Symbiosis (double 12")
Cat: SUSH 60. Rel: 06 Feb 23
Symbiosis 1 (8:48)
Symbiosis 2 (6:39)
Symbiosis 3 (2:50)
Symbiosis 4 (8:04)
Symbiosis 5 (7:20)
Symbiosis 6 (7:52)
Review: After having two of his earlier tunes remodelled by Carl Craig and Mike Huckaby thanks to Sushitech, Detroit's Delano Smith re-emerges on the label with a double pack of tunes made with Brawther under the D&B Productions. That moniker has more to do with the pair's name rather than a suddenly conversion to drum & bass, although there's a love of dubby effects and deep bass power here that - at a stretch - could be said to be in common. The six tracks - Symbiosis' 1-6 - are smooth and simple, but executed with an ear (or four) for an irresistible groove, an economic but rhythmic keyboard stab and a knack for squeezing something nicely soulful from the barest ingredients. Nice work indeed.

Bumblebee (7:53)
Jawbreaker (7:27)
Review: German masked crusader Boris Brejcha returns this week with another set of massive hi-tech minimal anthems on the esteemed Frankfurt imprint Harthouse. Club Vibes Part 02 features the strobed-out main room locomotion of 'Bumblebee' featuring all the hypnotic elements, white noise build-ups and clipped rhythms you've come to know him for, while over on the flip he treats you to the emotive and bittersweet tech house journey 'Jawbreaker' which once again displays his clever use of melody on another 'maximal' masterpiece by the FCKNG SERIOUS head honcho.

Sit Back & Take It Down (10:30)
Review: German innovator Boris Brejcha had a couple of solid releases drop at the tail end of December 2022. As well as an entire double pack of fresh tunes he has also served up this Club Vibes Part 05 12" on Harthouse. 'Black Unicorn' opens up and is a playful tech groove with some bright melodies dropping in from above as a twisted bassline and crispy drums get you locked in below. On the flipside is 'Sit Back & Take It Down' which is another lively and elastic groove with colourful chords and some dark vocals over blasts of synth. Two useful tech tools for sure.

Knocking Birds (7:09)
LSD Waterpipe (8:03)
Review: Big week for the inimitable Boris Brejcha, who returns with a vengeance on the fourth installment of the Club Vibes series. Heavy duty peak time artillery takes aim at you on this one, featuring A-side cut 'Knocking Bars' which is exactly the kind of maximalism you've come to know and love from the German producer, that will definitely have you reaching for the lasers. Over on the flip however, the FCKING SERIOUS co-head will have you pogo-ing on the dancefloor amongst all the many hands in the air on the playful minimal funk of 'LSD Waterpipe' incorporating mesmerising melodies and his cheeky spoken word vocals.

Hadal Zone (4:13)
Hadal Zone (James Ruskin remix) (4:37)
Decompression (Makaton remix) (6:28)
Decompression (4:08)
Review: The seemingly unstoppable rise of De:tuned continues, as they take a break from serving up sci-fi techno, IDM and ambient techno to deliver something a lot more intense: a surprise EP from original House of God Birmingham resident DJ Paul 'Damage' Bailey. Channeling the spirit of his friend Surgeon while offering up something fresh, the two original tracks on show are undeniably inspired. 'Hadal Zone' adds weirdo noises, bleeps and mind-mangling electronic pulses to a slipped Afro-techno groove, while 'Decompression' is a wonky, triple-time workout full of Ket-addled electronics and wayward loops. Makaton re-imagines that track as a locked-in late-night techno throb-job, while James Ruskin turns 'Hadal Zone' into a buzzing, industrial-influenced electro-bleep number.

Fizz City (5:18)
Fourth Dimensional (5:03)
Micro 8's (5:04)
Review: You can always rely on Blawan to deliver the brutalist techno goods and that's exactly what he does here. This new double 12" on Ternesc opens with UK funky drums and wild percussive patterns as well as some signature mangled voices. There is also hyper speed industrial minimalism on 'The Sithe' that captures the sound of a factory in meltdown, spangled synths and eerie dub atmospheres on 'Silver' and unrelenting rave techno on 'Fizz City.' Add in two more hard to define fusions of mutant sound design, busted rhythms and dystopian moods and you have a spell binding EP indeed.

