Review: On this latest drop on EPM, the steadfast UK techno label welcomes steadfast UK techno titan Mark Broom for a collaboration with Australian in Berlin Patrik Carrera. The result is four slices of no-nonsense jackhammers from two experts in the field, leading in with the edgy loops and bludgeoning kicks of 'Kos' and neatly stepping over to the shoulder-shaking pressure of 'ZZZZ'. 'Track 4' features one of those deadly chord stabs which just lands squarely between the eyes, while 'F9' rides the cymbals mercilessly and keeps an abundance of funk in the low end - pure dancefloor dynamite in action from two well-versed detonators.

Review: O! Kult was a post-punk and industrial band from Yugoslavia that was active in the 1980s. Like many of their peers at the time, they were censored by the communist party that was in charge but that didn't stop them from making music and gaining a cult following. Their cut 'Zvestoba' has been found in old Radio student archives and brought back to life here and then remixed by modern luminaries Silent Servant, Christian Kroupa (who is one half of Black Dot) and 198319831983. They add weighty tech, EBM and moody electro vibes to make for a strong package.

Review: Osaka's Koshiro "YPY" Hino built his reputation on a series of fearlessly experimental cassette releases, before breaking cover to deliver a 12" of frazzled techno on Nous last year. Zurhyrethm marks his long-form vinyl debut, and contains eight suitably experimental tracks stretched across two slabs of wax. While there are clear tropical influences, a humid feel and nods towards the visceral pleasures of ambient, Hino's greatest strength is his eccentric drum programming. Zurhyrethm's dense - but often subtly mixed - percussive backing dominates throughout, with nods to African and South American rhythms, Sweet Exorcist's C.C.CD-era "clonk techno" (look it up), and the metallic clanking of classic industrial music.

Review: M Parent's penchant for texture is laid bare on this searing and arresting new EP for Zement. It opens with 'Gravel Pit' which sounds like an audio diary from a car-wrecking plant. Twisted metal, fizzing battery acid, and crushed glass all feature over a distorted baseline and broken rhythm. Those same scuzzy sounds define the rest of the EP from the acid-laced 'Ideal Future' to the coruscated funk of 'Acid Thirst' via the caustic intensity of closer Climb These Walls'. An impressively unique offering that very much has its own singularly sound palette.

Review: Modular techno maestro and Freerotation big cheese Steevio is on fine form on "Zephyr", his first EP of 2019. He kicks things off with "Brawd", where undulating electronic motifs and faintly foreboding snatches of melody wind their way around a rolling techno groove, before offering up a swinging, off-kilter take on tropical techno rich in darting minor key melodies and jazzy sub-bass. Turn to the flip and you'll encounter two more chunks of modular dancefloor hypnotism: the slowly shifting, head-in-the-clouds throb of "Cysuron" and the melodious but off-kilter tech-jazz flex of hard-to-pigeonhole EP highlight "Rhyddid".

Review: Aussie duo Echo Inspectors join forces with yet two more cretive forces of nature, Subset and Prince Morella, to deliver 'Youthman' - in the artist and label's words - a "slung dubbed out, rootz laiden steppa". The dub influence rings as clear as a translucent glass bell that's just been peeled off the blowpipe; the track's vocalist, Morella, has already worked with Lee Perry, King Tubby and Scientist, so this is certainly a collaboration for those willing to follow the threads of dub as a lineage into dub techno. The original is slow and pacey enough - with Morella singing of broken barriers and Babylons - but it's the organic-atmos remix from Biodub that really takes the cake for us, with its daring additions of swing and future garage influences.

Review: Here's a big old belter on that biggest of techno fortresses, Drumcode. On this two-track slammer, Adam Beyer and Bart Skils' monster track 'Your Mind' gets revisited by New York up and comer Charles D. After releases on Say What? and Pryda, D is able to show off his skills twice over, on the A-side living up to the billing of the 'Epic mix' of 'Your Mind' by bringing in the big, swelling pads that can fill a stadium and get hands raised aloft. On the flip, the 'Acid Line' version unsurprisingly brings a little 303 action into the mix, and makes sure the undercarriage is a thunderous juggernaut of supersized techno.

