Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

A-Ton is a new label from Berlin heavyweights Ostgut Ton, designed to focus on "ambient, archive and alternative music". They've pulled off something of a coup for this debut release, persuading British techno legend Luke Slater to open up the archives of his '90s intelligent techno project, The 7th Plain. Chronicles I boasts a mixture of previously released and unheard material, which moves from glistening, outer-space ambience (the near perfect "Boundaries", "Grace"), to fizzing Motor City techno ("T-Funk Statues"), via intergalactic intelligent techno, dusty downtempo grooves (the jazzy hip-hop rhythms and ambient electronics of "Slip 7 Sideways"), and melodious IDM.

Review: Remastered and reissued with new a new album cover via the Clone West Coast Series, Adult's 'New Phonies' EP first appeared in 2000 as the duo moniker of Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller, two legit electro stalwarts. This is a proper snappy electro EP - of the least sympathetic and most coldly calculating kind - evoking the fright of becoming trapped inside an inescapable subliminal-sonic cybernetic feedback loop, with all human faculties thrown to the wayside. 'Hand To Phone', for example, locks us into a communicative-cybernetic stasis, with spitty acid 16ths betraying the mood of becoming affective chasers of electromagnetic signals, unwittingly carrying out the bidding of our new techno-evangelist overlords. The A-sider 'New Object', meanwhile, with its sizzling 808s, transitional fluctuations and hip-hop vocal refrain - "I need you to accommodate my comunication needs" - touches on several layers of objectification at once: sexual, commodification, loss of the ability to speak. Adult truly dealt with adult themes and embraced their recapture into the machine - now you too can own their New Object.

La Noche (6:01)
Review: Key Vinyl is the concern of French techno man Freddy K and next up on his excellent imprint is a young and developing artist by the name of Atonism. He hails from Spain and once again shows his class here with a little help from the vocals of Viktoriia. His brand of techno is punchy and direct but not sort of nuance - the opener has some funk in the kicks and mystery in the scratchy vocals then 'Unknown Error' gets unhinged and disorientating in terms of its twisted synths. 'Don't Call Me Baby' is bubbly, wet minimal and 'La Noche' shuts down with surging synths, unrelenting drums and hammering hits.

Review: Ilian Tape have been sympathetic to the sound of UK bass for some time now, but this new drop from Atrice leans even further into the pervading energy of dubstep as a source of club pressure. The Swiss duo first appeared on Ilian Tape with Q back in 2021, and they're sounding stronger than ever on this latest missive. If 'Multiplex' brings a cybernetic sheen to headsy 140, then 'Is It Warm' does similar work with techy d&b as the pair dice up breakbeats with precision and drape exquisite, shimmering pads over the ruffness. There's also space for crafty techno propulsion on 'Broke' and high-tempo trippiness on '83 Steps', making this a versatile, consistently brilliant release from a rising force in the scene.

Showtime (4:32)

Jazz Ting (4:57)
Review: Mark Broom is one of the mainstays of the global underground. The UK titan has a recognisable take on house and techno genre that is underpinned by slamming kick and that comes to bare once more now as he lands on fellow legend Radio Slave's Rekids label. These four cuts bring a more house feel to start with as 'Klashjamz' layers up disco strings and vocals into something joyous. 'Showtime' has a garage slip to the loopy, silky drum rotations and 'HighNRG' throws it back with big stabs, percussive drums and chopped up vocal shards. 'Jazz Ting' is an aptly named closer with plenty of steamy sax notes of raw, loopy grooves.

The Realm (Wild club remix) (7:25)
Review: Groovin Italy landed a monumental reissue for the label with C'hantal's 'The Realm'. Originally released way back in 1990 on the dance and early Brooklyn based Powertraxx records. Staying true to the original release, it offers the 'Love In D Minor' mix but does one better in tucking in the Acapella version to the A-side so the B-side 2 versions have a little more room to breathe. The added bonus has to be putting on the more rare "Wild Club mix' to the party along with the original 'Rave Mix'. All and all, a very packed reissue of some of the best versions of the track, all on one record. This might just hold the number one spot for best techno reissue so far of 2024.

