Review: This archival release on Organic Analogue digs back into the prolific '90s period of Swedish techno maverick Jean-Louis Huhta, aka Dungeon Acid. These days he releases on iDEAL, Fit Sound, Borft and Klasse Wrecks, but he cut his techno teeth on labels like Hybrid, Svek and H. Productions. Clad in artwork details by Swedish graffiti legend Nug, Wormhole Of Time comprises unreleased cuts and long out-of-print jams spanning many of Huhta's aliases. The release also comes with a zine featuring photographs and an interview reflecting on Huhta's multifarious life in music.

Review: Berlin label Post Hoc makes its debut here with a fierce four track that includes S.P.T. originals and a remix from Regis. The sounds are dark and heavy from the off with 'Safety', which traps you in grainy loops and that hang in mid air. The title track is just as suspensory, this time with groaning synths that sound like moaning voices over the rickety, train-track grooves. For his remix, Regis slows things down, ups the grit. The skittish percussion skates over the loopy drums to lock you in stasis. 'Diprivan' is all fizzing synths and dystopian ambiance to close things out.

Review: Over his long and illustrious career, Dennis 'Dego' McFarlane has made music in many complimentary styles, but it's been broken beat with which he's been associated with for the least two decades. Alongside his friend and regular studio partner Kaidi Tatham, he's developed a particular strain of "bruk" that incorporates elements of jazz, electrofunk, soul, boogie, jazz-funk and, more occasionally, hip-hop. It's this fluid, attractive, synth-heavy sound that's at the heart of The Negative Positive, his first solo full-length for two years. It's as well-made, soulful, slick and musically rich as you'd expect, with a series of stellar vocal numbers joining a swathe of similarly impressive instrumentals.

Review: Overmono is a real techno-making machine that rarely makes a misstep. He's landed on Poly Kicks and XL already this year and now his entry into the long-running and legendary fabric series is another doozy. Here we have the double 12" selection featuring key tracks from it such as his own 'If U Ever' and a fantastic cut 'I Have A Dream' (feat Benjamin Zephaniah) for an LB Dub Corp album of a few years ago. Blawan's typically supersized 'Fourth Dimensional' is another big moment in an album that is jam-packed with them.

Review: Over the past few years Nick Gynn has been whipping up a storm with his loose and limber strain of trance-inflected club melters. Now he's landing in exactly the right spot to kick off 2022 alongside the good folk at EYA Records. Minting their Lonewolf series specifically, the 2000 & Something EP deals in maximal acid wrigglers with a playful but dark-tinted edge which should go down very well with the buoyant wave of psychedelic party people. Watch out for the electro stylings of 'Ritmos Obscuros', which closes out the 12" in body-popping fashion.

As always, UK and rave influences are abundant throughout the talented producer's work and this one is no exception. Review: The entrancing tribal house groove of Jerome Sydenham, Fatima Njai's and percussionist Mario Punchard's Kraftwerk channeling 'Trans Afro Express' is one of this year's biggest tracks for Rekids, which now receives a series of impressive reworks by the biggest names on the scene. Running Back's Gerd Janson delivers a sunny and blissful rework in his signature neon-lit disco style on the A side of the disc. Over on the flip, it's over to the master of minimalism - none other than Ricardo Villalobos - who takes the track deep into the afterhours with his heady makeover delivered in his idiosyncratic style.

Linked In (with Paris Brightledge) (5:55)
Review: Previously, we'd have known exactly what to expect from a brand-new Paranoid London release: TB-303 driven acid house jack-tracks. Annihilate The World and Start Again, their first EP of fresh material since 2019, bucks this trend, setting aside their beloved acid lines in favour of a more mixed-up selection of hardware-heavy workouts. Check first the droning, mind-mangling bass, hypnotic techno beats and creepy chords of the excellent title track, before admiring the breathless, psychedelic techno-jack of 'External In'. Warmer and dreamier fare is provided via melodious electro number 'The State of That', before Detroit veteran Paris Brightledge adds a wonderfully emotive, almost melancholic vocal to analogue deep house-meets-Motor City techno cut 'Linked In'.

