Review: There are an awful lot of great records in the J Dilla's catalogue, but few can match the consistent quality and coherent construction of Welcome 2 Detroit, his 2001 breakthrough album. Designed as a love letter to his home city with a sample palette and blend of styles to match, it saw the late producer and a string of then largely unknown local MCs showcase their vocal talents over some of his best ever beats. This lusciously expansive 20th anniversary box set does a brilliant job in expanding on the original album, with the 12 included "45s" pairing vocal mixes with instrumentals, unreleased cuts and occasional remixes. The included hardback book is brilliant, too, and packed with first-hand accounts of the creation of a now iconic LP.

Review: It may come with an eyebrow-raising price tag, but what's on offer here is undeniably alluring: a box set of 10 seven-inch singles containing all of the songs from Louie Vega's brilliant Expansions In The NYC album - an all-star affair in which the Masters at Work man celebrated his love of New York disco, boogie and house. The album itself is incredible, with fantastic musicianship, arrangements and vocals, while the cast list - which includes original electrofunk outfit Unlimited Touch, Peech Boys main man Bernard Fowler, Honey Dijon, Cindy Mazelle, Moodymann, Kerri Chandler and his son Nico - is similarly impressive. It's a great product, packed with brilliant music: a fitting finale to this portion of the ongping 'Expansions NYC' project.

The first two tracks tackle the one time King of Pop, while the undisputed soul god that is Marvin Gaye then gets some special treatment with an Underboss remix of "I Want You." The smooth grooves continue on DeBarge's "I Like It" (Soul Synopsis mix), which is pure sultry and steamy gold. Elsewhere Eddie Kendricks - "Body Talk" (TBG mix) is a string laced and slow motion disco funk gem and Sister of Love and Jackson 5 also get some careful treatment.

The pack comes in the form of his alias, Mr. K, and you'll seriously struggle to find better, more well-produced edits than these. Called The Funk Box, there is nothing on here you won't enjoy if you're a fan of soul, with most of Krivit's edits leaving enough space for the original to flourish while still pushing it far enough onto the middle of the dancefloor. Review: For Record Store Day 2018, UK downbeat legends Zero 7 present an exclusive collectors box set. The package contains seven 7"s, containing 14 tracks picked by Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker themselves. Featuring their acclaimed collaborations with Sia, Sophie Barker, Mozez, Jose Gonzalez and Martha Tilston among others. This is the first time some of these tracks have been made available on such format. Four tracks are taken from 2001's Simple Things LP, a further three are taken from their 2004 album When It Falls, four from The Garden (2006) and the final two come from the 2009 album Yeah Ghost. Artwork is by the band's original design collaborator (Julian House) and the sleeves are colour coded - placed into a cruciform overwrap sleeve with heavyweight vinyl.

Compiled by Jerry Dammers, it's a treasure trove of his favourite singles from the label between 1979 and 1984 with standards from Madness, The Beat and Dammers' group, The Specials. From the horn led joy of "A Message To You Rudy" to the uptempo cover of "The Tears Of A Clown" via a bristling live version of The Specials' "The Guns Of Navarone", this is a fine overview of ska's golden age.

Review: Later this spring, authors Paul 'Smiler' Anderson and Mark 'Bax' Baxter will release "Scorcha!", a coffee table book celebrating the skinhead and suedehead movement of the late 1960s and early '70s. For the uninitiated, it was a largely white British working class movement inspired by both the dress of the Windrush generation and the ska, rocksteady and reggae music they brought with them from the Caribbean. This excellent ten disc seven-inch box set from Trojan has been designed as a musical accompaniment to the book. It boasts a wealth of classic cuts popular within the skinhead and suedehead scenes, both from well-known Jamaican artists and those that have largely been overlooked.

Review: Some 30 years after rising to prominence via a now legendary NYC radio show, veteran hip-hop DJs Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia have finally made a debut album. It sees them join forces with specially created nine-piece combo The M19s Band to serve up fresh covers of a range of well-known and obscure "dance floor bangers" (as the accompanying press release puts it). There are some superb interpretations, with the Police's dub disco jam "Voices Inside My Head" becoming a sweet soul-jazz treat, the Clash's "Magnificent Dance" reborn as a Latin jazz number (complete with Rich Medina spoken word vocal) and Womack & Womack's "Baby I'm Scared of You" a seductive, shuffling Afro-Cuban jazz standard. In a word: brilliant.

Review: Despite his London roots, rapper and beat-maker Lewis Parker has always excelled at making dusty, sample-heavy tracks that sound like they could have come out of New York in the midst of hip-hop's "golden era". For proof, check this brilliant box set, which gathers together some of his finest moments from the late 1990s and early 2000s on five "45s". There's a mix of killer vocal tunes, accompanying instrumentals and the kind of deep, head-nodding soundscapes that would once have been classed as trip-hop (he did feature prominently on Massive Attack's Melankoly label after all). It's not hyperbole to say that "The 45 Collection" contains some of the most entertaining and well-produced British hip-hop ever made.
