Review: The second installment of Multi-Culti's Moon Faze Sun Gaze series is a typically psychedelic affair, with an impressive cast of producers delivering a quintet of trippy workouts. Von Party & Dreems join forces to present "Wet Raga", a spaced-out combination of delay-laden drums, space disco electronics, and Eastern mysticism. The ever-reliable Red Axes fuses heavy post-punk bass, with punchy percussion and minimal wave melodies on the excellent "Boosha Gdola", while Dreems go solo on the weirdo acid-electro bubbler "Sine O'The Tymes". Nick Murray and Kris Baha underpin psychedelic disco electronics with the heavyweight throb of house on "Say Something", before Cocolo draws proceedings to a close with the pitched-down shuffle of analogue wobbler "F33lings".

Review: Having built their reputation through 12" singles for the likes of Crosstown Rebels and Poker Flat, Dan Berkson and James What deliver their debut album, on their freshly minted imprint Modelmaker. Interestingly, Keep Up Appearances is an altogether warmer, melodious and more evocative set than you'd perhaps expect, with a smattering of rich downtempo cuts joining a solid selection of dancefloor-friendly deep house. You can hear a classic dub techno influence in cuts such as "Keep Up Appearances" and "Shadow Theory", while the acid-flecked, soul-soaked "Make It True" sounds like classic Osunlade. Best of all, though, are the more forthright efforts, with the ragged "Seraphim" standing out.

Review: Whenever we get wind of a new DJ Koze 12", we're hooked. Few artists are as left of centre and loveable as Stefan Kozalla, the Pampa Music boss who has recently worked with Roisin Murphy on her essential new album. Here he is in solo mode on 'Wespennest' though Sophia Kennedy features on what is a dreamy and deep house cut awash with fizzing synths that radiant the same heat as a summer sun. 'Candidasa' is a more intense and dense sound with myriad different melodies all interweaving tightly. Two interesting cuts, as you would expect.

But now Ghostly International step up and press it to two 12"s, with both black and coloured green versions as well as a CD version available. It was a fine announcement of his arrival back then and still stands apart today.

Review: For fans of off-kilter, minimalistic dance music, there is little more exciting than seeing the words "Ricardo Villalobos remix" printed on to the label of a brand-new record. For all his faults, Villalobos rarely delivers a duff rework, and he's once again hot gold with these revisions of experimental art-rock ensemble Low Island. He first tackles 'Feel Low Again', reinventing the indie-rock cut as a low-slung chunk of woozy minimal techno full of drifting vocals, bubbly electro bass, distant cymbals and snare-heavy beats. On the flip Villalobos reworks 'Don't Let The Light In', offering a slightly less dense and undeniably energetic take full of oddly-tuned electro bass, glitchy sounds, hazy chords and layered vocal samples.

Review: Since launching last year, Barac's Shamandrum label has become a must-check for those who like their club cuts to be psychedelic or mind-altering. He kicks off the imprint's fourth EP by reconstructing Marina Verdi's mesmerising, beat-free vocal cut "Shamanwoman" (track two), brilliantly re-imagining the track as a slowly-building chunk of hallucinatory tech-house laden with wiggly acid bass, hypnotic drums and pulsing electronic motifs. As he has done on all of the label's previous releases, Barac provides an original production of his own on the flip. "Who Says Imagination Isn't Reality" is nominally tech-house, though the track's locked-in electronic rhythm, creepy synthesizer melodies and bubbly acid lines are a world away from bog-standard peak-time "tech". In a word: impressive.

Review: This is the thirrd release by the amazing Italian producer Ivan Iacobucci for the Perlon label. The previous two were so well received, this next one was destined to come out sooner than later. Perlon fans know what to expect from their label of choice and Ivan delivers the goods. Those addictively quirky and fonky jackin' minimal techno jams. The title track is that and then some! We especially like the sexy jam 'Waiting For My Love'. Expect the unexpected when you flip over the record as 'Close the Door' is a full-on acid banger that combines high energy techno into what sounds like a video game soundtrack theme song! Closing things out is the wild sounding 'Fear & Madness in the Desert'. We are smiling at the thought of someone playing out these corkers to audience. Expect to see WTF typefaces everywhere!