N-Ter - "We Will Emerge" (4:46)
Review: The Spanish Hypnotic Collective label attempts to capture its take on the Detroit Legacy with what looks like a new series of various artists' EP. There is plenty of Motor City soul in the gorgeous synths of Cignol's muted acid and deep house opener 'Distance' which is a soothing and reverential groove, but then its pure party from Barce, Alex Martin offers up 313 style tech and three further tunes on the flip explore blistering electro with high-speed funk and cosmic intent. Mission accomplished and we're already looking forward to the next one.

My Name Is (6:21)
My Name Is (dub) (6:19)
Review: The Tabby Traxx label takes a fanatic bow here with healthy amounts of acid from Matthew Brian. His My Name Is EP is classic tech and minimal with characterful samples up top and driving drums down low. The 303 is a winky one that weaves its way in and out of the drums and grows ever more wild. Some manic percussion and dark spoken word loops add to the heart of the dance floor vibe. 'My Name Is' (dub) offers something a little more direct and stripped back for those late night sessions.

Biocym - "Sabotage" (6:34)
Review: Amsterdam collective Forsvarlig Arkiv is branching out with a new label that is going to represent what they are all about. This debut EP, 'Arkiv I', comes after many years of expert curating of their podcast series and welcomes four different, equally vital artists to offer up some fresh techno. Forest On Stasys kicks off with 'Sunken', a swamp and gurgling bit of mind-melting sound design, Zemog's 'A'te' then rides on silky, meditative loops with rising synth tension and Eyvind Blix follows a similar path with a more psychedelic edge. Biocym shuts down with 'Sabotage', a more percussive and edgy sound for late-night freaks.

Review: Black Merlin aka George Thompson is a veteran producer who makes a debut on the Transmigration sub label Crystal Ceremony and soon shows his class. First up is 'Morphik Uniform' with its wispy pads and supple minimal drums saving as a vehicle for interplanetary travel. 'Distance' is a bumpier ride as the broken kick patterns make you move while heavenly pads bring softness up top. There is a mind-melting Millsian element to 'Makio' than burrows deep into the darkest corners of the cosmos and 'Aft Xt' then ends in a hurry with unrelenting drums bubbling away beneath pulsating synths.

Review: Blue Hour is very close to a quarter of a century of releases but just ahead of that notable milestone the label daunter and eponymous techno project step up with two bangers on a nice limited 12". 'Dimensions' is a brilliantly unbalanced techno workout with distant church bells bringing some unusual chaos to the high-speed drums and prickly percussion. It's a great one that will cut any floor loose. 'Sun Dogz' on the flip gets even quicker and fires lasers out like bullets. High octane stuff that is pure fire for the club.

Review: Batu has proven himself hugely capable of making a wide range of music. He might be best known for his perfect techno designs but here delves further into the world of ambient. Across four tracks he explores a number of moods with painterly synth work that is detailed with gentle percussion, gorgeous keys, and in the case of 'Flown,' jazzy splashes of cymbal. 'Half Speed' is idk a slow awakening on a distant planet. 'The Fifth' brings more bright and energy synth motifs and 'Seams' is a soothing lullaby. A beautifully escapist listen.

Tea Party (4:50)
On The Floor (6:04)

Word For Word (4:16)
Review: Legendary minimal - and acid house before that - pioneer Baby Ford very much set the blueprint for the genre back in the late 90s, both solo and with The Ifach Collective, who featured Ian Loveday, Mark Broom and Thomas Melchior (amongst others). Now they are reminding us of the greatness of that work with the first in a series of reissues coming in 2023. These tunes were originally put out back on the legendary Klang Elektronik in 2000. First up is 'Tea Party' by Eon, M-Core, and Baby Ford, an ice-cold rolling dub. 'On The Floor' with Mark Broom gets more percussive and then comes a solo cut from Baby Ford, 'The Healing' which is as heady as can be and finally 'Word For Word' featuring Cheru Amadi layers up slithers of silvery percussion and cuddly bass into dubbed-out tech heaven.

