  1. Hidden Beauties (7:17)
  2. The Dansant (6:40)
Review: Next up on Kompakt's esteemed Spiecher series is Brazilian techno heroine with the powerful and adrenalised acid techno epic "Hidden Beauties" taking you back to a time in the '90s when the likes of Laurent Garnier and Hardfloor reigned supreme - absolutely epic stuff! The jackathon continues on the B side with second offering "The Dansant" with its violent whirling bassline that doesn't rely on the that little silver Roland box like the previous side but still packing as much punch, its aggressive syncopated 909 rhythms rapid firing away in convincingly old school fashion. Just fresh off of it's 100th release, ANNA was a great choice thereafter, following up some killer grooves for top labels such as Turbo, Terminal M, Get Physical and Matador's Rukus imprint to name but a few.

Review: New York's Sequencias label returns with the mysterious Area, an artist who has appeared on everything from Ethereal Sound to Until My Heart Stops. The EP begins with "Circadian", a bass-heavy mind-sweller with subtle nuances of breaks and warm glows of techno. On the B-side, Area teams up with Jack for "One Less Me", a beatless experimentation featuring sci-fi vocal sample and swarms of bass, while "XxeXX (Crushkilled version)" combines drones with lo-fi noise to produce a truly singular piece of abstract sound.

  1. Technology (Techno Bass mix) (5:04)
  2. Technology (Rhythm mix) (3:37)
Review: Re-Release: Released in 1993, The Technology Ep appeared on the start of a re-establishment of electro music and a
beginning for the Direct Beat label. That would be a constant reminder of where to see 'AUX88' material come to light.
"Technology" carried the 'AUX88' brand onto radio, mainstream club and dance parties...become a sought after 12" by a
band that proclaimed its sound as 'Electro/Techno'. The Techno Bass mix is the original track, (now for the first time
available) Rhythm Mix is a different animal on its own... Within the track you can hear the growth of what would
become the sound of emerging aliases' in years to come and the use of distinct voices/vocals. With both versions from
the original studio recordings in 1993, Listeners will be treated to a major bonus point in the birth of the 'AUX Quadrant'
of projects to come. Designed for a well-deserved space on the global dance floor.

Review: The Ostgut Ton Zehn 12" series continues apace and lands on edition Sechs, which packs a triple trouble punch from Messrs Barker & Baumecker, Atom TM and Anthony MF Parasole! Responsible for one of our favourite Ostgut artist albums, Sam Barker and Andy Baumecker kick things off with their first original production in some time and the brittle, unpredictable hardcore manifestation "Love Is A Battlefield" has us hoping the pair will return with something more substantial soon. Ten minutes of ethereal techno at it's finest! On the flip, Atom TM takes it down a stripped back and dubby route with "Stromlinien" whilst The Corner don Parasole lays waste to the dancefloor with the reverberant elasticity of "Heartbeat".

Review: Alexander Starodubov first made his name in the late noughties as a producer of hard-to-pigeonhole blends of electronic club cuts, ambient and IDM, before re-branding himself as Bliss Inc last year. Here he delivers his second EP under the alias, charging between blissful, saucer-eyed '90s progressive house/early house fusion (brilliant opener "Hacking The Planet", whose psychedelic acid lines are particularly addictive), bleeping, sunrise-ready turn-of-the-'90s deep breaks ("Infinite"), and bounding workouts that reminded us of "Brown Album"-era Orbital ("Transitions"). The single also features a brilliant bonus remix of "Hacking The Planet" by Sansibar, who re-casts it as a lusciously loved-up, emotive and hallucinatory chunk of electro/deep breaks fusion.

Review: Anders Karlsson's Celldod project has earned the artist plenty of attention from our end over the last year, because we just love the way that he mixes up EBM with industrial and techno; call us old fashioned but that it exactly our bit of fun. He's back on Canada's Suction imprint and he's in the same mood that we left his in a few months ago: these tracks are all stand-out but if you asked us, we'd pick the opener "Svart Magi" for its deliciously wonky bassline, the brooding, pseudo electro of "Impulskontroll", "Under Press" and its harsh techno tone, and the beatless howls of "Stormens Oga". This is heavily recommended, people!

Review: Despite the hard-to-pronounce title, this debut solo album from Scandinavian electro sort Celldod is something of a sparkly treat. For the most part, it sits somewhere between the darker, macabre sound of electro noir (and, on the freakish "Orgen I Neckon", clandestine ambience), and a bolder, more dancefloor-friendly take on the style. His style tends towards the bubbly and undulating, with bold synth lines stretching out across mechanical rhythms, body-popping beats and rolling analogue grooves. This CD version of the album contains a number of bonus cuts, including the horror-fixated, electroclash style darkness of "Frater", and the Drexciyan intensity of "Betong".

