Review: Collins & Collins was a short-lived but no less significant collaboration between American soul brother-sister duo Bill and Tonee Collins. They've been the subject of many-a-reissue over the years but none so far have harked back to the obvious: their debut, self-titled album, which contained a wealth of slick covers of soul standards like 'Top Of The Stairs' and 'Can't Turn Down Love', effectively amounting to a wordless masterclass in loving cool. The sound is snappy and high-fidelity, owing to the unsung but rather lengthy production going in, and it's beautifully backed up by both members' sweet voices, which resonate in a high-low, yin-yanging, equal-opposite musical dao.

Review: Australian DJ and producer Dave Mathmos serves up an obscure edits entree, sampling/reworking a whopping seven disco cuts from the late 1970s and early 1980s, but adding just enough modern flair to essentially make them his own. A well-rounded, sticky quality is heard on this septagonal crock of heaters, with the downtempo slink-funk of 'Late At Night' and the equally sumptuous, string-backed plod of 'Wonderful Feeling' remaining our highlights.

Review: Southside Movement was a Chicago funk band that was busy during the mid 70s releasing a total of three albums between 1973 and 1975 on Wand and 20th Century Records. They also collaborated with the lush tones of soul singer and fellow Chicagoan Jackie Ross on records for Chess and Brunswick that have long since been forgotten. Until now, that is, because P-VINE has put together this great reissue of the music that was only released in limited test presses back in the day, and has added to it some previously unreleased tracks. The standout here is 'You Are The One That I Need' with its tropical funky vibes.

Review: Hanah Spring is a leading Japanese soul diva who has become a real star over the last decade. This is her latest self produced album and it comes five years after her last. This one bottles up plenty of new r&b flavours and 90s vibes, which are the sound of her roots, as well as some fine and sophisticated production from mabanua, Shingo Sekiguchi, DJ HAZIME, Shun Ishiwaka, Uyama Hiroto and grooveman Spot amongst others. Guest musicians also feature on this contemporary neo-soul delight as does a cover of Erykah Badu's timeless 'Appletree.'

Review: Too-Rye-Ay is one of those albums etched into the popular consciousness of the UK - the sound of a million pints being quaffed and bawdy singalongs from city centres to provincial locales. It's fascinating to learn that Dexys Midnight Runners' most popular album was a blight on their catalogue for bandleader Kevin Rowland, but 40 years on he's putting things right with a remixed version of the album. The idea of hearing 'Come On Eileen' in a whole new form is hard to imagine, but here's your chance, and who should we trust other than the artist themselves to say, this is Too-Rye-Ay as it should have sounded.

Review: Stone Flower was a little-known, short-lived record label licensed exclusively to Sly Stone himself. It produced but four singles in the period 1970-74, and beyond that, saw to a short run of LPs from the likes of Gladys Knight, Herbie Mann and Eddie Jefferson. However, thanks to a series of retakes and bonus material, LITA were able to reproduce this compilation; a compendium of all the best music the label had to offer, with choice bits from Joe Hicks, Sly, Little Sister and 6ix in tow.

Review: A record about discovery and love from Adam Scones' travels between New York City and Brazil, 'Brookly to Brooklin' is gripping from start to finish, opening with the soulful 'Cold 40's' which showcases Scone's sensational organ skills at their utmost. 'Anadira' is a relaxing tropical slow jam, interlaced with heaven-sent choir vocals. The title track 'Brooklyn to Brooklin' sees the album concept at its full potential, a mix of classic New York jazz sax, courtesy of Neil Sugarman, and Brazilian Bossa Nova rhythms. 'What's Her Name' brings swing into the fray, whilst 'All These Bad Things' is a quintessential lovemaking anthem. On 'Golden State' Jimmy James takes the reigns with some nasty guitar riffs that pierce straight to the soul, sure to be a favourite with many with it's rock and roll attitude.

