Review: An iconic soundtrack to a classic blaxploitation flick, JJ Johnson and Martha Reeves & The Sweet Things turned a collective head when they simultaneously composed their core themes for Willie Dynamite, directed by obscure director Gilbert Moses. This ineluctable screen treat stars Roscoe Orman and Diana Sands in a quintessential portrayal of early '70s New York pimping, with the central character's foibles giving rise to a latent conscience when he comes into contact with a young social worker. As is often the case with the blaxploitation genre, Willie Dynamite begins with the lead character cruising down the streets of New York in some kind of fancy car, and 'tracked by the central theme: the theme of Reeves' 'Willie D' is clear as day, lyrically portraying D's hustle as 'magic', "never treating two girls the same", "it's no different from any other industry". 'Keep On Movin' On' contrasts this with a note of modesty, signaling the movie's inevitable tonal shift; nor should you miss the B-side instrumentals 'Willie Chase' and 'Parade Strut'.

Review: Hans Zimmer is unquestionably one of the greatest composers of modern times. More specifically, he's perhaps the greatest living film composer, having scored more movies than we could ever hope to list here. Recent credits including the much-hyped and long-anticipated Dune redo, and Denis Villeneuve's rightly celebrated sci-fi epic, Blade Runner 2049.

As you guessed from this web page, The Dark Knight is another title he put his name to, all the way back in 2008. Christopher Nolan's second Batman instalment, arguably the finest in the history of the franchise, really needed something rooted in menacing, unsettling atmospherics, with rousing moments capable of restoring hope even against some near-impossible odds. He did just that, as this evocative powerhouse of a classical album proves. Not exactly easy listening, prepare to be moved in more ways than one.

Don't pass on this one, as it's not just any old soundtrack; underwater worlds and vaporeal explosions make up its more unusual sonics.

Review: Jan Jelinek is never one to present music without an idea behind it. On SEASCAPE - polyptych, he collaborated with Canadian visual artist Clive Holden to create an audio-visual software which, on the surface, feels like the disorientation of being immersed in or moved about by a sizeable body of water. It's subtle and shimmering, threaded with the cosy hum and micro sonic style which Jelinek has made his own, but it of course develops a new resonance when you learn all the sound has been triggered by converting ranting speeches from Captain Ahab in John Huston's 1956 adaptation of Moby Dick. Just very occasionally actual speech noises sneak through, but primarily this is a fragmented, subliminal experience which will satisfy the expectations of Jelinek's fanbase - and indeed anyone who appreciates elegant, minimalist experimentation.

Review: New Jersey-based rapper Topaz Jones presents a high-octane sophomore LP, Don't Go Tellin' Your Momma, adding to the vogue of hip-hop albums channelling a nostalgic, family-reminiscent, coming-of-age aesthetic. In contrast to his 2016 debut Arcade, this album is crisper in production, spans a wider stylistic gamut, and hears the rapper tap into his upbringing in Montclair, NJ, with its lyrics building off a screenplay for an audiovisual project about his childhood. Review: Many artists have tried their hand at rescoring the original soundtrack to the first sci-fi film ever, Metropolis. It debuted all the way back in 1927 in the era when films still had live orchestras - the film premiered with an accompaniment by composer Gottfried Huppertz - but its ultimate fate as a silent film have since led many artists from Giorgio Moroder to Dieter Moebius to Jeff Mills try their hand. Now comes a more contemporary take from Joakim, who conveys the dark descent into the film's futuristic underbelly with many-an industrial clank, atmospheric moan and metallic technoid scrape.