Review: The seemingly ever-present underground stalwart that is Ellen Allien's Bpitch Control welcomes Berlin-based artist ASEC for a new EP that is inspired by "the indecision, the fear and the finality of making difficult choices. Heavy stuff for sure, and opener 'Crossing The Rubicon' sure is a dark and moody piece but also utterly danceable. The title track has a blunt, powerful kick and whirring machine percussion then 'Our Light In Momentary Troubles' gets a little more dubby, with fat bass and chunky drums. Last of all is 'Bleep Test (Tool Mix)' which is a brain-boggling and loopy techno cut with fizzing synth textures.

Review: Amid a ton of releases on the likes of Wrong Island and CPU in recent months, the legendary recovering optimist Automatic Tasty now flings a full album upside our faces. Review: Those who've been paying close attention will know that Alex 'Omar' Smith has been mixing things up musically of late, veering away from the deep Detroit house he's famed for in order to explore a wider range of influences. New album "You Want" doesn't exactly reverse this trend, but it is far more rooted in his particular brand of seductive, off-kilter deepness and techno-tinged hypnotism than recent singles. That's undeniably a good thing, because nobody does crunchy, machine driven club jams better than the Motor City producer. There are nods towards Italian style piano house, disco, broken beat, jazz funk, Masters at Work and - more surprisingly - industrial techno (see the filthy closing cut) - but the resultant cuts don't sound like anything other than tried-and-tested Omar-S club jams.

Review: Midland has been smart about his arc as a producer, taking his time rather than churning out releases for the sake of it. As such, when we do get something new from the lad, it always feels like an occasion, and of course the music invariably matches the mood. 'You Never Take Me Dancing' is in fact the B-side opener on this new four-track record, but it plays out like the lead role on an EP bursting with fresh ideas. 'Strangers On The Train' toys with more experimental synthesis and a stripped back mix down that takes its cues from footwork, while 'Drift Into The Algorithm' plays out as the slinkier, shimmering house he's perhaps been better known for of late. The class and consideration just spills out of this record - more than worth waiting for.

Review: It is impossible to pin down Roman Flugel. The German innovator has had more different sounds and aliases than most of us have had disco pellets. Here he is back under his own name on Berlin mainstay Rekids with four to-the-point yet still characterful techno cuts. 'Yes People' with both amp up the energy in the club but also trip out all those who hear it thanks to its caustic drums and mind-melting synths. 'Play Simple' is a double time weapon with spoken words morphing before your ears next to an insistent rhythm and sleek pads. 'Jam' is a wonky one with detuned chords tumbling about the mix over old school techno directness and 'Mysterious Delight' again cuts loose at the afters. This may be his best work in some time.

Review: San Fran's unstoppable and enduring tech house craftsman John Tejada is also super reliable. His sound is well established, but he always does enough with each new release to embellish it a little further. Returning now to his home label of Kompakt, he refines his palette to silky melodies, fuzzy pads and crisp beats that are superbly pleasing for both your ears and your heels. 'Sheltered' is a particularly classy cut of deft tech minimalism, 'Spectral Progressions' expires ambient broken beats with lush pad work and 'Panacea' picks up the pace in scintillant fashion. This might be his best work in years.

Review: Container is a long-running project from Ren Schofield but he has hasn't released anything since back in 2021 when he delighted techno heads with his Creamer EP. His manic sound has recently taken him to some sold out shows around the world and now comes Tacker, a new album that fuses rock with electronic stylings on Alter. Review: Those who know, know how strong the Dutch electro scene has been since the early 90s and Netherlands label BAKK has a special compilation here with many excellent electro tracks to enjoy - no less than 11 tunes in total, spread across three pieces of wax. The list of artists is impressive, from Legowelt, Antenna, SFV Acid and more. This pack starts off with a stunner called 'Bos Ochtendmist' by Legowelt, a phased out and radiant futuristic theme song that's just downright beautiful! Rather than imitating any other city's history of the style's, these artists have their own style - see Aurora Halal's 'Spiral' as a great example, or Sfv Acid 's 'Urbanfury' which adds some nice IDM influences. The slow and deep bass on Tala Drum Corps's 'Gargoyle' is killer too. An early candidate for best electro comp of the year 2024.

