Another Bugged In Selection & Bugged Out Mix
Erol ALKAN/VARIOUS
K7
Cat: K7 294LP. Rel: 31 Aug 12
  1. Amin Peck - "Girl On Me" (instrumental edit)
  2. Ron Hardy - "Sensation" (Obi Blanche edit)
  3. Model 500 - "No Ufo's" (D-mix)
  4. Unovidual & Tara Cross - "Like I Am/Comme Je Suis" (Based On The Sling & Samo edit)
  5. Spandex - "The Bull" (Erol Alkan rework)
  6. Children Of The Night - "It's A Trip" (Mike Hitman Wilson's Psychedelic remix)
  7. Jan Hammer Group - "Don't You Know"
  8. Adjagas - "Mun Ja Mun" (instrumental)
  9. Buffalo Springfield - "Expecting To Fly"
  10. The Space Lady - "Major Tom (Coming Home)"
Review: Erol Alkan's 2005 Bugged Out mix was a gateway release for many, soundtracking the entrance into club land, yet also introducing these virgin ears to more esoteric strains of music via the accompanying Bugged In Selection. Some seven years on, Alkan and the evergreen club brand have revisited the concept with a second edition, and like the inaugural release, the Phantasy Sound boss's ever lasting love for the vinyl format has seen a selection of tracks make the translation to this double vinyl release. Six tracks from the Bugged Out mix appear, with the Italo disco of Amin Peck brushing shoulders with Model 500 and an Obi Blanche edit of the Ron Hardy classic "Sensation", while the Bugged In Selection sees some psyche-folk fare from Buffalo Springfield and Space Lady among other gems.

SPEICHER 101
Cat: KOMEX 101. Rel: 10 May 18
  1. Hidden Beauties (7:17)
  2. The Dansant (6:40)
Review: Next up on Kompakt's esteemed Spiecher series is Brazilian techno heroine with the powerful and adrenalised acid techno epic "Hidden Beauties" taking you back to a time in the '90s when the likes of Laurent Garnier and Hardfloor reigned supreme - absolutely epic stuff! The jackathon continues on the B side with second offering "The Dansant" with its violent whirling bassline that doesn't rely on the that little silver Roland box like the previous side but still packing as much punch, its aggressive syncopated 909 rhythms rapid firing away in convincingly old school fashion. Just fresh off of it's 100th release, ANNA was a great choice thereafter, following up some killer grooves for top labels such as Turbo, Terminal M, Get Physical and Matador's Rukus imprint to name but a few.

  2. Entireless (Donato Dozzy Genesis Chamber mix) (9:20)
  3. Everything Thrown Away (12:01)
  4. Pop Life (with Eltron John) (9:05)
Review: Area returns to his Kimochi label to deliver a rich musing on ambient approaches from a techno mindset, and he's brought some esteemed friends along for the ride. "Through The Wall" is a magnificent slice of melancholy that leads the A-side in a cloud of billowing chords that undulate through modulation, while "Everything Thrown Away" takes a more intimate approach with quietly drifting synth tones and subtle FX processing. Donato Dozzy's "Genesis Chamber" mix of "Entireless" is a more extravagant affair with layers of noise and feedback working into the beatless space, and Eltron John's guest spot on "Pop Life" adds further aquatic shapes to the fluid tones contained within.

Review: After a quiet 2016 thus far Och's Autoreply label is finally back in action with a frankly fantastic selection of workouts from Mark Broom. In keeping with the style Broom has been exercising in new Perbec jams with Baby Ford, this is more restrained than the muscular techno Broom can also be known for. Instead, you get expressive, satisfying house tracks such as "18.2" and the neatly pumping "10" with its killer array of synths to satisfy the dancefloor and the mind in equal measure. Avoiding unnecessary fireworks in favour of perfectly chosen and shaped elements, this is a glittering demonstration of Broom's cool-headed approach in the studio.

