The DS-1 Distortion is a true icon in the world of guitar effects. Genre-Defining Distortion

Before the DS-1, most distortion pedals produced harsh, buzzy tones and muddy sound at high gain settings. In 1978, BOSS engineers changed all that by developing a unique distortion circuit for the DS-1 that produces tight, hard-edged gain with rich harmonics while retaining the unique characteristics of different guitars and playing techniques. Hard rock, metal, and punk styles began to flourish in the '70s and '80s, and the DS-1's tone had a defining influence on these genres. That trend has endured through multiple generations, and players around the world continue to seek out the classic DS-1 sound.

Gain from Mild to Heavy

From its modest three-knob interface, many different sound colours can be coaxed from the DS-1. Its pioneering two-stage circuit incorporates both transistor and op-amp gain stages. This approach is critical to the DS-1's characteristic low-frequency fullness, which is loved by guitarists that play heavy music genres. The distortion knob offers an extremely wide range, from a mild boost for driving amps and pedals to full-throttle gain for monster rock riffs.

Powerful Tone Shaping

Unlike typical tone controls that only cut highs, the DS-1's tone circuit features an innovative design that offers far more range. Turning the knob clockwise increases highs and decreases lows, while going counter-clockwise has the opposite effect. This lets you dial in everything from tight, cutting rhythm sounds to smooth, fat lead voices. The tone control is particularly effective for maintaining low-end definition when using the DS-1 as a booster with vintage-style amps, which often sound muddy when driven with other distortion pedals.

Notes: NANOPATCH M is a tiny and incredibly versatile patch bay, with mini jacks sockets on both the rear and the top panel. It is ideal for connecting to instruments and a mixer when used in conjunction with NANOPATCH X.

It also works with CV, so can be used as a breakout box for semi-modular synths with outputs in hard-to-reach places (e.g. Moog Grandmother) and devices that output CV over TRS sockets (e.g. MPC ONE).

Mini jack sockets on the back panel makes it easy to connect to eurorack systems and small instruments such as Korg Volcas.

3.5 mm to 6.35 mm cables can be used when connecting to equipment with 1/4" sockets.

Using standard eurorack cables, easily patch signals from a NANOPATCH M through effects connected to a NANOPATCH X (and back again).

How It Works

Rear sockets labelled 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8 can be used for either mono or stereo signals. For example, if a TRS cable is plugged into rear socket 1/2, the left and right channels will break out to sockets 1 and 2 on the top panel. If another cable is plugged into rear socket 2, rear sockets 1 and 2 will correspond to sockets 1 and 2 on the top panel, both in mono.

Normalling

Channels 1-4 can be full-normalled to channels 5-8 using DIP switches located on the side of the NANOPATCH M.

This allows a signal to pass through from instrument to mixer without the need for any patching. When a patch cable is inserted into either socket of a normalled pair, the connection is broken, allowing for custom routing of the signal.

Typical Setup

A typical setup would be to have four instruments connected to channels 1-4 and four mixer channels connected to channels 5-8.

Connections to the mixer could either be made with four separate mono cables (utilizing the sockets on the side) or with two insert cables (as in the diagram).

Notes: NANOPATCH X is a tiny patch bay with the primary function of connecting to guitar pedals and other effects processors. It can be used in conjunction with NANOPATCH M or standalone, for a variety of purposes.

How It Works

Each 1/4" TRS socket on the back corresponds to two mono TS mini jacks on the top panel.

By using insert cables (TRS to dual TS), connect up to four pedals to a single NANOPATCH X.

The inputs and outputs of the pedals are then easily accessible via the top panel, using standard eurorack or TRS cables.

Patching can be done directly from instrument to mixer or via a NANOPATCH M.

Pico BBD is surprisingly great sounding (we were surprised ourselves), full analogue 4092 stage bucket brigade delay module; the smallest BBD in Eurorack. Besides nice and clean flanger and delay effects, at full CW settings of TIME and feedback knobs it can produce extreme sonic artefacts. Tweak knobs and enjoy!

Notes: 3xMIA is a 6-channel attenuverting mixer/offset/scale/polarizer.

3 blocks of 2-channel attenuverting mixers, using dual concentric pots. Each channel can be switched to mix with the subsequent channel, allowing for 2-2-2, 4-2, 6 mix configurations.

With nothing plugged into an input, an offset is normalled to that channel. The inner knobs control the A inputs, while the outer knobs control the B inputs.

Notes: The Voltage Controlled Amplifier or "VCA" is one of the most essential and useful building blocks in a synthesis patch. The DUAL VCA 1U packs two high quality, DC coupled, linear VCAs into a very compact 1U package.

The two VCAs can be used completely independently or in tandem via the handy signal normalling. The DC coupling means that the VCA can be used for the amplitude control of both control voltages (CV) and audio signals.

Some application/use examples:

- Dual, independent VCA for dynamic level control of two different audio or cv sources
- Stereo VCA (use the CV normalling where CV A normals to CV B) for processing stereo sources or CV pairs.
- CV/Audio summing (when Out A is not patched, it normals to sum with OUT B, CV A and B control the independent levels)
- Voltage/signal doubling (use input A only and the doubled voltage will appear at OUT B when a CV of +5V applied to CV A)

Notes: Mixup is a versatile, expandable audio mixer for Eurorack format. It has eight inputs (6 on the front panel) and two outputs. Inputs 1 and 2 are single-channel mono inputs, each with its own mute switch and level control; Input 3 is a dual-channel stereo input with a shared mute and level control; and input 4 is an auxiliary unity-gain, non-mutable stereo input.

Using bus connectors on the back panel, you can chain multiple Mixups together in series, giving you the ability to mix together even more inputs, or to create sub-mixes for routing around larger systems.

Because Mixup is designed specifically for audio (and not for CV mixing), it uses AC-coupled circuitry (which reduces the potential for 'pops' when muting and unmuting audio), and it uses audio-grade, logarithmic attenuators for a smooth, even response across the entire volume range.