Review: Londoner Otik has been about for a long while now, but his Aus Music debut signals some serious tack-change when it comes to putting true respect on the name of an artist who deserves it. 'Xoul Trap' not only references a Skyrim game mechanic, but delivers four Uk-funky-ish dream-heaters to either quench or ignite the soul, depending on one's inclinations in the dance. The haunting vocal chops and thunderous kicks of the title track, the shuffling chords and speaker-rattling subs of 'Temptress', the washed-out synthesis and pumping 4/4 of 'Inertia,' and the shimmering UK Funky inspo of 'Unorthodox' render this a solid top-up to the rep of UK dance music on the international stage.

Review: While NPM's first release, which dropped earlier this year, was a classical-tinged drone EP courtesy of Giulio Aldinucci, this follow-up from Brighton-based Mause explores a simultaneously melodious, skittish, picturesque and acid-fired sound that sits somewhere between ambient techno, IDM and Rephlex-style "braindance". He first opts for a deep and beautiful sound on the thoughtful 'LocriLogAcid Seq', before ratcheting up the tempo (and minor key melodies) on the sprightly 'SeqtuningMLogAcid'. Over on side B, 'Strimsang (Beacon 4)' bustles, bubbles and spits impressively to avoid easy categoriziation, while 'Sunday Multi Acid Seq20d' is high-grade IDM/ambient techno fusion that reminded us a little of Holovr's similarly 90s-inspired works.

Review: Matt Edwards aka Radio Slave's Rekids label is back with something a bit different here: it is a debut release from Serbian duo XL Traxx who show off their fierce and jacked-up analogue sounds across three bangers. 'M-Bomb' is the early standout with a classic Chicago house vocal over raw, hard-hitting drums surely made with some proper outboard gear. 'E-Dancer' then offers the sort of loopy synth energy you would expect from a tune with such a name and then the bouncy house and catchy finger clicks of 'D-Edge' have slightly deeper vibes.

'Xilo' is an adventurous main room workout that sets the scene perfectly before the direct execution of 'Efien' a slamming tribal techno tool mixed with gnarly acid squelch. Review: Here's some fresh techno from Intercepts, a new project dropping three slabs of hi-def, immersive club material from three different un-named artists for adventurous souls. 'Track 1' moves at a slower tempo and deals in fractured rhythms, all the better to carry the huge swathes of atmospheric sound design. 'Track 2' rolls with a deceptive discoid funk which contrasts neatly with the looped up Berlin techno-friendly elements. 'Track 3' takes things even further out into experimental - but still rhythmical - territory, marking Intercepts out as a label with a strong sense of adventure and their own distinctive way of merging influences into something which may well tickle your ear drums.

Review: Waage is a firm favourite amongst dub techno fans. The Icelandic producer has long been turning out icy and atmospheric rollers for the heads and here he works alongside a fresh name, Quantal, who is sure to go on to big things. Here they land on Thule Records, a legendary label in its own right with roots going back to 1995. They kick off with the textured dub of 'WQ1' which has glitchy sounds paying over the rolling drums. 'WQ2' is much more smooth and streamlined, with an underwater current that sweeps you off your feet, then 'WQ3' leans into the wind with hypnotic techno drums and vamping chords that melt the mind. Last of all comes 'WQ4', a timeless dub with infinite horizons and the most frictionless drum loops.

Review: It's been a long time coming, but finally Beatrice Dillon has delivered her debut album - and it's a peach. It sees her "Workaround" a set rhythmic idea - 150 BPM percussive polyrhythms influenced by various global drumming styles - to create a suite of tracks rooted in bass-heavy UK style "broken techno" but vastly different in tone and style. Thanks to a range of impressive guest musicians (techno experimentalists Batu and Laurel Halo both contributed alongside veteran jazz players, one of Britain's best bhangra drummers and a cellist), there's a fantastic hybrid electronic/acoustic vibe throughout, with Dillon's experimental instincts combining with her grasp of mood and melody to create a suite of impossible-to-pigeonhole tracks that genuinely sound like nothing else around. Review: Dutch artist Tammo Hesselink has always played with rhythm whatever style of music he makes. He does that again here with a new EP - his debut for the Midgar label out of Berlin - that showcases his stripped-back style over five fresh cuts. Opener 'Zero History' has loopy beats and a moody atmosphere that's dark but alluring then 'Nut Wandel' is another heady and hypotonic cut with undulating bass and deft sound designs while the flipside features a trio of variations on that theme - sleek rhythms and evocative little details that draw you in deep. These might ostensibly be DJ tools, but they sure do elevate a dancefloor in sophisticated ways.

