Manuela
Manuela (10")
Cat: HJP 68. Rel: 22 Mar 12
  1. Manuela
  2. Manuela (Mark Ernestus dub)
Review: Compared to the freeform styles of the Leave Talking 10", the star spot on Rocket Juice & The Moon's "Manuela" by Erykah Badu drives the free-flowing funk of the supergroup (made up of Damon Albarn, Flea and Tony Allen) into a cheeky and mildly dubby pop nugget with a shuffly rhythm to it. Badu is on fine form as ever, lending her coolly delivered-tones to the stripped down track in that disarmingly natural way of hers. Mark Ernestus gets drafted in for a dub version which may surprise his fans as the original remains thoroughly intact, especially in terms of the drums, instead focusing on the freeform synth warbles to provide the centre-point of the track.

Motief
Motief (marbled vinyl 10")
Cat: ROD 13. Rel: 18 Oct 19
  1. Stranger - "Motief" (5:49)
  2. Umwelt - "Shut Up & Dance" (5:51)
Review: There are no prizes for guessing the sort of music that defines Rave Or Die. Next up with some dynamite club tracks are Stranger and Umwelt, who take one side each of this new marbled 10". Stranger's "Motief" is a techno crescendo that builds on hard hitting techno drums. The urgent synths and increasingly brash hi hats work you into a manic state that is all consuming. Umwelt then gets even more abrasive with caustic synths and retro rave stabs, slapping metallic hits and pounding broken kick drums all forcing you to move on "Shut Up & Dance". This is truly arresting stuff once again from Rave Or Die.

Unthank 13: Caution 9'6" High (clear vinyl 10" in screen-printed sleeve)
Cat: UNTHANK 013. Rel: 07 Jan 20
  1. Global Go (4:42)
  2. Nanga (3:12)
  3. Cruising (4:01)
  4. Coconut Groove (4:41)
Review: Firecracker offshoot Unthank's 13th immaculately presented clear vinyl 10-inch comes courtesy of Benoit B, a producer whose suitably cosmic and otherworldly electronic outings have previously been showcased by Wisdom Teeth, Berceuse Heroique and Versatile (amongst others). He's in fine form throughout, mixing skewed, lo-fi drum machine rhythms with fuzzy, retro-futurist synths and a big dollop of intergalactic attitude. We're particularly enjoying the strangely swung wonkiness of opener "Global Go" and the leftfield sci-fu funk of closing cut "Coconut Grove", but the two tracks in between are equally as potent. In other words, this is another deliciously quirky and entertaining ten-inch from Unthank.

City At Night
City At Night (limited 10")
Cat: DET 313B. Rel: 09 Dec 19
  1. A City At Night (6:12)
  2. The Dream (extended edit) (4:46)
Review: For the latest missive on their fast-rising DET313 label, Gary Martin and Yossi Amoyal have dug deep into the archives of Martin's long-running Teknotika Records imprint. First up on the A-side is a re-mastered version of "A City At Night", a Martin cut from 1990 that mixes the futurist intent of Motor City techno with chunkier, UK style techno grooves and the kind of stabs and musical flourishes more associated with Robert Hood or Terrence Parker records. Side B boasts a freshly extended edit of another Martin gem - this time under the Gigi Galaxy alias - from 1994. "The Dream" more than lives up to its title, with Martin wrapping restless bass, starry lead lines, alien electronics and sumptuous chords around a hypnotic deep techno groove.

Split Didactics EP
Cat: POLEGROUP 056. Rel: 06 Sep 19
  1. Split Didactics (6:21)
  2. A New Description Of Hell (5:37)
Review: Seleccion Natural is Oscar Mulero, Exium and Reeko, a techno dream team who have a new album on the way this autumn. Before that they offer up two tracks from it on a tidy 10" that brims with modular synthesisers, samplers and drum machines. "Split Didactics" will rewire your brain with squeaking lines and cantering kicks making for a real techno riot, and "A New Description Of Hell" layers up hammering kicks with howling synths into a rigid and unrelenting groove. Making this extra special is artwork by none other than Silent Servant.

Manifesto (clear vinyl 10")
Cat: SATOTEM 005. Rel: 04 Sep 19
  1. Manifesto (5:57)
  2. Don't Leave (6:07)
  3. Clouds (5:05)
Review: Berlin-based DJ and producer Denise Rabe has become something of a cult heroine since her first releases in 2015. The years since have found her operate in her own parallel techno world, where psychoactive sounds and heavy drones permeate your ears, then your brain, then your whole being. Now she steps away from her own Rabe label for a debut on Stroboscopic Artefacts, which finds her take charge of the Totem series. Opener "Manifesto" is a driving techno groover with ghoulish synth designs and keys from the 5th dimension, then "Don't Leave" will utterly trip you out with its panning pads and mysterious leads. "Clouds" completes the journey with doom laden and wide spread kick drums that lurch over and over through some ruined post-human world. Tip!