  3. Agaric - "Cute Acid" (4:41)

Review: A couple of years back, Music Pour La Danse released a superb anthology of works by key Belgian new beat producer Rembert De Swet, better known as Ro Maron. This 12" is meant as a kind of partner to that release and features a trio of sought-after cuts from De Swet's La Mystere collaboration with Ferre Baellen (AKA Bhab), plus a bonus acid throw-down he released as Agaric (the fantastic "Cute Acid", whose wild TB-303 lines work in perfect harmony with the producer's delicate beats and ghostly synthesizer melodies). Interestingly, both "On The Beat" and "On The Dub" are far more Balearic in feel than many De Swet projects - think chunky, laidback breakbeats, picturesque melodies and sunny chord sequences - while "Opus 303" wraps lilting, almost melancholic chords and trippy acid lines around a similarly break-driven groove.

  1. DJ Sotofett & Skatebard - "Decoded Satellite" (9:30)
  2. Lauer & DJ Sotofett - "Privat & Scharf" (DJ Sotofett Synth-Dub-Mix) (9:19)
Review: Skatebard's Digitalo Enterprises label hits release number 20 with the boss himself linking up with felt cult hero DJ Sotofett for one tune, while the oddball producer also goes solo on a remix. Italian dance music is very much in focus here but as seen through a new, weird and wonderful lens. 'Decoded Satellite' distills menacing synth drones with a pounding groove and Italo disco synths are stripped of all joy and repurposed as prowling late night miscreants. Flip it over for a much more airy and libidinous DJ Sotofett Synth-Dub-Mix of Lauer & DJ Sotofett's 'Privat & Scharf.' Serious stuff.

Review: A fair few DJs will go weak at the knees when they spot this collaboration between Workshop overlord Kassem Mosse and Fit Sound supremo Fit Siegel. The three tracks showcased on the EP were actually recorded in Detroit back in 2016, though Siegel only got round to completing finished versions last year. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the snappy, slightly wayward machine drums, slowly shifting TB-303 acid lines and subtle Detroit electronics of "Saboten", to the dubby late night hypnotism of closing cut "Cycle Blue", where woozy intergalactic chords, blissful piano motifs and vaguely threatening electronic pulses cluster around fizzing drums and a suitably bubbly bassline.

  1. Living Is Serious Business (Life acapella) (9:39)
  2. Living Is Serious Business (Carl Craig remix) (7:05)
Review: Given that he's always approached life with a cheery gusto, there's something rather ironic about Tim 'Love' Lee being involved in making a track called "Living Is Serious Business". Happily, he has man-of-the-moment Aaron 'Fit' Siegel by his side. The duo's original version is something of a trippy, late-night treat, with dubbed-out keys and percussive flourishes riding a dark Detroit bassline and fizzing, Motor City techno groove. It sounds like something that the brothers Fett would release on Sex Tags Mania, which is definitely a bonus in our book. Carl Craig does a sterling job on his flipside remix, retaining some of the original's eccentricity while adding a sweet melodiousness and production polish all of his own.

  4. They Live (Pessimist remix) (5:51)
Review: Some two years on from the release of Forest Drive West's rather good They Live EP, Midgar has decided to get the set remixed. They've chosen a very interesting selection of producers to provide the reworks, so it's little surprise to find that the resultant remixes are well worthy of attention. Wata Igarashi steps up first to deliver a decidedly dark, clandestine-sounding revision of 'Phosphenes' that adds ghostly chords, moody riffs and layered percussion to a pulsating broken techno groove, before Konduku re-imagines 'Block Nine' as a moody, spaced-out chunk of slipped techno hypnotism. Felix K's "reinterpretation" of 'Ricochet' is an atmospheric, ultra-deep, slow-motion affair full of starfall electronics, moody bass and intricately programmed percussion, while Pessimist's revision of 'They Live' sits somewhere between experimental D&B and skittish techno.

I Dream Of Wires: Hardcore Edition (blu-ray)
Cat: 509606 Rel: 15 Oct 13

Documentary film exploring the history, demise & resurgence of the modular synthesizer
Notes: Scribble Media Presents: I Dream Of Wires: Hardcore Edition

I Dream Of Wires: Hardcore Edition is a limited-edition companion to the feature-length documentary, I Dream Of Wires. An alternate/extended cut, I Dream Of Wires: Hardcore Edition is four hours in length, custom made for hardcore modular synthesizer and electronic music fanatics. This special, extended edition includes an exclusive, lengthy historical primer, exploring the early development of modular synthesizers from pioneering companies Moog Music Inc. and Buchla And Associates. The film makers also speak to early adopters of the modular synthesizer, pioneering musicians like Morton Subotnick and Bernie Krause. Legendary and influential electronic musicians and producers like Gary Numan, Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle), Daniel Miller and Flood offer insight into the modular synthesizer's early heyday, and eventual decline.