Review: When you call your label The Purist you pretty much lay out your statement of sonic intent from the off. This second outing is another one that offers up unabashed cosmic tech from the depths of some distant universe. Muzin is the artist at the helm and 'Woone' opens up with mind-melting synths and linear beats that will appeal to fans of the likes of Jeff Mills and Luke Slater. 'Kiln' gets more intense but still makes an art form of intertwining synths and drums to languid effect and 'Parsel' then has a more minimal design but equally heady impact. Review: After first surfacing digitally late last year, Matisa's Steel City Dance Discs label debut finally makes it onto vinyl - and not a moment too soon. Hard to pigeonhole but fiendishly heavy and floor-friendly, the four cuts on offer are rave-igniting workouts that somehow manage to sound both nostalgic and genuinely fresh. For proof, check opener 'Brillatine', where a warped, all-action bassline, fizzing electronics, Orbital-style female vocal snippets, jumpy stabs and pots-and-pans percussion hits cluster around a skittish, warehouse-ready breakbeat. 'Eyeliner' is a slightly more rave-centric chunk of heady breakbeat hardcore revivalism with added M1 organ motifs (and a rap-less accompanying hip-house style tweak from label boss Mall Grab), while 'Lip Plumper' is a muscular, hands-aloft house workout with layered percussion aplenty.

Review: One Eye Witness is mostly known for doing reissues of treasured 90s breakbeat, techno and trance under the name Kalahari Oyster Cult but this outlet under their name is for new music. Similar to the previous, the fifth edition is a compilation with submissions from different artists around the world. Starting out the EP is the Montreal producer Priori with the very atmospheric 'Weight'. Those who follow the label, know that every release will get a bit of trance and sure enough, Eversines deliver with wicked 'Vigilance'. For the second side, the 'Bustlin' Monk' by O Fourtyfour, bounces along with a trippy, broken, electro groove. Lastly, 'J2PX' by Reflex Blue is a sick, robotic funker that we expect to get a lot of attention by those who get this record. You can always expect some excellent music from One Eye Witness.

Review: Some of Europe's finest purveyors of underground sounds come together on this fourth rase from the One Eye Witness label out of the Netherlands. Asphalt DJ kicks off and lays out a steamroller of a techno banger in 'Blades' which is pulsing, hard hitting but supple. RDS gets for a much more minimal and cosmic vibe on the tight and bouncy 'TH Only' then Ste Roberts brings some machismo and texture to 'Tune Pitch Decay' with its industrial tech aesthetic. Tammo Hesselink closes down the EP with the loose and bendy tones, scattered hits and late night minimal eeriness of 'Untitled 42.'

Nicola Dal Sacco is behind this one with opener 'Wirrwarr' layering in bright tartan chords to deep linear drums. He has served up another full length's worth of sublime deep dub techno explorations here, and that marks his rather remarkable 36th full length in total. Winter Constellations is inspired by the Canadian's love of star gazing and the vastness of space and results in plenty of widescreen and cinematic tracks that are subtly detailed with celestial moods. From the power of 'Let's Forget Who We Are' to the infinite depth of 'Auriga' via the airiness of 'Night Sky Dreaming' and 'Horologium', this is another masterfully immersive work that really exploits the album format.

Review: James Pennington remains one of the cult veterans of Detroit's techno legacy, right there at the beginning and wholly revered by those across his work. Even if he still exists a little on the fringes compared to some of his peers, releases like this remind you how respected he is, and for good reason. 'Winds Of Fear' just hits that balance between the true, deep-rooted, classic kind of techno and the otherness which makes the best of the genre memorable instead of forgettable. The trombone-like synth line forming the melodic bedrock of the track is just not something you hear often in techno, but it sounds powerful especially on top of the rough, urgent slap of the Suburban Knight drums. As if the original wasn't enough, we get Robert Hood going in on the track with a tight but funky as hell edit and a dusty beatdown version from Eddie Fowlkes. Legends, assemble!

