You Keep Coming Back

You Keep Coming Back (3:15)
My Little Someone (4:16)
Review: 100% Pure Poison were formed in 1974 by nine American soldiers based in West Germany. During a period of leave, they popped down to Cannes in France to perform, were spotted by EMI Records, and were flown to London to record what turned out to be their only album, Coming Right At You. The record flopped at the time, but has since become sought-after amongst Northern Soul collectors. The two tracks here are taken from that set, and appear on 7" for the first time since the '70s. A-side "You Keep Coming Back" is a near perfect, heartfelt soul anthem- think eyes-closed vocals, sustained horns and Motown harmonies - while "My Little Someone" is a slower, more impassioned cut destined to soundtrack tender moments.

Step Out (2:57)
Review: The brilliantly entitled 1619 Bad Ass Band covered myriad different styles from mellow sound to furious funk on their superlative and self-titled debut long player back in 1976. Two of it's standout tunes now get pulled and pressed on this red hot 7" from P-Vine, complete with a flip-back sleeve. That LP is a rare one amongst the famous TSG catalogue and first up from it is the mid-tempo dance gem 'Nothing Can Stop My Loving You' while on the flip there is the more heavy funk sound of 'Step Out' which anyone who has listened to any DJ Shadow will know he sampled.

Love Will Find Its Way (3:17)
Review: Slip into something comfortable and prepare to get sexed up by this new one from Newcastle's Six Nine Records. It features tracks by 3TOB, an outfit originally born in 2019 by band members of Tone and earlier in the year they dropped the sultry hip-hop, soul and r&b album Trading Places. Those tracks are "My Baby' and 'Love Will Find Its Way' and neither were on the album and have been streaming only up to now. They are a timeless fusion of heart-melting harmonies and silky beats for those loved up late night sessions.

Terrorize My Heart (Disco dub) (3:49)
Terrorize My Heart (Tall Black Guy Bounce remix) (3:44)
Review: The faultless Big Crown label revisits one of its biggest hits from back in 2016. New York City-based collective 79.5 is made up of seven musicians and singers and their gorgeous 'Terrorize My Heart' 45rpm reached some heart aching disco highs. Now it comes with in two new forms - the disco dub with its seductive drums and bass and airy, soulful vocal, and a remix from hip hop royalty Tall Black Guy. He deconstructs the tune and rebuilds it as a smoky, jazz tinged slow motion hip hop beat. The chords are warm and cuddly, the vocal is more meandering but still acts as the perfect icing on a delicious cake.

Club Level (Eli Escobar remix) (5:02)
Review: RNT welcomes Brooklyn-based band 79.5 to the family with the first single from their forthcoming eponymous LP. Soulful and psychedelic, the haunting melodies of Club Level float above a steady strutting rhythm section, punctuated by moaning baritone saxophone and drenched in washy reverb.

NYC mainstay Eli Escobar crafts a masterful remix that leans into 80s nostalgia, with a soundscape and arrangement nothing short of perfection.

7th Wonder - "Daisy Lady" (4:11)
Blackbusters - "Old Man" (4:25)
Review: 7th Wonder - "Daisy Lady" is such a special and in-demand tune that no matter how many times it gets reissued it always sells out. This latest pressing on Breaks & Beats is a hand-numbered and limited edition 7" that is backed with Blackbusters's 'Old Man'. It's a cosmic funk workout with some great synth magic drawn out and weaved into funky breaks with all the bells and whistles (literally.) But really that 7th Wonder jam is the one here with its pumping drums and lavish horn sections all making for a colourful and vibrant wedge of irresistible funk.

Bubble Gum (2:31)
Rule Of Mind (5:14)
Review: Dynamite Cuts is one of the most apply named labels of them all. Once again here it brings the serious funk heat on a tidy 7" from The 9th Creation. Both of these super sexy killers are taken from the mega rare Bubble Gum album and it's not hard to see why it has become such a highly sought after record. The title tune is only just over two minute long but has steamy spoken word vocals with Moog funk bass. 'Rule Of Mind' is longer at over five minutes, and the way the keys shimmy into your affections and the lead sax brings the lustre is second to none. What an EP.

