Review: We love nothing more than house music direct from the Windy City and that's what Vick Lavender's Sophisticado Recordings has got for us here. Angel-A is actually a native of Detroit currently living in Chicago and influenced by everything from jazz to gospel. She brings that to the fore here on the 'Master Fusion' single which is as soulful, lush and heartwarming as house can be. Her voice takes on many different forms from wordless coos to expressive declarations of love via diva wails. Lavender himself serves up a mix, while Albert Menendez offers both a piano-laced vocal mix and a broken beat, jazz-licked and synth-heavy instrumental which does still have the standout original vocal.

Elsewhere, Marko Nastic, Shinedoe, Zombie Nation and NUDE all deliver versions which pay tribute to the legacy of one of the most important club tracks of all time.

Review: It's coming home, it's coming home - house music is coming home! A second instalment of the Groove Access: series Chicago Is Home offers us five fresh tracks from the windy city landing in a glorious cavalcade of razor edged snares and hypnotic jack house. Ed Nine & Kid Enigma's 'Bandleaders' opens side one in spectacular fashion with spoken mantras lying deep in the mix, distinctive phasing arpeggios, poking keyboard riffs and ringing cymbals. JSquare's 'Get Wicked' kicks with even more power, tribal rhythms bouncing of bleepy melodies, before 'Move' by Geto Mark rounds off the side with the strutting, beautifully brutal 'Move', a proper 3AM peak time pleaser. Steve Noah's 'The Hater' opens side two, a wily acid line worming its way across a raw, stripped down backing before exploding into serious gnarliness when you least expect it. AFTR's 'Undercover' rounds things off with another knuckle duster of a tune, leaving no doubt that Chicago is still the place to be when it comes to house.

Review: Chicago house mainstay Glenn Underground is as good at crafting neat edits of the classics as he is serving up his own superb original house compositions. It is the former which he does here on his own label and first up on the A-side he adds his signature smooth grooves to a track but the late, great funk master Amp Fiddler. The B-side begins with his Retro mix of beatmaker extraordinaire Mos Def which has loose-limbed drums and soulful pads that reach to the heavens, then he looks to acid jazz innovators Incognito and their 'I Can See The Future' and flips it into a nice funky and drawn out house groove for vibrant dance floor fun.

Review: Aaron Andrew's Chubby label doesn't rush things. Since launching in 2018 and now only just hitting its sixth release though the music sure is worth the wait and is proof that quality will always win over quantity. Leonid's twin brother, Al Smith opens up with the cuddly and cosmic depths of 'Drama Room' before getting more dark and unsettling with his twisted synth modulations on 'Full Of Music', which then becomes a gorgeous downtempo cut with star-gazing pads and splashy hits within the Specter remix. Dan Piu picks up the pace for some delightfully warm deep house dynamics on 'Days Gone' and 'Snows Of Solaris'. Last of all is the more scuffed up, heads down deep house murk of Rai Scott's remix of Dan's intro tune, 'Day's Gone'.

The self-declared House Gangster recently impressed on Dam Swindle's Heist Recordings label and now makes this way to the always-assured Toy Toncis outlet. Review: Marcellus Pittman and James Curd go head-to-head on this new collaborative split, hearing two tracks from the Chi-troit musicians and their ability to fuse each other's approaches to minimal house. 'Shafty Riptide' has in it the sonic equivalent of lapping waves; 'chained chords inhale and exhale against the beats, while farty arps bring up the bottom end. 'Corners' takes on a jazzier and folktronickier mood, with odd timings urging on a much more subdued soundscape.

Review: Well here's something no one expected from the annals of house music history. Back in 2000 a chance link up took place when Steve Bug invited the legendary Chicago producer Spencer Kincy, aka Gemini, to his studio in Berlin. Two tracks were laid down, and now after all these years they're finally seeing the light of day as Chiwax got the blessing from all relevant parties to press them up for our grooving pleasure. They're crisp, unfussy tracks which are perhaps less wild than a lot of Gemini-related projects, which no doubts speaks to Bug's well-known style, but there's a whole lot of vibe in these cuts whichever way you look at them.