Review: Hector Oaks is one of the most trusted stamps of authority in big, bashy techno, and his label is a natural extension of his knowledge and taste. As such, you're going to want to pay attention to this new release, which revolves around some ear-snagging samples chatting about players playing themselves. It's a hip-hop rooted attitude which extends into the funky cuts juicing up 'Player Three', while 'Player Twenty-Five' turns up the pressure with some loopy madness and then jacks 'Player Three' up by '8%' for those who like it faster. Review: Marco Bailey is a Belgian DJ and producer who's remained active since the late 90s - his commitment to a hard and assembly-liney industrial techno sound has seen him lend his chops to the likes of Drumcode, Intec, and MB Elektronics in later years. 'Wild Out' is an EP brought to Fundaments, and best represents the artist's latest headspace: wild as ever. Highlights include 'Careless Spectrum', which isn't afraid of indunging higher-end, leady trance tropes, and 'Royal Resistance', which once again mixes bright bursts of stabbing sheen into a gritty techno backbone. The latter track hints at developing the motif more, but smartly pulls back, leaving us panting, begging for more.

Review: When composing the tracks featured on his first release on Anthony Naples and Jenny Slattery's Incienso imprint, Mister Saturday Night and Vanity Press alumnus James Bangura reportedly drew inspiration from long, late-night teenage driving experiences. There's certainly a 'speeding through canyons under a blanket of stars' feel to 'Barred Entry', a hypnotic techno journey rich in restless kick-drums, hissing ride cymbals, hazy organ loops and delay-laden chords. He flips the script on 'Mixed Signals', delivering a dubbed-out slab of mind-mangling breakbeat house hedonism, before blurring the boundaries between high-octane electro and breathless techno on 'Monterrey'. To round things off, he adds reverb-heavy ambient textures and yearning synth-strings to a crunchy dub techno groove on EP standout 'Wichita'.

Review: Arutani's third album Who We Used To Be is a meditation on times passed and alternate lives lost, filtered through the decorative lenses of deep, minimal, tech and dub. As if to paint a character portrait of the artist himself, this is a measured, calm, light, mindful and modest album, replete with bulging concave chord undulations and synaptic percussive snaps for balance. Everything from electro's usual dotted rhythmic pattern to progressive house's woodblocky felicities are checked off here, plus the glissando'ing lead on 'In Case You Wondered What I've Been Doing' is a special highlight.

Review: Benny Rodrigues is Rod20 and boy has he been busy this year. He started his own self title label to put out some of the 1500 tracks he said he recorded during the lockdown. They all pay homage to techno's functional roots and were made using analogue hardware - always just one specific synth from a selection including Korg Monopoly, Yamaha DX100, Roland Jupiter 8 and others, along with his 909. This is the ninth EP in just a matter of months and they are all brilliant - pure, potent, head melting, high functioning techno with no fads but plenty of character.

Review: Roy Of The Ravers takes a break from his mischievious outings on Acid Waxa et al to lay down some of his braindance tackle on Emotional Response. White Line Sunrise II.I (Le Roy Soleil) can rightly be considered a follow-up to White Line Sunrise II and indeed it represents a similar kind of spectrum of electronica. Roy's sound is edging further into the kind of 'artist' territory where slower, softer tracks, odd vocal diversions and some pop sensibilities merge with the acid, electro, breakbeat and other well-established tropes of his sound. It's the kind of record which could easily broach this quirky fringe operator of UK electronics to a broader fan base, and there's no doubt he's got the melodic, emotional heft on tracks like 'Versace 101624' to get everyone on board.

Review: Roy Of The Ravers may be best known for his lysergic rave pelters, but there's always been a hint of grandiose melancholy in his synth work that suggested there was more to the machine botherer than tear-out acid beats. Emotional Response worked with the artist in trawling through a vast archive of material recorded between 1997 and 2017, rescued from hard drives once thought lost, and now gathered as a compelling ambient release with the full fat hardware veneer of Roy's work to date, but coming from a more reflective angle. From cathedral-quaking drones to deeply submerged aquatic excursions, this album has plenty to draw you into the inner world of an acid hero.