Drake Punk (4:23)
Review: There is very little info out there about the Milkcrate Mondays label but we do know that their only other release last year was well hyped and quickly sold out. This second one is likely to follow suit. It comes from Able and is a dusty house cut with an old school feel thanks to the gentle breaks that power it along as a signature smoky soul vocal from Amy Winehouse brings plenty of emotion to a-side cut 'Winehouse Magic'. On the flip is 'Drake Punk' which pairs Daft Punk filter house loops with auto-tuned vocals all sure to bring some fun to the 'floor.

Dream Of A Lady (4:04)
Review: Athens Of The North continues to do God's work with another superb soul reissue. This one came originally from Waycross, Georgia and has been fully and officially licenced from original Ace in the Hole band member Michael George and Tim Gillans. The A-side 'What About Love' is the up tempo opener with plenty of spaced out and soaring melodies and a gorgeously steamy vocal up top next to the equal sultry sax notes. Flip it over and you will find 'Dream of a lady' which is equally killer but takes a slower and more downtempo tup though still with nice floating synths. It's a great yin to the A-side yang.

Stop Before You Lose Me (3:07)
Review: Soul fans are in heaven this month, just from the releases of Soul Direction alone. The label has been hard at work serving up plenty of golden nuggets and next in the spotlight is Joe Adams. 'That's Not Half Bad' is his stunning version of the Gene Woodbury classic. This is another lost tune that was found on a DAT tape recording made from material that was laying around in an old basement. It comes steeped in rich Philly soul and with gorgeous vocals that for us outshine the original. On the flip, it is backed with an equally sublime mid-tempo heart-wrencher for those tender moments.

Review: Adelle First luckily came up in the late '80s to early '90s tradition of cut-up house. 'Don't Give Up' is her defining moment; a precious South African disco piece that is unusually sensitive and detailed in disposition, and which features a brilliant dub mix on the B, that shows off every production aspect of this tried but true style with a startling sense of intricacy. First released in 1986, the flair of producer Tom Mkhize together with First's lolling vocals is once more put on display on this 2022 reissue.

Blame Game (3:48)
Review: New funk and soul grooves from Adesha and Vincent Kwok, the Italian vocalist and production duo responsible for a rain-made string of releases on Sleepers Records. 'Life's Too Short' and 'Blame Game' are infectious, talkboxing punchers; the former hears a muted guitar solo in its sultry breakdown, as if to say "don't be afraid of anything that stands in your way", while 'Blame Game' continues to deal with the tumult of difficult relationships, aiming to mood-set your next party with frank DX7 chords and 909s. This split single comes to a limited pink vinyl 7" and picture cover, and is limited to just 150 copies.

Review: Adesha and Vincent Kwok come together once more for a new transmission that takes its stylistic cues from "the glittering dance floors of the disco era to Minneapolis-inspired funk." These are lush tunes with gorgeous backing vocals, fine sax sounds and irresistible drums. First is 'Hot Mess' which is a classic disco workout with pumping drums and nice loos percussion under the soaring vocals and cosmic synth rays. 'Girl Fan' has a sizzling sax solo and describes the stages of fandom over punchy beats. This is the third collab from this pair on The Sleepers Record label.

It is the first time the band have ever gone into the studio to record a full live-band sound, playing together at Octagon Studios. Review: Of all of the tracks that seemed to define the soul, funk and disco revival lead by Floating Points and his co-run Melodies International label, it is the title track off this albumfrom Aged in Harmony. It was a real anthem for the multi-hour DJ sets at Plastic People, for his cult-ish NTS shows and the parties he played to record obsessives all over the world. And it's easy to see why - the steamy sax, the classy strings, the hooky bass motifs and the lovely drums. Review: Not just a beautiful compliment to pay someone special, but a hugely influential record that inspired Floating Points' now legendary Plastic People parties, too... A super obscure and expensive one at that. Now re-issued on Floating Points' own Melodies imprint - across three 45s - the Detroit band get full exposure with the deliciously funky main track enjoying two versions before dipping into the softer, more pastoral charms of "I Feel Like Dancing" and the string-led swoon festival, "Theme For Someone Special". We close on two contrasting grooves; an earthy ballad ("Trust Me") and a Whitfield & Strong style funk instrumental ("Dance Awhile"). Cheers Sam!

