Review: A decade ago, New York band Midnight Magic delivered arguably THE greatest disco anthem of the 21st century, the sing-along classic that is 'Beam Me Up'. Fittingly, Razor 'N' Tape has decided to mark the record's anniversary by delivering a trio of fresh remixes. Prins Thomas' A-side remix is the most faithful to the original, though it also boasts his usual dubbed-out effects, loose and heavy disco percussion and some wriggly acid lines amongst the disco bass, melancholic horn blasts and now-familiar vocals. Review: 20 years after he released the superb (and subtly eclectic) 'Super EP', Morgan Geist has prepped a follow-up of sorts - or at least a new three-tracker that takes the same 'mixed up' approach. Many will fall head over heels in love with opener 'Twilight Express', a deliciously warm and colourful chunk of nu-disco/deep house fusion, smothered in strings played and arranged by his old pal Kelley Polar, which recalls the sound and spirit of his acclaimed Metro Area collaboration with Darshan Jesrani. On 'Black Test Car' Geist goes a little more skewed and off-beat, offering a skewed, semi-angular take on the sound explored on his Double Night Time album, while the TB-303-sporting 'Feeling Is Mutual' joins the dots between squelchy electronic disco, deep synth-pop, acidic excursions and the sci-fi futurism of his earliest techno releases.

Review: Coral City return early in 2022 with an excellent release. N&W are on duty again here with three stand-out tracks. 'Rave' the A-Side is exactly what it says on the tin. It's 808 State meets Larry Heard with a touch of Inner City. Stripped down and four to floor. Classic Roland 909 drums are met with aAhook that shakesAany dancefloor, expect early support with this. 'Speed' is a killer Nu-Disco / Boogie affair with a nod to the seedy underworld of the '80s, Picture Michelle Pfeiffer throwing shapes on the dancefloor in Scarface, and you are right on the nose. Finally, 'Cherry' is an all-out Italo / Hi-NRG workout, the linndrums, the driving arpeggio bassline and overall melancholy feel, is reminiscent of Bobby Orlando.

Review: For his latest outing on the Good Timin' imprint he set up some years back, Jex Opolis is joined by Ian D Knight. The St Louis-based performance artist notably makes his presence felt on "Look At My Car", delivering a vocal inspired by "consumerism and rampant motorism" over the NYC producer's superb, Padlock-inspired, boogie-dub groove. The Compass Point influence also comes to the fore on closer "Guitar Sands", where intertwining guitar and synthesizer motifs stretch out across a Larry Levan-friendly backing track. Review: AXNER's latest single 'Shout From The Rooftop' is as glossy and golden as disco gets with two members of Nile Rodgers' Chic in the form of drummer Ralph Rolle and vocalist Audrey Martells both helping to make it so. It's got a soaring vocal and funky basslines and gets some high-grade remix treatment here. French artist and Folamour collaborator Kousto goes for a sunny house remix with the original's riffs left in place. The legendary John Morales offers a timeless M + M main mix that brims with glorious instrumentation and nonstop grooves and the one and only Al Kent brings his magic touch to a perfect Balearic sound with some superb Rhodes solos.

It features four of his freshest tunes to date and if the title is anything to go by it could be the start of a fine new series. Things start all sensuous on 'Let's Stay Together' before the stylish cosmic disco Rhdoes and smooth grooves of 'Don't Give Up (I Believe In You)' and breezy, hip swing charms of 'Pleasure' make a great impression. Review: Yse Saint Laur'ant makes wonky, left-of-centre sounds for proper underground parties. He's done so for years, and now returns with more of his raw and inventive disco on the sought-after Vinyl Only label. Opener 'Bad Company' pairs visceral arps with glossy pads and soulful vocal, which is stripped away from the 'Better Company' version. On the flipside, 'Don't Look Back' is a more freewheeling and funky feel, with silky basslines and hip swing claps under buttery vocals. Last of all is a classic chug-disco gem. It's a superb house offering with lashings of soulful groovers, all produced by Josh Milan. First out of the blocks is 'Last Night Changed It All' featuring Lawrence Clark on sax. It's a jam that will pack out the floor but brims with real musicality from the magical Rhodes, picked bass guitar, rhythm guitar and drums. 'Crazy' is a more raw, textured percussive sound but then come plenty more feel-good grooves for sun-kissed dance floors such as 'Being Free.'