Review: White Fetish X, the latest release by enigmatic collaboration between Dataintrang and Luke Eargoggle on the Italian label Pareidolia Recordings, is a hypnotic and eerie exploration of the dark side of electronica. The album's six tracks veritably pulsate with a sinister energy, blending elements of EBM, electro clash, and sci-fi to create a truly unique and unsettling soundscape. 'Starting Shift' sets the tone with its menacing EBM stomp and early techno sound, while 'Mann Gegen Mann' ups the ante with its sinister electroclash beats. The title track is a hypnotic and eerie soundscape, with its sci-fi synths and demented, horror-like atmosphere. Review: Dealing with grief can be very tough. Many find that having a creative outlet proves useful. That's certainly the case for Seven Hills Records' regular Thee J Johanz, who wrote this EP while coming to terms with the death of his mother. Interestingly, it's not a particularly melancholic affair - it's too dancefloor-focused for that - but there's certainly a lot of emotion to be found amongst the chords, melodies and motifs. The standout, for us at least, is opener 'Where Goes Your Soul', where sharp, rising and falling electronic motifs ride a surging acid bassline and bustling machine drums. 'Two C Bee' sees him wrap wild, high-pitch acid sounds and bubbly, sequenced synth sounds around a chunky house beat, while 'Analex' is a formidably psychedelic slab of beat-free ambient exploration.

Review: Drumcode don't just do huge-room heaters, you know. 'When The Lights Go Down' is a strong case for the label's darker side, seeing to a generous three-track contribution from Neapolitan producer and DJ Roberto Capuano. The artist eschews an overindulgence in detuned trance saws for reese basses here, preferring to revel in the wealths of space offered by repeated kick drums and large reverberative spaces - as opposed to high-endy, sizzly sounds. The title track is the star, thanks to its riveting vocal line and guard-throwing rhythmic messups, which occur at the same time.

Review: Skyark has gone big with this latest release. It is an over 11 minute epic called 'When It Rains It Pours' that plays out like a serene electronic trip. It is always not he move and pairs ambient pads with lo-fi fuzz. bubbling synths with thunder clouds, sprinklings of percussion and subtle rhythms. On the flipside is six minute rework, the Eternal Injection Underwater Deep dub, which is more direct but still super heady with its floating cosmic pads and minimalism rhythms. We arent too sure who this artist is but we shall certainly be keeping an ear out for them in future.

Review: Wibo Lammerts is W1BO and he sadly and suddenly passed away back in mid-August 2022. He had worked with this label on his debut album over the course of the last two years. He had always said the long player would be his legacy and that turned out to be all too true. With the support of Wibo's family, U-TRAX is doing what is right and putting out the album in his honour. When Humans Ruled The Earth is a complete and coherent electro overview across 11 visceral tracks. There are acid lacerations, jacked-up cyborg bangers and elastic drum workouts wired up with scintillating synths.

Review: TV Hill Records starts things off rough and curiosity-rousing, with a technical itch from OG AG (Andrew Grant) in collaboration with fellow producer Dimneonsum. A mid-paced deep techno calculator, 'What's Up Everybody' pares back any semblance of emotion for pure robotic urgency, with every sound moving in juddering clockwork lockstep in an abstracted world of pure, preservative mathematic topology. Opener 'San Fran' pits nervous FM loops against an equally anxious Shepard-tonal riser, while calmer moments such as the beatless 'Drakey' still disquiet with their eerie glassiness. One for the bleepy heads, the only humanistic element is the revelatory vocal sample on 'Found Out'.

Review: The highly respected and busy ARTS label has released their latest What Will Remain When We're Gone by Paul Roux. The title track is a melodic burner that succeeds triumphantly with heavy percussion, anthemic crescendos and at a blistering pace. Amazing! 'Burning' is a fantastic as well. Dramatic and engaging, we love the way it favors melody over the supporting rhythm giving it a more atmospheric sound. On the B-side, 'Maybe It's Love' adds some soft-spoken female singing to it giving us strong 2000s era flashbacks. This is a really strong and perhaps underrated 12". Give this the opportunity to play through and you will want to revisit these often. ARTS continues to come through with excellent techno.