Heart To Heart (6:06)
Review: Nigerian disco-boogie act Galaxy's sole, self-titled album has become a holy grail for Afro-boogie collectors over the last few years, so it's no surprise to see Italian crate diggers Mondo Groove giving it the reissue treatment. It was produced by Jake Sollo - one of Nigeria's premier funk and soul musicians of the '70s and '80s - and recorded in the UK, though it was originally only ever released in his home country. Full of killer grooves (Randy Taylor's bass playing stands out), spacey synths and group vocals from the trio known as the 'Galaxy Girls', the set is packed with highlights. Our picks include a sublime, slow-motion reggae-boogie cover of the Police's 'The Bed's Too Big Without You', the intergalactic, club-ready brilliance of 'Galaxy' and the unbridled, life-affirming sweetness of 'Next To You'.

So Busy (5:56)
Review: The Life Classics label is back with more gems to light up your day (or night.) This is a fine fifth volume of edits from Sanctuary that tweak some timeless disco sounds for modern dance floors. There is a glorious sense of soul to 'Feelings' with its boogie-fied drums and soaring vocal harmonies perfectly ready to melt your heart. 'Get Away' is a harder edged cut with raw claps and lively rhythms all topped off with impassioned vocals. 'Running' is high on 80s vibes with its male vocal and glossy synths all irresistible to anyone with a beating heart and 'So Busy' closes down with a deeper, more sentimental feel.

Where Is The Love (3:25)
Review: What we would give to go digging in the vast vaults of influential soul label JB's. Well, thankfully, they do it themselves each Record Store Day and as such we have some real treasure here with Richard Caiton's swooning and soul-drenched love song 'Thank You.' It's a super rare one from back in 1978 that is a real piece of New Orleans soul history (it is eye wateringly pricey for an original, too, with the only current one listed at just L2500.) On the flip is another lush modern soul tune 'Where Is The Love' which has been arranged by Wardell Quezerque.

Review: Dropping some 22 years after their debut single appeared in stores, Reel People's Love 2 album - their first full-length for five years - could well be their most assured, confident and polished set of songs to date. In keeping with their soulful blueprint, the music enthusiastically blurs the boundaries between house, nu-disco, 80s soul, jazz-funk and boogie, with a string of guest vocalists (Eric Roberson, Jill Rock Jones and Paula included) swinging by to showcase their undoubted talents. Our picks of an extremely strong bunch include the dreamy, head-nodding Balearic soul of 'Dance In Her Eyes', the synth-soaked goodness of 'Save A Lil Love', the Latin-flecked deep house warmth of 'Something New' and the effortlessly summery brilliance of 'Vibe'.

It has been bootlegged many times before but this is an official pressing for Record Store Day 2023. 'What's The Use?' is super feel good, with gloriously sunny horns, nice loose percussion and organic, woody drums all topped off with Tony's buttery and emotive vocals. Ain't Nothin Nowhere (2:15)
Review: Rampart takes us to Houston for some glorious soul that gets specially reissued for the first time ever for this year's Record Store Day. It comes from TSU Toronados, who were the house band for Ovide, and if you can find an original it will cost you over L300 on the second-hand market. The A-side is a super mellow groove gem with 'Please Heart Don't Break' packed with emotion, sweet vocals and harmonies. 'Ain't Nothin' Nowhere' on the b-side is a much more energetic cut with up-tempo funk grooves and a barrage of raucous and atmospheric vocals up top. Both are effective dance floor tunes for different reasons.

Review: Freddie Hubbard's 1979 version of 'Little Sunflower' is a soul-jazz classic. Since the full version of Hubbard's vocal re-make (the trumpeter first recorded an instrumental take in 1968) only ever appeared on a hard-to-find promo 12", this Record Store Day reissue should be an essential purchase. It remains a gentle, breezy and sunset-ready jazz-dance gem, with Hubbard's emotion-rich vocals and mazy trumpet solos riding Latin-tinged percussion, elastic double bass and some suitably jammed-out jazz pianos.

This time he welcomes Ghia for a second outing following the sold out and hugely desirable first one. This one comes in the form of a full length album featuring some previously unissued songs and lots of the group's signature downtempo synth pop sounds. They are soothing, lush and soulful, with delicate female vocals over sweet and innocent 80s keys and drum sounds. Perfectly steamy and sexy for slow dancing or lazy afternoons.

