Review: Addmoro were a lesser known Los Angeles-based disco outfit active throughout the late 70s and early 80s, and their sound was unique for its ahead-of-its-time weight and phonk, not to mention a difficult-to-match versatility, both traits evidenced by this Kalita reissue of the obscurity 'Rock & Roll Skate' here, first released on their very own Addmoro Records. The titular A-sider and 'Keep On Tryin' were released originally in 1985, with the former coming as a ploddy but groovy hard-hitter - which could've easily predicted the reams of modern-day producers who would the style on for size decades later (but not quite achieve it so well) - and the latter a surprise-taking curveball in a stumbly-funky, disco-electro mood.

Review: In a meeting between generations of broken beat titans, Andrew Ashong and Kaidi Thatham's Sankofa Season rightly earned classic status soon after its release in 2020, and now we're being taken back into the heart of these tracks with a heavyweight remix package from some serious talent. Mala's imperious dubstep touch brings some low-end pressure to 'Low Ceilings' or Shy One chopping up 'Learning Lessons' in her peerless deft style, there's a lot of ground covered by this considered gathering of minds. Review: GC Cameron was born and raised in McCall Creek, Mississippi, and by the age of 22 he was already famous having joined Motown Records. He was signed up as lead singer of the legendary group The Spinners and had several web recover tunes and a few hits such as 'It's A Shame,' which was co-written and produced by Stevie Wonder. After that, Cameron left the group and went solo and teamed up with Harvey Faqua, Greg Crockett and Elgie Stover to record his best-ever work, which now makes its way onto this fine four-track EP courtesy of Soundway.

Review: Charles Green, who performed under the name Chas, released his debut album For Your Love on Love Joy Records in 1985. The album's soulful r&b accompanied Green's smooth vocals and heartfelt lyrics at the forefront. The album's title track was also released as a single and received some airplay on radio stations at the time and helped to establish Green as a promising new voice in the soul and r&b music scenes. Green went on to be a keyboardist for boogie, funk, soul and house releases such as Scott Grooves & Roy Ayers 'Expansions' in 1998 among others.

Review: A decade has now passed since Crossroads released their debut. The Italian duo has not released all that much in between, which is a shame since 'If You're In Need' - a cover of a disco-era soul staple made famous by Lenny Williams' soaring 1979 version - is genuinely terrific. Their take on the classic song is arguably best enjoyed in its 'Extended Mix' form, which blends authentic, 1970s style disco instrumentation (including sultry strings and the prominent piano stabs from Williams' version) with subtly beefed-up grooves, jazzy horn solos and subtle nu-disco flourishes. The remix is package is great, with a sublime, beat-free, full vocal version (the 'Acoustic' mix) being joined by a sublime, synth-sporting Young Pulse remix (another winner from the Parisian re-edit hero) and the groovy, effects-laden 'Call Me Dub'.

Review: William Devaughn's most famous song has been covered umpteen times over the years, in all kinds of styles, but sometimes nothing can beat the original. 'Be Thankful For What You Got' is just one of those universal messages, delivered in such smooth, engaging insistency you feel it from the first time you hear it. Now Demon Singles Club are pressing it up as a single backed with the equally excellent but perhaps less well-known 'Blood Is Thicker Than Water'. The 1974 track tracks the same groove as its A-side counterpart and offers up a different lyrical message on top - something you'd normally associate with reggae, but when the backing track is this perfect it translates very nicely over to soul too.

Review: The frankly named imprint Disco Records - surely you know what you're in for - return for their fourth release, continuing their specialty: editing rare and obscure disco gems from the 70s and 80s. It can't exactly be pinpointed as to who helms the label, but we're sure they're veterans of the Parisian disco scene, as a battle-scarred expertise is flaunted across four choice disco and funk numbers held close to this anonymous releaser's heart. Few of these would be baitheads' choices; and all are of the 'obscure and interesting' variety.

Review: The Demons Singles Club is back with more devilishly good funk here in the form of Doris Duke's version of Marlena Shaw's 'Woman Of The Ghetto.' It first appeared on her 1975 alum Woman and is a searing take with full-bodied vocals full of fire. It's an urgent sound that adds weight to the social commentary of the lyrics and the b-side tune from Rhyze is just as essential. 'Fire' is a massive disco cut with stomping drums, funky bass riffs and plenty of noodling guitar riffs that make it effervesce.