Review: There's much to admire on this first collaborative EP from Rotterdam dwellers Jamie 3:26 and Danou P, not least epic A-side workout 'Roy Layers', a warming, drowsy and musically expansive deep house tribute to Roy Ayers. A genuine epic that stretches out for 13 magical minutes, the track boasts a variety of spacey, jazz-funk style synth solos and expressive vibraphone workouts rising above an organic, laidback deep house groove. Over on the reverse, 'Bushman B' sees them pepper a tougher, locked-in and fiendishly sub-heavy house beat with excitement and energy-packed Hammond riffs, while 'Rug Burn' is a sweat-soaked, disco-sampling beast packed to the rafters with gospel organs and thumping kick-drums.

Review: The French deep house label D3 Elements is now a decade old and to mark the occasion it has assembled a superb three part EP series featuring plenty of talents both new and old. The second EP kick off with some Japanese stylings from Koizumi Yukiko and his piano laced bongo workout '526'. Taelue sets off on a deep and heavy bassline pulse that will make floors march and Nemanja Krstic's 'Aquae Sulis' brings some jazzy chord work and bubbling funk bass for a nice heartfelt vibe. Review: He is just about to drop his second conceptual album with Wide Awake but before that Felipe Gordon offers up a new three-track EP on Toucan Sounds. 'The Warehouse Beast' is a mid tempo house cut with deep drums and plenty of focus on the pixelated chords that churn up top over tighter stabs that keep things moving. 'It's Over (You Can Drive My Car)' is another unhurried cut with smeared synth warmth and hiccuping hits. Review: First released digitally last year, 'We Work Best' sees sometime Ron Trent protege Anthony Nicholson join forces with soul singer Jadeine Veda for some suitably grown-up, musically expansive deep house thrills. The two club-focused remixes come from Nicholson under his Miquifaye pseudonym - vocal and instrumental takes full of layered, Latin-influenced percussion, locked-in deep house beats, glassy-eyed chords, immersive pads and Spanish guitar flourishes. Of those two mixes, it's the A-side version that really impresses, thanks in no small part to Veda's fragile, emotive and intimate lead vocals. The EP's other mix, the 'Veda Vocal Reprise', is a largely beat-free affair marked out by chopped and layered vocal snippets, sparkling ambient chords and warming bass.

Review: The most sought-after release from the entire Sounds catalogue, Gemini and Unit T's 1995 release, 'Sideburns', finally gets a much-needed reissue. A1 track, 'Trip', is a prime example of deep house if there ever was one. An infectious, encircling melody meets the deep groove of the bassline to create a finished product that is in equal measure sun-soaked and cosmic. 'B Trip', the A2 track, is a gloriously shifted, off-beat reimagining of A1, pummeling percussion reverberates across the track, left alone to enjoy moments where everything is stripped back, before the body of the track returns. Review: Boo Williams is in good company appearing here on Sushitech's sub label Pariter where he joins the illustrious likes of Delano Smith and Norm Talley in its ranks. You wait for a Boo Williams record and then, of course, two come along, 'Day Rise' being accompanied by the simultaneously released 'Night Fall', each with their own corresponding vibe. 'Day Rise' is definitely more upbeat of the two but it's a subtle distinction - it's certainly not full of 4AM bangers designed to keep you awake until the busses start running again. 'Talley Up' is a very straight forward affair, circling around a two note synth riff and gradually building percussion. 'The Take Over' is similarly spritely, another builder with crashing cymbals, jazzy chords and drum machine tumbles steadily building an insurmountable wall of funkiness. Breezy, bumping closer 'Teleport' completes the set, meaning three ultra-handy, raw but sophisticated tunes that house and techno DJs alike will find slipping into their sets with a natural ease.

Review: Way back in 1993, when his career was still in its infancy, Chicago great Roy Davis Jr donned an alternative alias, The Believers, and delivered a 12" on Strictly Rhythm: 'Who Dares To Believe In Me?' It was something of a club smash, with Ministry of Sound issuing it in the UK a year later with a swathe of new mixes. This Groovin' Records reissue boasts a trio of mixes from the original U.S 12". On the A-side you'll find the original mix, a warm, spine-tingling slab of piano-rich New York style house topped off by snaking, delay-laden saxophone lines and an inspirational spoken word vocal courtesy of Davis. Over on the reverse, Davis' own 'Just Living High Mix' - a breezier, jazzier and more colourful affair - is followed by Mind Readers' tougher, chunkier and heavier revision, which is in effect a proper dancefloor dub.