Akiko & Masayasu Tzboquchi - "Love Theme From Sparticus" (feat Mbanja Ritchy aka B-Bandj - Clear Day mix) (4:34)
Review: Tom Browne's 1980 single 'Funkin' For Jamaica' has long been something of an anthem - a hybrid funk/boogie classic that remains a staple in sets of hip-hop, disco and soul DJs alike. Given its ubiquity, covering the song is fraught with danger, but remarkably Japanese producer Akiko and guest vocalist Mbanja Richy have successfully put a new spin on it. Their take is subtly tougher and more synth-heavy, with bilingual French/English vocals, nods to Zouk music and a bassline so squelchy it could have been lifted from a P-funk record. Over on the flip, the pair go mellow, deep and laidback on a pleasingly skewed hip-hop soul cover of Terry Callier's legendary vocal interpretation of Alex North's 'Love Theme' from 'Spartacus'. Inspired stuff all told.

Review: Alanna Royale has been active in the funk and soul scene for quite a few years now, though her releases have previously been limited to a handful of self-released EPs and a sole album (recorded live and thrown out to raise funds for Puerto Rico hurricane survivors). Here she debuts on Transistor Sound, with Kelly Finnigan of label owners Monophonics handling production duties. "Go" is a great chunk of fuzzy, retro-futurist soul, with Royale's superb Alice Russell style vocal simply soaring above a bustling backing track rich in parping horns, skittish drum breaks and razor-sharp funk guitars. Royale remains in fine form on flipside "I Know", another distorted stomper of the sort that should excite both Northern Soul diehards and modern soul aficionados.

Review: With a full-length LP on the horizon, Nashville's own Alanna Royale has perfected a concoction of traditional 70s soul instrumental features with silky modern R&B vocals - and it works like you wouldn't believe. Everything from the classic trumpet-led grooves to the cover art is authentically soul, a long stray away from the band's grunge beginnings. If there's one way to start a revolution in your city, it's to create an incredible new sound like this. You will want to look for a rise in traditional soul elements in R&B and hip-hop over the next few years - if it explodes then you know who did it first.

Tricky Sticky Situation (4:00)
Review: A 90s lost soul gem, Aleshure is an anomaly in the modern age. Very little to no information exists about the songstress, but thanks to Stainless Soul Records head Mike Ward, this deep dive into the soul crate is being pressed for the rest of the world to hear on vinyl for what may be the first time. This is a two-sided affair (not to be mixed up by the label misprinting), with Side A's 'School Me' being a box-ticking disco-soul dance track contains everything you could possibly want from 90s soul-dance. Flip over to side B for a slow jam soul ballad 'Tricky Sticky Situation', a modern-day Romeo and Juliet story of yearning through a divide. Extremely limited and super rare, get your hands on this underappreciated 90s gem while you still can. Hopefully a sign of more to come from Stainless in the soul and dance department.

Review: Arthur Alexander was a cult 60s soul singer who toured the world and was popular here in the UK. He died suddenly of a heart attack at the peak of his powers and the fact he recorded his music so infrequently is still poured by fans, especially in what should have been his prime years as a singer and songwriter. He did lay down a few classics though, two of which are served up here by Kent. Review: Lee Alfred's 1980 disco classic 'Rockin - Poppin Full Tilting' fetches incredibly high prices on second hand vinyl markets, if you can even find one at all. It is one of only a couple singles the artist put out between 1980 and 1981. Here it gets a special one-sided 45rpm pressing with an extended version rolling on for six sumptuous minutes. Underpinined by a tight rhythm section and bubbly bass, the dazzling synth leads are all pixelated and cosmic, the female backing vocals add heat and the main voice of Alfred is all buttery and soulful.

Get Down On You (3:36)
Review: Bristol outfit the Allergies has enjoyed a hugely successful year so far, releasing a string of killer funk and soul sevens on Jalepeno Records. Astonishingly, "Entitled To That" could be their biggest single yet. Certainly, the title track is superb; a revivalist Northern Soul style stomper full of hazy horns, fuzzy guitars, sweaty drums and the kind of strong, empowered vocal that recalls some of soul music's greatest female singers. Wisely, there's a slightly more laidback feel about flipside "Get Down on You", where crunchy Clavinet lines wrap themselves around a snappy funk breakbeat. It's a fine tune, of course, but pales in comparison to the killer A-side. Regardless, this should be an essential purchase for funk DJs.