Review: Deepchord label co-founder Mike Schommer is lesser known than his partner Rod Modell, but this new EP on Greyscale could well even things out a little. His third solo EP is a tender dub techno lullaby with distinctive vocals from Milly James. On "Come Home," the dubbed out chords ripple to infinity while James' angelic vocal lingers long in the air above, then "Breathe" slows things right down to a crawl for even deeper listening. "Cut You Down" is impressively cavernous then Deepchord remixes "Breathe" into a frosty and late night roller.

Player Three (3:03)
Review: Hector Oaks' Kaos label has been busy this year with a steady stream of various artist releases, not to mention an incendiary 12" from u.r.trax. Now comes something different which finds Oaks teaming up with singer Coco Paloma for an EP which reaches beyond the confines of techno into a more pop-oriented direction. There's still plenty of dancefloor bite in 'No Hay Manana (Club Mix)', but it feels like Paloma's voice and lyrics are the focal point of this project. 'Danger For You' sees Oaks slowing his trademark heavy-hitting sound down to frame Paloma's stunning voice in a half-time thump which could well catch a wave and bother the charts. There's more late night action to be enjoyed on 'Chasing Highs' and then 'Player Three' switches things up once again with a pivot between trap and D&B that lands smoother than you might well expect.

Review: The recent resurgence in interest in mid 1990s ambient techno has been one of the most positive trends of recent times, primarily because it has resulted in reissues of some long-forgotten and genuinely overlooked gems. A Positive Life's sophomore album Synaethetic, which was originally released by Beyond Records in 1994, falls into that category. Offering a suitably intergalactic, heady blend of undulating, psychedelic acid lines, ambient sound washes, bubbly beats, far-sighted sounds and stretched-out epics, it's an album that's as close to the original ambient techno blueprint as you're likely to find. If you love that style, it's a genuine must-have.

Review: Anonymous label Tartan kicks off with two tracks that should pique the interest of anyone who seeks out unusual swerves to spice up their DJ sets. On the A side, 'Took My Heart Away' fuses uncanny sounds from rolling thunder to South Asian vocals, strapped to a brooding beat that should be compatible with the chugging crowd. On the flip, 'Sun' nudges up the tempo a touch and spaces things out considerably, creating a swirling deepest techno mood which might well herald the odd sunrise given half a chance.

Review: The I Was Never Here EP is said to possibly be the last ever offering from Gameboy, which is sombre news as this has been a superb series that first started 15 years ago. Sakskobing Russia has the pleasure of serving it up and once again, tune tunes from Ibrahim Alfa Jnr, an artist from London, are fresh indeed. His take on electro on busy and melodic, with melancholic and pixelated chords marbling the forlorn and slow-motion electro of opener 'Waking The Others.' 'In Dreams' is another insular cut with crisp hits and glassy melodies like no other and 'Visions & Memories' then gets choppy with busted up beats, scraping perc and all manner of hits.

Review: Packed with percussive energy, thrusting basslines and mind-altering electronic motifs, this collaboration between long-serving Swede Patrick Seich and rising star Sandra Mosh deserves to be heard by far more than the Drumcode faithful. The pair set their stall out on EP opener 'Rhythmic Reflection', where whispered vocal snippets and psychedelic acid lines rise above breathless techno drums and a throbbing sequenced bassline, before opting for a dark, wayward and more intense techno sound on 'Synchrony'. They intensify their collaborative sound further on 'PPMV1', in the process making great use of twisted electronic riffs and hissing ride cymbals, while closing cut 'Soft Light' brilliantly fuses creepy electronic melodies, trance-inducing TB-303 lines, bouncy drums and clandestine chords.