From there, you find out what's happening now: the phenomenal resurge of the modular synthesizer - exploring the passions, obsessions and dreams of people who have dedicated part of their lives to this esoteric electronic music machine. Inventors, musicians and enthusiasts are interviewed about their relationship with the modular synthesizer - for many, it's an all-consuming passion. Established musicians such as Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Carl Craig, Cevin Key (Skinny Puppy), John Foxx and Vince Clarke show off their systems and explain why they opt to use this volatile but ultimately rewarding technology. Meanwhile, a new generation of dance and electronica artists including James Holden, Factory Floor, Richard Devine and Clark explain why they've stepped away from laptops to embrace the sound and physicality of modular synthesizers.

Innovative companies like Modcan and Doepfer, driven by a desire to revive modular synthesizers, discuss how they planted the seeds that have now grown into a major cottage industry. What started out as a "vinrtage revival scene" in the 90s has grown into an underground phenomena with a growing market of modular obsessives craving ever more wild and innovative sounds and interfaces. Today, the modular synthesizer is no longer an esoteric curiosity or even a mere music instrument - it is an essential tool for radical new sounds and a bona-fide subculture.

Review: Pan Pot's Second State label strides into 2021 with a big new slab of techno from Joyhauser. It is a direct to dance floor three tracker that launches off with 'Think People', a techno tune as frazzled, high impact and hard hitting as you could wish for. The drums are monstrous, the kick swing low and the whole thing will fry your brain. 'Molly' is more stripped back but not less high impact as it barrels forwards on a surging groove with sleek synths peeling off the beats. Michael Klein remixes 'Think People' to close out on another powerful techno groove.

Blurring the lines between jungle and techno, your brain and the dancefloor, time and space, across the collection the Bristol pioneer takes us to some strange and singular places; the tension and sci-fi isolation of '7 Known Truths', the swaggering space funk of 'Keter The Heavenly', the marching drama and powerful sense of foreboding on 'Negative Returns', the blitzkrieg amen-shattered opener 'Hegel Dialectic', the list goes on. Each cut building and merging to create a truly unique landscape that offers up something new on every investigation, it'll take another 14 years to unravel this album's many mysteries. Review: Though he first appeared on Wild Oats as part of NSNT PRJCT back in 2010, the music Manuel Gonzales produces as MGUN has largely surfaced on labels outside of his hometown of Detroit, with Don't Be Afraid, Berceuse Heroique and The Trilogy Tapes among them. His arrival on Aaron Siegel's Fit Sounds label is most welcome then; with the 3 track self titled EP proving further compelling evidence that Gonzales is becoming one of Detroit's current greats. There's a marauding nature to the bassline and rhythms in "Wide Eye" that will appeal to Jamal Moss fans, whilst "Debit" drags you down a gnarly acid rabbit hole. It's the B Side cut that really impresses however, with "MSC" seemingly embracing some of the experimental urges Gonzales has when recording material under the Savant guise with some truly atmospheric results.

Boundary Conditions
Cat: SONICGROOVE 1359. Rel: 30 Apr 13
  1. Outcast
  2. Vanishing Point
  3. Periphery
Review: With numerous vinyl, CD and cassette releases over the past 20 years, Orphx are true techno veterans; Boundary Conditions marks their third release for Adam X's Sonic Groove label, and sees them continue to blur the lines between techno, industrial and noise music with stellar results. "Outcast" begins with a tunnelling bass pulse, slowly giving way to savagely distorted synth blasts, gradually building to a frenzy of broken noise. "Vanishing Point" is similarly beautiful in its abrasiveness, coating its simple beat with distorted drum rolls and delicate tones, while "Periphery" takes a gentler approach letting its textures and rhythms unfold and breathe in more cavernous surroundings. Once again the duo prove why they are one of techno's most enduring outfits.

Review: RED VINYL REPRESS: The Progetto Tribale was originally born in 1992 and gave rise to early success in the underground techno world. It continued throughout the nineties and landed on various labels as it put out multiple volumes of dubby, atmospheric techno. Now, 24 years after the last volume in 1996, it is back. The vital collaborative crew of Donato Dozzy, Pietro and Paolo Micioni appear to remix 'Behaviour 2020' into a zoned out and deep late night techno roller with dubby drums, dreamy Italian melodic overtones and plenty of charm. The other three originals are a little more direct, but no less cerebral and hypnotic.

Feel The Reverse: DJ Koze Edits (Record Store Day 2018)
  1. Feel The Same (DJ Koze edit) (6:54)
  2. Reverse (DJ Koze edit) (6:39)
Review: Rekids' special Record Store Day 2018 release features two extraordinary re-edits: of recent Radio Slave tracks by Pampa boss DJ Koze. Taken from his Feel The Same album, Matt Edwards has certainly received a brilliant rendition from the Hamburg legend right here. The euphoric remix of the title track still features the looped-up diva vocals of the original and is exactly the kind of track you'd expect him to drop on a Sunday night one of his his regular appearances at Panorama Bar. On the flip, the hard hitting and tunneling "Reverse" is more on the techno tip and originally appeared as the B-side to 2017's Overdue EP. Both edits are secret weapons for any serious DJ's set.