This Ain't No Game (Go! Go! Go!) (3:43)
Review: Heat Rock Records' latest double-dose of cut and paste madness is as incendiary as you'd expect, with both tracks adding elements of classic dancefloor workouts to fat beats and plenty of added percussion. Chicago's Altered Tapes handles side A, thrillingly re-imagining Dee-Lite classic 'Groove is In The Heart' by utilising more percussive elements (including a killer, cowbell-driven drum-break) from some of the tunes that the New York band originally sampled on their chart-topping house classic. B-Boys and B-Girls the world over will love it! On the flip, Bay Area native King Most combines the vocals from a Salsoul disco classic to a backing track that cleverly combines elements from a Ramsay Lewis style jazz number and a JB's-esuqe funk bomb.

Review: Some seriously dewy-eyed revivalist southern soul here from Daptone's superb Penrose sub-label. It comes courtesy of The Altons, a blue-eyed soul band from Maryland whose debut album on Mango Hill, In The Meantime, is well worth your attention. Neither of these two slow and emotive songs are featured on that set, but they'd fit right in. A-side 'When You Go (That's When You Know)' is impressively heartfelt and languid, with jazzy guitars, sustained Hammond organ chords and a laidback, early '6-s style soul groove underpinning sugary group harmony and lead vocals. Flipside 'Over & Over' is a slow and heart-wrenching break up song that's arguably even more impactful. Impressive stuff.

Adjacent to the local jazz club's neon signage comes the blissful harmonies of Bryan Ponce and Adriana Flores on 'Tangled Up In You', a hurtful song that carries with it a tinge of psych rock. Review: Russian funk alert! Following in the footsteps of fellow country funkers STiX and The Soul Surfers, DJ Anatoly Ice and veteran songstress Dariya deliver two impeccable jams that sizzle with a fuzzy air of 60s nostalgia. Dariya's vocal delivery is crisp, clear and decidedly sexy as she dips into her mother tongue for very brief respites. With punctuated pianos, big swinging drums and a horn ensemble that's tighter than an austerity budget, this is an exemplary lesson in funk.

Freedom (Mr. Confuse remix) (3:42)
Review: It's been almost four years since we last heard from Anatoly Ice and Dariya, and we were beginning to miss the duo's magnetic waves of seductive nu-soul. Backed by a gentle sway of breakbeats, "Freedom (Unchained)" is the sort of tune that will have cross-cultural appeal, drawing in influences from pop, r&b, and even a little country love. On the flip, Mr Confuse twists the groove up to transform the original into more of a light-hearted house swelter, backed by the original's suave vocals.

Review: Cannonball celebrate the big two-oh with this delightful find of an original take of Gaye's seminal "Inner City Blues". Famously covered by Gil Scott Heron and Grover Washington Jr, here the legacy continues as the Italian collective rebooted John's recording with their own subtle instrumentation. With a full studio version on the Take side and rawer, floor-hitting funk finish on the Acetate side, we guarantee this will make you want to holler...

You're My Life (3:35)
Review: Ruby Andrews recorded 'It Takes Me Away' many years ago at the celebrated Zodiac studios. Apparently she didn't think it was up to much back then but when MD Recordings got in touch and told her otherwise she was happy to get it out there. It has been remastered for the occasion and pairs authentic soul history with lo-fi production, big horns and an acrobatic vocal that will have you in a spin in no time. 'You're My Life' is a more dubbed out and slow motion soul viber.

Horace Andy - "Fever" (3:47)
Im & The Agg - "The Flue" (2:04)
Review: "Fever" is one of Horace Andy's biggest hits. Amazingly, it has never been given its own release so Studio One has done the right thing and put it out on a super loud 12" for the first time. It first landed way back in 1973 before Andy rose to contemporary fame appearing with Massive Attack on five of their albums, but still hits hard. The lush vocals sit well in the swinging drums and bass, and makes it a sure fire dance floor destroyer that won't hang around. Comes accompanied with a Cedric "Im" Brooks instrumental version on the flip.

Wish I Didn't Miss You (remix) (4:17)
Review: Oooh! Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. It also inspired countless official and under the counter remixes with Blaze's perhaps the most recognisable. So yes this reissue on 7" from Outta Sight is worthy if you don't have the original in your collection and features a housed up remix from Hex Hector on the flip.