Review: Grammy award-winning jazz vocalist and much loved Chicago entertainer Kurt Elling has got a second album on the way soon - SuperBue arrives in Autumn - and has been building anticipation for it with a number of singles from it. This superb six track EP features special guest drummer Nate Smith as well as guitarist Charlie Hunter and has as classic feel that combines Eling's unique charisma and energy with his musical showmanship. All of the tunes are covers with a particularly fresh new version of Al Jarreau's 'Boogie Down' full of playfulness. This is another release that proves why Elling is so well regarded.

Review: It is fair to say that Demon Singles Club has another top nugget on vinyl here. 'Days Like This' by Shaun Escoffrey is a proper good slice of modern house music and it gets remixed here by top dogs Spen & Karizma, MJ Cole and DJ Spinna. This reissue of the 2002 original has been remastered by Phil Kinrade at Alchemy Mastering with the new remixes including the first-ever vinyl appearance of the MJ Cole contribution. There is lots to love in each of these with all of them being standouts and perfect for playing as the days warm up.

Review: A new four-track EP reflecting ever-expanded horizons for the band, 'Bloodline' is the latest output from loose-limbed, soul-stirring funk band Gabriels. Quickly finding fans in the likes of Elton John, Celeste, Paul Weller, Benji B, and Gilles Peterson, Gabriels should soon find plenty more on a record that could soundtrack a David Lynch epic; such is its drama, its suspenseful, late-night orchestral ruminations. Capped by frontman Lusk's voice - a weapon that swoops through the octaves breathlessly - Gabriels have that rare ability to make you re-evaluate music, and what it can do, in a heartbeat. Whilst Lusk provides the wow factor with that ridiculous larynx, Gabriels are very much a close-knit trio. Producer, keyboardist (and full-time video director) Ryan Hope hails from Sunderland but calls LA home. Fellow producer-composer and violinist Ari Balouzian, a man with endless musical projects on the go at any one time, gives Gabriels' songs a real 'feel' to them. Sultry, soulful mood music certainly isn't the band's modus operandi, but this new experimental EP should paint an altogether more rounded idea of where Gabriels are at today.

Review: Marvin Gaye's catalogue is jam-packed with gems and so it's not hard to pick a couple for remix treatment. This one is a particularly nice pair of alternative mixes that find the Detroit legend at his very best, taken from the Deluxe Edition of his masterful 1976 album I Want You, mixed by Kevin Reeves and now remastered by Ellen Fitton but never, before now, appearing on 12" before. First up on the A-side is 'I Wanna Be Where You Are', a cover of a Michael Jackson hit beautifully stretched from its original 1:17 to over six minutes. Luckily, those with their best interests at heart do the glorious work of repressing the tracks 'Over You' and 'Shining Through' - as well as their slightly different dance mixes - to EP-length wax. Review: The Leo Zero Edit Archive is here, you can safely assume, to serve up edits from the vast archives of Leo Zero. The first volume is a doozy that kicks off with 'Love Affair' - a lazy and low sung funk burner with noodling bass riffs and a glorious vocal full of happiness. 'Let Me Love U' has a yearning male vocal that is as lovestruck as they come over more leggy mid tempo beats. 'Easy Does It' is defined by its superb string stabs and rolling drums and 'For A Living' closes out with a more house learning disco beat that is fat and fantastic. We can't wait for more.

Review: Part of a fresh string of reissues of Love & Unity 12"s - one of many star aliases to grace the annals of South London reggae label Studio 16 - comes this headfirst collision between L&U and Seargent Pepper. Sharing similar instrumentals, 'I Just Don't Care' hears a blissful femme soprano glide elegantly across its bubblings - the instrumental is super well-rounded, sawn-off. On the B-side, meanwhile, there's Pepper's 'Cut From Master Tape', which hears Pepper toast the rhythm lackadaisically, as endlessly hazy dub effects resound and a janky double-time kick propels it all forward.