Review: Dutch powerhouse Delsin welcomes a techno legend in the form of Claudio PRC for a serious new four-tracker. 'Celotex' immediately arrests the attention with its deep and dubby drums rolling down low beneath flashes of static electricity. On the flipside, 'Latent' is another supper warm and supple dub techno masterclass with deft percussive suns peeling off the lovely linear groove. This is pure back room dancing music for those who like stripped back sounds in which to get lost in the small hours and another great EP from Delsin.

69db - "Night Life" (8:00)
Review: Spiral Tribe's Network 23 label take a hyper-kinetic trip back into the archives for this 12", pulling out classic material from core members Crystal Distortion and 69db. 'Jailbreak 96' originally came out as an untitled track on 1995 release Part 2 and it sounds as punishing as ever as Simon Carter rides bloated kicks and annihilating textures turned up to a rampant tempo. We're not sure on where 'Fridgetrax 2' was pulled from, but it's a vintage slice of freetekno nonetheless, piling on the psychoactive pressure in a style which aligns with the harder, faster strains of techno knocking about these days. On the flip, 69db's 'Night Life' keeps the pressure up - free party fodder doesn't get any more real than this.

Review: The pivotal Lobster Theremin welcomes D.Dan for a new EP that follows on from a fine run of recent form. As always, he serves up thrilling, hard hitting techno that has you clenching both your fists and your teeth as you buckle in for the white knuckle ride. "Switchblade" kicks off with distorted drums and urgent synth stabs that race along at 100 miles an hour. "Mutant Force" is just that with its tortured synths and surging drums, then burn out offers a dystopian take on mind warping Mills-ian techno. There is slightly deeper, warmer stuff on the flipside that carries you to the very fringes of the galaxy.

Review: Much loved doom monger emo kids Depeche Mode have always been ripe for remixing by new generations of electronic music artists and so it is that there 'My Favourite Stranger' gets a series of re-rubs here on Columbia. Tech house mainstay Boris Brejcha remixes first and elongates the grooves with mournful pads up top. The Ela Minus remix of the same tune brings some extra textured and darker moods and the best is saved till the last if you ask us. The Lond Island Sound remix is high speed and tinged with electro synth work as the moody vocals echo about the mix to trippy effect.

Jamming Is Life (6:20)
Review: Rocket Science is the latest EP by the standout Netherlands techno producer Eversines. It is also the first release by the new label Jamming Is Life. This record is all about the late-night sounds. The techno is richly infused with a bit of Goa and psy-trance that adds to the mythical and tribal sound like in the example, 'Act'. Each track here prides itself on constantly evolving the sounds in motion with an upwards trajectory or energy. These are properly sequenced tracks that go somewhere and not just placed sounds on a computer. Which in turn, makes them great for the dancefloor. Unlike older Psy-trance, these tempos are right in the sweet spot for house and techno lovers alike. 'M' is one of our early favorites on this clutch piece of hedonism while the acid line in 'Jamming Is Life' is pure flashback inducing business. The Jamming is Life label is starting out strong with this one.

It is there that they return with what is presumably a new series, Refreshing Part, as this is installment one. They have a frantic and frantic techno sounds rooted in the 90s school of box banging. 'Never Sleep' opens on that manic tip before 'Gaze' is a little more stripped back but no less potent. Elsewhere the caustic textures of 'Into A Diamond' are almost enough make your eyes water.

Review: Following a relatively quiet year which saw him release just two (admittedly must-check) EPs via Dub Recordings and PLURm Ryan James Ford gets his 2024 campaign underway with his first 12-inch for Clone's Basement Series in almost four years. Inspired in part by the crumbling, concrete-clad surrounds of Tower Hamlets in London, Ford offers up a swathe of Brutalist techno workouts tailor-made for sweat-soaked peak-time sessions and pitch-black basement parties. He begins with the dystopian, funk-fuelled heaviness of 'Bellmarsh', before reaching for fiendishly distorted beats, jacking bass and intergalactic synth stabs on 'Dimples'. 'Extendo' sees the sometime Happy Skull contributor pepper another surging and dusty techno groove with melancholic melodies and vintage Autechre style motifs, while 'Cheese Bin' is as psychedelic as it is dark and foreboding.