Review: Pietro 'Peter' Macaluso has been around for some time, operating between Berlin and his native Sicily, though remarkably this is the first time his productions have been showcased on vinyl. It comes via Balance Recordings, with boss man Chez Damier acting as 'executive producer'. There's much to admire across the EP, from the suspenseful, alien electronics and slow-build groove of deep Afro-tech bubbler 'Low Pressure (Afro-Acid Mix)', and the light-touch deep house hypnotism of 'Feel Me (Deep Mix)', where DJ Ronaldo-esque synth string sounds catch the ear, to the ultra-deep techno haziness of 'Cantico (Synth Wave Mix)' and the tough, bleeping throb of 'Take It Off (Techno Mix)'.

Review: Despite a sizable, high-quality discography that stretches back to 1994, Boo Williams has never been as hyped or celebrated as many of his Chicago deep house peers. Perhaps it's time we gave him some love because the Natural Service EP - his first solo 12" on Chiwax since 2014 - is undeniably excellent. Check first opener 'Ambushed', where twinkling electronics and sumptuous pads ride jackin' drums and a brilliant bassline, before turning your attention to 'Echoes of the Dance', an acid-flecked journey through dreamy, loved-up deep house that's as picturesque as they come. Flipside 'Zone' is even more hypnotic and trance-inducing, sitting somewhere between classic deep house and the techier end of Omar-S's output.

Review: Given that he has been operative on the Chicago house scene since its earliest days at the dawn of the 1980s, it's perhaps unsurprising that deep house legend Boo Williams' latest EP pays tribute to the city that he calls home. Jamiel Patton lends his spoken word vocals to opener 'Chicago The Place To Be', a hybrid deep house/Afro-house affair piled high with musical details (think short, tight acid lines, woozy electric piano lines, spacey synths and so on), and companion track 'Chicago The Place', an effects-laden, early morning alternate take that's effectively a dub mix of that track. Elsewhere, 'One Hour' is a sparkling, melodically impressive deep house workout with added bleeps, while 'The Same Again' is a locked-in-but-bouncy workout rich in fuzzy synth stabs, sweaty drum machine fills and held-note chords.

Review: Classic deep house movements from Stefan Braatz, Virgo Four and Rheji Burrell, coming through with the maximized, wally acid heat. 'Everyman Jack' on the A-side orders punters to shake, albeit whoever recorded the vocal sample is clearly so confident of their floor-command that they barely needed to do more than whisper. Burrell helms up two new ones on the B, meanwhile, with 'XTC' remaining soulful, autotuned and piano-phasey, and 'Gimme Ya Luv' leaning towards low-end-theoretic hip-house.

Review: It's taken a while, but finally Chiwax has repressed their 2014 reissue of Ron Trent's brilliant 1992 EP 'Love Affair', which on its initial release was officially the Chicagoan's follow-up to his peerless debut, 'Altered States'. All six mixes from the original 12" are present in remastered form. Four of these come from Trent himself: the wonderfully warming, sparkling and starry 'Ron Soulful Mix' (which some would argue provided a blueprint for his later work with Chez Damier), the stripped-back and sub-heavy 'Bass Shaker Mix', the riff-driven joyousness of the 'Underground Mix' and the sleazy, sub-heavy and alien-sounding 'Beatnik Mix'. The remaining mixes are by 'executive producer' Braxton Holmes: the dense, breathless and sweaty '326 Mix' and the classic Chicago deepness of the 'Smooth Mix'.

Review: In the past 15 years, Yore has established itself as one of the most celebrated labels in terms of consistency, quality and success. The label is brimming with talented artists doing their own take on the Detroit sound. The most recent is a collaboration between Elbert Philips and Andre Espeut called 'Tears' where it also gets some remix treatment to fill up Yore #49. The 'Acid Dub' remix gets granular with the groove. Deep and dubby, just how we like it, as is the piano towards the ending too. From there, you have other great versions. The 'Sinsay Reprise' highlights the vocal sample a bit more but has great building potential for any house DJ. The 'Loving Tribute Instrumental' is the straightest house approached version where the piano really takes center stage. Things close out with a broken beat version via the 'Andrew Emil Dreamix', meaning there's plenty to choose from. Depending on your style, know that this can bridge styles in any set giving it a versatility that is unmatched.

