  2. Ocean Myst (6:04)
  3. Deep Horizons (6:38)
  4. Twilight Dive (5:24)
Review: Electro heads take note, Gaetan Votion is here with his emergent Aquatronics alias looking to celebrate everything Drexciyan. From the project title to the sounds on this latest 12", you can hear the influence of Gerald Donald and James Stinson faithfully channeled - the important thing is Votion has done a good job of it. "Wave Gliders" is awash with rich, sweeping pads and underpinned by chunky bass synths, while "Ocean Myst" takes things under the waves with beautifully rendered aqueous atmospherics. "Deep Horizons" is a sweeter mood with powerful chord progressions at its heart for a highly emotional listening experience. "Twilight Dive" completes the set with a mellow mood for that brings a perfect sense of balance to this top drawer EP.

  3. Sohrab - "Sinking" (6:42)
  4. KCLF - "Reloaded 9615" (4:17)
Review: Undersound Recordings hit release number 15 with a various artist EP that packs four vital techno punches. Audio Quest's "The Mental Screen" kicks off with some old school techno that recalls the sound of legendary Dutch label Djax-Up. It's filled with metallic snare sounds and deep space bleeps. Jared Wilson of course brings the acid that has defined his output for years, and Sohrab get busy with a kicking number and some busy melody patterns. KCLF closes out with twisted bass and shiny chords that look back to go forwards with "Reloaded 9615".

  4. More Light (James Zabiela remix) (6:04)
  5. Color Me (Telefon Tel Aviv remix) (5:19)
Review: Bochum Welt's 2019 album "Seafire" was arguably one of the strongest full-length sets that Central Processing Unit has released to date, which given the Sheffield-based label's track record is high praise indeed. This EP offers fresh interpretations of some of the album's many highlights. First up is a perfectly pitched radio edit of "More Light" a gorgeous slice of IDM bliss that recalls the halcyon days of Boards of Canada, which is later given a slightly chunkier - but no less beautiful - treatment by EOD and a bustling, club-ready electro re-fix, complete with Yorkshire bleeps, by veteran DJ/producer James Zabeila. Elsewhere, the ambient mix of "G1" is as luscious and blissful as you'd expect, while Teflon Tel Aviv's revision of "Color Me" is opaque, sun-kissed and more than a little spaced-out.

Halloween EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: GRFF 003. Rel: 24 Jun 20
  1. Breakund (6:22)
  2. Intentos Fallidos (6:10)
  3. Buildin (6:08)
  4. Jack O'Lantern (5:55)
Review: When Braik made his debut earlier this year with an EP of retro-futurist breakbeat/tech-house/techno fusions, it was released on the most unlikely of formats: a CD-ROM. We suspect he'll get more praise and plays for this follow-up, which marks his first appearance on wax. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the chiming, acid-flecked deep breaks shuffle of opener "Breakund", to the funky acid bass, psychedelic electronics, creepy melodies and snappy house beats of closer "Jack O'Lantern". Sandwiched in between you'll the bold synth-string stabs, squelchy alien bass and jacking drums of "Intentos Fallidos", as well as the funky, sharply defined 21st century electro shuffle of "Buildin".

  1. Blanked Out (2:16)
  2. Flote (6:23)
  3. Swerl (5:34)
  4. SMP (4:52)
Review: Leeds lad Chekov was one of the first artists Shanti Celeste turned to when she launched Peach Discs with Housework pal Gramrcy back in 2017. Here he returns to action with his first solo EP since and it's a bit of a beauty. He beginnings with the immersive, sunrise-ready ambient swell of "Blanked Out", where layered synthesizer motifs flutter atop the sound of what sounds like a heavily processed recording of a babbling brook, before skipping towards the dancefloor via the beefy broken techno drums, 16-bit melodies and spacey electronic sounds of "Flote". "Swerl" is a near perfect fusion of immersive chords, bittersweet motifs, chiming melodies and crunchy house drums, while "SMP" is a deliciously wonky, low-slunk chunk of lo-fi electronica that defies easy categorization.

Valborg (12")
Cat: MOUSE 025. Rel: 23 Jun 20
  1. Valborg (7:59)
  2. The Raid (8:02)
Review: When Eric Prydz fancies offering up some forthright, warehouse-ready techno, he fires up the Mouseville label and dons the Cirez D alias. Clearly, he's in a rave-igniting mood right now, because this two-tracker is the first Cirez D outing - and Mouseville release - for almost two years. There's a definite "massive room" vibe emerging from A-side "Valborg", where decidedly foreboding lead lines and ghostly chords ride a chunky, Drumcode-friendly techno beat. The saucer-eyed, hands-aloft "festival techno" feel continues on flipside "The Raid", which cleverly peppers a house-tempo rhythm track with the sort of raw, razor-sharp riffs more often found in neo-trance productions.