  3. Traffic Light (8:43)
  4. Hit & Run (6:39)
Review: Second time around for Cab Drivers' fantastic debut EP, which the Berlin-based duo initially recorded and released way back in 1996. As the original EP did, this reissue begins with the crunchy, Motor City-influenced techno throb of "Seat Belt" - all mind-altering, fast-paced bass, spaceship horn stabs and bustling beats - before moving on to the sub-heavy hustle of "Traffic Light". Over on side B, "Traffic Light" is a pounding slab of intergalactic techno-jack laden with alien-sounding synthesizer motifs, while "Hit and Run" combines darting, funk-fuelled space boogie motifs with driving drums and another restless, all-action electronic bassline.

  3. Dr Blowfins Black Storm Stabilizing Spheres
  4. Song Of The Green Whale
  5. Lake Haze
  6. Mission To Ociya Syndor & Back
  7. Under Sea Disturbances
Review: A big Juno bear hug goes to the folks from Tresor for releasing a string of sublime re-issues this year. The latest is Drexciya's seminal Harnessed The Storm long player, generally a much darker affair than Neptune's Lair, which itself was reissued earlier this year. It is hallmarked by longer, more exploratory tracks, full of sinister twists and turns. The stormy electro thunder of "Digital Tsunami" is perhaps the standout moment here, closely followed by the subterranean squelch of "Soul Of The Sea". "Dr Blowfins Black Storm Stabilizing Spheres" has an eerie crackle that predates the current vogue for dark atmospheric techno by nearly a decade, while the robotic key melody on "Song Of The Green Whale" marks it as the LP's most playful moment. Highly recommended for electro and techno purists alike.

Review: Dust, NYC's premier lo-fi techno art collective previously heard on Mannequin, are back on Mike Simonetti's 2MR with Agony Planet, a collection of raw and sinister science fiction journeys through the dark side. Many tracks on here capture the zeitgeist of early 90's Canadian techno found on labels like Plus 8 or Strobe but done respectfully and truly admirably. Highlights being the grinding acid overdrive of "Alien Prey" or "Venus" (in particular!) or the rusty and dusty throwback euphoria of "Xenocide" or "Tell Me" reminiscent of classics by Cybersonik or F.U.S.E.

  1. Pink Panzer (6:39)
  2. Argonaut (5:33)
Review: The 110th release from Kompakt Extra comes from Extrawelt, a long-serving electronic band from Hamburg that has previously impressed via albums and singles on Traum Schallplatten, Border Community, Darkroom Dubs and Cocoon Recordings. They naturally hit the ground running with "Pink Panzer", a bustling affair that mixes live drum breakbeats and tough machine percussion with moody, booming bass, creepy strings and evocative, ever-building tech-house electronics. Flipside "Argonaut" is an altogether sleazier and heavier affair full of thrusting, non-stop distorted bass, redlined post-electro drums and all manner of mind-mangling electronic effects. It's effectively the Yang to the A-side's Ying and, like its' predecessor, very good indeed.

  1. Bangalore (12:29)
  2. Love Lost (6:20)
  3. Start Trying (6:18)
Review: Japanese artist Sunao Gonno's idiosyncratic sound has appeared on labels such as Endless Flight, International Feel and Beats In Space over the years, where he's dabbled in shoegaze, kosmische and psychedelia as heard on 2015's breathtaking "Remember The Life Is Beautiful" or on last year's contemporary jazz outing "In Circles" with Kazuhiko Masumura. An accomplished DJ also, he's no stranger to Berlin's Panorama Bar, where Nick Hoppner (Touch From A Distance) has long held a residency. The two artists collaborate for the first time on "Lost", featuring three sublime sonic journeys: go deep into the exotic on "Bangalore" with its world music influence, or chill to the vivid downbeat tones of "Love Lost" until "Start Trying" returns to the program with its neon-lit aesthetic plus breakbeats reminiscent of the rave era.

Review: Having previously shored up at Finale Sessions, Public System and Proper Trax in the past, Grey People makes a move towards Torn Hawk's Valcron Video with an EP of machine magic that touches on all manner of moods. "Cryogenically Frozen" is a hard-hitting slice of club tackle to get bodies jacking and sweat pouring, while "Coma Tunnel" takes a warmer approach without losing the boxy beats. Meanwhile the label boss saddles up on the B side for a dreamy remix of "Coma Tunnel" that ramps up the reverb and creates a long form surrealist dream out of the original's component parts.

