Ennio Morricone's legacy is well known across the world, or at least the world of cinephiles. The legendary film composer is responsible or no less than 400 movie and TV scores (in fact, he's made a few more), with a 100-strong oeuvre of classical compositions to add to that storied back catalogue. Sadly lost last year at the age of 91- unrelated to coronavirus - much of his work is now rightfully returning to the release schedule.
Of course, none of his output can match the music he created to accompany Spaghetti Westerns - Italian made cowboy movies from directors such as another late-great, Sergio Leone, including The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and A Fistful of Dollars. 134 of the finest arrangements from that part of his life are included on this mammoth collector's item, which proves you don't really need visuals to be transported to the wild frontier towns of yesterday.

Review: The score for 1989's Casualties of War - a Vietnam War flick starring Michael J Fox and Sean Penn - is not one of Ennio Morricone's better-known soundtracks. Even so, it's still a masterful work, as this reissue proves. In typical Morricone fashion, there are moments of poignant reflection (all sweeping strings, twittering flutes and melancholic motifs), tension-filled themes, subtle looks towards to the composer's spaghetti western-era work, and driving, forceful and grandiose compositions where you can almost smell the napalm. In keeping with the film's setting, there are occasional nods towards traditional Vietnamese music, though these tend to provide aural colour amongst the cinematic orchestration and lilting strings.

Review: 1980's Un sacco bello translates as Fun Is Beautiful and is an Italian comedy movie that was produced by Sergio Leon and marked the debut for director Calro Verdone, who was also the head actor and screenwriter. The soundtrack is one of the very many by legendary composer Ennio Morricone and this was his first collaboration with Verdone. He wrote pieces for each of the main scenes in the movie with the opening being a funky rhythm workout before more nostalgic, dreamy and romantic pieces follow later, all performed by an orchestra and additional musicians.

These were themes not necessarily directly connected with his films' synopses, but which were nonetheless played in disco clubs, on jukeboxes, turntables and on the radio. Review: Space disco might be a recognisable or at least widely acceptable genre term, but its long lost twin 'space jazz' is on the sidelines, relegated to nicher corners of musical history. Thankfully, its memory has been conserved thanks to the late great composer Ennio Morricone occupying one of those corners. 'Space: 1999' was British TV's answer to Kubrick - concerning a fictional account of what would happen if the moon were knocked out of orbit - and Morricone's soundtrack for the Italian theatrical version here forms a veritable part the Italian OST canon. Incredible cacophonous clang-jazz, modular workouts and tom-heavy unidentified flying drums make up this fast but lonesome paean for the cosmos.

This volume is focussed on his work with Italian directors from the late 1960s up to the 1980s and the music was made for dark films and the occasional horror. This is the Italian's milieu, though, where he feels most at home and gets his best results. This limited pressing on translucent red vinyl includes a four page insert with liner notes written by Claudio Fuiano and plenty of eerie tracks that will have you looking over your shoulder.

Review: There is a glut of Ennio Morricone soundtracks being released at the moment and each one needs to be heard. Following the likes of Cosa Avete Fatto A Solange? and Theme V: Passion comes Istruttoria E Chiusa: Dimentichi from this renowned composer. The film was a 1971 Italian crime drama directed by Damiano Damiani and for it Morricone crafted an obscure score to the thriller which went on to be globally admired by fans and critics alike. A couple of tunes here were not used in the final film having been recorded in the original session and they are the B2 and B3, which both need hearing.
