Treat Me Right (4:39)
Mo Ghetto Bluez (feat Maurice Brown) (5:07)
Review: Linda Muriel is an acclaimed lead vocalist best known for her work with Acid Jazz and Talking Loud acts like The Brand New Heavies, Incognito, Galliano, and JQT. For this one she has joined forces Fitzroy Facey, director of The Soul Survivors Magazine, to craft a fusion of old and new funk and soul sounds. Linda's distinctive voice shines in the infectious track 'Treat Me Right' who has wowed audiences in live performances and featured on the Luxury Soul Weekend 2024 box set. It soared to the top of the UK Soul Breakers Chart on December 31, 2023 and this must cop tune has the instrumental flip side 'Mo Ghetto Bluez' with Maurice Brown, which is perfect for those who appreciate a blend of old-school with a touch of new cool.

Review: Marking the 15th anniversary of Amy Winehouse's live performance at Glastonbury in 2007, the full set recording is now available on vinyl to purchase. Greatest hits in the late Camden-native's catalogue played live with a 6 piece band, 16 classics like 'Tears dry on their own' and 'Back to black' from her 2 albums are pressed on this double LP. The latter performance being watched on YouTube almost 8 million times, the raw vocals are incredible and a reminder of what made Amy Winehouse the legend that she is. This record is an indisputable must-have for collectors this year.

Be Free (Dimitri From Paris remix - extended version) (7:21)
Be Free (Dimitri From Paris remix - dubstrumental) (7:28)
Review: Dimitri From Paris has previously reworked classic Ten City cuts - most notably 'That's The Way Love Is' - so it's fitting that he's been given the chance to rework one of the legendary house outfit's most recent tunes, 2021 revivalist disco gem 'Be Free'. His extended A-side remix is terrific: a hybrid jazz-funk/disco/boogie-soul gem that builds brilliantly via layered acapella and groove-focused sections before introducing the vocals and reaching for the lasers. Over on the flip, the French veteran delivers a 'Dubstrumental' take that brilliantly showcases different aspects of the track's superb, organic instrumentation whilst keeping both eyes firmly on the dancefloor. A contemporary disco classic in waiting!

Review: 45 Loves is a label based in Condom, France that specialises in very limited DJ tools on vinyl 7'. Its next release comes from Jerome Potin aka Moar; producer, remixer, DJ and A&R at the Trad Vibe label from Nantes, who serves up some low-slung grooves on the Funky Party two-tracker. On side A, you've got the late-night boogie-down vibe of 'J', and the long hot sexy summer nights continue over on the flip with the funked-up vocal disco house heater 'JJ'.

As always she mixes up elements of jazz funk, city pop, disco and more next to swooning instrumentals while her delicate voice soars. Review: Brit-funk group Cloud made a big impact back in the 80s. They were part of an exciting and emerging scene that fused funk, soul, jazz and more and their catalogue continues to get plenty of attention even now, decades on. Backatcha last served up their Visions EP back in February and now they look to their This Is Your Woman 12" which opens with the title track complete with its brilliant female vocals and low-key funky disco beats. There is also the high-speed and super cool grooves of 'I'll Never Give You Up' which fans of Freez will love, then a couple of dubs and instrumentals on the flip.

Review: The Summits are a beloved fixture on the Soul Direction label and have plenty of fans in the wider soul collecting community. As a result they are now familiar to many and their track 'Window Shopping' emerged from an almost-lost master tape. It has previously been available only in digital format. on the flip, meanwhile, Phillips traverses diverse musical territories spanning from feel-good disco to funky fusion and modern soul. Fact fans will appreciate knowing that 'To Make You Happy" was originally titled 'Just to Make You happy' and now gets a rerelease that will surely give some light back to the music as well as the man. These two superb tracks have seemingly been missed by so many collectors over the years, but also have become more elusive in recent times. Living Inside Your Love (6:12)
Review: Two Arista classics from 79/78 respectively, the cult (not to mention heavily sampled) charms of Pittsburgh soul queen Hyman are presented immaculately right here on this heavyweight vinyl double-A. "You Know How To Love Me", taken from the 79 album of the same name, is a straight up disco stomper that should be recognisable to all with its distinctive horn fill and rousing backing vocals while "Living Inside Your Love" (from her 78 album Somewhere In My Lifetime) is a slinkier, sultry affair with some sizzling scat vocal flare and harmonies that will have you weak at the knees. It's all love.