Broke Down Piece Of Man

Broke Down Piece Of Man (2:55)
Four Walls Of Gloom (2:12)
Review: Soul4Real has gotten 'soulful for real' with this third outing, coming through in the form of 2 previously unreleased gems from US band The Anglos. This is some pretty niche gear, what with the band having only put out a handful of 7s back in the 60, so it feels like a special occasion to have some new material from them on our shelves. These tunes were apparently destined to land on the Botanic imprint back in the day, and are famously produced and engineered by the great Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams, which is why they have a certain roughness that is rarely heard on other soul records. "Broke Down Piece Of Man" is a fast, beat-heavy number with a psychedelic edge that reflects the state of mind back then, while "Four Walls Of Gloom" takes the gospel tradition as its main ingredient, offering a wonderfully uplifting midtempo rocker for the heart and soul.

Indicut (instrumental) (2:40)
Review: Mexico-based duo Apocrifo serve up their debut single 'Indicut' with LA hip-hop and soul virtuoso Georgia Ann Muldrow on the vocal. This outfit is made up of producer Kefren Rivera and percussionist Carlos Huitro and they plenty of jazz, hip hop and electroacoustic elements into a unique sound that is exemplified here. The track is a broody, lo-fi world of sound with hip-hop beats and the yearning jazz vocals of Muldrow adding to the effect next to sombre piano chords. The instrumental strips everything back to the killer beats. This is a great first offering from this outfit who surely have plenty more to come.

Review: Fresh early 70s Cali soul, Edward 'Apple' Nelson and his citrus compadres self-released this on their own Sagittarius imprint back in 1971.Highly limited, it never got the justice it deserved... Until now. Thanks to Jazzman we can now enjoy the positive licks and charms of northern soul-fave "Love Brings Out The Best Of You" and get all reflective and romantic with "My Baby" as if they were recorded and released yesterday. Fruity.

Checking Out The Way I Feel (6:43)
Review: Whenever Yvonne Archer's 'Ain't Nobody' comes up as a reissue it shifts, and quick. The Jamaican vocalist is a queen of feelgood vocals, here mixing both disco and reggae influences. The original 'Ain't Nobody' is a gloriously upbeat rework with the heart aching vocal over swaggering drums and nice raw claps. This special 12" reissue comes backed with the fantastic 'Checking Out The Way I Feel'. It is an elastic groove with big, languorous horns up top and the sort of reggae keys that bring the heat. When paired with the A-side it makes for a devastating 12".

Review: The Mighty Zaf and Mark GV Taylor are the deep digging pair behind BBE's such loved Americana compilation from 2014. Now they are back unearthing the goods on this tasty 7". Arthur released only one solo album but its was packed with gold. This single is from it and is a pure blue eyed soul with sweet licks from guitarist Dean Devener and whimsical vocals from Maye Cavallaro. Future Force's 'Reincarnation' was originally the B-side of NYC pop and funk outfit Future Force's only ever single. It's a groovy, funk laced and disco tinged roller.

As Meninas - "Redondo Sambao" (2:24)
Jorginho Telles - "Brasileiro" (3:02)
Review: You always know what you are going to get from Mr Bongo's Brazil 45 series and that is pure fire in musical form. This 100th release suggests the label has no intention of slowing down nor is it running low on top source material. This one from As Meninas on the A-side has beautiful female vocal-group arrangements with flutes that soar up top and plenty of ass-shaking samba shuffles down low. It's a tune that oozes soul and charm and was first released back in 1967. It's a super sweet but short song that is backed with 'Brasileiro' on the flip. It's taken from Jorginho Telles' self-titled 1971 album on Copacabana Records and mixes up raw guitar sounds with r&b vibes into something unusual and alluring.

Review: Clap City is dropping some next-level heat right now for those who like their soul super sweet. This particular 7" - which comes with a booklet - is a reissue of Aswads' delightful 'I'm So Proud'. It is very much defined by its glorious male falsetto vocal, which is aided by some acoustic guitars and subtle but dramatic drumming that rises and falls to accompany the emotional roller coaster of the vocal line. Things sped right up for the high-speed funk case that is The Naturall Band's tight and intense 'There Was' on the flip. An absolute must-cop.