  1. Gamma (5:22)
  2. Ora (6:46)
  3. Gamma (Piezo remix) (6:27)
  4. Gamma (Beta Librae remix) (3:54)
Review: Brussels' Cleveland has made a name for himself with excellent, left of centre drops on ESP Institute, Hivern Discs and others in the past. Now he's up on Kalahari Oyster Cult with more adventurous freakery that deals in outsider grooves and playful synth acrobatics that positively demand your attention. "Gamma" comes on with a steady broken beat that carries some wild lead hooks that show off Cleveland's confidence with his kit. "Ora" is equally marked out by dazzling analogue brushstrokes and expertly crafted percussion to send body and mind whirling. Then on the flip Piezo and Beta Librae both remix "Gamma", veering from tough, bass-led drum funk to cosmic incantations respectively.

  3. Hodge - "Signal" (5:39)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Needs is back with its fifth installment of charity-raising goodness from some seriously quality producers. This time the gauntlet is thrown down by the increasingly prolific DJ Normal 4, who wields some of his signature breakbeats over a cheeky synth that nods to Da Hool for a dark and deadly roller. Israeli duo Red Axes pop up fresh from outings on !K7 and Phantasy Sound for the worldly percussion and mystical atmosphere of "Treacksheni" before Bristol bass-wielding techno titan Hodge finishes the package off with the stunning, dramatic undulations of "Signal," making this a collection of tracks that all feed into the same vein of rhythmically adventurous, moody club music.

  7. Morning To Loose (5:16)
  8. Dance Or Die (6:16)
  9. Small Town Yoky 11 (5:37)
Review: Libertine's 14th release is something of a beast: a double-EP from sometime My Own Jupiter Producer Do Or Die that squeezes in nine impressively varied tracks. The fast-rising producer's roots are of course in techno and electro, but he's not shy in exploring every avenue of these wide-ranging genres. For proof, compare and contrast the acid-fired, new wave-influenced bubbliness of "Galactic Bang Bang", the fast-paced acid-electro intensity of "Blackmail", the Italo-disco style throb-job "Morning To Lose", and the chiming, all-action cheeriness of quirky closing cut "Small Town Yoky 11". The rest of the double-pack maintains this interconnected eclecticism, portraying Do Or Die as a producer with a head full of ideas and an eccentric musical vision of his own.

  3. Lord Have Mercy (5:12)
  4. Repose (5:13)
Review: Eusebeia returns to re:st after time spent traversing labels like Mindtrick and Western Lore, bringing that strung out dub techno ambience to bear on four more electronic outliers for the experimental corner of your record collection. "Cardinal" is a slow lurching, hugely atmospheric piece that moves like a sound installation, while "Pray" drops some more discernible beats around haunting fugues that take a little hint of Jon Hassell and twist it to some dark designs. "Lord Have Mercy" keeps the dread up, using choral tones to offset the onset of heavy, heavy bass. "Repose" finishes the set with some lighter ambient electronics marked out with crunchy percussion echoing in the dense but harmonic fog.

Cat: ELECTRIX 002R. Rel: 18 May 20
  1. Conduit
  2. Hashtag
  3. Conduit (Volsoc Orange Problem remix)
  4. Hashtag (Radioactive Man mix)
Review: Carl Finlow, aka electro main-man Silicon Scally, originally released the Boot Loop EP on Billy Nasty's Electrix label back in 2013 - an aeon ago in real terms but a blink of an eye to any electro devotee. Such is the quality of the music that it's well deserving of a repress, not least given the fearsome appetite for this kind of electro now compared to seven years ago. "Conduit" and "Hashtag" are quintessential Finlow cuts, wriggling and writhing with snappy sound design riveted to the machine funk rhythm section. On the flip, Volsoc's "Orange Problem" mix of "Conduit" slips a few more melodic elements into the mix, and Radioactive Man flips "Hashtag" into a gnarly, noisy workout bowling in from leftfield.

  4. Liquid Drive (3:19)
Review: After a break of four years in which he flirted with other labels - most notably Ekyspia - extended UR crew-member Mark Flash is back on long-time home Underground Resistance. As you'd expect, he hits the ground running with EP opener "Audiofluid", a suitably out there and intergalactic techno number high on sturdy, electro-influenced beats, foreboding riffs, tweaked acid motifs and some suitably sci-fi electronics. Flash next delivers a talbox-laden "Tuneup Beats" version for those who just want to revel in rhythm, before paying tribute to the warehouse-ready, late '80s KMS sound on retro-futurist EP highlight "Synthetic Bump". Rounding things off is "Liquid Drive", a fizzing and clattering affair that explores similar sonic territory as the fine title track.

Review: Monnom Black welcome back Fractions for more of their sonic disturbances, will acid and rugged techno weapons. For those who like hard edge, brain frying sounds with an instant impact these are perfect tunes: "NITE NRG" has a prowling synth and dystopian vibe that is impossible to escape, while "Do You Believe" is a twisted and distorted techno stomper that will make your fists and teeth clench. "All The Streets Are Silent" sounds like it is straight from Wipeout in the original Playstation console and "Hive Mind" then explodes over and over with maximal drums driving it along.