Review: In 1735, Swedish scientist Carl Linneaus theorised the hierarchical classes of the natural world, paving the way for modern taxonomy as we know it. In tributary fashion, 012 Records, hailing from Berlin, present the second edition of 'Systema Naturae II', an EP series dedicated to Linnaeus and nature. Alone At Pisecka 12 (7:08)
Review: New York label and party Mister Saturday always brings roughed up, raw and steamy house grooves. This new one is no exception to that unwritten rule and it comes from Russell El Butler who serves up four platters that matter. 'Blah Blah' is a brilliantly brainless house romp with vocal loops and distorted kicks making you march. 'Kruymska' is more tight and taught thanks to the pinging kick drums and molten melodies up top, while 'Tout Va Bien' is a late night cut that glistens thanks to its prickly bass and razor sharp hats. 'Alone At Pisecka 12' closes out in malfunctioning fashion to round out a wide-ranging EP.

No Hate (Trippy mix) (6:07)
Review: You have to respect Adam Beyer for still being a real techno overlord these days. He has been on the scene almost since day one, as has his trusty Drumcode label, and they are both still winning over new generations of fans with their direct to dancefloor style. This latest missive is another monster starting with the hard and heavy drums of 'Robotic Arms' which comes with just enough detail from the sic-fi vocals and synths to get you locked, then the anthemic 'No Hate' is sure to become a big one for Beyer with its rolling drum funk and repeatable vocals. A Trippy Mix is a more wild and frankly better version.

Elephant's Toothpaste (5:46)
Review: The Partout label turns its attention back to its UK series with a fine four tracker here from Bufo Bufo. The whole thing is steeped in UK sounds with elements of rave never far away. 'Fata Morgana' has a dumpy beat that swings from one foot to the other while old school stabs light up the track from above. 'Hidden Key' ups the ante with a more hard hitting groove and more old school motifs, this time in the bass. 'Two Minutes To Midnight' is the waviest of the lot with sirens going off, rinsing breakbeats and turbo charged bass going deep. 'Elephant's Toothpaste' then cut up a more lumpy groove with bleeps and pulses making it a soothing groove for 5am.

Review: Next up from the leading label in the world of so-called Business Techno are a couple of contemporary remixes of some Adam Beyer classics. His Restore My Soul EP was written with DJ Rush and now gets reworked by modern day greats ANNA and HI-LO. The latter, a regular on the likes of Filth on Acid, goes first and flips the title track into a bruising and panel beaten techno roller with coarse drums and peak time intent. Brazilian talent ANNA then offers a more subversive and slow boring take on 'Control' that has twitchy synths and firmly rooted techno drums.

Review: The Dutch techno veteran Bart Skils is back with another impressive release on the mighty Drumcode. 'Horsepower' is a relentless peak-time techno track that is sure to captivate dance floors and have the crowd moving with its chugging energy. It builds steadily, leading to an epic breakdown before unleashing the full power of its steely groove, making it perfect for those heads-down moments in the main room. On the B-side, 'Sunshine In The Dust' takes a more straightforward and functional approach with its variety of female vocal parts, catchy bongo drums, and a sexy horn sound. It's a groove-driven track that is both sultry and infectious.

Review: The big room techno don that is Adam Beyer is back with more potent techno weaponry on his own Drumcode label, this time with part two of the 12th volume of his A-Sides series. His 'Take Me There' is first up in remix form and Carl Cox flips it into a surging peak time roller. Matt Guy's 'Give Me What I Want' is an emotive banger with big synth energy and reverberating vocals while ADHS's '2STEP' hits hard with its flaming drums and trance-y synths. Living Leaving (part 1)
Living Leaving (part 2)
Review: Quite how this 12" on FXHE from the unheralded Tom Bugs came about isn't clear, though we'd like to think Omar S got chatting to the Bristol based producer and builder of Modular synths over a pint of Guinness in a Stokes Croft pub before a gig. Whilst few people would fancy the unenviable task of following up the huge recent LP from Omar S, Bugs shows enough ingenuity on this Living Leaving 12" to make him a perfect fit for FXHE. Nestling in at the dubby end of the FXHE spectrum, like a sleepy eyed Luke Hess, both parts of "Living Leaving" demonstrate that Bugs mastery of obvious modular synths is also blessed with an innate understanding of lo-fi melodics. Indeed there's a freeform sense to how they unfurl which hints that Bugs committed these straight to tape. Another fine FXHE transmission!