Cat: SATOTEM 006. Rel: 09 Oct 19
  1. Embera (8:50)
  2. Saija (6:39)
  3. Awa (6:09)
Review: Techno hero Adriana Lopez follows up powerful releases on Modularz and her own Grey Report with this collection of mesmerising techno journeys for the ever reliable Stroboscopic Artefacts' sixth installment in their Totem series. "Embera" sees the Colombian artist venturing down a ghostly trail previously unexplored. Enter the void on the tunnelling freefall session of the title track, trance out to the strobe-lit hypnotherapy of "Saija" before the mental overdrive of closer "Awa" takes you further down the spiral with its intoxicating and droning motions. Exactly the type of sonic tools that you could imagine her deploying during one of her acclaimed and epic DJ sets - this one is serious!

Brutalismo EP
Brutalismo EP (10") (1 per customer)
Cat: MOJ 12. Rel: 02 Aug 19
  1. Brutalismo (7:56)
  2. We Control The Sound (8:11)
Review: Fernando Zapico AKA Z@p is one of those producers whose work is always worth a listen, primarily because his quality threshold is very high. This two-track missive on My Own Jupiter picks up where his recent EP for Japanese imprint Cabaret left off, delivering faintly foreboding futurist techno whose sci-fi inspirations are clear to hear. A-side "Brutalismo" sets the tone, with paranoia-inducing analogue bass, creepy synth stabs and swirling electronic textures rising above a punchy drum machine-driven groove. "We Control The Sound" is notably denser and a little darker, with sturdier beats, moodier chord sequences and a bone-chilling breakdown.

  1. Project Loop 1 (5:13)
  2. Boloto Acid (5:12)
  3. 2x Tech (4:57)
  4. Subsonic II (5:14)
Review: Russian enfant terrible Pavel Milyakov aka Buttechno appears next on Gost Zvuk: an imprint dedicated exclusively to the Russian and ex-USSR scene and only releasing music of producers from these regions. The label's seventh release (known elsewhere as 'Swamp Tracks') showcases the diverse array of Milyakov's sonic repertoire, that has seen his release on labels as diverse as Cititrax, Incienso and Zodiac 44. The fierce sonar transmission of "Project Loop 1" or "Subsonic II" will no doubt bear comparisons to Berlin legend Sleeparchive, but still hold their own. Milyakov is really in his element when delving deep into electro mutations as heard on "Industrial Acid" or the tripped-out minimal techno cut (and our favorite) "2x Clouds".

Craic Memories EP
Cat: LDR 12. Rel: 29 Oct 12
  1. In Space
  2. Craic Memories
  3. Mutuality
Review: German producer Vertical67 remembers the good times on this fine Lunardisko debut, presenting a three track journey through the deepest realms of dreamy electro. We launch with the expansive production "In Space" where brisk 808 patterns drive delicately onwards through a rich backdrop of kaleidoscopic warmth, a real sense of melodic intuition apparent throughout. Flip the 10" over and ease down to 33rpm for the title track which presents a nice contrast between the jagged, menacing acid modulations and the skipping playful house grooves that demonstrate there's more to Vertical67's palette than straight up electro, though subtle remnants remain. Yearning distant female harmonies floating around the channels of "Mutuality" expertly add that extra element of melancholy to this brooding production.

ACEXP04
ACEXP04 (100 gram vinyl 10")
Cat: ACEXP 04. Rel: 26 Feb 18
  1. 1A
  2. 1B
Review: We're not sure who's behind the mysterious AC-EXP project, but the shadowy figure returns with more of that strange, submerged house music he's been tickling discerning DJs with over the past few years. After taking last year off, "1A" is a fine place to start things up again with a strutting jack track carrying acidic synth pulses that flirt with measured delay processing. It's a jam that sounds steamy and sinister all at once. "1B" maintains this restrained but seductive vibe with the slightly trancey throb of the lead synths pivoting around the snappy drums to great effect.

  1. Heal (8:29)
  2. Plight (8:27)
Review: From his appearances on Aesthetic Audio and Ornate through to his own Atmospheric Existence label, Miles Sagnia continues to be one of the best kept secrets of British deep techno, and that's no more apparent than on this stunning release for Common Dreams. There's a looped up insistence to "Heal", but it's offset by emotive movement in the synth lines and an overall spiritual quality that escapes much cyclical techno. "Plight" takes a slightly slower path, amping up the early UK electronica tones for an immersive experience shaped out by interlocking rhythms and snaking melodies. It's a truly classy statement that stays true to techno while saying something original.

