Review: Eclectic technoizer Basic Bastard locks arms with Detroiter Orlando Voorn, their dual sonic output being the new 'Drama' EP. The three-tracker is nothing short of a sonic adventure, spanning acid, to dub, to uncategorisable entrainments. Bastard's original 'Drama' nails the art of the acid loop, a tricky tactic that is much less masterable than one might think. Voorn remixes the track my miring its elements in a cruddy ambience, while also greedily occupying the entire B-side with the urban-hellish jazz-noise-house cut 'Survival'.

Review: Rampant and 'up for it' as usual, the Cititrax label is back with a new set of wayward technoid experiments for the more trained ears on the dancefloors. This time it's Romania's Borusiade and newcomer The Sixteen Steps who share two sides of a wax plate and, of course, proceed to annihilate any idea of a quiet night in. The former sets off with the mechanical acid bumps of "Infatuation", guided by an eerie set of vocal blurs, and that's followed by the comparatively more beat-centric techno of the apocalyptic "Confutation". On the flip, The Sixteen Steps first lands on "Signals From The South", a house banger with noxious levels of mutant bass at its core, followed by the single-minded industrialism and sheer techno brutality of "Promises On The Run". WOWZAH!

Review: Brother Nebula is the alias of veteran Calfornian producer Lance Desardi, who some may remember presented a great EP on Nick Hoppner's Touch From A Distance back in 2019. He returns to London's Legwork label with a selection of high-def sonic workouts on Brother Says Relax. On side A, there's the elevating acid house of the title track taking its cues from the timeless Trax Records era, followed by some handy beat and acapella versions. Over on the flip, the woozy and saucer-eyed 'The Burden Of Proof' is followed by the druggy, chugging tunnel vision of 'SIS' (feat Solar - Bro Nebs In dub).

Review: When composing the tracks featured on his first release on Anthony Naples and Jenny Slattery's Incienso imprint, Mister Saturday Night and Vanity Press alumnus James Bangura reportedly drew inspiration from long, late-night teenage driving experiences. There's certainly a 'speeding through canyons under a blanket of stars' feel to 'Barred Entry', a hypnotic techno journey rich in restless kick-drums, hissing ride cymbals, hazy organ loops and delay-laden chords. He flips the script on 'Mixed Signals', delivering a dubbed-out slab of mind-mangling breakbeat house hedonism, before blurring the boundaries between high-octane electro and breathless techno on 'Monterrey'. To round things off, he adds reverb-heavy ambient textures and yearning synth-strings to a crunchy dub techno groove on EP standout 'Wichita'.

Review: Billy Nightmare, aka "Mystic Bill" Torres, grew up in Miami and spent much of his life involved in various parts of the music industry, but he's hardly seen good recognition for his work until now. Following its re-cropping-up online in late 2018 (the album was thrown up on the net by the artist himself) Sounds Records have ridden the wave of revived interest in the 'Reality Check' EP with a new vinyl reissue. These are high impact cuts of body-slamming techno with deep synths and sleek rhythms. 'Always Silver, Never Gold' kicks off with a warped and elastic underwater rhythm packed with atmosphere while 'Bees Crave' ups the ante with heady and rusty loops. 'Spill The Mill' is a murky and grubby dubbed out roller while 'Crawler' looks into a train track like groove. 'Mea K7' closes with a more heady and celestial vibe.

He now steps out to launch his own new label A Long Strange Dream, with a five track EP that runs the stylistic gamut from ambient to raw and futurist techno. Churning bass and hefty hits one up 'Traverse' which rides on a menacing bassline and is action packed from front to back. 'In Tongues' is a thumping technoid banger and 'For Spirits' is a wild rhythmic work out with disrupted low ends and groaning synths. Review: Mark Broom is one of the mainstays of the global underground. The UK titan has a recognisable take on house and techno genre that is underpinned by slamming kick and that comes to bare once more now as he lands on fellow legend Radio Slave's Rekids label. These four cuts bring a more house feel to start with as 'Klashjamz' layers up disco strings and vocals into something joyous. 'Showtime' has a garage slip to the loopy, silky drum rotations and 'HighNRG' throws it back with big stabs, percussive drums and chopped up vocal shards. 'Jazz Ting' is an aptly named closer with plenty of steamy sax notes of raw, loopy grooves.

Review: Visillusion Records boss Thomas Barnett has been thoroughly active on the scene since '87 and sheer longevity is enough to cement his name as a mainstay in the techno canon if the slew of techno bangers he's produced isn't enough. Barnett is unique, though, in that he made techno before it was even widely agreed to be called techno. These three new tracks for Exarde bring that genealogy along for the ride; they're full of trancey, space-age synths conjur images of flying cars and hologram video calls - a fitting cyberpunk audiovisual aesthetic that is befitting of the proto-techno magic Barnett has been making.

