musically intricate material to date. For proof, check 'Imdoingthis4u', where subtle nods towards disco and funk are detectable amongst the chunky beats, weighty bass, sparkling electronics and raw riffs. There's a similarly warming and surprisingly dreamy feel to acid-flecked mid-tempo number 'Zusammen', while 'Beaten With a Beat Tool' sees him add fluttering female vocal samples and saucer-eyed, sunrise-ready chords to a rolling, Afro-influenced beat. Best of all though is 'A Higher Place', a druggy chugger that alternates between trippy, mind-altering intensity and surging, rave-ready positivity.

Review: Roman hard dance imprint No Pizza Rave return with the brothers John & Paul Healy aka Somatic Responses, who have appeared on many labels since the mid '90s such as Hymen, Acroplane Recordings and RIOT Radio, in addition to heading up Photon Emissions from a small industrial mining community located in the southwest region of Wales. From the jagged industrial strength swing of 'Projekt 701', to 'Urksome' (Acid Short Mix) full of proper pummeling 303 squelch madness, and going out all hammer and tongs at the end with the gabber noise terror of 'Old Evil' (Part 2) - Warped 7th Circuit will completely flip your mind!

Review: Pacific Jams, an Italian duo composed of Mennie & Zee, are charting a new path with this amazing EP on Grooveguy's Florence-based Path Of Orbit, which follows up the awesome Planetarium compilation released not long ago. On the Pleiadi EP, opening cut 'Astral' is for fans of groovy futurist tech house in the vein of Mulen or Jack Wickham, while the acid washed retro techno of the B side title track looks to similar sounds coming out of Offenbach, Germany. Finally, the blissed-out sundown breaks of 'Quazar' closes out one very promising debut by these ascendant producers.

Cat: TPT 090. Rel: 20 Nov 20
  1. Planting Seeds (5:10)
  2. Night Seeds (5:59)
  3. Scorched (7:14)
Review: The Advent is a legendary techno outfit dating back decades. Originally consisting of Mr G and Cisco, now only the latter remains, and he brings a certain hardness to the techno remakes that will connect with those who are fans of that style's recent resurgence. Of course, Perc Trax has always dealt in that stuff so makes a perfect home. 'Planting Seeds' is a manic, dense opener, yet 'Night Seeds' manages to up the ante with even more frenzied grooves. 'Scorched' leaves the warehouser behind and has a more Motor City style, looking to the future and filled with machine soul.

  4. Gravity Assist (7:45)
Review: Raiders of the Lost Arp has been serving up his escapist sounds since the mid-nineties. He has been collecting his analogue gear since then, too, and plenty of it informs the smooth and succulent sounds on this new EP for Superliminal. Opener 'Transmission One' is a cosmic exploration with nice punch kicks and flashes of melody before 'Bridge' (Extended Transmission mix) is more uptempo and driving, with chattering perc deriving it onwards. 'Interstellar Space' layers up glistening chords with more subtle 303 sounds and 'Gravity Assist' closes out with a more manic vibe.

  6. Drynk (3:59)
Review: Dutchman and master of black hole techno rhythms Guy Blanken returns as Talismann with six more of his perfectly designed late night rollers. He opens up with the squelchy bass rumbles and eerie hanging steel sounds of 'Anchoryst' which sounds like it might eat itself it it plays out for long enough. 'Shayker' is more kinetic and compressed with hunched drums forcing you to move and 'Fryction' then building through dubby drums, waves of synths and pounding claps. Intensity levels do not let up on the closing two cuts, but there is a real melodic lightness and beauty to 'Jylya.'

Mind Control
Cat: WHO 15. Rel: 19 Nov 20
  1. Acceleration Morphosis (10:26)
  2. Acceleration Morphosis (Mind Control version) (5:45)
  3. La Neta (4:36)
Review: Somewhat remarkably, Mind Control marks long-serving techno and experimental electronica producer Christian Vogel's first solo 12" for almost five years. It's well worth picking up though, because it contains a trio of complex, creepy, clandestine and occasionally cacophonous cuts that are amongst his most impactful productions of recent times. Opener 'Acceleration Morphosis' is atmospheric and mind-mangling, with unsettling drone tones and horror-inspired ambient chords clustering around crackling noise and distant (and metallic-sounding) percussion hits. Vogel drags it towards the dancefloor on the accompanying 'Mind Control' version, re-imagining it as an intense and paranoid slab of spine-tingling techno. Arguably best of all though is 'La Neta', a throbbing and bass-heavy affair that sits somewhere between Autechre and the polyrhythmic techno vibes of the Livity Sound label.

Vilamar 001

  2. Vilamar 02 (4:59)
  3. Vilamar 03 (5:36)
  4. Vilamar 04 (6:40)
Review: Amusingly, this first EP from the Vilamar collective was promoted via a press release that claims they are "stepping out of the shadows," but gives no further information about the identities of the Lisbon-based producers involved. Whoever is responsible, it's a suitably sure-footed, bass-heavy and club-ready collection. The men or women of mystery hit the ground running with sub-heavy, armour-plated ghetto-tech-meets-breakbeat onslaught 'Vilamar 01', before delivering a darker and moodier number from the post-dubstep school of bass-heavy techno. 'Vilamar 03' brilliantly mixes and matches elements more often found in experimental drum and bass and dubstep releases, while 'Vilamar 05' is a psychedelic assault on the senses with added bowel-bothering bass weight.

Review: It's been a strange year, as you may have noticed. But rather than shy away from boldness, Figure takes a leap of faith and here starts a brand new compilation series that features "forward-thinking electronica and ambient from a well-curated list of seasoned producers." Across six sides of vinyl, the tracks often draw out a different side of the artists involved and results are always designed for wandering minds. Highlights are plentiful with Sebastian Mullaert offering up plenty of his mistiness, Berghian regular Len Faki finding a softer side on 'Find Your Way' and Moritz Von Oswald offering up the sort of lo-fi and grainy atmospheres you would expect.
