Review: Boris Brejcha is a big deal in the techno world and for good reason. He has an all consuming sound that works in a wide array of different settings. He serves it up on veteran German label Harthouse here with a coloured 12" packing one solid punch on each side. 'Moment In Life' is a moody one that teases and pulls back, with suggestive synth motifs and textured synth modulations all suggesting something is just around the corner. 'Lost Memory' is a much deeper and more pensive cut with lonely lead speaking of real pain.

Review: Boris Brejcha's distinctive style of 'high-tech minimal' has earned him much credo over the years, enough to warrant the rerelease of several of his most enduring tracks under the recently embarked-upon Classics series. The tracks this time around are 'Festival Of Love' and 'Wolcke 7', originally released in 2007 and 2008 respectively on the Harthouse label before taking the international minimal scene by storm. Though they're both shuffling, popcorny sundowners for those who like it clean, classy and glassy, these tracks explore different zones, with the A-sider far jankier than the more accessible B.

Review: Florin Buchel's work as Contra Communem Opinionem has bridged the gap between seemingly disparate labels like Lux Rec, Mathematics, Drumpoet Community and Photic Fields without missing a beat. More recently, he's funnelled the CCO output through his own label Silum to bring us some EPs of dazzling hardware tech house with ample melodic content to keep the dark clouds at bay. 'Atmospheric Inversion' toys with jazzy discord, but the vibe is primarily soulful and synth-driven, while 'Atmospheric Extinction' heads wholeheartedly towards uplifting chord sequences to get your hair standing on end. 'Atmospheric Pressure' takes a snappier, techier approach but the tools and signal chains are the same, so the pervading warmth of the tracks maintains. This is house music which instinctively connects back to the gritty strain of machine soul pioneered in Detroit - if you're always searching for that quality in your club tracks you won't want to overlook this one.

Review: Much loved doom monger emo kids Depeche Mode have always been ripe for remixing by new generations of electronic music artists and so it is that there 'My Favourite Stranger' gets a series of re-rubs here on Columbia. Tech house mainstay Boris Brejcha remixes first and elongates the grooves with mournful pads up top. The Ela Minus remix of the same tune brings some extra textured and darker moods and the best is saved till the last if you ask us. The Lond Island Sound remix is high speed and tinged with electro synth work as the moody vocals echo about the mix to trippy effect.

Review: The Nullpunkt label is fast approaching its 25th release but first comes this fearsome outing from F&E. The third installment in the Forschung & Entwicklung series comes on grey vinyl and does not mess about with five more cuts all served up as Antal or Rural versions from 2016. The first rides on rusty jungle breaks, the second, 'Conclusion', is an atmospheric piece with a minimal rhythm and warped synth daubs while 'Six Days' is a dark and heavy piece of ambient techno dystopia. 'Outro' is the lightest and brightest piece of synth work on the EP then 'Research' brings back the jungle techno with more serrated synths and loopy, jagged rhythms.

The results were superb and devastating on the floor, and so have been the remixes he has served up on his own Figure label. This collection sees some top names rework the originals into their own style with Pangaea bringing some slick future synth work to 'Space Cowboys I', Rroxymore bringing heavy percussive grooves to 'Tor 8' and Truncate adding his signature rock solid drum funk to 'It's Time (To Move Your Body).' Review: Jinje is a solo project from Lee Malcolm, a founding member of the Leeds-based experimental band Vessels. His music in solo mode is just as singer and hard to categorise as with his band and here on Mesh he veers between electronic, synthetic and organic sound worlds with driving breakbeats topped with gorgeous string sounds, hype-real synths and a shimmering sense of sonic futurism that is awash with melody. Review: TRNWORK is a brand new label from Detroit native Pablo R Ruiz which he says will explore the darker side of the dance floor. The first release sure is a head-turner that opens with 'Bust It Out' (Raw mix). The drums are militant and scuffed up while off-grid claps and woozy pads bring extra dynamism. The Deep Mix then pairs it back to twitchy synths and minimal drums, and then a RELB Infinite Jek remix quickens the groove but keeps it dark, late night and moody. 'Vivelo' is the closer that will trip out any floor with its whirring synths and bleeps over crunchy drum funk.