Good Thing (3:04)
Review: James Mason's 'Rhythm of Life' - one of the long overlooked but now celebrated musician's most popular cuts - has never appeared on a seven-inch single before, in part because its' six-minute length made it more suitable for 12" singles and LPs (it first appeared as the title track of Mason's 1977 debut album). Dynamite Cuts have decided to address this by preparing their own (fully licensed) seven-inch edit, which successfully chops down the high-octane, spiritually inspired jazz-funk gem without losing any of its energy or soul. This time round it comes backed by another classic cut from the Rhythm of Life LP, the more laidback, spacey synth solo-sporting jazz-funk warmth of 'Good Thing'.

Rule Of Mind (5:14)
Review: Dynamite Cuts is one of the most apply named labels of them all. Once again here it brings the serious funk heat on a tidy 7" from The 9th Creation. Both of these super sexy killers are taken from the mega rare Bubble Gum album and it's not hard to see why it has become such a highly sought after record. The title tune is only just over two minute long but has steamy spoken word vocals with Moog funk bass. 'Rule Of Mind' is longer at over five minutes, and the way the keys shimmy into your affections and the lead sax brings the lustre is second to none. What an EP.

Review: Since it was first reissued a few years ago, Steve Monite's Only You album has gone from being a stupidly rare Nigerian boogie "holy grail", to an easy-to-access "must have" for anyone with even a passing interest in African disco and electrofunk. If you've yet to acquire a copy, we'd recommend picking up a copy of this officially licensed Soundway repress. It contains two different takes on the now anthemic 'Only You' - an infectious Lagos boogie delight - plus the pleasingly dubbed-out, piano-heavy electrofunk gem 'Things Fall Apart (Disco Jam)' (the original mix is also included at the end of side B), the slick and sweet 'Welcome My Love' and the more downtempo 'I Had a Dream'.

Review: Carmy Love is mainstay of the Big AC Records label by now with the likes of 'Rebel', 'Together Again' and 'Thinkin Bout You' all establishing her sound. Here she embodies a love of, or certainly respect for, Southern Soul here with a bog and bold stomper that has brassy horns and loose tambourines backing a lung busting vocal that is powerful and emotive. It's a track that has an authentic old school sound but with modern production heft. Flip it over and you'll find the equally magical 'Together Again' which is a slower sound that sinks in deeper and with more pain.

The Georgia resident started singing in the 1960s, at first replacing Otis Redding in Johnny Jenkins & The Pinetoppers after Redding left. His first recording came in 1970 after years spent gigging hard and then he carried on well into the 80s making great tunes. It is that decade which is represented here with some solo tunes and some alongside local group Side Show. She are unreleased, some have previously been on 45 pm, all are gold.

Review: The Essence Of Life is very much listening to the sort of sublime soul music that is always offered up by the Epsilon label if you ask us. This latest limited edition 45rpm features their 'You're An Angel' which is one of the many tunes that made the group such favourites back in the seventies. They formed in Charlotte North Carolina at Johnson C Smith University and are made up of a pair of basketball players who were allegedly overheard singing in the shower and asked if they wanted to form a group. They went on to perform with plenty of stars of the day and as you can hear from this 7" their falsettos are to die for.

It has previously been released on a 7" entitled 'Edits' by Stefan Trischler aka Trishes back in 2010 but with a different B-side. Here it comes on TLM with a 1773 remix on the flip. The original is a hard-ass funk cut with raw and tough drums and splintered hi-hats all topped off with the aching and soulful vocal sample and some distant lavish strings. The tracklist takes in new school names as well as now well known stars of the soul world and they all have their own distinctive personalities. Some go for sombre blue-eyed styles, others more raw and old school. Our picks: El Michels Affair with their unique jazz influences on "Tearz" and Brainstory's "Dead End" which is a gorgeous late night lullaby for lovers. There's lots to love here, so big up Big Crown for three years of goodness.