Review: Drumcode's Elevate series hits a third instalment here and this time it is a three tracker with solo cuts from three big names. Tini Gessler kicks off with 'Nothing Expected' which is a teeth-gritting and white knuckle techno roller. Marie Vaunt serves up monstrously large and slamming kicks on 'Technology' and then runs them through with brutal synth lines that spray about with their own dark energy. It's a truly edgy cut before BEC's 'Humanoid' layers up hard tech drums that slam down firmly with a warped lead which leads you late into the night. A trio of high impact weapons, for sure.

BJARKI will also serve as a creative platform to launch a wealth of forthcoming audiovisual projects, so stay tuned. 'I Wanna Go Home' may be tongue-in-cheek but be warned: it is one serious banger of a track, and equally as playful is steely warehouse techno epic 'Woo!' up next. Review: Two right legends of techno unite here for the latest release on Drumcode. Label chief Adam Beyer presents 'Restore My Soul' featuring Chicago hard techno veteran DJ Rush, their relationship stretching back nearly three decades from when they both started out in the' 90s. The title track is aimed squarely at the main room dancefloor; a seething, mental groove featuring Rush's stern vocal delivery atop, before taking the energy levels into the peak time on the adrenalised thrasher 'Control'. Review: Upstairs Asylum Recordings is one of the many seminal Detroit labels run by local legend Norm Talley. It's right in the middle of a busy run right now with no fewer superb run with three new EPs all dropping in quick succession. This one is a split EP with US duo Solid Gold Playaz taking care of the a-side. As always with this pair, their sounds are deep and dusty house with exquisite melodies tugging at the heart. They say that "Instinctive Senses is a compilation focusing on precise and cutting sonorities." We say it is a fresh techno offering with plenty of interesting details. Grafin drops 'Vespers' which is tightly looped and quick as hell then SDB & B2 get more dark, heavy and gritty on the twisted 'Reunite.' Though the Swede himself doesn't feature, some of his trusty sidemen do starting with Chris Avantgarde who brings big room, hard techno energy to 'The Last Time'. He returns to London's Legwork label with a selection of high-def sonic workouts on Brother Says Relax. He now steps out to launch his own new label A Long Strange Dream, with a five track EP that runs the stylistic gamut from ambient to raw and futurist techno. Churning bass and hefty hits one up 'Traverse' which rides on a menacing bassline and is action packed from front to back. Review: James Bangura is up next on New York City's Mister Saturday Night. The Washington-based artist is an exciting new talent: said to be a nomad who takes in various influences and can never be pinned down to one style. Drum 'n' bass was said to be a huge influence on Bangura during his younger years back in Alabama, and he revisits those seminal beats here on Interpretation Of Sound. From the contorted groove of 'Big Change', a sharp stepper that incorporates dub techno influences, to the meditative and polyrhythmic hypnotism of 'The Diffuser' or the depressive jungle introspections of 'Taking Loose' - this one really takes the genre into exciting new realms. Tip!

Oddworld (6:00)
Oddysee (6:35)
Telephatic Acid (6:03)
Review: Andre Kronert's ODD/EVEN label is billed as "a wide open space and blank canvas for friends and peers to release music that Andre himself will include is his DJ sets." Stepping into that open space for this one is Boston 168 with a trio of uncompromising techno cuts. The opener 'Oddworld' has booming bottom ends and percussion that grows ever more persuasive and raw while the acidic synths are tight and taught and tense. 'Oddysee' is less tightly controlled, with the synths spraying about the mix over more brutal and rusted metal drum loops. 'Telephatic Acid' closes out with some wall-rattling techno swing. Lovely stuff.