Review: For a brief moment Hermans are cut free from their shackles and venture out from the black dungeon, dragging xylophones made from Kraken bones and drums fashioned out of reptile skins the duo summon a battle chant from deep within. Scores of allies join, endlessly banging the same rhythm relentlessly until the clouds draw and the red sun is no longer visible. A Basic Soul Unit appears from the murkiness and descends upon the racket, bringing with him booming thunder and electric lightning, a dark army marching alongside him. The massive beat continues for days, shaking all those that hear it. Slowly and steadily, the din subsides, the clouds part and the sun returns as Hermans retreat back to the darkness to wait patiently until they are called upon again. ZAIRES is the third of 12 releases from Z O D I A C 4 4. One for each sign of the stars and then Z O D I A C 4 4 is forever dead and gone. Forever

Review: While now revered just as much for his kaleidoscopic, all-action club tracks as his similarly colourful downtempo explorations, it should never be forgotten that Lone began life as a maker of skewed, head-in-the-clouds beats. For this fine contribution to the DJ Mix series, the DJ/producer has decided to take us on a whirlwind tour of his influences and inspirations, brilliantly joining the dots between sunrise-friendly ambient, melodious electronic, blazed hip-hop, dazzling experimental beat-scapes, loved-up house and futurist techno. It's a thrillingly eclectic set, but one that holds together brilliant. While this is in part due to the use of a number of his own productions, it's also testament to his immense skill as a DJ.

  1. The Man From Another Place (original mix)
  2. Arecibo
  3. The Man From Another Place (Timothy J Fairplay remix)
  4. The Man From Another Place (Cottam remix)
Review: Hailing from sunny Los Angeles, Plastic Love Records kicks off our first release with an EP from label co-boss Jimmy Maheras. Maheras made his debut in 2011 with his Space Jam EP on the Crosstown Rebels edit sub-label, Rebellion. Since then he's released remixes and singles on Strainjjur, Riff Raff, Supernature, and Left'd.

Maheras's two original tracks showcase his depth with The Man From Another Place being squarely aimed at the big room dance floor and the second track, Arecibo, bringing a little Kraftwerkesque funk. We've commissioned Timothy J Fairplay (Crimes Of The Future) and Cottam (Aus Music / Ruff Draft) for two very unique remixes. Fairplay crunches down the original melody and throws it over the famed amen break to give TMFAP a hands in air late night feel while Cottam's remix brings the dreamy melody closer to acid with storming late night kick ready to knock down a wall.

  3. Alarmed (6:31)
  4. Smash (4:41)
Review: Back in March, Jordon Alexander AKA Mall Grab returned to the Looking For Trouble imprint he founded in 2018 with his first missive of the year. Even by his standards, it was a wild, all-action affair, and this follow-up is no less giddy or sweaty. "Take Down Enemies" is a blistering, all-action affair, with Alexander peppering a stomping industrial techno beat with tight acid motifs and cut-up hip-hop vocals. Under the Special Request alias, Paul Woolford offers up a surging, scintillating rework that adds huge dollops of techno-funk to the Australian's slamming original. Elsewhere, "Alarmed" is a more psychedelic and trance-inducing take on Alexander's big room techno template, while "Smash" is a thunderous voyage through body-popping electro nastiness.

Review: Mall Grab's metamorphosis into a big room techno master has accelerated in recent times, with this four-track chunk of hands-in-the-air anthems coming hot on the heels of the similarly tough but uplifting "Take Down Enemies" EP. The star of the show is undoubtedly opener "Positive Energy Forever", a slamming affair that peppers a surging, foreboding techno groove (think Beltram's "Energy Flash", and you're close, with the kind of raw, mind-altering electronic motifs more often found on overblown trance tracks. There's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere on the EP though, with the "Brown Album"-era Orbital intensity of "There Is A" and the sweaty, breakbeat-driven, Hoover-bass-propelled madness of "Sheer Fuck-offness" standing out.

