Review: Athens Of The North strike again. A big spinner for the likes of Floating Points, this rare-as-pigs-shoes 1980 45 from Ohio troupe Love Company has gone for big sums in the past. It's not hard to hear why; "Love Tempo" raises the heat with an unrelenting disco beat, coastal guitar textures and harmonies to swoon to. "Somebody Help Me Be Fair" flips for a much more sentimental story as Love Company unravel the problems of a menage-et-trois. Steamy.

Review: While Luther Davis is undoubtedly best known for his sought-after disco smash "You Can Be A Star", many collectors and deep funk DJs have long insisted that the more obscure "Keep On Dancin" is even better. Thanks to Athens of the North's timely reissue of the latter, you can now decide for yourself. Certainly, it's a ludicrously infectious, full-throttle disco-funk affair whose extreme dancefloor intensity is helped by Davis and company's liberal use of studio effects, psychedelic backing vocals and some serious eyes-closed guitar solos. This reissue comes with B-side bonus soothing slow jam "You", which is a serviceable chunk of deep soul.

Review: It was back in 1986 when obscure UK electrofunk band Leval released their sole 7" - a sparkling slab of pop-boogie brilliance that has long been a secret weapon for dusty-fingered diggers and Brit-funk collectors. As this Athens of the North reissue proves, the record remains a brilliant Brit-boogie gem. Check first 'Our Love', a confirmed earworm that sees the band wrap duetting male/female vocals around a deliciously bustling blend of rubbery slap-bass, eyes-closed soft rock guitars, warm synthesizer chords and a dewy-eyed, jazz-funk style breakdown. Flipside 'It's Up To You' is a little more eccentric thanks to an unusual time signature and drum track, but boasts the same addictive blend of male and female lead vocals, slap bass and synths.

Review: .Athens of the North has been a buy-on-sight for years. The Edinburgh-based soul, disco and funk reissue label rarely ever misses and does some of the most tireless digging in the game as this latest 7" shows. It is a spotlight on one of the best tunes made by Anthony Brightly while working with a young Wendy Walker. 'We've Got One' is dub tinged slow-motion funk with a glorious vocal, and on the flip is Legal Assault's 'Nice & Slow'. This one is also from the Sir George label and a sensuous deep soul and lo-fi gem with steamy vocals and lush chords.

Review: Many disco-era modern soul collectors regard, Larom Baker's "You're The Best", which initially appeared in 1978 on an impossible to find, single-sided 7" single, as one of the style's genuine "Holy Grail" records. It's good news, then, that Athens Of The North has secured the rights to reissue it, releasing the full studio version (rather than the shorter edit that was released all those years ago) for the very first time. It's a genuine gem, with Baker's deliciously breezy West Coast soul vocal seemingly floating over a killer backing track rich in hazy horns, bustling slap bass and crunchy Clavinet lines. Turn to the flipside for the more disco-minded "Train Of Thought", one of a string of recently discovered Baker recordings that form the basis of a forthcoming album of previously unreleased tracks.

Review: France's faves Battle Weapons deliver two heady new edits, only for those ready. On the A comes an ingenious, probably never-done-before, almost laughably why-hasn't-anyone-else-ever-thought-of-this-until-now breakbeat rendition of Peter Bjorn & John's 'The Young Folks'. To be frank, they've not done much besides beef up the backbeat a little, but a simple sprucing up is sometimes all a tune needs. On the flip comes a phattened version of 'Forgot About Dre' mashed up with the Azzido Da Bass UK garage classic 'Dooms Night', also produced to hilariously, surreally arresting effect.

Review: London's BDQ Records has got more gold here from the superb vocal talent that is Lydia Jane. Her smoky tones come across these two stylish mod-jazz gems starting with the titular 'Sweetheart' which has lazy and slow motion grooves with some lovely reverb-heavy guitar lines reign out next to Jane's sensuous jazz delivery. On the flip is 'Loser' which has a more upbeat feel with 60s tones to the vocals as the swinging drums and feathery snares all add extra depth. A lovely 7" here for fans of all styles of soul.

Review: Nicole "Lady" Wray has reinvented herself in recent years, swapping the contemporary, radio-friendly '90s R&B of her youth for a sound heavily influenced by vintage, 1960s and '70s soul and funk. It's a blend that was explored on last year's superb Queen Alone full-length. The two tracks showcased on this 7" were both featured on that album. "Underneath My Feet" is particularly potent, with Wray offering a rasping, impassioned vocal that seems to soar above the triple-time backing track. "Guilty", with its sweet guitars, harmony backing vocals and rock solid funk breakbeat, sounds a little like some of Sharon Jones' more poignant moments.

That arrives in January next year and is proceeded by this taster 7" featuring two singles from it. They showcase Wray's take on classic soul: her vocals do plenty of heavy lifting, and the instrumental funk all around her is steeped in the classic traditions, but it all comes with an extra raw edge, an urgency and crispness that brings it right up to date. 'Through It All' is a confessional that is powered by tight drums, where 'Under The Sun' is a more blissed out vibe.

This one is a classic amongst many that is often reissued to keep beat heads happy. If finds the mysterious re-editor add their take on Billy Squier's 1980 heavy rock workout and brings its bottom-heavy drums and the singer's impassioned vocal yelps to the fore, Plenty of the gnarled guitar riffs are removed too. The crew's subtle revision of Le Pamplemousse's drowsy, synth-laden deep disco shuffler 'Gimme What You Got' on the flip offers less intensity with its string-laden slice of sun-kissed sweetness.