100% Juice (Sampler mix) (4:01)
Contigo (4:46)
Nod To The D (5:51)
Spiked (3:59)
Review: Following the release of his blisteringly heavy Funfzig album on Rekids last year, Mark Broom returns to Matt Edwards' imprint with a teaser for the hotly anticipated follow-up, 100% Juice. As you'd expect, there's no messing around from the UK techno veteran, with opener '100% Juice (Sampler Mix)' delivering a bowel-bothering, cranium-snapping blend of rave-igniting, minor key stabs, booming bass and stomping beats. In contrast, 'Contingo' is trippy in tone thanks to all manner of overlapping synth lines, while 'Nod To The D' sees Broom blend his own drum machine-driven take on techno with vintage Motor City sounds. Rounding off a rock-solid EP is 'Spiked', a raw and razor-sharp techno throb-job primed for peak-time floors.

Second Shift (5:06)
Final Call (5:47)
Review: Al Wootton rarely releases material from other artists on Trule, so when he does you can guarantee the music in question will be rather special. That's certainly the case with this surprise EP from rising star Porter Brook, a Sheffield-born member of the Groundwork family whose dark, atmospheric and claustrophobic take on techno - with more than a dash of UK bass influence - is as industrial as the city of his birth. Over the course of four fantastic tracks, we're treated to ghostly, sub-heavy broken techno melancholia ('Trakt II'), intense early morning industrial techno dystopia ('Lipsius', a real early morning treat), crunchy breakbeat minimalism doused in concrete-clad aural textures ('Second Shift') and hushed, dubbed-out breakbeat techno ('Final Call').

Bawrut - "Clapa" (7:01)
Review: Grown-up techno label Kompkat has always served up its most dancefloor ready sounds as part of the Speicher series and it is now up to an impressive 129 installments. This one kicks off with Hunter/Game & U S H N U's collaboration 'Reload' which is an electric cut with bright synth lines shimmering about the mix next to thunderous claps and dark future vocals. On the flip, Bawrut cuts loose with rave stabs over dense percussive grooves with vocal snatches adding to the unsettling and boisterous mood of 'Clapa', which does indeed also have plenty of claps.

X Termal - "What If" (The Doulo Klan edit)
Bugger - "No Silence Now"
Umbra - "The Big Dumb"
Review: MELMAK's new 12" is entitled All Stars: The Rave Years which gives you an idea of what to expect. These are high-tempo, dense and rave ready sounds from the drum & bass vanguard. There is plenty of space out cosmic energy to the exploratory leads of X Termal's 'Tragnal Kozze' then 'What If' (The Doulo Klan edit) is a tightly coiled stepper. Bugger lays down a hyper speed rhythm with drilling bass and slapping hits on 'No Silence Now' and Umbra's 'The Big Dumb' is a real slow-motion churner with textural synths and alien sound designs. All four are ready to get the party going in different ways.

Review:  There is a reason Mark Broom is still so revered in techno circles after all these years. He has a knack for sound design and crafting such powerful kicks that his tunes are always irresistible to both DJs and dancers. He offers up two more high grade weapons here for the second release on Beard Man. First is the maximal minimalism of the bendy 'Loop 132' with its glitchy hits and undulating synths, then comes the more driving and uplifting dub techno banger 'Loop 131.' The titles of these tunes make you wonder just how many of these this man has sitting on his computer ready to go.

You Know What's Gone (6:11)
This Is For Decor Only (7:43)
Review: Barnt returns for a weighty, new wavey three-tracker on Kompakt, not quite straying from his trademark minimal tech style, but nevertheless working in novel elements. 'This Is For The Decor Only' is a glistening ambient trance cut, working in detuned leads and melodic 'woahs' (woah indeed), while 'You Know What's Gone' recalls everything from mid-80s body music, new romantic dance, and medieval music. 'Fan' is the ambient closer, revealing the producer's musical talents far beyond that of mere dance music. As Barnt says, he wanted to touch on a "ceremonial, emotional, grand spirit", and he's achieved just that.

