This latest 7" tackles some mighty original material in the form of Thelma Houston's gloriously uplifting 70s Motown classic 'I'm Here Again'. It's just as life-affirming and joyous in Mr K's hands with some extra drum weight and drawn-out grooves that will energise any dancefloor. On the flip is 'Time Of The Season' which taps into some golden funk and soul with soaring vocals and big horns over a killer, infectious bassline.

Review: Another credit to the edit by one of the true masters of the art here. Danny Krivit adds another worthy resplice to his long running series on Most Excellent Unlimited out of New York City. This one features Rotary Connection's "I Am the Black Gold of the Sun" which was originally released in 1971 and most famously covered by Masters at Work back in 1997 under the Nuyorican Soul moniker. Krivit's edit is respectful as always, simply tightening it up and remastering it on 45 for the first time. Over on the flip, you've got a version of Steve Wonder's 'Pastime Paradise' which just adds a subtle intro that uses the tambourine rhythm to lead into the body of the song - perfect!

Review: Stix Records is the sub-label of superb French outlet Favorite Recordings, and it is reserved for heavy dub cuts. This one finds label regular Mato reworking a classic reggae roller first written by Kool & The Gang. His gorgeous version is perfect for hot summer nights with its languid Fender Rhodes leads and sun kissed beats. It's loved up and perfectly, frankly. On the flip is a reggae rework of Bill Withers', who is sadly no long with us, 'Use Me,' repackaged with a playful harmonica lead and more grinding chords over the gently tumbling beats.

Review: 45 Loves is a label based in Condom, France that specialises in very limited DJ tools on vinyl 7'. Its next release comes from Jerome Potin aka Moar; producer, remixer, DJ and A&R at the Trad Vibe label from Nantes, who serves up some low-slung grooves on the Funky Party two-tracker. On side A, you've got the late-night boogie-down vibe of 'J', and the long hot sexy summer nights continue over on the flip with the funked-up vocal disco house heater 'JJ'.

Review: The 45 Loves crew brings more prime dance floor heat here with a double hip hop single that drips with classic references. The first side, 'G', has boss rhymes from a pair of MCs and some lush backing vocals that add the velvet, while big trumpets and deep cut beats provide the groove. On the flip, things get more sweet and laid back, with a rolling beat riding up and down beneath nice Rhodes chords, lush strings and smooth female flow that cannot fail to bring the good times.

Review: This hugely in demand modern soul masterpiece gets a special 40th anniversary reissue thanks to the Selector Series label. Originally released on New Jersey's Debbie Records in 1981, the label has dug into the archives to find a boogie-tactic reworking on a classic standard from The Carpenters. Often seen listed for over L400 on second hand markets, it is a serious collector's piece. It's been reissued as part of various albums over the years but never on a slick 45rpm like this. It comes with original artwork and will have any dance floors in a spin.

Review: James Mason's 'Rhythm of Life' - one of the long overlooked but now celebrated musician's most popular cuts - has never appeared on a seven-inch single before, in part because its' six-minute length made it more suitable for 12" singles and LPs (it first appeared as the title track of Mason's 1977 debut album). Dynamite Cuts have decided to address this by preparing their own (fully licensed) seven-inch edit, which successfully chops down the high-octane, spiritually inspired jazz-funk gem without losing any of its energy or soul. This time round it comes backed by another classic cut from the Rhythm of Life LP, the more laidback, spacey synth solo-sporting jazz-funk warmth of 'Good Thing'.

Singer-songwriter Mona, who recently moved from Ukraine to Germany with her production partner MC Fame, goes head-to-head with instrumental supergroup Hammerbrook Sound Machine (a five-member troupe boasting members of Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band and the Mighty Mocambos plus MC Fame on Moog solo duties. Review: The one and only Mr K sure does know how to cook up a masterful edit. Here he heads into gospel territory with the latest 7" in Most Excellent Unlimited's collaborations with him. Both of these tunes are appearing on 7" vinyl for the first time here and have long been staples of the sets of Danny Krivit. His 'Churchapella' edit of Madonna's 'Like A Prayer' is as holy and steamy as it gets with the whole thing sure to uplift and energise any crowd. On the backside is a superb edit of the Clark Sisters slinky rare groove gem 'Ha-Ya (Eternal Life).' It's a slightly slower tune but one that makes just as much of an impact.

Review: Dusty-fingered reissue imprint South Street Soul continues to dig deep for inspiration, looking beyond the obvious for classic cuts that don't get the recognition they perhaps deserve. Both tracks here were taken from Maxi Anderson's sole solo album, a sweet and at times sugary collection of disco-era soul slow jams originally released by jazz stable Blue Note way back in 1977. 'Lover To Lover', which sits here on the A-side, is the pick of the pair: a lusciously orchestrated, tactile and loved-up slab of slow-motion disco-soul topped off by Anderson's genuinely brilliant and emotionally expressive lead vocal. 'Walk Softly', meanwhile, is even slower and more immersive - a heart-aching slab of orchestrated soul that's as tear-jerking as it is musically expansive.