Review: When techno is done right you just can't beat it, can you? Check the opening track from this new EP from Ryan James Ford, for example. 'Xtra Tall Tee' has a physical, unrelenting low end with just the right amount of distortion to make it sleazy, and is overlaid with hurried synth sequins that bring neon light and curious energy while some scratchy background vocal and raw as hell snares finish it in perfect style. There is a more trance vibe to 'Tricycle' (Proto mix), a sleeknesss to 'Sensitive Needs' deeper cosmic beauty to 'Bodge' (Closing mix) that makes this one a near perfect EP.

Review: With its' 15th birthday imminent, De:tuned delivers another must-check release: a brand-new instalment in Future Sound of London's legendary, rave-era Pulse series of EPs. Created using music recorded, but never released, by the duo - under a variety of aliases - during the late 80s and early 90s, Pulse 5 represents a significant addition to the vast FSOL catalogue. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the crunchy, fuzzy hip-hop beats and ghostly electronics of FSOL's 'Dialects' and the sub-heavy, bleep-infuenced brilliance of Yage's 'Sun Risen', to the intergalactic breakbeat hardcore hedonism of Smart Systems' 'The New Generation', the deep space proto-d&b of Ingo Tribe's 'Obstinta' and the glassy-eyed ambient techno of FSOL's 'Reasonable Acquiries'.

Quo Vadis (Frank Kusserow remix) (8:55)
Review: Some techno classics earn their status with the barest of elements - and that's absolutely true of G-Man's 'Quo Vadis'. Originally released by ex-LFO man Get Varley in 1995, it's a devastatingly simple premise of a stark, subtly swung beat and funked up dub techno chord trimmed down to a fine point. That's pretty much all that's needed to render a timeless favourite which will do the damage on any floor, whether it's a big room techno situation or a push-on-through tech house marathon you're faced with. On this reissue for Back To Life we also get a remix from Frank Kusserow on the flip, which wisely retains the fundamental essence of the track and just gives it some chunkier drums.

Mixing up melody, emotion, and ambiguity, Gastroler's sound is a tribute to classic electronic music that melds vintage equipment with contemporary production techniques. With a penchant for experimentation and transcending genre boundaries, Gastroler prioritizes the emotional resonance of his compositions. For him, music is a medium to evoke genuine feelings and emotions, driving his creative process beyond mere sonic exploration. To sum up - emotive techno with vintage vibes.

Review: Gesloten Cirkel has always been a firm favourite of the underground heads thanks to his leftfield taken techno. Now the Barcelona-based and experimental DIY imprint Selvamancer has signed him up for this effective new I Live In The Midwest EP. The title track gets things underway with meaning deep techno grooves embellished with a busy but soft-edged acid line that never stops prying. There is a more electro-bent to the kinetic 'Everything For The Dev' then things flip again into depraved and broken techno territory on 'A Better House.' Elsewhere, you'd be hard pushed to find more lo-fi and battered sound rhythms than those on the lumpy, bleepy 'You Should Post' while 'Download' is another uniquely brain-frying sound from this maverick.

Blunderbuss (6:16)
Under The Influence (6:01)
Review: Man of many aliases Ron Wells is undoubtedly an under-appreciated British dance music hero - a producer who delivered a string of innovative jungle-techno releases in the early 90s and has been serving up killer cuts in a variety of styles ever since. Here he dons the Jack Smooth alias (a moniker he debuted way back in 1991) for a collaborative four-tracker alongside fellow storied veteran Anthony Wilson AKA Chicago Loop. They begin in sensational fashion via the bleep-sporting analogue acid house of 'Waverider', before opting for warehouse-ready early UK techno sounds on the gnarled and nasty 'Innervision'. 'Blunderbuss' adds warped hardcore rave sounds to a sweat-soaked jackin' house beat, while 'Under The Influence' sounds like a long lost, loved-up tech-house blueprint from 1994. Stellar stuff all told.

Scrap (5:50)
Dry Mouth (6:13)
It Is To Be (5:57)
Review: Montreal-based label and production outfit Jump Source keep up the busy work rate hot on the heels of their recent five-track with a new drop. The three tracks here are all very much from the future - opener 'Scrap' is a fizzing, electric, static-laced minimal and tech groove with deft drums and plenty of wonky lines. 'Dry Mouth' gets a little more loose and more fluid but is still built from abstract sound designs and malfunctioning AI takes on techno. Last but not least, 'It Is To Be' brings a little late-night dub warmth to the table.
