Fever (reissue)
Cat: SJR 43412. Rel: 08 Nov 19
  1. Horace Andy - "Fever" (3:47)
  2. Im & The Agg - "The Flue" (2:04)
Review: "Fever" is one of Horace Andy's biggest hits. Amazingly, it has never been given its own release so Studio One has done the right thing and put it out on a super loud 12" for the first time. It first landed way back in 1973 before Andy rose to contemporary fame appearing with Massive Attack on five of their albums, but still hits hard. The lush vocals sit well in the swinging drums and bass, and makes it a sure fire dance floor destroyer that won't hang around. Comes accompanied with a Cedric "Im" Brooks instrumental version on the flip.

Fired Up
Fired Up (7" + sticker)
Cat: LTR 004. Rel: 18 Dec 20
  1. Fired Up (3:43)
  2. Fired Up (instrumental) (3:42)
Review: Toronto vocalist Maya Killtron (real name Maya Chilton) is a valued member of the Love Touch family. 'Fired Up' is her second release for the Canadian label - her first, 'Found You', dropped in late 2019 - and once again sees her join forces with producer Gil Musada of Circle Research and The Precious Lo's fame. In its' A-side full vocal form, the track is a gloriously colourful and celebratory slab of early '80s boogie revivalism that's so accurately executed that it genuinely sounds like it could have been made and released in 1983. That instrumental - all vibrant synthesizer sounds, squeezable bass, clipped guitar riffs, sweeping (synth) strings and unfussy drum machine beats - can be admired in full on the flip.

  9. Father's Child (6:56)
  10. The Final Frame (4:59)
Review: One of UK soul's brightest sparks and Danger Mouse on production: Michael Kiwanuka's highly anticipated sophomore takes a running jump and kicks the Motowns out of the difficult second album cliche. Ranging from epic urgent cinematica "Rule The World" to the smouldering blues ballad "The Final Frame" by way of ELO-meets-Finlay Quaye fuzzy rock funk "One More Night" Michael and Mouse take us through a detailed, dreamy and dramatic adventure that really explores Michael's gutsy range and developed writing style. On level, if not better, than Home Again.

Review: Southern soul legend Lee Moses is arguably best remembered for his sublime and sought-after 1971 album "Time and Place", a set previously reissued by Future Days/Light In The Attic. Moses had been unsuccessfully trying to find fame in the six years leading up to the release of that set, offering up a string of singles recorded with Atlanta producer Johnny Brantley. This fine compilation gathers together all of those rare singles and B-sides, thus completing Moses' compelling musical story. There's much to set the pulse racing, from his bustling version of soul classic "Reach Out, I'll Be There" and a riotous funk cover of the Beatles "Day Tripper", to the sensational "Bad Girl", to the touching "You Are Too Much For The Human Heart" and full-throttle "Never In My Life".

Review: The mysterious Sault troupe is back with a call to action and revolutionary soul soundtrack that really bangs the box. "Ain't nothing gunna keep us silent" the lead singer yelps on 'Stop Der', which is an immediate banger after the soothing ambience and closely mic-ed whispers of the opener, which muse on what it means to be black. The rest of the record is a hard hitting mix of crisp drums and empowering vocals, with elements of classic soul as well as contemporary jazz colouring the grooves. This is powerful music with an even more powerful message.

Review: The cover-ups are still being pulled back to reveal the true talents behind so many collector-only 45"s fifty years later. A community effort from fellow diggers and DJs, so many soul mysteries and unheard recordings are unravelled and revealed right here before your very ears. The Mayfield Singers' incredible "Don't Start None" and The Show Stopper's doo-wop jam "Gotta Get Closer" were once the sole preserve of master tapes and have not been released before. Elsewhere Otis Pollard's "Remember Hurting Me So" is finally reveals as George Jackson, Detroit Shakers are revealed to be Thee Enchantments (thanks to Keb Darge) Loaded with more unheard or impossible to find cuts than most collections of this nature, Outta Sight really have created a significant body of work here.