The percussive clatter and clanging drums of Remco Beekwilder's 'Industrofunk' are designed for main room destruction. Grindvik & OnScreenActor go for a caustic world of rusty synth textures and clattering drums on 'Perfectly Crushed!' and CASKO's 'Revenge Spells' bangs the box with manic vocal loops and edgy sirens building paranoid techno tension. Domenico Crisci's 'Driving On The SS7' is the mind-melting synth laden workout to finish this EP in style.

Review: Border One is an alias for Steven Petit, who has been exploring tough, tunnelling techno since 2015 and taking in prominent labels like Wolfskuil, Token and Voltage along the way. Now he makes a return to SK_Eleven with four formidable workouts pitched towards the most serious of dancefloors. Just listen to the creeping drones sweeping through the middle distance on 'Optical Void' and you'll know this record is no laughing matter. 'Inner Sight' is possibly the most psychoactive track on the EP thanks to its relentlessly looping synth phrases, but in fairness each and every one of these tracks will work wonders when you want to get everyone locked in good and proper.

Review: Marco Bailey is a rising techno star, and his pal Sigvard is of a similarly sizzling stature. Both hailing from one of techno's many homelands, Belgium, their new EP 'Black Radion' indulges no nonsense in its establishment of a vinyl-ready, minimal and electric sound. Each track here effectively follows the simplest-ever formula of drums n' synth line; the wyvernal wafter that is 'Draco' builds its excitement using all but a ith a simple drum build and a zapping 'neow', while 'Attor' cuts a similarly machinic mood through slippery window-wiper leads and a muddy low end.

Review: Marco Bailey is a Belgian DJ and producer who's remained active since the late 90s - his commitment to a hard and assembly-liney industrial techno sound has seen him lend his chops to the likes of Drumcode, Intec, and MB Elektronics in later years. 'Wild Out' is an EP brought to Fundaments, and best represents the artist's latest headspace: wild as ever. Highlights include 'Careless Spectrum', which isn't afraid of indunging higher-end, leady trance tropes, and 'Royal Resistance', which once again mixes bright bursts of stabbing sheen into a gritty techno backbone. The latter track hints at developing the motif more, but smartly pulls back, leaving us panting, begging for more.

Review: Wavy, acidic, subtly trance-y, and resolutely deep. BOHM drops four pieces on the right side of tech for snobs to get on board (we're not getting involved in that), which owe plenty to the likes of John Tejada, A Sagittariun's early work, and others that have mastered the art of crafting tracks that we can safely listen to softly and still find plenty to talk about, but heard loud and in a club will take on a new, all-commanding power. At least that's the case with 'Light Transmission' and 'Solar Limit', which open the scoring here. Moving forward, B-side pair 'Unsolved Origin' and 'Monarch Monster' take some complexities out of the equation, respectively opting for more pared back bounce and stripped down, old-school hued electro. Both also work very well indeed - hence the recommendation here.

Review: Here comes Eli Brown, a Bristol-based techno and tech house producer who knows how to make his tracks sound absolutely massive. He's dropped on Toolroom, Of Unsound Mind, Moon Harbour, Relief and Repopulate Mars amongst many others, and now he's hit the big one, Drumcode. Brown's more than ready for Adam Beyer's label, bringing the high-pressure goods on the likes of 'Deep Down' and 'Nazareth', using that essential low-end boom and plenty of nervy acid up top, keeping the drums piling on hard and teasing the drama in his gargantuan productions. If you like it big, which you should do if you're checking Drumcode, then this EP has everything you need.

The Washington-based artist is an exciting new talent: said to be a nomad who takes in various influences and can never be pinned down to one style. Drum 'n' bass was said to be a huge influence on Bangura during his younger years back in Alabama, and he revisits those seminal beats here on Interpretation Of Sound. From the contorted groove of 'Big Change', a sharp stepper that incorporates dub techno influences, to the meditative and polyrhythmic hypnotism of 'The Diffuser' or the depressive jungle introspections of 'Taking Loose' - this one really takes the genre into exciting new realms. Review: Two sides of mega-minimal, textural minimal and a dash of drone here, shared equally between friends Bastian Balders and Anton Kubikov. The producers bring a sophistication to the tech, reflecting the huge variation in the emotions they indulge. Something between ecstasy and horror is heard on Balders' 'Machinery', while Kubikov's 'Introland' is comparatively hopeful and tearjerking, with its delayed piano refractions and filtery-in-and-out strings.

Review: Andre Kronert's ODD/EVEN label is billed as "a wide open space and blank canvas for friends and peers to release music that Andre himself will include is his DJ sets." Stepping into that open space for this one is Boston 168 with a trio of uncompromising techno cuts. The opener 'Oddworld' has booming bottom ends and percussion that grows ever more persuasive and raw while the acidic synths are tight and taught and tense. 'Oddysee' is less tightly controlled, with the synths spraying about the mix over more brutal and rusted metal drum loops. 'Telephatic Acid' closes out with some wall-rattling techno swing. Lovely stuff.