Simone Bauer - "Gigantomachia" (5:53)
Review: Legendary label Le Disque celebrates its 35th Anniversary with this new various artists EP offering up the sort of sumptuous sounds it is so well known for. Cosmic legend Daniele Baldelli gets first with the driving Italo techno-disco of 'Promeni' while GNMR bangs the box with his leggy 909 drum pings and heady synth swirls on 'Modulo Rmx Downtempo V1.' On the flip, Tagliabue's 'Sogno Cosmico' is a deep and pulsing techno cut that roams at a slower tempo but is no less effective, then Simone Bauer's 'Gigantomachia' is a hyperactive and cutting edge rhythm piece that never sits still and is dark as you like in its ritualistic dance manoeuvres.

Review: Italian label Weapons of Mass Love kicks off with its first vinyl release here - and a pretty one it is too with an all-pink 12". Riko Forinson is the man in charge of the originals and he pairs hefty drum weight with cosmic synth work on the house slash techno opener 'Portamento'. 'Hi' has some leggy drum funk at its core with detuned chords, filtered vocals and squelchy effects adding the details. 'Door Bell' picks up with some squelchy electronic house funk and then a version of 'Hi' featuring Benoit and Butane's Glide remix of 'Portamento' close out an atmospheric house EP.

Review: Well Curated is a series of releases and parties that - in its own words - "reflects the ethnomusicology of the last 50 years of music" - and aims to reach into all genres, merging classic styles and breaking down barriers. Steve Spacek occupies the A-side with the breezy broken beat and soul-in-space of 'Alone In Da Sun', while Lukid's 'Hair Of The Dog' is a more intense counterpart, with wobbling sub-bass and swirling, surging atmospherics hovering above.

Review: UK producer Ben Walker aka Beneath is back after a three year hiatus, with his latest coming out on Bristol's Livity Sound. The No Symbols/Mistry Muzik chief brings on the dark subterranean vibes on opening cut 'Fourth Time', while the stirring drums of 'High Five' will entrance you, awash in a haunting and multi-layered atmosphere. The boss himself offers up a Bluetrain special edition dub of Hidden Sequence's 'Synapse' which is all icy lines and liquid rhythms which make you think of some frozen lake on a misty morning. Review: James Bangura steps into the ring with his new Shadow Boxing EP which is named in honour of his grandfather, Carroll Daniel Smith, who boxed for the US Army in WWII. It's a punchy take on tech house from the off, with 'Hazy Recall (Airdrop mix)''s off-grid beats swinging in from all directions with same the potency as a Mike Tyson uppercut. 'Drown It Out' has a garage swing to it as it slips and sides as fluidly as Mayweather's defence and 'Shadow Boxing' floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. Last of all is 'Analyze, Socialize' which will have you on the ropes and sweating in no time.

Review: Needs' commendable charity drive continues to bring forth the goods, both in terms of good causes and world class club music. Rallying round in support of World Mental Health Day 2020, Shanti Celeste kicks the record off in style with the rapid fire, deep-diving workout 'Fantasma'. OCB keeps the pressure up with the psychotropic techno of 'RS3', while Michelle works up some delightfully freaky synths on playful jacker 'Aesthetic'. Bobby's 'Free Your Mind' is a 90s-tinged, full fat techno production indebted to Detroit, Peder Mannerfelt keeps things stripped and raw on 'Our Levels' and Yu Su weaves a beautiful tapestry of interweaving rhythms on 'Brittney'. Adam Pits' trippy techno sounds resplendent on 'Wind Tunnel' and DJ Sports completes the set with the inventive, dembow slanted funk of 'Needs Dub'.

In a roundabout way, his music is influenced by the writings of various psychedelic and bohemian movement pushers such as Timothy Leary; and the result? An empathic hybrid techno powerhouse of an EP, which urges us to love our friends through pulsing beats and raw tops.