Review: Willie Hutch was just 25 years old when he recorded his debut album, Soul Portrait. While he would go on to greater commercial success later in his career, Hutch's first stab at soul success sold relatively poorly on its initial release. Ever since, the album has been in demand with collectors, so this licensed reissue is more than welcome. Sitting somewhere between the horn-heavy soul of Stax, punchy '60s funk and the Motor City stomp of Motown, the 11 featured songs put Hutch's evocative, passionate vocals and heart-felt lyrics at the centre of the action. The result is a classic soul album that has more than stood the test of time.

Review: It was France's l'Arome Productions that had first reissued this spectacular selection of Ethiopian soul and funk back in 2009 but, since then, this particular compilation has turned into something of a cult-classic within the digging world, and it has been repressed by Heavenly Sweetness on three different occasions. None of this is in the least bit surprising given just how special the sounds on here truly are, and if you're a fan of Mulatu then this will hit the spot big time! Moreover, tunes by the likes of Samuel Belay, Mahmoud Ahmed - who has appeared on Mississippi's reissue schedule - and Girma Beyene go much further than the usual dosage of far-out funk, leading us to a tense, dimly lit scenario that is both hypnotic and totally different from anything else. Highly recommended, a timeless slice of history.

Review: With a sound that was honed in Las Vegas, there's a distinct showbiz flavour to west coast funk band Breakaway. Disbanded in 1980, this is the band's long-lost debut LP, and it's full of surprises and stunning moments of mesmerising production. For example; "My Symphony" comes on strong like an ABBA record while the track before it - "Everything's Been Said About You" - comes with a smoky Hendrix style riff while the track that follows it - "There's A New Group In Town" - is a psychedelic funk jam. With a tight sense of musicianship and funk throughout, Breakaway were truly unique and, thanks to BBE, their work is about to get the attention it deserves.

Review: You'll find few jazz-funk era rays of sonic sunshine better than 'Give Me The Sunshine', the career highlight of relatively short-lived American soul band Leo's Sunshipp. It originally opened their 1978 debut album, We Need Each Other, but later became something of an anthem throughout the UK on the jazz-funk and rare groove scenes. If you don't already own a copy, you should cop one of these reissues. The full six-minute version of the track featured on the A-side is little more than a languid bob through sun-soaked pastures full of liquid bass, simmering strings, whistling synth lines and a smooth, ear-catching lead vocal. Also worth a listen is flipside 'Back For More', a more up-tempo modern soul club cut that's not quite as incendiary but every bit as alluring,

Review: Stone cold classic alert! First released on Studio One back in the late 1970s and a guaranteed reggae floor-filler ever since, 'Feel Like Jumping' is not only one of Coxsone Dodd's most potent productions, but also one of Marcia Griffiths' greatest moments. Now available again on a heavyweight vinyl pressing with extra bass-weight, the track us built around an infectious rhythm, dancing horn riffs, sweet backing vocals and a life-affirming lead vocal from Griffiths' celebrating the sheer joy of dancing. The flipside Dub Specialist revision is superb too - a genuinely bone-shaking, sub-heavy dancefloor dub that places echoing snippets of Griffiths' lead vocal and reverberating horns at the heart of the action.

Rather than leaning on the synths and drum machines of the post-disco era she looked to the golden instrumental years. Her debut album in 1996 is a real classic and is the source of the two gorgeous tunes here. Review: The Record Store Day releases are coming thick and fast already and Dynamite Cuts have got one of the more essential ones here. It features a pair of tracks from Steve Parks, who looks as cool as can be on the much loved cover. This is the first time the lead single has ever been put on its own 7" after first coming on his 1981 album. That is now mega-rare and a high value collector's item and surely this one will be too, soon enough. The mastering is high class, allowing the free flowing jazz funk goodness to really shine. On the reverse is a more intimate late-night romancer. What a pair of tunes.

Review: Aloha Got Soul is doing a great job in unearthing and reissuing rare, nigh-on unknown gems from Hawaii's long-overlooked music scene. Their latest release offers a fresh pressing of the near impossible to find debut album from the Mackey Feary Band, a 1970s rare groove outfit whose trademark sound stitched together elements of soul, funk, jazz and rock. As you'd expect, it's suitably sunny, with some sumptuous, glassy-eyed blue-eued soul moments (see 'You're Young' and the horizontal 'Catherine') being joined by tactile soundscapes ('I Remember You'), string-drenched up-tempo workouts ('A Million Stars'), funky dancefloor jams ('Powerslide'), spacey, synth-sporting workouts ('My Hands Do Play') and classical guitar-sporting gems ('Interlude in Mood').