After releases on Aesthetic Audio, ART, Ornate amongst others, Miles esteemed reputation for discerning House & Techno both as a DJ & producer ensure this release is another pure piece of artistry. Not one to compromise, Miles delivers yet again. 'Obliquity' is a dub techno slice of hypnosis! Emancipate gives us a beautiful string rendition amongst haunting lead lines, while 'Whispers' goes beyond the deep, down into ethereal emotive territory, giving the full release a nice snapshot spectrum of this mans work. Superb release.

Basic Motion

  2. Basic Motions (6:04)
  3. Sensible Heat (6:26)
  4. OBD (6:30)
Review: Frankfurt's Live At Robert Johnson has become a fine-tuned breeding ground for local production talent, with Benjamin Milz the latest graduate. A regular behind the decks at the associated venue, as well as other German institutions like Leipzig's IfZ and Frankfurt's Hafen 2, Milz gets the chance to extend himself as a producer with this fine Basic Motion 12" for LARJ. The four cuts suggest Milz has put in plenty of hours in the studio, ranging from the intense rush of "Dc2" to the more psychedelically charged raw Chicago emotion of the title track. Face down and Milz goes for a more explicitly punchy house style with "Sensible Heat," whilst "OBD" comes off like a B side from a Mathematics curio. Tip!

  1. Around You, Around Me (6:49)
  2. Don't Tear My Soul Apart (6:10)
  3. It's Been A Long Time (12:36)
Review: Fresh from delivering the dirt-encrusted intensity of The Anarchy EP on Berceuse Heroique, Morah pops up on Zurich institution Lux Rec. The fast-rising producer begins with "Around You, Around Me", a sparse-but-energy packed fusion of wild acid lines, rising and falling, high register melodies, and sweaty, full-throttle drum machine hits. "Don't Tear My Soul Apart" drops the tempo, but persists with the bold electronic riffs (it's kind of like the original 1988 version of The KLF's "What Time Is Love" after a session smoking crack), while standout "It's Been A Long Time" whips off its shirt for a muscular dance around the altar of mid-80s EBM.

Review: Sweltering, humid emotion permeates the gauzy atmosphere and rolling basslines on Neotnas' latest. The tracks here combine the artists' loves of junglism, 'ardcore, stoned ambience, and classic house.
Taken together, it's a batch of instantly nostalgic grooves and future / past chillout rave reimaginings.

Dickens Tracks Volume 2
Cat: SL 13. Rel: 28 Apr 14
  1. Cross Check
  2. Star Of Hope
  3. The Magic Flute
Review: Following on from his 2010 "Dickens Tracks" EP
for London's PAL SL, OCH drops the eagerly awaited 2nd edition to the
series. As a producer his sound stands out through fusing stripped-back,
jackin' drums with sharp, swinging hats always adding an injection of
analog warmth through sparse, synth arrangements. A1's "Cross Check"
stays true to the labels early roots by using the bare essentials of
house music to create a hypnotic, highly effective floor-mover. On the
flip, "Star Of Hope" is an interlude, set-starter or vinyl DJ tool. B2's
"The Magic Flute" has a relaxed, sunny Chicago feeling teasing with
lush samples, driving bass and rock-solid beats. Mastered at D&M.

Daily Struggles EP
Daily Struggles EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FINAWHITE 003. Rel: 14 Sep 15
  1. Living In A Bottle (7:37)
  2. Taurus (6:58)
  3. To Digi (6:13)
Review: For the latest slice of magic on the evermore impressive Fina White, The Organ Grinder, aka
Cayne Ramos, continues with a prolific run of releases which has planted his expansive productions straight in the bags of discerning club commanders like Move D, Brawther, and
Laurent Garnier. Showcasing a broad, tasteful musical pallet, studied studio skills, and a sharp ear in the mix, The Daily Struggles EP is a fine arrangement of house and techno that will find itself at home on the uncompromising warehouse floors, the sun-drenched courtyards, and in the darker, seedier moments of the night, when only the strong remain, and the weak have long since departed.