The music is all about rugged machine funk, busted loops and lo-fi house grooves that recall the greats like Moodymann. 'Str8 Crooked' is the most loose and clattering of the lot with its knackered bassline stay down low. The amusingly titled 'Build Back Better Sweatshops' is scuffed up deep house a la STL and 'Episcopi Vagantes' is an epic 16 minute tune with spinning hi hats, wonky synthesis and plenty of cavernous soundscapes to explore at 5am on a darkened dance floor.

If you don't know the name u-Ziq by now then you've not been paying enough attention. Also referred to as Mike Paradinas, he's the guy in charge of inimitable UK label Planet Mu, which has been at the forefront of audibly varied dance music since 1995 that remains as close to IDM as you get in today's age.

That trend continues on this collaborative effort with past Mu signing Hanna Davidson, or Mrs Jynx. A record that was created as part of a therapeutic healing process in spring 2021, a time when both artists were dealing not just with the wight of a pandemic but, more significantly, for them, deep personal grief and profound loss, the result is a melodic masterpiece, an opiate opus of deep dive rhythms and noises.

Review: Mihail P brings us a 4 tracker, including a special John Shima remix. We start with the title track "Relinquish", a nice journey through deep space at a modest tempo. It features electro breaks rhythm patterns and harmonics to send you in to orbit. Following is "Shifting", a more acid tech vibe and straight 4/4 chugger, in line with proper Detroit / UK lushness from the 90's and forward. Flip to the B side for "Reliquish John Shima remix". It's hard to say which track is the peak, but this one's a contender. John Shima is known for his signature bleepy, but danceable sound. He adds layers of synth programming intelligence and great basslines as usual. Finally the B2 "Close to Zero" is the closing tune. Similar to the opener, we find more electro breaks, synth basses and a cool pad to complete the perfect journey.

It's the latter formation which takes the lead on this new 12" for Welt Discos, with 'Karnak' revelling in a cascade of heart-wrenching synths with a snappy funk to the drums. 'Pledge' strikes a unique sweet spot where minimal wave and dubwise steppers meet, offering a hitherto unexplored dimension to the Italian man in Dublin town. '893' brings a more classic electro-techno flavour for the uptempo crew, and then 'Universal Balance' smooths things out with blown out piano chords atop a relaxed machine funk beat.

'Scope Zone' is a great meeting point between cosmic synth work, spaced out breaks and retro house action. It's got a fat bassline that powers it onwards and some mice subtle prog melody. Review: "Way back in the 1990s, Mark Hand, Neil Iceton & Jez Nicholl channelled their love of sci-fi-fired Motor City techno into a string of inspired releases under the alias Cubic Space Collective.

After reuniting for a memorable machine jam at Freerotation festival in 2016, Hand & Iceton headed back into the studio for a one-off session and recorded 'Holiday in Beta Centauri', a musical love letter to Mad Mike and the rest of Detroit's most militant futurist techno crew.

Sending us surging skywards via 'Binary System', where lilting lead lines, fizzing electronics and enveloping chords dance atop a snappy, cymbal-heavy drum machine rhythm, before 'Arps in Hyperspace' sees them step things up a notch via layered waves of synths, sparkling melodies and a driving, hyper-speed groove.

The North-East-based twosome then attempt to warm us to the core in the shape of 'Rigil': restless organ stabs, undulating Michigan bass, alien electronics, psychedelic acid lines and Galaxy 2 Galaxy style chords catching the ear. Bringing us gently back down to earth, they complete their deep space mission with 'Beyond The Nebula (Holiday in Beta Centauri)', a bustling electro number full of stabbing analogue bass, star-burst electronics, meditative ambient chords that shimmer full of night-sky melodies.

A fine return to action for this Teesside UR-loving techno twosome... 3,167 miles away in Detroit, their achievement will be noted."