Review: Razor-N-Tape is like catnip to disco and funk lovers - the label seems to serve up endless amounts of dance floor gems and now it is a couple of sick remixes of Phenomenal Handclap Band which have got us all ready for the weekend. First up is a sublime and deep Prince Thomas Diskomiks of 'Burning Bridges' which has gloopy bass and leggy nu-disco drums all overlaid with some funky guitar work and ethereal vocals. The more slow and lumpy original is included while on the flip is 'It Was The Summer' (Each Other remix) which is laced up with restless acid tweaks and slapping hits that mark for a much darker vibe than the hazy and laidback original.

Review: Razor-N-Tape is a bastion of deep house brilliance as once again perfectly exemplified by this vibrant new package from Flamingo Pier. New Zealand collective Flamingo Pier have dropped several well received 12"s on the Soundway Records label and then came good with 2021's self titled full length. They are still all about bringing happy, sunny vibes to a tropical disco template here with the likes of the synth lead 'How 2 Feel' then funky vocal pumper 'Remedy'. There are cosmic rays lighting up the big chords and aloof vocals of 'Beneath The Neon' then a couple of remixes on the flip bring more dubby disco-house sounds.

Review: Andrew 'Emperor Machine' Meecham and French vocalist Severine Moultin enjoyed working on their first collaborative single, 2021's 'Dance Par Amour', so last year reunited in the studio to record a follow-up. 'Your Own Style' follows a similar sonic template, with Mouletin singing in accented English atop a typically analogue-heavy Meecham backing track laden with bubbly bass, delay-laden electric piano motifs, layered percussion and the producer's trademark synth squiggles (a feature of his work since the days he was working with Dean Meredith as Chicken Lips). The song is presented in three variations: the stretched-out and pleasingly loose 'Alternative Mix'; the sparse, effects-laden and mid-80s influenced 'Dub Vocal'; and the warmer, subtly funkier 'Fun Dub'.

Review: Los Angeles' producer Luxxury has long specialised in the kind of opaque, warming, stylish and melodious fare that tends towards the timeless - retro-futurist, yacht-rock-tinged fusions of disco, AOR, synth-pop, boogie and blue-eyed soul that sounds like it was tailor-made to listen to while cruising down the Pacific highway in an early '80s convertible. Alright, his latest album, sees him subtly tweak that sound further and in the process deliver his most consistently entertaining full-length excursion to date. Review: Eddie Logix makes his return to Rocksteady Disco fold with this fresh new 12", 'Flight Risk'. It's a varied affair that pulls from a wide range of genres including leftfield, deep house, disco, Afrobeat, and even Balearic. Review: Daniel Klein's first album as SIRS, last year's "Banana Hard & Disco Kisses", was something of a slept-on gem, packed to the rafters with summery, disco-tinged treats. Here he showcases a quartet of new versions of tracks from that set, courtesy of a quietly impressive line-up of remixers. Austin Alto kicks things off with a chunky, synth-bass-propelled house revision of "Night Wind", before Yam Who brilliantly re-imagines Stee Downes collaboration "Forever" as a string-laden slab of revivalist disco-boogie warmth. Elsewhere, previously unheard bonus cut "Turkish Disco Folk" is a percussive and off-kilter affair that lives up to its title, while the Danilo Braca Acid Orchestra Remix of Bee Gees cover "If I Can't Have You" is a sparkling slab of nu-disco/electro fusion.

Review: The rather legendary Heavenly label is always hard to pin down. It has put out a dizzying array of music that pretty much redefines what the word eclectic can mean. Right now they are in the midst of releasing a series of collections of remixes. Once again this one is an eye-opening and ear-popping journey through sound as a well-curated mix of artists bring their own perspectives and reframe the original tunes. They take them into new worlds and in between genres that are all best heard at night, in some well-loved space with the lights down low.

Review: Brazilian producer Processman is something of a rising star, albeit one awaiting a breakthrough (most of his previous appearances have been on compilations or via collaborations). This first solo single for File Under Disco, featuring vocalist Cody, may well provide that breakthrough. Opener 'Adupe' is genuinely brilliant - a cheery, carnival-ready nu-disco number rich in sing-along Portuguese vocals, thickset sub-bass, starry electronics, colourful boogie synths and infectious Latin percussion. Razor'N'Tape co-founder JKriv provides a fine remix, offering a toughened-up groove, heavier percussion and more use of the original mix's short TB-303 motifs, before Processman and Cady return with nu-disco-goes-house jam 'Sou Biana'. Dicky Trisco provides an inspired rework, adding a classic Latin disco feel - via Clavinets, piano solos and sweeping strings - to take the track to another level altogether.