Review: Somehow what we have here is a lost MPB gem, but from rural Finland. This is a first-ever reissue of it, 33 years after it was first released by the Brazilian pair of Rosanna Guimaraes Tavares and Zelia Nogueira da Fonseca aka Rosanna & Zelia. They left their home in Latin America in 1988 and headed to Europe where they dropped a wealth of albums in Germany into the mid-2000s. Zelia still make music and the pair sang on a house cut by German mainstay Ian Pooley. They wrote this one while on a short trip to Finland for the local label Maumau Music and it got a regional release at the time - and now makes it onto the world stage.

Review: Inokasira Rangers is a reggae band from Tokyo who've been around since the 1990s, but they're hardly (criminally) known outside of Japan. Their latest release, 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You,' promises to change that, covering Frankie Valli's timely original from the late '60s, not to mention Crystal Waters' dance-pop hit on the B. A Shibuya-kei sensibility runs through this sweet pair of covers, but the main mode is lo-fi reggae. The Waters cover is particularly charming, as if this were the original, and the song had existed as a folk song for generations prior to the glitzy rave version.

Here, on three originals from the band, Annie, Edward, and R.C., are joined by their children, R.C.'s grandson Jaylin on drums, Edward's son Troy providing vocals, Annie's husband Willie on guitar, and their son Willie on bass. Review: Best known as a titular member of Durand Jones & the Indications, a group whose signature soulful sound has seen them reach international audiences, Wait Til I Get Over marks Jones' first foray into solo work. Using this as an opportunity to delve into the more personal, storytelling potential of solo artistry, the record is firmly situated in his hometown - Hillaryville, Louisiana -; a town initially founded as a form of reparations to previously enslaved African Americans. The first single to be released from the album, Lord Have Mercy, travels through Jones' family history, recalling his grandmother's memories of moving to the town as a child, via cathartic, wild and raucous vocals. This is a release that masterfully bridges the internal conflict of feeling connected to a place that's at once home but also a historically complex space for its African American community.

Review: Normally found recording with his band The Indications, on this new record for Dead Oceans Durand Jones goes solo to explore a more idiosyncratic dimension to his Southern soul. Wait Til I Get Over is a highly personal record which finds Jones digging deep into his roots growing up in Louisiana, reflecting on his ancestry and delivering a potent black music which draws on gospel, rock n' roll and soul and pushes those fundamentals into exciting new places. It's a record to feel with every fibre of your body, with Jones' grit-edged but oh-so-sweet voice at the centre.

Review: Through his work with revivalist soul band the Indications, Durand Jones has already proved that he's a serious talent - a vocalist and lyricist whose impressive range and impassioned, emotive delivery mark him out as a genuine star in the making. Wait Till I Get Over, his debut solo album, will only enhance his reputation. Framed as a love letter to his hometown of Hillaryville, with thoughtful lyrics that reflect not only on his own intriguing life story but also the history of the town's black community, the collected songs veer from string-laden, socially conscious ballads and fuzzy rhythm & blues workouts, smoky slow jams, nods to Sly Stone and righteous, reverb-laden gospel winners.

Originally released on It/RCA in 1978, it's an album with a quirk in its lavish arrangements, which were put together by the likes of Pino Daniele and many other respected figures from the history of Neaopolitan music. It's Labonia who gives the album its unique, wild energy though, while Jenny Sorrenti brings some wonderful vocal additions to 'E Jennifer Non Sa'. If you're into the world of European soul oddities from yesteryear, you're going to love this reissue on La Matta.

Redolent of the like of Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers and even The Eagles, 'West End Coast' thankfully has chops and talent to stand as much more than a mere retro curiosity or museum piece - ditties like 'You Can Feel It' and 'In My Pocket' channel vocalist Andy Platts' falsetto croon, heavenly harmonies and AM radio production to considerable satisfaction for all.