Review: Some all-Italian electro action here, as Nicola Laporchio AKA Cosmic Garden joins forces with Lunar Orbiter Program regular CEM3340 for four tracks of intergalactic dancefloor fun. They begin with a spot of "Psychoanalysis", a veritable all-action affair in which melancholic motifs stretch out atop crunchy beats and an aggressive, Drexciyan bassline, before flitting between deeper and darker sections on the similarly forthright "31 Seconds". "Square Wave" sees them opt for a more robotic sound - think tumbling, crystalline lead lines and fizzing analogue bass - while "70100" brilliantly combines the twin attractions of off-kilter electro-funk grooves and shimmering, deep space electronics.

Review: For his first outing of 2020, Kyle Hall returns to the label he founded last year, Forget The Clock, with a suitably strong five-track missive. Check first languid opener "Shark", a splash around in crystal clear waters where simmering chords, luscious pads and glassy-eyed melodic motifs stretch out over bubbly, Latin-tinged drum machine beats and a dubby bassline. Hall makes bolder strides towards the dancefloor on lo-fi house cut "Vexed", before doffing a cap to Larry Heard and Ron Trent on the gorgeous deep house positivity of "Distant". Elsewhere, "Slam Deep" joins the dots between Steve Poindexter and the 2000 Black style of jazzy broken beat, while "Channel & Transmission" is a skewed skip through wonky deep house/jazz-funk fusion.

Review: The 7th release on BLKMARKET MUSIC comes from Samuel Jabba and is the first part of the Dystopian Future series.
Samuel Jabba is the label co-founder of a new vinyl only label called From the Void Above. Hailing from Bogota, Colombia, Samuel is a young DJ and talented producer who creates music spanning different genres of electronic music.

On his debut release for Blkmarket Music, the A side starts off with his electro track 'Acid Pleasure' on A1. The A2 track 'Space Mirage' takes you on an outer space voyage focusing on the more deeper side of techno.

The B side kicks off with his heady breakbeat track 'Robotics' on the B1. On B2, Samuel takes us on a dark journey with his minimal electro track entitled 'Random Demise.'

  1. The First Rebirth (Reinier Zonneveld remix) (6:51)
  2. The First Rebirth (5:54)
Review: Bonzai is one of those labels - if you're familiar then you know exactly which side of the stylistic debate(s) the imprint falls on. A bonafide trance institution that made a name for itself back in the genre's 90s heyday, dedicated followers and disciples will be delighted to know that even with the much more techno-leaning Reinier Zonneveld on remix duties, this one is firmly in the neon end of the dance spectrum. While the alternative version holds little back, including its roots in the laser-reaching mania of the source material, the original still manages to make that seem slow by way of a ferocious and frantic pulse beat which juggernauts its way below sirens and choral samples. One thing's for sure, you're not getting away from either very easily.

  4. FU Covid-19 (4:54)
Review: There can be nothing finer than a new hit of techno direct from the D. Brian Kage is the man behind the beats here and references the current coronavirus pandemic numerous times, starting with opener "Lockdown." It's a corrugate and jacking cut run through with acid lines and airy hi hats. "Hold On Pain Ends" is a warm dub current awash with subtle synth effects and a hypnotic sense of tension, then "That Woman From Michigan" features spoken word news snippets based on advice to stay at home and stay safe while acid lines undulate below in ever deeper circles. "FU Covid-19" is the tense, angsty techno banger you might expect of such a title.

Kalamazoo EP (140 gram vinyl 12")

  3. Halfway (5:57)
  4. Just Let Me Go (5:58)
Review: Donnell Knox and Mark Hawkins, better known as D-Knox and Marquis Hawkes respectfully, team up for a collaborative EP on Sonic Mind that speaks to their respective roots in underground techno reaching back to the 90s. "Kalamazoo" is a tough and clattering jacker with out-of-phase organ lines to send your mind spinning, while "Not The DX100" brings things front and centre for a comparatively direct, acidic workout. "Halfway" ramps up the melodic content as a displaced vocal celebrates Kalamazoo's location between Chicago and Detroit, and then "Just Let Me Go" completes the set with a tough and bumping vocal house cut.

ORKL 0114 Series 03 (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: ORKL 011403. Rel: 27 May 20
  1. Track 1 (6:25)
  2. Track 2 (5:41)
  3. Track 3 (4:53)
  4. Track 4 (5:51)
Review: Die Orakel's superb "0114 Series" - a trilogy of 12" singles from Frankfurt artists paying tribute to the turn-of-the-90s Bleep & Bass sound of the Steel City - concludes via a suitably bass-heavy four-tracker from Koga. It's not pure Yorkshire bleep by any means, but the untitled tracks certainly include many knowing nods to the style (think deep and weighty sub-bass, alien electronics and an intoxicating, sci-fi fired late-night mood. Interestingly, Koga's extensive use of breakbeats throughout is perhaps closer in tone to the "Bleep and Breaks" sound that sprung up in London from early 1990 onwards, though the boldness of the bass is thoroughly in keeping with the aesthetics of Warp's early Rob Gordon-mastered releases. Either way, all four cuts are superb, whether or not you're a bleep aficionado.