If you ever enjoyed Sneak-Thief in the past you'll be more than satisfied here as he leans in on that potent blend of EBM, Italo and machine funk with plenty of vocoder and nasty, throbbing baselines. 'All Let Go (dub)' is an unbridled party monster, while 'Der Herzenbrescher' has a smouldering, bombastic synth-pop feel which you'll be hard-pressed to resist. This is a welcome follow-up to last year's ambient and IDM exploration, Birds, and shows another side that draws on Maristuen's years of queer clubbing. It fuses aspects of New York house, Berlin techno and West-coast breakbeats and is "a love letter to the West Coast's magnificent natural landscape, the light of the Pacific sunrise." The new OST was produced by Raphael Gesqua; with about one hundred original soundtracks created for video games or cinema since the beginning of the 90s, Gesqua reunites here with the one who got him started in the world of video games: Paul Cuisset, on Flashback: The Quest For Identity. Cuts from both versions of the game (Commodore and Amiga) appear as part of a rich soundtrack, swerving between cinematic music, electronics and synthwave ambiances. A must have for all science fiction fans.

Review: Detroit house hero Kyle Hall returns with his biggest project in some time in the form of Transmissions, a new double album on his own well-regarded Forget The Clock. All six tracks have enigmatic, functional titles and the music is as idiosyncratic as ever. Each one veers more towards techno than is Hall's usual style, with pulsating synth lines and tight, dusty drum tracks making for stripped-to-the-bones grooves. Later on, things grow ever more abstract with twisted acid lines screwing their way through the increasingly ragged and roughshod drums. These are perfectly imperfect jams from a master of the form.

Review: Seven years after his last album, UK techno mainstay Perc is back with another thrilling full length that brings together the past, present and future of his sound. Hard techno is very much in right now but Perc has always dealt in a tough take on the genre that is at odds with the usual tropes and he showcases that again here with plenty of high-energy tracks and a healthy dose of his signature industrial texture. Coming on smokey black vinyl this time, nobody has a reason to not have this record in their collection. Included are legendary tracks like 'Stems', 'Clouded' and 'Leafs'. Many think that not only is this the best Recondite album but one of the best techno albums of the year 2013.

There are hard, dramatic percussion stormers like 'Rated-R' or 'Nuclear Device'. There are powerful and intense builders like 'Perceiver' or ' Rise Of The Robots'. Then you have mysteriously eerie and dark minimal tracks like 'The Continent Of Reason' or 'A Wise Precaution'. Overall, the record is full of commanding high powered darker techno that demands your attention.

Review: After a surprise sojourn last year as Sato, an alias he used to explore ambient and dub techno territory, Satoshi Tomiie has reverted to his given name for solo album number five - a thin return given he made his 12" debut way back in 1989. The New York-based Japanese great is in fine form from the start, effortlessly sashaying between hypnotic deep tech-house (the eyes-closed, early morning excellence of 'You Are Here'), spaced-out dub-house ('Number 1'), chunky-but-dubby deep house of the kind that his friend Francois K would love ('Magic Hour'), acid-flecked minimalism ('Blast'), vintage-sounding dub techno ('A52', 'Meditation in an Emergency'), locked-in soundscape house (the shuffling and yearning 'Phase Space') and sub-heavy ambient dub ('Fast Track').

Review: Those who know, know how strong the Dutch electro scene has been since the early 90s and Netherlands label BAKK has a special compilation here with many excellent electro tracks to enjoy - no less than 11 tunes in total, spread across three pieces of wax. The list of artists is impressive, from Legowelt, Antenna, SFV Acid and more. This pack starts off with a stunner called 'Bos Ochtendmist' by Legowelt, a phased out and radiant futuristic theme song that's just downright beautiful! Rather than imitating any other city's history of the style's, these artists have their own style - see Aurora Halal's 'Spiral' as a great example, or Sfv Acid 's 'Urbanfury' which adds some nice IDM influences. The slow and deep bass on Tala Drum Corps's 'Gargoyle' is killer too. An early candidate for best electro comp of the year 2024.

Review: German label Cocoon is a real icon when it comes to techno. It very much introduced the genre to the mainstream with its presence in Ibiza and continues to put out plenty of useful 12"s as well as its wide array of compilations. This latest is an eighth edition of the Dots & Pearls collection which tends to more stripped back and underground than some of its other annual round-ups. As such we get dark and menacing techno growers like 'Antidot' from Alex Bau, Redshape's misty and loft creeper 'Ghost Story' and Aocram & Ramsey Neville team up for the ghoulish and swampy techno energy of 'Brooklyn Structure', with plenty more besides.

Review: Wave Arising is former Spiral Tribe man Sebastian Vaughan with vocalist Kynsie and they are a duo that likes to eplxore body, mind and soul "through intuitive listening of senses and inner energies by means of music , workshops and gatherings." This is their debut album and is an otherworldly mix of deep grooves and occult sonic landscapes. It has been made from various improvisations and avoids there use of sampling and as an album, this is one that feels very much alive. There are cinematic dub techno workouts, cascading synths and alien sound designs, menacing low ends and moments of majestic melodic beauty such as on 'Ronde Cinetique'. A brilliant debut.
