  11. The Escape (2:45)
Review: Paul Purgas (Emptyset) re-issues seminal, Detroit industrial-rock album from 1989 featuring none other than techno legend Jeff Mills with original and continuous member Anthony Srock. Sharing similarities to other Midwest cross-over groups of the time such as Ministry/Revolting Cocks, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult and of course Nine Inch Nails. The foundations of Jeff Mills' influential sound can definitely be heard on tracks such as the peak time onslaught of "Rotation", "I Told You Not To Stop" (particularly of his work with Underground Resistance) or "Open Your Eyes" but there's also the jacking acid of nearby Chicago on "Now That's Funky" and pretty standard time capsules in the form of "Harmony" or "The Prosecuted" with their synth funk basslines and clanging/metallic percussion sequences (think Skinny Puppy/Frontline Assembly) crossing over into proto-techno in perfect harmony. Definitely a Motor City zeitgeist and one for the books.

OW (Drum Beat)
  1. Gene Hunt - "OW (Drum Beat)" (5:02)
  2. Wrecking Project - "S-Sonics" (3:46)
  3. Blacktail - "Now Muzik" (3:35)
  4. Innsyter - "Blimp Works" (6:09)
Review: Delroy Edward's LA Club Resource finally drops its next bombshell, this time a collaborative effort that includes three newcomers, possibly riding low-key under different aliases. Riding shotgun, you got Chicago legend Gene Hunt with the minimal and freaky vibes of "OW (Drum Beat)", a woman's scream darting in and out of the stripped-back groove, and the heavily filtered "S Sonics" by the mysterious Wrecking Project. Over on the flip of the wax plate you have Blacktail's old-school lick "Now Muzik", while "Blimp Works" by Innsyter is a pumping techno gunshot that goes dirty and heavy on the percussive rattle. Raw, dirty, and messed up from the start.

XL
Cat: XL 1001T. Rel: 22 Nov 19
  1. Bromley (6:49)
  2. Still Moving (5:03)
Review: When two UK heavyweights like Joy Orbison and Overmono come together, on a label as iconic as XL, you want to hear what they have to say. Their first collaborative outing is a real monster that kicks off with the surging and unrelenting pressure of "Bromley. With its pinging bass, sleek metal surfaces and alien sound effects; this is the beginning of something special. Flipside "Still Moving" is all writhing synths, wub-wub bass and jungle promise that will keep dancers on their toes.

Calypso (12")
Cat: GOOG 23. Rel: 18 Nov 20
  1. Calypso (8:10)
  2. Alcyone (7:44)
Review: GOOG Records is a French electronic music label founded by Low-Key (Alexandre Lorenzo) & Kardinal (Laurent Solivaret) and they present its 23rd release here - the Calypso EP. There are two reliable techno tools on offer, with the A side title track being a restrained rhythm-centred workout that is perfect for layered mixing or playing on its own for a minimal and hypnotic effect. On the flip is the more aggressive 'Alcyone' that's vaguely reminiscent of Plastikman's classic 'Spastik' with its triplet snare rolls running through filter delay to create a rushing and mental effect - serious!

Arla EP (12")
XL
Cat: XLT 762P. Rel: 29 Jul 16
  1. Olchon Flows (1:21)
  2. Lockner Union (3:36)
  3. C-Life (0:58)
  4. Winged (4:23)
  5. Programmer (3:20)
Review: Despite both enjoying successful careers, brothers Truss and Tessela have rarely worked together. It's perhaps for this reason that Arla, the debut EP from their collaborative Overmono project, has been so hotly anticipated. There are plenty of highlights amongst the five tracks - two of which are short-run skits - with the duo offering the right balance between experimental futurism, and good, old-fashioned dancefloor nous. Check, for example, the drowsy, undulating synth refrains and dense, tribal-influenced drums of "Lockner Union", the near-symphonic "Winged" - where stretched-out strings and mournful pads are underpinned by a stucatto rhythm - and the restless, rhythmic ambience of impressive closer "Programmer".

Sands Of Time
Cat: WANIATI 90. Rel: 23 Aug 16
  1. Zarate Fix - "Sands Of Time" (5:01)
  2. DJ Sotofett - "Coiled" (Acid mix) (5:22)
Review: The latest Sex Tags Wania missive is a 10"-shaped soundclash between Phil Sherburne/Pitchfork agitator DJ Sotofett and a true legend of the Sydney scene in Carlos Zarate aka Zarate Fix (Thug/Sweet Chilli). On the A side, Zarate serves up "Sands Of Time," a smooth low-slung groove carried by exotic vocals reminiscent of Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard; a nice touch. On the flip, Sotofett takes it down to grinding and slow-burning pace with the lysergic EBM styles of "Coiled (Acid mix)" which is one gutsy groove indeed; with a seriously nasty arpeggio covered in the right amount of rust and dust as we like!