Review: Freestyle take us back to 1984 with this fully licensed 12" repress of a vital bit of intense disco heat from Midnight Energy. The New Jersey outfit really get their machines working overdrive on the A-side as they bring electro-boogie funk vibes to a tune that is something of a cult classic and rather expensive to find in OG form. 'Front Line' is a brilliantly sleazy one with lots packed in and then the flip side tune 'Saving All My Love' comes in two forms and both are full of big vocal hooks and percolating funk drums.

Review: Much loved soul, jazz and hip hop fusionists Moonchild are back on their home label Try Thoughts with another magnificent and widescreen album. Reflections builds on their sonic foundation with subtle evolutions in sound but plenty of the recognisable tropes that have made this outfit so well loved as they, inspired by their own Tiny Desk performance, revisit, rework and reimagine their old songs. There are acoustic versions of their hit singles and overall the record finds the laid-back LA based trio once again epitomise a mix of intricate, progressive musicality with a chilled out vibe.

Review: Disco re-edit master Moplen has been busy touching up this Jackie Moore gem with sprinkles of his studio magic. The original vocal remains in tact as the trumpets and funky drum breaks power forwards the groove below. A vocal mix makes more of the sublime soul tones and then come two further versions on the flip. The Breakdown remix is one of big breaks but nothing detracts from the lung busting performance of Moore. Last of all is a Chin-mental mix so you really have plenty to chose from.

Review: Philadelphia International Records continues to dip into its bulging archives and offer up double-packs containing some of the finest 1970s remixes from remix pioneer Tom Moulton. As you'd expect, there's plenty to get the juices flowing and the heart pounding on this third volume in the series. Record one opens up with Moulton's epic version of the O'Jays' "This Time Baby", a swirling Philly Soul classic that later became a favourite of sample-loving disco-house producers and disco re-editors, and continues with his sugary but floor-friendly version of the Futures' "Party Time Man". Over on record two, Moulton's inspired extension of Jean Carn's seductive "Love Don't Come Easy" is followed by his must-have version of the Jones Girls' "Nights Over Egypt".

A label / moniker seemingly dedicated to capturing the bustle and excitement of 80s-90s Paris, bottling it in disco-house music form, the likes of 'Falling Planet Earth' are glamorous ear-grabbers, the equivalent of bowling down a high-fashion Boulevard with a wad of cash in hand. Review: Freestyle delivers a gem from 1987 here with Purely Fizzycal's UK street soul sizzler 'Make A Move' , which was first released on their Pure Impact Productions label. Trish Langley of North London and Ash Kamat of South London first crossed paths in the mid-80s and came together over music with Kamat's programming and production inspired by London pirate radio sound of the time and and US influences like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis also colouring their sound. Langley's vocals, shaped by her parents' reggae collection and brother's taste for artists like Brothers Johnson, Maze, and Janet Kay, merged with Kamat's raw drum machine sounds in perfect easy as heard here with this irresistible 12".

Review: Way back in 1983, American musician Chris McCaa assembled a band and recorded one single as the Redhots - a dewy-eyed, AOR-leading Balearic ballad called 'If I Had To Say Goodbye'. At the time, McCaa slapped it on a 7", alongside the Brazilian-influenced jazz-funk sunshine of 'Bahama Rama' (another gorgeous, largely unknown gem), and released it himself. Mercifiully, it has been saved from obscurity (and eye-watering second-hand prices) by MISS YOU, who have decided to issue it on 12" for the first time. We get freshly remastered versions of both original tracks, alongside a gorgeous extended edit - created specifically with this release in mind - which ups the Balearic factor considerably. The resultant light-touch revision sounds like Chris Rea's Balearic classic 'Josephine', only miles better.

Review: This is a long overdue reissue of a lovely feel-good soul number from Sonja Richard. It is her one and only listed release on Discogs and landed back in 1987 on the Rock The House Records label. Why she didn't do more off the back of this one is anyone's guess but we wish she had: it's a lovely laid-back vibe with 80s electronic disco production, buffed metal chords, and naive melodies. As well as the standout original the flipside has a fine version that offers a slightly different look. A real must own for soul lovers.