Finally unveiling her skills in the studio, Marginal Returns are the lucky hosts of her debut release. On the A-side, 'Rhythm Delay' unfolds as a heady, downtempo, dub-shrouded track. For the A2, 'Foundation' picks up the pace with delicate, glass-resonatory highs and a pumping bassline. On the flip side, 'Control Change' twists and turns through wonky beats and a blissful melodic background. While the closing track, 'Attention Movement' takes a darker direction, with melancholic synths joining abstract electric guitar samples. Review: Cousin and Priori have joined forces for this new collaborative outing on the Canadian label Naff and it finds them serving up some delightfully artful and melodic minimal. '1' rides on a grubby, scruffy beat at high speed with some nice cosmic smears adding the vibes, and the Warm dub then makes things all watery and liquid. '2' has a bokken beat that makes you pop your body while twisted bell sounds are wrapped around the mix. An icy dub then closes out with a zoned out 5am feel and more deftness of touch.

Review: Newcastle label Hot Biscuit kicks off its 2024 with a new EP from TODDSONIC33. It is the first time we have come across this artist but colour us impressed. There is a fine grasp of delicate moody yet heavy drum work to the opener 'Groove Magician' that speaks of the signature Motor City sound, while 'That Track' is a mix of blistering synth modulation, hip swig claps and kick and plenty of bleeps and squeaks that will cause terror at any party. 'Enki' is another unhinged and leftfield house collision and 'Popcorn' layers sheet metal snares with a cacophony of drums.

Review: Dubtil finally launches his own label here and it's called Infrequent, which we hope won't be a case of nominative determinism. It's something minimal and tech house fans have long been wanting and this first drop doesn't disappoint. One of Romania's most accomplished DJs and producers lays out a fine vision here with the spaced out tech funk of 'I' kicking off with its dreamy pads and clipped beats. 'II' is even more out of this world with its wiry synths and aline life forms over heftier drums, then 'III' closes out with brilliant drum programming, pinging bass and the sort of smeared pads that bring real death.

Review: Tooney Lunes are back with more of their characterful underground cuts, this time from Looney Tunes's Marvin the Martian, an alien race character who brings the occult funk to these grooves. 'Track 1' is all slapping drum funk and crisp hits, then 'Track 2' spins out on molten acid gurgles and another snappy tech house groove. 'Track 3' is a brilliant mix of classic r&b samples with a chugging bassline and splashy electro-tech drums. Last of all is 'Track 4,' another begging mix of r&b vocals and dark garage tech, the squelchy acid lines appearing once more to make for something both soulful yet edgy.

It is a fat bassline that immediately gets your attention on 'Phantom Lady' - it brings real funk to the snappy drums and swirling cosmic pads. 'Lotusing' immediately flips the script with a mix of rough-assed broken beats and glistening pads full of optimism. Review: Belgian singer and producer Bolis Pupul releases his first solo debut album 'Letter to Yu' following his smash success with fellow DEEWEE artist Charlotte Adigery 'Topical Dancer', a satirical, yet hard-hitting, exploration of spirituality, racism and identity that the two experienced in Ghent as children of immigrant families. If you're a fan of the production of songs like 'Mantra', then this project is for you. Still keeping the witty elements from 'Topical Dancer' the LP, a reference to a great emperor of Chinese history, 'Completely Half' opens up with Pupuls hallmark 80s synthpop style, partnered with the typically Belgian cerebral approach to music and allusions to his mixed-race heritage. Review: Playedby's tasteful brand of tech house and minimal continues to offer up real treats with a new EP from Dick & Mutt called Rassafrassarickarackets, which is not an easy one to pronounce. It is the eponymous title track that kicks off in delightfully smooth fashion. The classic house drums set a nice deep groove which is then embellished with wispy sci-fi pads and lazy chords. It's a superb slow burner that oozes cool. 'Tricox' on the flip is a little more kinetic and punchy but again mixes up fragments of melody, vocal and squelchy bass into something that never stops moving and is bright in colour.