Review: Richie Hawtin will also be intrinsically linked to techno from across many different eras. He pioneer the minimal sound, was a master of acid, and more recently took tech to the bog room masses. This series finds the Minus boss and constant innovator reconnecting with the dance floor after last year's Time Warps EP. He kicks this one off with the 303 introspections of 'Acid King' (Full Tilt Mix) before offering up a dark and intense Vox version. The FUSE Bass dub is a wild machine workout to melt your mind and the Bonus Beats are for all the hard-working DJs out there needing a serious tool

Figuring Out This Damn Jetpack (5:27)
Review: Tristan Watkins is exploring a horse-themed concept in earnest with his work as Phonopsia on his burgeoning Horse Category label. There's an inherent wonkiness to the sound on this third entry which possibly hints to the meaning behind this aesthetic, with 'Prepaternal (Paternal Revision)' leading in with some delightfully off-kilter synth action around a light and skipping house groove. 'Secrets Of The Pedal Bone' meanwhile deals in a quirky sound somewhere in the region of chiptune but with a little Ceephaxian bite, and 'Ooze' deals in some potent, dislocated techno. 'Figuring Out This Damn Jetpack' goes more explicitly towards 8-bit synth lines, but then gives them a walloping beat, making for some of the most distinctive club gear we've heard in a while.

Review: RECOMMENDED
It's hard not to be very impressed by Glaswegian electronic experimenter Pub. According to mythology (well, the internet), he started making music at the tender age of 14, and within three years had started his own label, Ampoule Records, since going on to release for the likes of Talent Hoover, Earplug and Vertical Form, all of which should feel blessed to have him on board.

Single is basically a compendium of his trilogy of EPs on Ampoule, now 20 years young. To describe the contents as dub techno would be unfair and over-simplistic, but it's certainly not a million miles from that camp. Stripped down but strangely detailed, this is the sound of a great soundsystem revealing the hidden depths of tracks that might otherwise feel very minimal, ambient soundscapes that ebb and flow intertwined with the more dancefloor friendly efforts. In short, you will not tire of these tunes.

Review: Clommunity is a label from the good people of Kyiv club Closer, which is one of the most revered and respected in Europe right now. This third outing deals in the sort of deep and intimate sounds you can expect to hear in the club on any given night and it comes from Closer resident Yone-ko, who is a techno maestro from Japan but currently based in Berlin. There is a melancholy to thee tunes, with their wispy pads and dreamy chords, while the rolling, scuffed up drums lock you into a state of trance. Minimal in design yet maximal in impact, this is high-grade stuff.

Review: Only 100 copies of this mystical and deeply moody 12" from Zimp Recordings main man Filthy Rich, meaning you'll have to act fast if you want one. It's well worth picking up though, not least because opener 'The Kraken (Davy Jones Mix)' is a deliciously clandestine chunk of underwater techno full of nightmare-inducing spoken word vocals and creepy electronics. The EP's other significant moment is 'Two Tone Bass', a stomping slab of fuzz-soaked industrial techno that remixer Randolph also turns into a slamming, lo-fi techno assault on the senses. Elsewhere, 'Wiff Waff (Wallpaper Mix)' is a bouncy techno roller that (somewhat hilariously) samples speeches by Alexander Boris De Pfeffel Johnson, and 'Stinky Funk' is a thrusting masterclass in weighty techno-funk.

Review: 80s Techno Tracks Volume 1 was originally a CD-only compilation put out back in 2019 by the ZYX Music label. It has proved so popular that it now comes on a special vinyl release that packs in eight of the best tunes to feature on the CD. It makes for a fun and throwback listen that very much chimes with the current trend for these sorts of sounds - hi-nrg, eurobeat, EBM, synth-pop, industrial and new beat with a bit of proto-acid house town in for good measure. It is the unmistakable characteristics of the machines that made these tunes that make them so instantly lovable and transportive.