Review: The deep and soulful house label based in Sweden, Cataleya Music, is a new label that is coming out blazing. Chicago's own Vick Lavender's 'No One's Going To Love You' offers us three strong mixes on one late night 12". The Instrumental keeps things on the up and up while having an overarching disco feeling to it that we just can't get enough of and just the right amount of funk, house and soul. The Coflo balances a bit of Latin feel but also is heavy on the instrumental showcasing doing the damage. Lastly, the dub version is an alternate ride that focuses more on the piano and groove and subtracts the vocals. Whichever one you go with; it should reign supreme on the turntables.

Review: American Anthony Nicholson is one of the underground's most noxiously outspoken characters, especially during his days with the Dope Jams record store where he would right diss notes on 12"s and LPs he didn't like. Thankfully his own work is up to scratch and now the veteran becomes part of the Yoruba family. 'Nucleus Scene1' is his contribution - a signature deep house cut laced with real soul, jazzy chords and life-affirming melodies in a vibrant arrangement. The Yoruba Soul Mix gets even more soulful and mind-expanding with its funky guitar riffs and then Cee ElAssaad brings the Afro house vibes with some extra piano. Great stuff.

Review: Brooklyn label Toucan Sounds deals in authentic US house music from some of the best in the game. A case in point is this new EP from Brandon Markell Holmes which features plenty of heavyweight names. First up is a rare and brilliant mix from Boompty king Derrick Carter who brings super skip and depth to his take on Rogue Vogue's 'Someone Else.' There is glorious percussion on Musclecars' 'Don't Go' that peppers a deep grove with dynamic movement as impossibly warm and jazz chords bring the soul. A collab with former Dope Jams man Anthony Nicholson on 'Found' is another soul-stirring gem and last of all Dee Digs and Joey Mercedes send further shivers down your spine with their closing cut.

Review: Forbidden Dance Records sure does know how to signup the big boys with previous EPs from Patrice Scott and Dego making a fine impression. Next up is another house don, this time from Chicago: Specter can really go wild with his rhythms and raw textures as shown on EPs for Theo Parrish's label, but here he starts off with something soulful, dusty round the edges and deep. 'Putazo' then finds him embracing the occult with edgy and glassy synth lines zipping about more turbulent groves. 'Run The Course' is a grinding and mechanical groove of the sort he does so well, then 'Humble Pie' is all fizzing lo-fi synths and scuzzy drums patterns.

Review: Chicago house don Boo Williams is one of those artists who has a distinctive sound. It's the way his kicks kick with real force but also infectious funk. He's turned out a steady steam of such sounds for decades and continues to find freshness in his own forms. This new 12" on Trax Research is yet another case in point - well-crafted cuts designed to liven up any dancefloor. Review: Scissor & Thread's fascination with the deeper end of the spectrum continues with another voyage into the murky and heady waters of house music's most cerebral sounds here with a new album, Ghosts, from Black Light Smoke. The opening cut itself is coated in a late-night mystery, a descending fog of humidity that dulls all sensations but the most intimate. Raw perc and whistles arrive to awaken the grooves of '727 Anthem (House Is Back)' while the dusty drums and lo-fi aesthetics continue on 'Hearts Not Broken" (feat Leah Lazonick), with a tender and seductive whisper at its core. Things remain warm and cuddly though out ensuing highlights like 'Out From Within'.

Review: DJ Sneak is about as house music as it gets. The Puerto-Rico born, US-based DJ and producer is a second wave pioneer whose own sound is raw and loopy. He calls himself a house gangster and now has titled his latest EP on Frappe, 'Chicago House', so you know what you're going to get with it. Despite his veteran status, Sneak is in fine form here with the pleasing melodic loops and upward energy of the opener, the more jazzy chords and deeper vibes of 'I Need You complete with aching vocal sample, then there is a more chunky and UK fury feel to the kicks of 'When You Dance.' Last of all is 'A Little Acid' with a 303 spraying around over nice textured drums. Useful stuff for sure.
