Review: In recent times Daniel Avery has been busy collaborating with the likes of Alessandro Cortini and Roman Flugel (the latter as Noun), so few expected him to drop a new solo album in 2020. Yet Love & Light, his surprise third full-length, could well be his most sonically stunning set to date. Beginning with the gaseous ambient opaqueness of 'London Island', the set sees him blaze a trail through 1990s style Sabres of Paradise/Sabresonic techno, hazy dub techno, beatless soundscapes and intense drone tones, before switching focus to deep, gentle and melodious mutations of breakbeat, IDM and electronica.

Review: To celebrate the album's 25th birthday, Bobby Bird has decided to release a freshly re-mastered version of his second studio album as Higher Intelligence Agency, Freefloater. It further distils the saucer-eyed musical template he developed (initially with the assistance of then studio partner Steve Chandra Savale) on 1993 debut Colourform. That means a decidedly intergalactic, frequently psychedelic blend of IDM electronics, mind-mangling TB-303 lines, dub basslines, ambient textures and mutant electro beats. It's considered by many to be an "ambient electro" classic and we'd have to agree. Thanks to Bird's painstaking re-mastering work, it also sounds better than ever.

Indio
Indio (2xLP)
Cat: SUBWAXEXCLP 04. Rel: 23 Nov 20
  1. Earthtones (8:45)
  2. Abolene (5:56)
  3. I Need You In The Fall (8:30)
  4. A Thousand Storms (6:42)
  5. Armenian Eyes (5:25)
  6. Free (3:53)
  7. Lite Yellow (6:26)
  8. Kino Flow (7:27)
  9. Snowdrifts (9:36)
Review: Indio is an alias of Detroit's John Beltran, a producer who can do lush ambient, dreamy techno, and plenty in between. His music is well revered amongst those who know and this album is very much part of that legend. It was first put out on CD back in 1999 on Derrick May's Transmat label and here Subwax Excursions finally press it to two fine slabs of wax for the first time having carefully remastered all the material. It's the sort of archetypal and timeless techno you always think of when it comes to Detroit - emotionally crushing strings, digital bleeps and mellifluous moonscapes that ride scintillating drums way off to infinity.

  9. Monologues (interlude) (2:33)
  10. Then & Now (6:12)
  11. Awaken From A Dream (5:09)
Review: Dreams in Sepia is the first solo album from Sam McQueen, a Chicago resident and collaborator with the great Detroit musician John Beltran. It lands on a.r.t.less, Mojuba Records' sub-label, for the first time on vinyl having been put out as a CD in 2019. It is a record awash with nostalgic ambient, dreamy synthscapes and dancing synths that transport you to a place in the cosmos far, far away. There are the heavy, melancholic tunes like 'Wicker Park Sunrise' and the more impishly spirited dancing gems like 'Soulmate' but all come together to make for a coherent and absorbing listen.

  4. Crimes & Misdemeanours (5:35)
  5. Leaf (5:08)
  6. Marbles (5:02)
  7. Let It Go (6:11)
  8. Wonder (3:54)
Review: At some point this year, Luke Slater was digging in his archives and he unearthed the original DAT and reel-to-reel tapes of this benchmark long player. It was one of only a few that came under his sporadic Morganistic alias but really sits up there with the best albums of its era. It's linear, straight ahead techno from an interplanetary space that is alive with scurrying sonic motifs and alien life forms, streaming synth lines that leave neon trails in their wake and, on tracks like 'Crimes & Misdemeanours', it has a real trance inducing intensity. The original material has been remastered by the revered Matt Colton at Metropolis which lends it extra heft.