Review: Heavenly Recordings has always been a place where anything goes. From genuinely brave folk to dazzling disco, lush broken beat and jazz to alternative indie, the label has done it all. This fifth collection of remixes of label material focuses more on club sounds. It features a clued-up list of producers from the veterans like Ewan Pearson who adds his own unique spin to Out Cold's 'All I Want' via new school techno and noise specialist Daniel Avery and his take on David Holmes's 'Hope Is The Last Thing To Die.' Thrilling stuff, for sure.

Review: Imagine a Dance'o'drome: some dastardly mixture of a David Cronenberg's Videodrome, perhaps, and a giant colourful tube-socked festival ala Electric Daisy Carnival. Whatever inspired French producer and DJ Yuksek to envision such a coinage, we'd like to know. This new full-length project from the artist contains 12 tracks of walloping sunset disco, colourful experiments house and funk, and guest appearances by Breakbot, Queen Rose, Polo & Pan and more. The album is described as "a tribute to the dancefloors of the world" and "a celebration of freedom and joy".

Review: After All Is Well visited his friend Martin Iveson in his UK studio, the pair had lay down a few killer cuts, but the most standout of the lot was this one, which is sort of what it might sound like if Jean-Michel Jarre did Norwegian Cosmic disco. It's defined by the Korg Monopoly's weird paraphony and is rhythmically sustained by the Arp 2600 Bass line. Who else to remix but the legendary Prins Thomas, who layers in deep, funky bass, then Telephones explore the edges of the cosmos with a Subspace mix before a beatless version is also included.

Review: Rose Robinson's debut album as Tigerbalm, 2022's International Love Affair, was a genuinely glorious affair in which she wrapped indigenous instrumentation and all manner of global music influences around grooves rooted in cosmic disco, nu-disco, proto-house, Italo and Balearic beats. This palette of influences once again comes to the fore on this remixed version, which boasts some of her favourite artists rework tracks from the LP. It's all killer, no filler - as the old saying goes - with our picks including Session Victim''s percussive deep house fix of 'Cocktail D'Amore', Isaac Soto's devilishly dubbed-out interpretation of 'La Brisa', a hybrid jazz-funk/Balearic soul re-build of 'Cosmic Camel' by Mystic Jungle, and a predictably proto-house leaning vocal interpretation of 'Tokyo Business' by Andrew Meecham AKA The Emperor Machine.

Review: Detroit Stories is, first and foremost, the name of a recent social experiment in Motor City, USA. Largely broadcast on social media like Instagram, it consists of interviews with OG residents and immigrants from way back - the ones who've lived through the city's many ups and downs - we hear got stories of good times, hard work, and opportunities, but also struggles, violence, and social upheavals, all of which helped shaped Detroit's rise and slow fall. Secondly but not least, 'Detroit Stories' is also the name of Daughters And Sons' (Luca Fronza's) latest EP, which plunges the sampleable depths of these interviews to effuse a deep and inexorable sense of the city's cultural significance, not only as the heartland of Fordism (the dominant ideology in whose shadow even humble music reviewers like ourselves live), but also the place, where, without coincidence, techno originated. Coming with a remix by Prins Thomas, star track 'Gipsy' is especially well-suited to the city's obverse mood, combining the glitz of industrial opportunism, a Detroit-endemic Christian religiosity, and a nomadic core theme, all via ploddingly militant beats and a twinging lead synth whistle.

Review: Ignore the title of this one because despite what it may sound like, this new album from Roisin Murphy is not in fact a look back at her greatest hits, even though there have been many. Instead it's a new collection of new tunes produced by the masterful DJ Koze. The pair has worked together before, so Murphy is in safe hands. Musically, it's a genre-straddling, style-bending affair whose strong songs - rich in sing-along choruses, thoughtful lyrics and musical hooks aplenty - are presented in vivid colour (with plenty of sparkling organic instrumentation). Recent singles 'Cuckoo' and 'The Universe' already became instant classics, with many more likely to follow.

That much is proved by his third album, and first for three years, Reunion.