Review: The Brasileiro Treasure Box Of Funk & Soul gems keep flying out from Cultures Of Soul: Novos Baianos' 1970 rarity "Juventude Sexta E Sabado" is a heartfelt, yearning slice of psychedelic soul peppered with urgent Plant-level vocals while Dom Salvador & Abolicao's "Uma Vida" is the ultimate feel-good song: what begins as a funk soul tracks suddenly rips into gospel with so much gusto you genuinely can't stay still. Review: Izipho Soul once again link up with Sound of Superbad here on a super smooth and seductive funk 7". This one raises the bar even in comparison to the super nice 'I Want Cha' last time out. Chicago-based singer extraordinaire Robert IMtume Owens is the man who offers up his beautifully buttery tones, which are layered over nice classy drums and warm synths, with trumpets and strings all adding ear golden texture. The 'S.O.S. Vibe Mix' on the flip is a heavier jam thanks to the more direct percussion, but with everything else also turned up it's still a super lush tune with those vocals doing plenty of great work.

Review: The Acid Jazz label opens it archives to turn out this magnificent slice of northern soul from the legend that is Dean Parrish, a man who sold over a million records and worked with the likes of Jimi Hendrix. It's 10 years old but still bangs and is maybe one of the best records of his career. The psychedelic 'It's Time - Purple Mountain Majesty' is a hard hitting tune with layers of percussion, amour nines, bendy guitar riffs and soaring vocals that have female backings for extra richness. The version on the flip is more tense, steamy and rousing.

From her roots in India, to becoming a world famous artist with a celebrated career in music and acting, Asha Puthli forged a career path through '60s psych, free jazz, pop, rock, disco, and more. Her 1976 album The Devil Is Loose is maybe the most well known record, featuring the classic 'Space Talk' which was championed by many DJs, most famously the late David Mancuso at The Loft, in addition to being sampled The Notorious B.I.G., P Diddy and The Pharcyde. In later years, Puhtli went on to collaborate with the likes of Bill Laswell, DJ Spooky and Talvin Singh.

Review: Soul Jazz Records continues to trawl through the vast archives of Jamaica's Studio One label and its many offshoots. This time round, they're focusing on uplifting, feel-good rocksteady and soulful reggae cuts from the late 1960s and early '70s. As you'd expect, it's an excellent collection that not only showcases classic cuts and well-worn "riddims", but also obscurities and the sort of rare gems that make reggae collectors go weak at the knees. With such stars as Alton Ellis, John Holt, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, the Heptones and Jackie Mittoo all featured, and exhaustive sleeve notes from reggae scholar Rob Chapman, Rocksteady Got Soul is another essential Studio One compilation from the reliable Soul Jazz Records crew.

"Ain't nothing gunna keep us silent" the lead singer yelps on 'Stop Der', which is an immediate banger after the soothing ambience and closely mic-ed whispers of the opener, which muse on what it means to be black. The rest of the record is a hard hitting mix of crisp drums and empowering vocals, with elements of classic soul as well as contemporary jazz colouring the grooves. This is powerful music with an even more powerful message.

There's a really raw rusty garage funk to both sides here; both the classic R&B swing, majestic organs and powerful vocals of "Look Out" and the sweaty instrumental frenzy "Mother Duck" instantly enrapture and make you ponder the age-old question... "You Can't Keep A Good Man Down" is a straight-up northern soul stomper with big drums, powerful momentum and emphatic harmonies. Looking for a more tender moment? Now they return with another perfect delivery of mid-tempo excellence that will appeal to fans of Eddie Holman and Billy Stewart. 'Nobody's Clown' pirouettes on splashy cymbals with natty chord riffs and twirling drums that dance their way into your heart. 'My Baby Just Care For Me', a favourite amongst the lovers rock-powered 1970s blues party scene in London, is undoubtedly one of their best joint efforts. The riddim is loose and languid, the added piano solos pleasingly expressive and jangling, and Campbell soulful lead vocal tterly beguiling. Chunkier, more dancefloor-friendly roots reggae vibes are the order of the day on flipside cut 'Jah Jah He Morn Ya', where Campbell's vocal improvisation between verses add even more energy to an already heavyweight jam. This isn't that gem, but something arguably even more exciting: some previously unreleased business from the same obscure, overlooked artist. 'Be My Lady' dates from a similar period and sees Jay sing swooning words to a member of the opposite sex over a sunny and kaleidoscopic blend of rubbery bass, clipped guitars and shiny synthesizers. Flipside 'Come Out Tonight' is rather tasty, too. Slower and even warmer, it sits somewhere between 80s soul and yacht rock.