Wasting no time, the Organ Grinder leads the line with Living in a Bottle, a classic house number on an MCDE tip, laced with infectious vocal samples, muffled Rhodesian keys and groovy, beddeddown bass lines, conducted by a tight back line of crisp, snappy, dusty drum parts.

On the flip side The Organ Grinder moves from the barbecue to the main room with some Berghain sized techno on B1. Taurus is for those who love those big, pulsating kicks, clattering hi hats and deep, penetrating bass notes that work so well in Spartan warehouses at 3am.

Moving the clock along to 7am and relocating to the beach on B2 with Too Digi The Organ Grinder brings the Daily Struggles EP to a head with perhaps the strongest track of the release - a proper cut of deep, tripped out Herbert-esque grooves and vintage keys revolving around an infectious, warped disco vocal. The sort of stuff jocks like Move D and Zip deploy to such devastating effect in the after hours.

Review: Last year, someone set up an online petition calling for Warp to re-release The Other People Place's brilliant Lifestyles Of The Laptop Cafe album on wax. Happily, Warp has responded to the strength of feeling from electronica fans - most of whom bristled at the high online prices for second hand copies - and re-pressed it. Drexciya man James Stinson's 2001 solo set remains a timeless electronic classic; a perfectly pitched and immaculately produced fusion of downtempo electro rhythms, spacey electronics and twinkling synthesizer melodies. In fact, you'll struggle to find a better electro album full stop, making this reissue an essential purchase for anyone not lucky enough to own an original copy.

Cause For Concern EP
Cat: AL 014. Rel: 08 Dec 14
  1. Tones & Textures
  2. Sacred Ground
  3. Divider
Review: Jordan Peak makes a stellar return to the Air London imprint this September with the 'Cause For Concern' EP, a three-track collection from the London based producer.
The ever on-point Jordan Peak has been continually delivering striking and versatile material over the past four years, releasing records via some leading labels in underground house and techno, such as Tsuba, Robsoul, Bass Culture and One Records. Here we see Jordan return to the Air London label, following his 'It's Time / Hanging By A Thread' EP on the imprint last year.
Peak kicks off the 'Cause For Concern' EP with 'Tones & Textures', a rugged groove-led workout fuelled by a bumpy, penetrating rhythm. The synthesized elements then add a warm and charming character to the composition, meandering around the percussive foundation; Peak employs ethereal pads, swirling dub echoes and resonant stabs here to create a mesmerizing and hypnotic vibe.
Following is 'Sacred Ground' which picks up the pace slightly with insistent sub tones, naturally swung organic percussion, ever evolving, tension building atmospherics and a trippy spoken-word vocal line uttering the track's title sporadically. Once again resulting in a classy, understated piece of work from this clear-cut talent.
The package is then closed with 'Divider', a brilliant construction to finish the package which sees Jordan opt for a more minimalistic approach, stripping back the drums to a sparse yet punchy vibe, while rounded low-end tones drive things along, and bubbling bell sounds, gritty stabs and aggressive bass hits are thrown into the mix intermittently.

Hecatism
Hecatism (limited 180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RSI. Rel: 29 Jul 13
  1. Hecatism
  2. Hecatism (Damon Martin remix)
  3. Hecatism (PORK INTL remix)
  4. Helioshock
Review: RSI is a new label affiliated to the Tusk Wax empire, and for their first release they look to the unexpected choice of the Posthuman duo of Rich Bevan and Josh Doherty. "Hecatism" sees the pair wander into deeper corners than their music is usually known for, trading electro breakbeats for a mid tempo production filled with resonant textures and vocal chunks that could nominally be described as house, while "Helioshock" sees them break out the 303 for some heady acid grooves. The remixes of the title track come expertly chosen also, with Disco Bloodbath resident Damon Martin taking the track even deeper into something approaching Balearic groove, and PORK INTL, who adds a distinctly more interstellar flavour to the original with its Danny Wolfers-style analogue house chords.