Review: Rachel Maxann is a globetrotting vocal talent from Memphis, whose newfound recognition in the soul scene owes to her many latest tours and live performances, both in the city and around the world. And that's not to mention her deft and cheeky fusions, such as that of Motown and indie rock. Now two originals for Original Gravity surface, hearing her embark on building up a recorded music edifice, after two contributions to the label's split singles series appeared last year. 'Time Flies With You' is a paean to love made in the dance, hearing Maxann jollily note the atemporal feeling of spending time with her favourite person. Relations are soured on the B-side, however, with 'Why Can't You Miss Me Too?' revealing the melismatic potential in Maxann's voice, not to mention a penchant for dramatic, heartbroken storytelling.

Review: After a start in the immensely popular Buffalo Springfield and a two-year stint forming Poco in 1968, he entered into a partnership with a young singer/songwriter called Kenny Loggins. Their career lasted for seven years producing multiple albums together. In 1979 Jimmy Messina released his first album which featured the well-regarded Jazz Fusion and Smooth Jazz tracks 'Do You Want To Dance & 'Love is Here'. Review: The Mayberry Movement's 'I Can See Him Loving You' is a Northern Soul masterpiece that was supposed to be released in 1974 but ultimately never was. Why, no know can work out, because it is such a lovely tune it would have been a real classic. This take on Ray Dahrouge's original song is drenched in heart-aching soul with uplifting grooves helping to ease the pain. It has a grand and steamy finale, too and is backed with a lively B-side balad to swell the heart. A real doozy that finally sees the light of day.

Here the little-known vocalist takes a different approach, re-casting himself as a throaty, James Brown influenced '70s soul singer. He's at his heartfelt, full-throttle best on "Can't Love You Any More", a deliciously heavy and authentic chunk of Southern-fried deep soul complete with additional falsetto parts from fellow singer Pratt. The key to the track's success is the fantastic backing provided by Cold Diamond & Mink. Proof is provided on the flip via the band's effortlessly good instrumental take.

It expands on the core sound the band have championed so far with cues from Roy Ayers, Isaac Hayes, George Benson, Eric B and Rakim all stitched into their own particular brand of soul. Review: There is no rest for the good people at Super Disco Edits - they ended 2021 in fine fashion and kick off 2022 on just as strong a footing. This time out they serve up a superb slice of soul originally recorded in 1971 by The Michicgans, who crafted it in the Don Davis studios and had it engineered by the late great Ed Wolfdrum. 'Look At My Back Wheels' has drums to die for - they're dumpy and well defined yet loose, with unique vocals up top with a raw blue eyed funk. Flip it over and you will find the slower, more romantic soul sounds of 'It's All Coming Back to Me.'

Review: American singer Tony Middleton and Latin jazz percussionist Bobby Matos put out their cult Latin funk and boogie gems 'Return To Spanish Harlem' and 'Already Satisfied' in 1968 on Speed Records. An original is incredibly hard to find and there is currently only one listed at L750 on second hand sales sites. Both tunes are pure dance floor heat with the lead horns making plenty of noise, the swinging rhythms sure to get you in a spin and the dancing keys the icing on the cake. Make sure you cop this genuine slice Harlem soul before its made rare again.

Review: This new 7" from Jimmy Mack is a delightful piece of sunny soul. The Wisconsin man's a€iPop Goes The Weasela€™ was originally released in 1983 and has become an incredibly hard to find tune, and expensive when you do. The original sets off on an airy groove, with gentle flute leads, trilling chords and the effortless vocal melting your heart. On the flip side is an edit from a friend of the label, Bristol's Admin, who is one of the hottest edit talents in the game right now. His version is cleaned up a little but is sympathetic to the original with plenty of feel good grooves.

Review: Over the years, the rare West Virginian soul gem, Garnet Mimms' 'Looking For You', saw many different release iterations. Originally out in 1966, it was first pitted alongside Mimms' B-side 'I'll Take Good Care Of You', providing certain hitmakership for the R&B emoter and his then label, United Artists. Several versions later, however, and we come to now, with the song now appearing in stereoized glory with its true soulmate: 'As Long As I Have You'. From the change in track (and in turn, the track title) we get the sense that Mimms truly found love and intends to keep it; the song is a swinging barrage of sensual, monogamous joy, and is remastered here for our 7-inched pleasure. Review: Eddie Carmichael started Mirror having left his previous band The Voshays when he caught their manager stealing. He formed it with Derry Shepherd, Sandy Ficca, Duncan Bethel, bass player Dave Segal, Bob Groszer on keys and Flynn Emanuel to play trombone. They were regular performers on Miami Beach and recorded only a few tunes, but what tunes they were. It is said that had the band had a better manager they could have gone on to be one of the best of their era. Either way, at least we have these two dazzling disco and soul gems.