The Other World (5:05)
The River Must Flow (3:45)
Review: 80s soul jazz sensation and keyboardist Judy Roberts debut with her The Other World album and went on to out another nine full length. The first remained her best, though, and two tunes from it make up this hot new 7" on Dynamite. It's the title track that goes first and is an uplifting and life-affirming soul-jazz jam with busy drumming, hectic chord work and a fantastic lead guitar that brings the Balearic vibes. Things slow down on the flip with the more sentimental and noodling jazz-funk bass and laidback grooves of 'The River Must Flow.'

Didn't I Treat You Right Girl (3:48)
Review: Modern soul fans will know how well-revered the 'Kick It Off' tunes is that was released in the mid-70s on a small indie label, Ndugu. Well the band behind the music was Kenyatta, and now some more of their previously unreleased tunes have been discovered by the Epsilon Records label. Now pressed up to this limited 45rpm, they are super vintage soul tunes with all the lo-fi production and unbridled vocal passion you would expect. They have been carefully remastered but havent lost that authentic old school edge. 'If We Only Had' is the more raw and direct of the two, while the flip is that bit more sweet and sentimental.

This new one was recorded live at The Blue Note jazz club and is set full of covers of Sting's best material. 'Roxanne' is a soothing lullaby with gentle pianos and delicate flutes, 'Fields Of Gold' is as stirring as the original compete with warming applause from the audience and 'Every Breath You Take' is a big band highlight in the middle of the set that is all the better for the sound of the audience clapping along. This is a fun set with a tender heart.

Review: Original disco remixer John Morales has spent much of the last decade delivering superb, multi-track reworks of classic cuts, in the process showcasing the sublime musicianship and vocals at the heart of these much-loved classics. He's the perfect choice, then, to dip into the immense back catalogue of leading Philadelphia Soul star Teddy Pendergrass and deliver updated versions. The resultant two-disc set is as inspired as you'd expect, with Morales delivering a blend of peak-time ready revisions of surging dancefloor anthems ('The More I Get, The More I Want', 'Don't Leave Me This Way', 'You Can't Hide From Yourself', 'Life is a Song Worth Singing'), sensitive revisions of deeper catalogue cuts and stunning reworks of jaw-dropping slow jams. Throughout, the troubled but immensely talented singer remains the undisputed star of the show.

Review: One of the UK's most distinctive, consistent and authentic male soul voices returns with his eighth album in 27 years... And it's a serious piece of work. Rich in range, warmth, creativity and a keen eye on the dancefloor, everything about him feels refreshed and energised. Highlights include the Dilla-meets-Iz & Diz style "This Way That Way", the glistening Balearic charm of "Feeds My Mind", the syrupy organs and harmonies on "Insatiable". Winding down with the almost filmic narrative "Grey Clouds", it's one of those records that will have you leaping up, flipping to side A and starting all over again. Feel the love.

Review: Soul fans are in heaven this month, just from the releases of Soul Direction alone. The label has been hard at work serving up plenty of golden nuggets and next in the spotlight is Joe Adams. 'That's Not Half Bad' is his stunning version of the Gene Woodbury classic. This is another lost tune that was found on a DAT tape recording made from material that was laying around in an old basement. It comes steeped in rich Philly soul and with gorgeous vocals that for us outshine the original. On the flip, it is backed with an equally sublime mid-tempo heart-wrencher for those tender moments.

Review: Soul-Direction Records recently had huge success with the release of the Decisions' 'We're In Love/I Love You' and now follow it up with another vital 45rpm after a conversation with Numero who gave their permission. As such this is the only 7" vinyl release of 'P's and Q's' and its instrumental version. These tracks were part of the quartet from Washington DC's recordings with DC International. The band generated plenty of local buzz but never quite got the major label deal they craved. On these evidence of these two, though, they should have. 'P's & Q's' is lively and funky work, with heart-melting vocals and super smooth grooves.