Review: As they often like to do, Swiss label Burning Soul are dropping this one as this standard black 7" but also on these pages you will find a limited edition cream version. Either way the tunes are worthy of your attention from Luana. A-side jam 'Buckle Up' rides a judders mid tempo broken beat with funky bass and stepping synth sequences next to more pixelated cosmic keys. The r&b vocal is sleazy and seductive. On the flip is a trick with plenty of attitude from the vocal which is delivered with seance, control and determination. These are two standout cuts that blur the lines between genres to come up with something entirely new.

Review: Whether she likes it or not, Sophie Lloyd will always be known for the unfeasibly uplifting gospel disco-meets-gospel-house anthem 'Calling Out'. That was released five years ago and ever since, she's struggled to embrace it's shadow. With 'Angels By My Side', Lloyd seems to have embraced this, delivering another fine gospel-powered number that inhabits a similar sonic space while being different enough to avoid accusations of treading water. It's genuinely good, too, with Pauline Taylor delivering superb lead vocals over a hybrid gospel disco/stomping gospel sound hybrid full of Hammond organ licks, booming bass guitar, piano house riffs and stirring orchestration. In other words, it's another anthem in waiting.

They were initially recorded at Edgewood Studio in Washington DC in 1969 by Keni St. Lewis who was a prolific songwriter who recorded only a couple of his own tunes. The special Record Store Day 2021 limited and hand-numbered 7" offers up two different versions, both of which are primed and ready to add at least 10 degrees of heat to even the sunniest DJ set. The original US 7" mix is languid and long legged, laidback and in a hurry to go nowhere fast. The soaring strings and steamy vocal, tumbling perc and distant horns capture a lazy afternoon soaking up some rays. The extended UK 7" Grapevine RED 3 mix ups the ante a little for slightly more energetic moves.

Review: Marc LaRoi Cummings had one hit and one hit only, but it was a good one, and it's now presented on this Expansion 7" in all its glory. The a-side "Lots of Love" owes a clear debt to Stevie Wonder with its glorious musicianship, rolling funk and heart swelling vocal performance. On the flip, things get more unhinged, with a squelchy Moog based funk powering the track along as Cummings's vocals soar up top. Tight, kinetic, compelling, it's a great reverse to the lead track and makes this an essential slice of funk.

Review: A reissue of American singer Debra Laws' 1981 single here on Expansion. She made her debut as a solo recording artist in in the same year, with the release of her album titled Very Special. This album, produced by her brothers Hubert and Ronnie, was a success with the singles "On My Own" (a lovely neon-lit disco-funk groove) and "Very Special" (a super sensual ballad on the slo-mo tip) being featured here. Up until the beginning of the '90s, Laws worked with her three siblings, recording and doing many live performances in the United States and abroad. Samples from "Very Special" can be heard in Jennifer Lopez's 2002 hit single of "All I Have".

Review: You'll find few jazz-funk era rays of sonic sunshine better than 'Give Me The Sunshine', the career highlight of relatively short-lived American soul band Leo's Sunshipp. It originally opened their 1978 debut album, We Need Each Other, but later became something of an anthem throughout the UK on the jazz-funk and rare groove scenes. If you don't already own a copy, you should cop one of these reissues. The full six-minute version of the track featured on the A-side is little more than a languid bob through sun-soaked pastures full of liquid bass, simmering strings, whistling synth lines and a smooth, ear-catching lead vocal. Review: Fantasy Love re-issues a cherished soul and funk underground classic. Liason was a legendary Bay-Area group who were known for their vibrant performances and distinct sound. Led by Morris 'Skid' Clay, Liason was originally released on their independent imprint, 'A.L.C.' and named after three of the group's members' astrological signs: Aquarius, Libra, and Capricorn. Recorded in 1977, this double single shows the spirit of the band in these stellar songs. 'Life' features a grand vocal performance with a fantastic horn section while the B-side, 'Disco Party' enjoys dancefloor romp from the disco heyday. Both tracks are special in their own way. Review: After her magnetic debut EP for Running Circle in 2017, Nottingham's Yazmin Lacey lands on our charts with her follow-up 12", a piece of work that sounds deeply accomplished and expansive for being her second EP to date. Largely roaming within the jazzo-sphere, When The Sun Dips 90 Degress is a beautifully seductive five-tracker, with the artist's voice reigning supreme over the cascading showers of piano keys and subtle electronics, somehow tapping into the Alice Coltrane sort of vibe. There's no harp here, but plenty of soulful charisma. Fear not thy devout jazz fanatic - this can get real deep and real smooth. It's a broken beat fan's dream some true. More from Lacey is, indeed, expected in the remainder of the year. Marvellous stuff.

Review: Brit-boogie obscurity alert! You might not be familiar with La Famille - a short-lived group established by jazz guitarist Alan Weekes, whose members also included then future Soul 2 Soul singer Caron Wheeler and a pre-fame Cleveland Watkiss - but in 'Dancer', they made one of the loveliest jazz-funk/boogie crossover records of the early 1980s. Originally a white label-only release and near impossible to find since, the record has long been crying out for a reissue. It has all the ingredients you'd expect - squelchy synth-bass, soulful vocals, leisurely jazz guitars, drum machine beats and an overriding sense of musical sweetness - and is presented in equally essential vocal and instrumental mix variations.

Review: Leonard Lothlen is a California gospel music icon who this label made contact with for this release. It comes with a concept and that is "to place two gospel compositions recorded fifty years apart on one record." It means there are two very different and diverse tunes but two equally brillaint ones on this 7" with powerful vocals from Derick Hughes on 'In The Presence.' They come with a subtle doff of the cap to the late great Bishop Rance Allen. On the flip is 'Let Us Pray,' which was the first tune Leonard did with his GC's group in 1971. It is a real rarity and expensive gem if you can find an OG, Importantly, it is worth the cash whatever you pay.