The No Symbols/Mistry Muzik chief brings on the dark subterranean vibes on opening cut 'Fourth Time', while the stirring drums of 'High Five' will entrance you, awash in a haunting and multi-layered atmosphere. Over on the flip, there's some deep dubstep served up on the meditative polyrhythms of 'Legs Eleven' and ending with the low end theory of 'Tough One' which will engulf you in a wall of sound.

Two tracks of serious strangeness: timestretched vocals and repetitious yeahs blossom between the beat-thickets of Melchior's 'Yeah X 3', while many more percussive hits and cuts and clicks and pops and booms come courtesy of Walter's B-side, 'Xvive'. It's an impressive first foray for Maria Newyen's new imprint Scious; let's hope future 12"s stay just as weird.

Review: WaWuWe is one of many alias of dub techno stylist Sebastian Mullaert. It is revered for his most deep techno cuts and this fifth missive on his own self titled label is another deft and atmospheric offering. 'Track 1' pairs the sort of deeply buried drums that get anyone in a trance but layers some celestial keys way up top. The second tune is less smooth, with a more turbulent bassline and drums that rock back and forth on their heels. 'Track 3' closes with sombre synth drones that make a devastating emotional impact.

Blurring the lines between every genre this side of 1990s hardcore, Traditions 16 is a melting pot exploration that brings in elements of new romantic pumps ('Nos Noctium Dominarium'), swampy big beat drama ('Chaosophia777') dense, acidic new beat ('Extinction For The Psychic Sustenance') sleazy rock ('616 The Number Of The Beat') and plenty more in between. A truly unique experience, if you enjoyed Wilid's output as Les Points, you'll be all over this.

Review: Fresh from the label's second release 'Robot Romance', supported by the likes of Laurent Garnier, Fred P, Jane Fitz, Jennifer Cardini, Rossko and more. David Agrella returns via his spaced-out house EP 'Freedom Unfolding'. Remixes are delivered by London favourite N-Gynn (Pleasure Club) known for drawing on left-field, ravey sounds and esteemed German live techno act and Muller Records/Acid Orange boss Beroshima.
Elastic basslines and tumbling percussion unfasten the A-Side with 'Walking Loud' as sinister synths convulse around the beat before N-Gynn provides a frisky reshape with sharp snares, golden keys and subtle, loopy vocal samples on a chuggier tip. The eclectic experience continues on the B-Side with title track 'Freedom Unfolding' as swinging basslines carry dream-like pads and fluttering samples, while Beroshima's acid-infused, broken beat rework provides an anthemic finale to the release.

On Phase 3 we've got four stern and austere techno cuts with serious attitude; whether it's the pitch black TBM punishment of opener 'Flatline' featuring Mad Johnny's screaming vocals, the old-school rave mish-mash of 'Cold' (Sex) incorporating classic motifs like Menstasms, breakbeats, whistles and warehouse techno aesthetics, or the extreme noise terror of 'Focus On That Form' on the B-side that veers violently between jungle and gabber. BJARKI will also serve as a creative platform to launch a wealth of forthcoming audiovisual projects, so stay tuned. We didn't hear any more from him for a fair while, but then in 2018 he resurfaced with some quality tech house gear via the Musik Is Egall label out of Cologne. Now Hess is back for a third instalment with 'Don't Be Anybody Else', a mid-tempo chugger with an acidic bite just crying out for a dark n' dirty basement. Die Maschinen Kontrollieren Uns ("The Machines Are Controlling Us"). was the Frankenthal native's second album released in 2007, where the masked crusader presented a whopping sixteen tracks. A true zeitgeist of a golden era in minimal techno, tracks like 'Brainstopper' with its atonal assortment of blips and bleeps underpinned by clipped rhythms will really take you back to the old says, as will the glitchy micro-funk of "Die Maschinen sind Gestrandet" (Second Edition) or the deep tech house of "Wellenreiter (2.0)" could have been played aboard a Sunday boat party along the River Main circa 2008.