Review: A steady stream of super singles is coming from the good people at Soul-Direction Records this month. Next up is this previously unissued 60s soul groover from Eddie Holman which has until now been lost in the belongings of legendary Philly producer, musician and songwriter John Stiles. But lucky for us, it has now been unearthed. Word is it was recorded at Virtue Studios in Philadelphia and Eddie's rendition comes with piercing vocals. They are over the top of a pounding Northern Soul style beat that will find plenty of fans on a heaving and sweaty dance floor.

Review: A decade after it first surfaced on CD and digital, Kaidi Tatham's superb contribution to Jazz:Refreshed's now legendary 5ive series of mini-albums has finally made it onto vinyl. We don't expect these to hang around in stock too long, in part because it's one of the most consistently on-point and musically expansive sets in Tatham's vast catalogue - and that's saying something. For proof, check the soulful bruk-up business of 'To My Surprise' (reminiscent of the best of the collective Bugz in the Attic project he was a big part of), the fluid, spiritual jazz-funk brilliance of opener 'Don't Hide Your Love' and the expansive, up-tempo excellence of 'Organic Juggernaut', where fluttering flutes, squelchy bass and sparkling pianos catch the ear.

Review: Urban Discos continue to stake their claim forebearers of Japan's electronic underground, this time releasing a new split J-funky, neo-soul single from Spice Rhythm as proof. The project, consisting off bassist Mitsuta Mori and drummer Shunsuke Uehara, here deliver their first 7", 'Without U' and 'Sozo'. Guest vocals are provided by stars Miri, Go and Hanah Spring, blending the "warm smell of coffee" with trilling la's, slapping funk instrumentals, and easily slick progressions. This is contentment in musical form; we hope it assuages your anxieties as it does ours.

Let Him Be Your Everything (3:43)
Review: Another week brings another monster new 45 from the incomparable Athens of the North. This time out it is an early 80s bit of irresistible gospel, disco and boogie from Earl Young. 'Take Them In Prayer' is pure gold thanks to its tight and funky rhythm section, the delicate thinking on the keys and the heart aching vocals of earl Young that soar up top. Flip it over and on the reverse of this one and you will find 'Let Him Be Your Everything,' a quiet love song with only melancholic keys for company. It's the complete opposite of the a-side but is just as devastating for different reasons.

Review: French-Haitian saxophone player Ulysse laid this cult gem down in 1983. After its release, he became an underground sensation within the niche French boogie scene, Both of the tunes which now get reissued manage to successfully mix political statements with dance-floor fire. First up is 'Naima' which is about the resilience of a woman who has grown up in war. On the flip is 'Tiers Monde' which is a much more heavy digital reggae tune that offers a reminder that we must not forget about abandoned children of the Third World. This was big in Paris in the 80s and will be just as big now.

Review: The community-based collective Voices Of East Harlem blessed the world with three albums and a whole string of funky singles back in the day. They were produced by the dream team pairing of Leroy Hutson and Curtis Mayfield and came on Just Sunshine Records over the course of five years. Many cult tracks were born and two of them get reissued here on this new and limited edition 7" for Dynamite Cuts. 'Can You feel It' is deep cut funk with steamy vocals and Part 2 is a little more spaced out and cosmic with tumbling drums and freeform synths. Superb stuff.

Review: The Preservation Project is a reissue label which focuses on especially obscure and unreleased music from the annals of funk and soul. Presented with care and offering music that genuinely needs a proper release, they've become a trusted source of discovery for devoted diggers. On this 7" you can hear the sound of WHLS, who have a classic 60s sound with all the dust and crackle of the recording techniques intact. It's a portal into another era as well as a fine, soaring piece of beautifully composed, richly orchestrated soul. You might think some reissues could well be left alone, but these singles are gems for those eternally hunting for sounds unheard.

The Kent Soul label has put together the 14 tunes they think best represent the sounds Los Angelenos, often of Mexican descent, love so much and are famous for having blasting from their low riding motors. This is the sort of music you can hear in East LA or Van Nuys Boulevard in the northwest of the city and is made up of sweet soul sounds that have been carefully dug out and unearthed over the years.

Now P-Vine serve up a couple of singles from it, one of which has had a T Groove edit. Spanning a wide range of soul and jazz-funk styles, 'Open Soul' has a rubbery bassline and sock chord work with some big vocals and smooth grooves. It is an epic trip into space-soul territory. On the flip is 'It Ain't Fair', a much more slow and sentimental cut with romantic vocals and yearning chords.