Review: Minimal production/DJ master Ricardo Villalobos enjoys a renown that lends him just about enough credo to release anything he likes whenever he likes and this latest pair of remixes of Paul Desenne's (in collaboration with Alonso Toro and Pedro Vasquez) 'Isiminaimanin' - the lead track from his gemlike Venezuelan gem of an album, Alzheimer - is a case in point. A furtive legend of the Venezuelan folk underground, Alzheimer, which was released back in 2001, expressed Desenne's talents and tastes, expansive outwards from his own Latin cello home-stretch and into further-afield wildernesses such as the Venezuelan cuatro (small guitar), Hawaiian bamboo clarinet, and electric cello - all instruments in constructing totemic, tribal, conceptual flights of fancy. It's this eclecticism on which Villalobos evidently feeds, with his two mixes expressing both fast and slow minimal-tech iterations of Desenne's mysticism.

Review: Mitch Wellings is the founder of Space Tours Records and The Sound Kitchen studios and he's been impressing us with his 12"s for a while so we're glad to hear an album from him. This new conceptual release says it was "created to honour the brave passengers on the first ever Space Tours flight." It's a cosmic trip made using "real interview footage" and has some very lovely artwork to help heighten the illusion. The music itself is futurities and melodic tech with wispy electro rhythms and celestial chord sequences. It's an expansive mind movie, a deeply immersive and escapist soundtrack that makes great use of the long-player format while also offering up plenty of great moments for the dance floor. A real triumph.

Review: Cough & Laugh might be an odd name for a label, but so too is the music it has thus far put out wonderfully unusual. Kai Kan's opening cut here 'Oversleep' is a glitchy and abstract minimal rhythm with scraping, scratchy sounds and scattered hits over a warped low end, busted bass blasts and plenty of malfunctioning machine sounds. 'Snore' is another freaky late-night sound track for narcotic after-parties that features samples of people snoring. Last of all is 'Dodoitsu,' a more elastic rhythm but one again peppered with paranoid sounds, whispers, hums and distant hits. Inventive stuff.

Review: Romanian label Playedby is dropping a couple of EPs in quick succession and this one from G76 is a leftfield one. It features the same track split over two sides of wax in two parts. 'Volume Figure' (part 1) is the sort of abstract work that you might get from Ricardo Villalobos - silvery and filtered vocals bring a sense of AI futurism to clicking beats and wispy sine waves. The rhythm grows in stature as wet claps and snares join the mix, and on the flip side, it turns into a more gritty and propulsive tech house cut for late-night afters.

Review: Santiago-based Drumma label is back in full swing with its first release in a couple of years. Before the pandemic they had releases from scene heavy hitters such as Luciano, (iO) Mulen, Barac and Livio & Roby. For this one they've chosen Miami-based up-and-comer Idana who presents the immersive and multi-layered minimal techno experience of 'Cantan Los Pajaros Modulares' featuring an array of atonal blips and bleeps underpinned by clipped and hypnotic polyrhythms. Over on the flip, the mesmerising energy continues on the wonky breakbeat-driven roller 'Telepatic'.

Review: Warm Sounds hits release number 15 with more of its signature house grooves and they come from a pairing who have often worked together before to great effect. That is John Swing feat David Soleil Mon and they offer up a trio of delightfully left-of-centre deep house and minimal cuts starting with 'Find Your Way' which deservedly takes up the whole of the a-side and is a sublime excursion. 'Gaia Planet' is a dusty, lo-fi and mysterious beatdown with chords full of suspense and 'From Within' closes down with more paddy kick drums and wispy synth details.

Review: New and exciting Los Angeles label YKW returns with a second release, this time from Montreal's Ohm Hourani who is well known in hardcore circles for his superb jazzy and minimal stylings. He offers one particularly standout track, 'Herbs Miles,' which mixes up a sample of Herbie Hancock discussing the legendary Miles Davis. His own live-recorded and processed trumpet layers in another soulful edge and makes it a brilliantly original jam. G76/Gojnea76 delivers a weird and wonky remix and then 'Down the Syncussion Hole' is another inventive and rather madcap sound from this studio wizard.