Montpelier/Rumex (100 gram vinyl 10")
Cat: TIO S3. Rel: 16 Sep 19
  1. Montpelier (5:47)
  2. Rumex (6:19)
Review: Fresh from delving into his ambient side on the pastorally-enhanced "Loom Dream" album for Whities, Leif revives his self-manned Tio Series with another double-shot of delicate but impactful cuts outside the conventional slipstream of modern techno. The rhythms fall crooked, the synths trickle, bubble and cascade around the groove and the atmosphere remains humid and heady, especially on ear-snagging B-side "Rumex". "Montpelier" sports more explicit dubby flourishes and a spread of sonic flora and fauna in the middle distance that truly brings the track to life.

It's All For You (Album Sampler 3)
Cat: SECTCDVS 3. Rel: 25 Jun 12
  1. Atopic (Lag remix)
  2. 69:02
Review: Sect's third and final sampler for the It's All For You compilation ends on a bittersweet note, seeing the last release from Sect favourite Grovskopa, who has decided to retire following the closest of near death experiences. The A-Side features Lag's remix of his Sect classic "Atopic", reworking the lurching bass and broken-beat rhythms of the original into a hypnotic number with a fractured synth melody. The B-Side sees "2:69", a brittle yet powerful track with churning bass which recalls Drexciya's classically hard edged approach, combined with hazy orchestral sweeps - a fitting swansong for a great producer.

Puttin It Out
  1. Jason Fine - "Puttin It Out" (A Made Up Sound remix)
  2. Jason Fine - "Human Need" (Heinrich Mueller Celestial Sphere mix)
Review: Repress: As one of the younger breed of Detroit talents, Jason Fine is still just starting to get a foothold, despite having a good few years of releases behind him. His Kontra Musik relationship has proven to be the most fruitful, and this remix package capitalises on that with two top shelf commissions. A Made Up Sound brings his unmistakable broken house swing to bear, with warming subs and thick swathes of pad and melody twisted to Dave Huismann's crafty designs. Heinrich Muller brings the Drexciyan vibes in abundance with his punchy electro stance that remains peerless after all these years.

Cat: PCRSV 03. Rel: 07 Sep 18
  1. Bribie Dub (6:46)
  2. Bribie Dub (Mike Schommer remix) (7:11)
Review: Aussie duo Echo Inspectors first joined forces with Dresden veteran Insect O back in 2015, wowing critics and buyers alike with the sumptuous dub techno vibes of "Bourne Dub". Three years on they're at it again with "Bribie Dub", a bouncy and rather delicious excursion that wraps ricocheting, undulating dub techno motifs around a far bolder and chunkier rhythm track that provides the track with plenty of movement and pace. Mike Schommer steps up to remix the track on side B, delivering an even more hypnotic take that's a little more bright and melodic than the A-side original version.

Cat: LINDA 001. Rel: 14 Jul 15
  1. Self Destruct (10:15)
  2. Non (5:11)
  3. Inside (3:18)
Review: Since 1984, Laurent Prot has been putting out music as In Aeternam Vale, a project which has given us some of the best experimental beat music, the finest in darkwave and paved the way for many contemporary artists to do their thing. Although Prot had long periods of hiatus, the last five years have seen renewed interest in his work thanks to the efforts of Veronica Vasicka whose Minimal Wave label has issued several outstanding In Aeternam Vale retrospectives. Following his excellent Jealous God release, Prot now appears on the newly formed Linda Records with a devilish 10" containing three tracks that sounds as fresh and captivating as any of the music made by twenty-something year-olds now. "Self-Destruct" is an electrifying techno driver riding at a slow pace; "Non" ups the speed and drops in a heavy layer of pseudo-acid to the equation; "Inside" ties things off with a cavernous swarm of drones, sounding like the inside of a jet engine. DO NOT SLEEP.

  2. Aversion
  3. Desolation
  4. Four Faces
Review: The second collectible EP out of three, arriving on double white 10" vinyl, and containing tracks from Jon Convex's debut album, Idoru sees another four hard hitting fusions of techno and contemporary bass music. Unlike the first EP, which was surprisingly melodic, these tracks aim squarely at the floor, with "What I Need" a heavy tom-led piece of Detroit influenced techno, and "Aversion" providing some tracky functionalism. "Desolation" and "Four Faces" meanwhile provide some bleak electro dystopianism, much indebted to his Autonomic heritage.

  1. Track 1 (5:26)
  2. Track 2 (4:18)
  3. Track 3 (5:54)
Review: Miltiadis Merentitis is one of the greatest exponents of the underground Greek scene. After several releases on Nous, Echovolt and Synapsis he joins Jose Rico's Spanish imprint Freebeat with the Epitome Of Things EP. Miltiades explores the driest of territories through his characteristic chords, kicks and percussion which will transport you to another world. Take the first cut on the A side for instance: a deep hypnotic techno cut that creates perfect trance induction by relying on the most basic of analogue elements. On the flip, the second track is a gothic lo-fi house jam reminiscent of New York City's Patricia while the final offering channels the spirit of early '90's Detroit on this fine serving of hi-tech soul.
